13 Best Things to Do in Maui | Condé Nast Traveler

"With food, amenities, soft sand, and approachable waves, this is the perfect beach for families. The waves can be aggressive on occasion, but generally the water is safe. It's adjacent to the Ritz Carlton and Kapalua resorts, so it's not one of Maui's more remote beaches, but that's not why you come here. It has everything you need, from restrooms complete with outdoor rinse showers, a burger shack for a snack, plenty of knowledgable lifeguards, barbecue grills, picnic tables, a payphone (hey, who knows what you might need), and ironwood trees in case you need a bit of shade. Go for a swim, bring the kids, float around, and let loose. This is carefree Hawaii at its best." - Todd Plummer

D.T. Fleming Park — Beaches | Condé Nast Traveler

"Give us the wide-angle view: what kind of beach are we talking about? It's adjacent to the Ritz Carlton and Kapalua resorts, so while this is definitely not one of Maui's more remote beaches, it more than delivers with all the essentials: enjoyable (and safe) waves, clean sand, and all the amenities you need for a perfect Hawaiian beach day. How accessible is it? Hours-long drives and lengthy hikes not quite your thing? Look no further—this family-friendly beach is super easy to access. There's a main parking lot with about two dozen spaces, and a much larger lot on the other side of the access road. ADA accessible restrooms and a wheelchair ramp down to the beach make this an accessible experience for everyone. Decent services and facilities, would you say? Everything you need is here, from restrooms complete with outdoor rinse showers, a burger shack for a snack, plenty of knowledgable lifeguards, barbecue grills, picnic tables, a payphone (hey, you might need it), and ironwood trees in case you need a bit of shade. How’s the actual beach stuff—sand and surf? The waves can be aggressive on occasion, but generally this is a safe beach. Go for a swim, bring the kids, float around, and let loose. This is carefree Hawaii at its best. Can we go barefoot? It's an expansive white sand beach, at over 1,500 feet long and 150 feet wide. Leave your water shoes at home. Anything special we should look for Don't skip the Burger Shack, which offers refined takes on classic beach grub. Crispy calamari with a horseradish-citrus sauce, and the Bikini Burger made with smoked tofu and jicama slaw are highlights. If you're not worried about your bikini bod, indulge in one of the shack's rich (and Instagram-worthy) ice cream shakes. If we’re thinking about going, what—and who—is this beach best for? With food, amenities, soft sand, and approachable waves, this is the perfect beach for families. Thanks to the location and convenience, it's really hard to go wrong." - Todd Plummer

Google
This is a gem find! Hit it up early too! We came on a Saturday for some relaxation but there were plenty of beach goers. A lifeguard was on duty also. Down into the entrance to the beach area there is also a couple of food trucks too. Plenty of space for a fun day at the beach. Off in the distance you can see part of Kapalua Golf- the bay course as well.

Sam Sharon

Google
Beautiful beach with amazing waves for boogie boarding. Parking was a big pricey (~$30) but it was good for all day, and the beach shower was out of order when we went (3/20), so we left a bit sandy. But the experience was still incredible and worth the drive from our hotel in Kaanapali.

John Harvey

Google
One of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever been to. Clean beach, restroom facilities. Only downside is paying for parking.

Micha Wood

Google
What a horrible beach experience. The wind was insane (there is almost no wind currently at our resort beach in Kahana), the shore breaking waves was awful, and the parking is horrendous. Had I known how awful this experience would be, I wouldn't have followed my in-laws here, and just stayed in Kahana instead!

Zane Echenique

Google
Large Beach for boogie boarding and laying out. Lifeguards on-site, first day left side was swimming only, right side surfing nasty rip current just right of the guardtower. Second time there entire beach was swimming friendly. Decent amount of shade up near the trees. Can get windy.

Penny Lyon

Google
Signage isn't great, but they do have life guards. We witnessed a med-evac today (praying for the patient). The beach is nice, food, drinks, and bathrooms close by. The ocean is six shades of blue here, and you can see Molokai in the distance. Near to the Ritz Carlton Resort, golf course, and Makaluapuna Point. REMINDER-Wear SUNSCREEN! Bring WATER!

Daniela Grasso

Google
One of my favorite beaches in Lahaina. Parking, bathrooms, lifeguard, tide pools, wash station.

Google
this is such a beauty! It was like being in a magical place. Love the sand, beach and just being there! Maui has beautiful beaches and this is one to add on the list. I love Hawaii!

Sarah B.

Yelp
Big open beach, easy access. Great spot, especially for larger groups or families with smaller children!

Yelp
As far as views go, this was spectacular. It's absolutely massive-which made for very good people watching and I passed by a small acai bowl stand as I walked onto the beach, which made it all the better. The sand is not rocky and there is alot of room to spread out. It is very popular, so prepare yourself for seeing many people. I could have gone on potentially not the best day because the winds were absolutely insane. Wiping sand in my face and into my food. I felt that it started great and ended not ideal...but its Maui, so hard to complain.
google avatar

Roselia G.

Yelp
Our first time here and our closest beach. What luck to come across a wild sea turtle that decided to sunbathe here along with us! It's a pretty small beach with no real waves so it's perfect for snorkeling. I hope to see our buddy again here next time!
google avatar

Leslie P.

Yelp
Great hidden gem. Don't tell anyone. Love the coconuts rolling on the sandy beach in and out with the waves
google avatar

Steven W.

Yelp
Beautiful, secluded beach walking distance from your stay at the Ritz. We took many beautiful, Golden hour photos here with the kids and they spent at least an hour running in and away from the crashing waves.
google avatar

Andre E.

Yelp
Well, I am ashamed to say in the 20 years we have been coming to Maui we have never visited this Beach Park. It has a lifeguard station and that is saying a lot since many beaches on Maui don't have lifeguards on duty. There is plenty of Shade, tables, and a beach area to completely enjoy your day. This is our official go-to beach now. Eat, Drink, and Be Merry, my Friends!!!
google avatar

Shakira E.

Yelp
Beautiful beach! We've been coming to Maui since 2002 and this was our first time visiting this beach park. It's perfect for a day at the beach with lots picnic tables and bathrooms available.
google avatar

Yelp
The Fleming Beach is a public beach in the northwest region, which is maintained by Maui county at D.T. Fleming Park. It is a popular surfing and bodyboarding site, and the beach is wide and ended with rocks at two end sides. The climate is very unique sometimes, there could be all the sudden pouring heavily one side while it is still sunny the other end.
google avatar

Maria V.

Yelp
Flemings beach came recommended by the Quicksilver cashier at Whalers Village. We arrived late in the day not knowing what to expect. The water is colder Lots of good waves for boogie boarding Lots of local kids in the water with boards and fins. Wind gusty at times and flings sand into your eyes A beach shower to get the sand off And some aged looking bathrooms. Free parking if you can find a spot.
google avatar

Mr G.

Yelp
We were just on Maui for six days and came here twice. It was GREAT. The first time we also hiked the Kapalua trail (recommended) and the second time thanks to some sunburn we were in the shade...it is a beautiful beach. It was a bit windy the second time though not as windy as another day years ago when we had to split...no biting flies this time either. The facilities are decent and parking is alright unless you arrive late. Shade is available all day which is not the case with other west facing beaches. Watching the surfers on the second afternoon there was great fun.
google avatar

Taylor G.

Yelp
This beach is not for relaxing if you like to swim in the water. This beach always has a sting wind and the waves are equally as big. You definitely need some endurance to be in this water. Also because it's north facing without being nestled in a cove, the water is colder and other beaches. If you like laying in the sand all day, this is a better option. Just make sure you weigh down your towels so they don't blow away.
google avatar

Lori N.

Yelp
A nice beach, but the waves definitely kick up here during the latter part of the afternoon. I'd definitely heed the adage about not turning your back to the waves here. I came here before 7 a.m. one day and was the only one on the beach. It was so peaceful, and gave me some time to reflect on what's important in my life. I'd suggest doing the same before the hoards of beach lovers flood the nice plushy sand.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
We had a great time at this beach. We were staying in Napili bay which was super calm and great for snorkeling but my 12 year old really wanted to boogie board so I searched on Yelp where we could go nearby to do that and this beach fit the bill. There is a lot of reef and rocks to the right side of the beach but that's where most of the waves were. My daughter had a great time and kept giving me a thumbs up! My husband snorkeled along side and saw some really cool fish and a sea turtle.

David M.

Yelp
Good waves and snorkeling. Often see turtles. Lifeguards and bathroom facilities. Barbecue areas. Fun beach for adults and kids. Only downside now is the new $26 + tax flat rate parking fee regardless of how many hours you plan to be at the beach. There are so many other good, nearby beaches without parking fees that I am sure D.T. Fleming Beach Park will see a significant decline in visitors.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
Great place to go boogie boarding! Lots of locals on the weekends and lifeguard on duty whenever the park is open. We rented boogie boards from our resort and brought them with us. The park also had decent but old bathrooms and a good sand wash off area.
google avatar

Viktoryia H.

Yelp
I would highly recommend visiting this beach park when in Maui - it has beautiful views, not too crowded and sea turtles come right up to you when swimming!
google avatar

Carol K.

Yelp
I love this beach. This is our "go to" picnic or BBQ beach when we are on that side of the island. For some inexplicable reason I rarely swim there, even when it is super hot. The beach does have brambles so wear shoes. There are grills and picnic tables a plenty. They have hard bathrooms, showers and lifeguards. You can find plenty of shade under the trees. DT is very pretty with the lava points and Dragons Teeth off to the south side. If you get hungry, you can always pop over the the Ritz's beachside hamburger hut for an exhorbitant $$$$ burger. All in all, a winner.
google avatar

Steven S H C.

Yelp
if you are in the area, make sure to stop by and enjoy the beach and surrounding area. I especially like the idea of lifeguard looking out for you. lots of shades, green grasses and clean facility and not to mention awesome view.
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
What a wonderful beach. Not so tourist busy like many. Nice place for quiet time. Be aware of the surf and rogue waves. They can be dangerous and kind of fun.
google avatar

Rachel J.

Yelp
A hidden gem. It was fun to sit back on the beach and watch the surfers. We had been out exploring West Maui and it was a nice way to end the day!
google avatar

Fred K.

Yelp
Beautiful beach, great views of eastern Molokai, love the sand. Wave action can be energetic - lots of undertow so you need to pay a little extra attention. As others have noted, Ritz has a burger shack dead center in the middle of the beach if you didn't bring anything to eat with you. Nice spot!
google avatar

Janet M.

Yelp
Great beach on Maui with beautiful snorkeling and swim with the turtles and gorgeous, colorful fish. Parking is pretty good, but the afternoons the winds picks up and the water can be very challenging. So go early and enjoy this beautiful beach.
google avatar

Audra H.

Yelp
Didn't get in the water here the day we went because the red flag was up and the waves looked quite large. I've heard this is a great boogie boarding spot,, which I totally could see but today it wasn't happening due to really rough waves and rip currents. It's a nice spot that's secluded and beautiful. I'd come by again for sure.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
Beautiful but windy, this is a great beach for bodyboarding but if you're here for swimming or floating in the sea, maybe find another a lot. Close proximity to the Ritz-Carlton which does offer a golf cart ride down and up the hill if desired.
google avatar

Thomas B.

Yelp
What a wonderful find. Its a great kids beach. Lots of sand and small gentle waves that are big enough for beginer's body surfing. Our 11 year old grandson had never body surfed before and once he got the hang of it we couldn't get him out of the water. There is an actual bathroom as well as a shower area to rinse off the sand and salt. There was plenty of parking the day we went. Only a 15 minute drive from our north Kaanapali Beach hotel.
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Beautiful park and beach area but I cannot recommend it as the waves and wind were absolutely ridiculously rough rendering the beach useless to me. It is a shame as this beach is the closest to the Ritz Carlton and the Ritz offers a quick shuttle to the beach with towel and beach chair service. Employees are extremely friendly and the Burger Shack offers excellent views of the beach.
google avatar

Thuong T.

Yelp
One of the bigger beaches around Maui. Definitely a lot of people, and it is right next to the Hilton hotel. There's also restaurants nearby so you can grab drinks or food. It was a very clean and relaxing beach to be at. And the water felt great !
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
DT Fleming Beach Park, located at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is a scenic public beach in Maui. The large waves at this beach make this an ideal spot for surfers. My husband and I strolled along this beach during our stay at the Ritz, but unfortunately we were unable to swim in the water because the water was too rough during our stay. Perhaps the beach is nicer in the summer, but in January this beach was extremely windy and the water was too cold and rough for swimming. I would love to visit this beach again on a calmer day.
google avatar

Ivy S.

Yelp
Within the grounds of the Ritz you can walk down a walkway to DT Fleming Beach. We would, on a whim, get up from our cabana at the pool and decide to walk down here in our suits and all to take a dip in the ocean. On windy days its not fun. There was a slight chill in the air and more than a few times the they put signs up saying that the waves were to dangerous to swim. We only really had two days of calm sunny times here. When it is calm, its so beautiful and fun. The water is calm and so warm. The beach is also not that crowded. There is plenty of space to spread out. Some tourists leave behind their boogie boards or sand toys. You know my cheapness was more than happy to let my kids take advantage of that. They have a life guard on duty to watch out for everyone. I had an incredible moment while wading out in the water. I was hip deep and just enjoying the feel of the ocean and sun and wind on my body when I turned around and looked out into the open ocean. Right at that moment I saw a huge humpback whale breach far out in the ocean. It was a surreal moment. I couldn't believe that by chance I looked up and saw that amazing display. It was truly my favorite moment of the trip.
google avatar

Desiree G.

Yelp
One of our favorite places to go on Maui. You can body surf and boogie board for hours in this spot when the waves are good and relax on the beach with a beautiful view of the cove when they're not. It's great either way. There are also life guards on duty each day due to a tough surf break. Definitely heed any flag warnings they post. Accessible parking, and plenty of shade if needed. This is a good place for people of any age. Dogs allowed off leash. You know it's prime time when The Ritz Carlton parks itself adjacent to this beach. There's even a beachside Burger Shack restaurant just steps away. With plenty of outdoor seating, but so unobtrusive that I only just discovered it was there after dozens of visits to Fleming's over the years!

Yelp
Review #148 - 2016 I didn't get to spend much time here, but boy was this beach beautiful. There were so many families here enjoying their time with each other that I kind of envied them due to the fact that I was out here by myself on this beautiful island. The weather was so nice at 93 degrees with a nice breeze blowing through your hair. If I wasn't pressed on time, I would've stayed a while longer just to take in all that wonderful fresh air. I honestly didn't even know where I was going at first; but as I kept driving, I could see this beautiful beach/park from the corner that caught my eyes and I just had to make a u-turn just to check it out. If you're ever lucky enough to make it out to Maui, make sure you stop by and spend a nice morning/afternoon at this spot. Sorry, but my photos really don't do any justice for this beautiful beach because I was wearing heels and didn't want my toes to get all sandy before heading to the airport so I didn't get any close up shots.
google avatar

Andriy L.

Yelp
Very good beach with life guard on duty and normal bathrooms witch is very nice. If you in Hawaii for VK stop by for sure
google avatar

Vladmir T.

Yelp
Really Nice Park and Beach Area! This is a really nice park and beach area for sure! There are lots of parking spaces, but also lots of people so it may take some driving around to find someone leaving so you can get in. Lifeguards on duty can help parents rest easier with kids playing, I'm not sure if lifeguards are for adults.... I have a Darwinian belief about adults who enter the ocean and don't have the proper skills... Nice clean sandy beach and nice showers to get the salt off afterwards too! Cool park for picnics in the grass as well. BUMMER: For some reason camping on Maui is nearly impossible compared to Oahu and Kauai where you can camp anywhere. I like to camp a night on the beach here and there, it's so nice... So this park threatens no camping all over or they will come and get you...
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
We love this beach. It's my husbands favorite for body surfing. The waves don't fail to please him. I love it because the water is such a pretty blue. There is plenty of room for lots of people on this beach. There is an area for swimming, a rocky area for checking out beach and sea life and an area with trees with a little steam under them. We keep going back to this beach.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
We came to this beach for about an hour and a half on a very windy day with big swells. The kids and the dads boogie boarded in the waves while the moms looked on. They had the best time! It wasn't an all day event on that particular day but provided some short term fun. The south end of the beach is attached to the Ritz Carlton and you can meet a nice walking path there.
google avatar

Earl G.

Yelp
You definitely want to get to this beach earlier in the day. By afternoon it gets super windy and with choppy waves. Not for swimming unless if you were born with fins. The boogie boarders looked right at home in the water though. There's plenty of shady areas with picnic tables. More of a touristy, less crowded beach. If you're sun bathing and don't mind the breeze few breezes this could be for you, or if you're a kiteboarder, or are just wanna fly a kite. Beach pics (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/9qO38WfjVVcbrpVpI6qJBA?select=2HNGtDqTUbuI5aGAXVE_lg#2HNGtDqTUbuI5aGAXVE_lg) (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/9qO38WfjVVcbrpVpI6qJBA?select=zg85GlewyjCNOCqFQdXCAg#zg85GlewyjCNOCqFQdXCAg)

Yelp
A beautiful, gorgeous view. Soft sand and beguiling blue waters. The beach is accessible from the Ritz-Carlton resort but open to the public. There are beach chairs to lay out on, and umbrellas can be rented. Not a long stretch of beach, but definitely a good place to relax. I found the little spot tranquil and picturesque. A bar and restaurant are conveniently located here. The beach has lifeguards as the waves can be strong. Great place for sunbathing.
google avatar

Shalin P.

Yelp
Wow, DT Fleming has to be one of the best two beaches I've ever been to. It's no wonder Dr. Beach rated it as the Best Beach in the US in 2006. - Small but not crowded - Lifeguards - Picnic tables & Restrooms - Plentiful free parking - Beautiful warm clear blue water with NO rocks - HUGE waves that were a blast to play in (at least on the day we went) My only regret is not spending more of our vacation here.
google avatar

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
A decent beach with pretty good parking. Waves can get rough in the afternoon. Better snorkeling in the morning. Body surfing and boarding is better later in the day. I like that they have a decent restaurant (Burger Shack) right next to the beach. The shade from the trees is further from the water than I would prefer. I don't go here much, but if you are thinking about it it's worth the stop.
google avatar

Rose V.

Yelp
This is one of the most beautiful beaches in Maui. The sand is so soft and white. The surf is awesome too, it breaks over very shallow water so be careful how you fall and not break your neck. I don't recommend beginners surfing here, the rips and cross current and under tow can be very strong. Theres a large parking lot, picnic tables, bbq grills, bathrooms, showers and a lifeguard to help keep you safe :)
google avatar

BigRoomNine ..

Yelp
Nice secluded beach. We've been here twice now and it is always empty. At the end of the beach there's a little hiking area where you could climb up on rocks and walk around. There's a golf course on the top of the climb. Views are great here but not an area to play in the water or lay out. Pretty windy here and the water is pretty choppy.
google avatar

Mike V.

Yelp
Definitely a great beach if you are looking for something less crowded but still offering close parking, a beach hut attached to the nearby hotel with frozen drinks and mojitos and modest waves for beginners at times. Bring a football too, since the absence of people during the week means you can actually have a "field" without needing to hurdle sunbathers as you break for the endzone.
google avatar

Kao S.

Yelp
Not a bad beach! Seems to be off the beaten path but it's about 1/3 tourists and 2/3 locals. Very nice quiet beach and clean. Plenty of shade under trees and picnic tables/benches so good time for bbq. Will definitely come back to enjoy this beach and will bring family
google avatar

Jim V.

Yelp
Visited Fleming Beach during our Maui trip. Nice beach (can have rough surf on some days) with a small ripple of surf on this day. Good collection of picnic tables under the trees overlooking the beach. Ok restrooms located near the parking lot. Good snorkeling at each end of the beach near the rocky areas and around the rocky point in the cove. There is a lifeguard stand at this beach. Fleming's beach can get busy on weekends with a combination of locals, tourists, and long boat teams. Definitely worth a visit during your visit to Maui !
google avatar

Tanner D.

Yelp
BEST BEACH ON MAUI This place rocks. Just past the Ritz Carlton on the main highway on Kapalua is this gem of a beach. Great waves and sandy bottom beach. Perfect for boogie boards or body surfing. (Rent one at Snokel Bobs $27 for the week.) Great beach for tourist as it borders the infamous Ritz. Bathrooms, and shower available.
google avatar

Jill R.

Yelp
Lots of parking, easy to find, lots of beach space in sun and shade. They have decent bathroom facilities. There is a restaurant/bar and several others walked back with food and drinks. The amount of shady beach spots was my favorite part!
google avatar

Rick P.

Yelp
Beautiful sunny beach with shade trees lining the back edge. Good waves for surfing, life guard station, clean bathrooms, and a hamburger joint with outstanding shakes. My kinda beach!
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
Great gem. Found this place just driving around. Beautiful water and has a great blue. Also I got to see a turtle while I was swimming not that far off the beach. There is a life guard stand as well.

Mrs. B.

Yelp
This may be my favorite beach here... beautiful, easy parking, and not overly crowded... the water is beautiful and when we were here the waves were calm and fun to play in with the kids. We got here around 9:30 on a Friday and there was LOTS of parking and so much space on the beach. The burger shack is super convenient for a meal without having to pack up and go elsewhere.
