Pfunds Molkerei - Gastro Obscura

"This little store in Dresden is the “World’s Most Beautiful Milk Shop,” an official title bestowed upon it by the Guinness Book of World Records. That claim might be hard to verify, but there can’t be many contenders rivaling the sumptuousness of Pfunds Molkerei. The milk shop was opened in 1880 by Paul Gustav Leander Pfund, and was fortunate to survive the heavy bombing during World War II that destroyed most of the city. Little has changed inside the shop since then, although much has changed outside, namely the inventions of refrigeration and pasteurization that have made milk easier to keep at home. But today Dresdenites aren’t just walking into this splendid dairy shop for a tall glass of milk. Now, they come for the atmosphere. The entire interior is decorated with hand-painted Villeroy & Boch ceramic tiles. The shop is covered floor to ceiling with dancing angels, chubby babies, cows, and woodland creatures. It’s all accented in gold and blue, and lit by chandeliers, which might delude some into thinking this is a luxury jewelry shop, rather than one selling milk. The wares inside haven’t changed much either. Pfunds Molkerei still sells milk and boasts one of the country’s finest cheese selections (though they were forced to limit it to a mere three state-sanctioned brands during the socialist years of East Germany). The cafe upstairs sells dairy-based delicacies, like tortellini with spinach and grated feta or pork in pepper cream sauce. The shop also offers chocolates, milk soaps, and cream-based liquors, though it can be hard to reach them through the hordes of German milk-lovers. Know Before You Go Opened Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Taking photos is not allowed; however, press and media can request permission to photograph beforehand or on site." - Greg Jones, raymondwinn1941, History Fangirl, Molly McBride Jacobson, ahvenas

I visited today and really enjoyed it. The shop is small yes, but the tiles are beautiful and very intricate. You can see more details the longer you walk around and actually look at them. The staff were friendly and accommodating after I asked them for photography permission and consent to be in the picture. I had reached out in advance to the team asking for photography permission and was pleased when I found the shop to be empty (which is easier for me since I don't have to ask people for their consent). Unfortunately, after two minutes of me entering the store, a group of tourists arrived who filled up the small space in no time. I didn't notice that the dairy was part of the tourbus. So I hd to wait for the shop to clear. With regards to parents and children: I also observed parents mentally checked out and letting their kids go rampant in the store with little to no respect for the historic place or the staff. Parents still have an obligation to supervise their kids and ensure that everyone can enjoy this historic place. With regards to photography: the DACH countries have very strict photography and data privacy laws, it baffles me that many tourists come in and start taking pictures without asking the staff for permission. This is rude and uncultured behaviour. Make sure to obtain photography permission prior to your stay and respect visitors. Technically/legally you have to ask every single visitor who is going to be in your image for consent. So dear tourists, please be respectful when you visit this historic site and consider also German cultural norms. 🙏🏼

Absolutely magnificent pieces of artwork and its AKA the most beautiful milk shop in the world. The shop provides variety of products that made from milk like soap, alcohol drinks and other beverages, souvenirs. Up stairs is a nice cafe where you can taste some of the milk products. And no entrance fee, totally worth it to visit only 15 minutes by tram 11 from the Potsplatz station.

One of the most beautiful and unique shops I’ve ever visited! Pfunds Molkerei in Dresden is truly a hidden gem the interior is stunning, covered from floor to ceiling in hand-painted tiles that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a museum. We tried their fresh milk and cheese both were delicious and high quality. You can also buy lovely dairy products and souvenirs like chocolate, soaps, and liqueurs. It’s a short visit, but definitely worth it if you're in Dresden. A perfect mix of art, history, and authentic local taste

No photos can ever express how beautiful this store is. You feel like you are inside of a treasure box. If you love cheese, then even more so, as they sell many kind of cheese here - German specialties, as well as imported ones. I got here one of my favorites - Mimolette. The buttermilk is definitely worth a try. It's good, and I know my buttermilk. Plus just a euro for a glass to enjoy in a such beautiful place . We came later in a day, and there were still a lot of people, but not overcrowded. This store has to be on every visitor list.

Google
Surely worth visiting, it’s like a diary shop with tiles everywhere, even on the roof. Located in Neudorf, the newer part of town, which you can easily access via tram. Around there are basically no parking places, so come preferably by public transport. Definitely a more atypical visit, but therefore the more interesting. The mustard collection is also worth mentioning. You can buy/try out all sorts of diary products, mostly based on goat milk. It’s mostly crowded, so be patient :)

We visited today. What an amazing experience and a MUST visit when in Dresden. Founded in 1878-1880 by Paul and Friedrich Pfund, this is considered to be the “Most Beautiful Milk Shop in the World”. The shop is so beautifully decorated with amazing tiles in Neorenaissance style by Villeroy and Boch. We tried a cheese plate and it was very good. The shop endured WWII which is an amazing. There is a cafe upstairs. We loved amour visit and cannot recommend enough. Historical.

When you are in Dresden, you have to visit this place! It’s so beautiful just like walking into fairytales world. We spent an hour or a bit more there because we went upstair to the restaurant/cafe to have lunch. Downstair is a shop selling diary products plus you can eat cheese and drink there. Upstair or second floor is proper restaurant. We ordered cheese plate and cake, coffee, amazing service. You can find parking on the street side. We got lucky as one of the person who was about to leave told us we can take his spot.

Love place for its art but beside it left us speechless. All what we can say: do not go here if you look foreign or do not speak German, stuff is extrem racist and has no fear to speak loud out there thinkings about foreigners, we have been shocked as we never had such a experience before in Germany.

Yelp
Apparently the most beautiful cheese shop in the world, which is probably true. The decor was so beautiful and the shop was nice. It does small pretty funky in there though. The restaurant is upstairs and has a nice ambiance in there as well. It was hot though. They had a few options for cheese boards and we decided to get the regional cheese board. This was pretty good and some of the cheeses were really interesting. The dresdener cake was fluffy and pretty good. Trying it for the first time and it was kind of like a light and fluffy cheesecake with an egg cake inside. Not that sweet and also has a lemony flavor. The service was really friendly and quick. Our server was so nice. The restaurant was also definitely less crowded than the store which was pretty touristy.

Yelp
This beautiful old German shop is actually really small and totally overrun by tourists, probably due to it being the set of the bakery in The Grand Budapest Hotel film. Staff seem overwhelmed and are very grouchy. It's really hard to move around in here due to all the tourists. Thus it was really hard to browse the items for sale and impossible to actually buy something. Ended up leaving after just a few minutes. Is there a time when this place isn't so busy it can actually be visited?

Yelp
The most beautiful store ever. Make sure to walk upstairs for the restaurant/cafe! We came during Christmas time and there was barely anyone there. We ordered some desserts and drinks. the almond cake was very good but the poppy seed cheesecake was so so. I wanted to try the original cheesecake which is supposed to be very popular, but they were all sold out for the day. I would also pass on the chai latte as it was not very strong and heavy on the milk, but the rest of everything we got was very delicious!

Yelp
On my most recent trip to Europe, I purposely booked a one-night stopover in the little town of Dresden, Germany just so I could visit the Pfunds Molkerei. Why, you might ask? Because this tiny shop provided the real-life filming location and setting for the fictional Mendl's Bakery in the Wes Anderson film "The Grand Budapest Hotel." I'm a huge movie nerd and an even bigger Anderson fan, so paying this place a visit was a real no-brainer. It's located in the outskirts of town. It technically is walkable from the main train station, but it's pretty far. It took us about an hour but we finally arrived. Yes, the shop has a ton of signs saying "no photos" are allowed inside, but we broke the rule with a little sleight of hand. The tile work is absolutely gorgeous, and it photographs well. The two women working the evening we arrived were far from friendly, which I found odd for a place that caters to tourists. The shop sells a few little overpriced touristy things like magnets, kitchen towels, and tote bags, but they also have chocolates and a cheese case with cheeses that are made elsewhere (wait, what?). There's a small area with a few tables where you can stand or sit and enjoy your chocolate or cheese snack. Overcome with curiosity, we decided to try a shot of liqueur that was made with milk. It was delicious, sort of like a more milky version of Kahlua. This isn't a place for foodies, it's a place for movie fans. We were the only customers in the shop, but I can imagine it would be miserably crowded when the giant tour groups arrive. I wasn't able to get a photo in the main part of the shop (seriously, folks, they will YELL at you if they catch you trying to snap a pic), but I was still a happy camper to have visited the "real" Mendl's Bakery.

Yelp
A OK shop but be prepared to get yelled at if you try to take any photos. Not sure what the big objection is.....they have these gorgeous tiles all over the shop & one would think for a historical landmark and tourist-trap, this would warrant all the free advertising they could get & especially when tour buses filled with people pile in at all times & they are all just waiting to love you....but Pfunds is vehemently opposed to any photos They had jams, dish towels, candy, shopping bags & a cheese case ( although they didn't make any of the cheeses themselves - which is weird for a creamery ) Best thing we found & my best tip? Get the Contessa Pearls! These are like the German version of Austria's Mozart Balls & everyone LOVES those!! Marzipan covered in chocolate - yum! I might love you more if you weren't so camera shy but for now, have to say you're A-OK

Yelp
It was a nice cheese shop, but I don't think it lived up to the hype. As of 2019, Google maps is off in location by about half a block. We went to the restaurant upstairs and got a East German Cheeseplate, black current buttermilk, and plain buttermilk. We also got an extra order of bread (1.5 eur). The buttermilks were a bit like a soft (non-Greek) yogurt, and the plain was naturally tart. The Cheeseplate had a nice variety. I think the price was fair, but I wouldn't recommend people go out of their way for this place. Also, service in the restaurant was decent, but it felt a bit cold when I first came in looking at the items for sale downstairs. As with what I'm finding in Dresden, using English here is a bit spotty.

Yelp
I saw this sight before leaving for Dresdan. Thought it would be interesting. Visited the first Saturday in August 2015. Very touristy, it was hot, small and no A/C.when we first arrived ok but within minutes a large tour bus arrived. Not my thing. I'm a traveler not a tourist if you are a tourist and and not traveler, go for it. Gave 2 stars for the tile. Too many people to check out the goods!

Yelp
This is a must see in Dresden for it's beautiful tiled interior and tasty cheese. It is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the most beautiful milk store in the world...and I'd have to agree as it is stunning! Upstairs is a nice konditerei serving quick meals and traditional desserts. If you arrive by car there is a parking lot behind the store. The beautiful tile and glasswares souvenirs are made in Meissen, famous for it's porcelain, and make great gifts or memories to take home. I bought six espresso cups and saucers to bring home.

Yelp
No photo... I mean it is a nice, fancy place but what is the point of not allowing people to take photo? The shop is much smaller than I thought Products sold there are not of my interest so I left after one minute.

Yelp
Well-worth the visit! Delicious cheese and milk in a particularly beautiful historic shop!

Yelp
Complete waste of time. Horribly overpriced, junk stuff that's not even locally made, cheeses that they don't make themselves, and aren't very good. Plus, the second you walk in, you are being yelled at that photos aren't allowed. Add to that an obvious dislike for tourists (this IS a tourist trap, right?). They spend money to have the hop-on, hop-off bus stop right in front, and yet they treat their guests terribly. And, if you don't speak fluent German, forget it. They will pretty much ignore you. So, I'll take my camera and my Euro's elsewhere, where they are wanted.

Qype User (finesc…)

Yelp
It stinks of cheese and dairy! Defintetely a tourist trap. The tiles are beautiful, but, when you re packed like sardines in there with the other tourists, and you re not allowed to take photos, then it feels Like you have just wasted your time. Majority of the stuff sold in there is my even local or German produce.
