Absolutely amazing. From the moment I stepped in, they were welcoming. The ambiance is elegant but relaxing. The servers are spectacular. Mine showed me the proper belgium was on how to eat the flemmish stew which I found endearing as not many would go out of their way to explain how they typically consume their natural meals. The food was definitely filling and hearty but given the service I had to do a dessert. I highly recommend coming here. If not for the food, definitely for the service. Its above and beyond. You arent rushed. And you are well taken care of in the same regard as all other diners. Thank you for making my last meal in belgium memorable!!

Restaurant du Progrès in Ghent delivers exactly what it promises: good Belgian food in a no-fuss setting. The Gentse Waterzooi was spot-on. Creamy, hearty, and well-seasoned, the kind of dish that makes you nod in approval with every bite. Not life-changing, but really well done. The profiteroles, though, were just... good. Perfectly fine. Light pastry, decent ice cream, chocolate sauce that did its job, but nothing that'll haunt my dessert dreams. Solid execution, zero surprises. Service was friendly and efficient, the kind where you don't feel ignored or smothered. The space is simple. Clean, comfortable, and unpretentious, which I appreciate. Prices are fair for the location

Nice place. They use good ingredients. The food was too salty, with little other spices or flavor. There was no sauce for the fries. Belgian beers are not the Best. Danish or Czech are much better. The creme brulee was corect. I know it's Belgium not France but... It should be called "Du Regress"

The service here is nothing less than outstanding. Nikolas delivered the most above and beyond service I have ever experienced in my life. Never have I ever felt so taken care of throughout the entire dining experience, and it truly was a breath of fresh air. Nikolas paid us so much attention and delivered above and beyond what I could’ve ever expected from a dining experience. Safe to say my favorite place I have ever been to— and I WILL be back. Aside from the absolutely OUTSTANDING service we experienced, I had the chicken waterzooi which was BEYOND delicious, we also had the steak tartare which was to die for, and the vegetarian spaghetti which was amazing! Nikolas, thank you so much for your care, you have genuinely changed how we view dining forever.

I am still sitting down waiting for all this food to let me continue my journey. Since I leave reviews, I rely on them to make decisions as to where to eat while traveling. The reviews of this place was amongst the best in town and the ppl reviewing not only recommended the place, but also the stew as the favorite dish to order. And so I did. Mind you, I had eaten a waffle earlier and was not that hungry, so I thought, I was not gonna finish my meal. I finished it and savored every piece of it. You can taste the beer on the stew and together with the crunchy fries, perfect pair. I just don’t know how my life will continue not having this around !! A must stop in Ghent!

My husband and I were recommended this restaurant from the 1898 Post Hotel. Our dinner was superb from start to finish. The hotel had made us a reservation. We were originally seated in the back. However, when a table by the window opened up in front we were immediately offered that and moved. Our server was Nicholas. He made excellent recommendations on Belgian specialities. He even showed us how Flemish stew was mixed with French fries and sauce. He constantly checked in on us and was overall a great server. I’m not sure if it’s possible to request him but if I return to Ghent I would come back to Du Progres and ask for Nicholas. Thank you for a great dining experience!

Google
Trying the Waterzooi was a must after learning that it is a staple dish in Ghent. No exaggeration when I say this was the best dish that I had in the whole of 2024. I savored every bit and flavor of that stew and hope I am able to re-live the experience in the foreseeable future! Note: I was here a year ago but thought it would still be useful to share memorable dining experiences while reminiscing!

Google
We went to this restaurant since it has a good rating through Google reviews, the restaurant itself is decent and at a reasonable price, however the food lacked flavor. The sauces that were served were all delicious, but the protein (chicken, meatballs and scampi) lacked seasoning, as if they were simply steamed, so this kind of let our palate down. However, the restaurant service is impeccable, waiters/waitresses are quick to take orders, to clear the tables and are very attentive - this was a highlight and it truly impressed us how quick they were (that’s why it gets a 3/5, the front staff + the sauces make up for the lack of the flavor we experienced).

Yelp
Delicious food and top notch service! We had a dinner with friends at Du Progres in August 2023. All the food we ordered was delicious and the service was precise, friendly, and prompt. Food ordered: Fish Fingers with Tartar Sauce Burrata with Tomato Carpaccio and Pine Nuts Cote à l'os Belgian Whiteblue 1,2 kg Chateaubriand Belgian Whiteblue 600 gr T-bone steak Belgian Whiteblue 300 gr Kids Steak All steaks were perfectly cooked and were great overall. However, Cote à l'os Belgian Whiteblue was the best and most flavorful. 600g and 1.2kg steaks first arrived uncut, they cut a two pieces in front of us to show the cook level, and then cut them all in rightly sized manageable pieces. It was very convenient and resulted in a great presentation as seen on the pics. Thank you Du Progres for the great dinner and evening! We highly recommend Du Progres restaurant as a great dining option in Old Gent area!

Yelp
A lovely Flemish bistro in the center of old town Ghent. We we're staying nearby and we were able to stop in on short notice for dinner on a festive Friday night. As this was our first night, we had to try the local classics-rich and hearty Flemish stew bathed in the rich succulent broth without out having a strong beer or mustard taste, and the Vol-au-vert-savory chicken in a creamy broth a bit like a pot pie-excellent! Of course it all came with a huge bowl of fries and some tiny salads. To start we enjoyed the house special roasted shrimp with a beautiful sauce. A couple of wines by the glass and we were full. Service was friendly and you look at the menu on your phone via QR code link. A lovely first meal in this beautiful town. Recommended

Yelp
Very kind and professional waiters; at the reservation everything possible was done to find anyway a good place for each of us; the champagne, the home made chicken/ fish fingers, the chateaubriand, the sabayon hmmm all really delicious, perfect ! There was also immediately a positive vibe and happy feeling in the air in this place; and at last but not at least the toilets are very clean. Thank you very much for making our evening a real success! Fam.De Graeve- Sonck, Nieuwenhove

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended by our walking tour guide. She said it had very good flemish stew. That is exactly what I ordered. It did not disappointed. The gravy was very tasty and the meat was very tender. I got some boiled potatoes on the side which worked perfectly with the stew.

Yelp
We drove into Ghent and were ready for a late dinner. We decided on Du Progres, a Belgian restaurant. They're next door to Poulet & Poulette. We dropped in on a Friday (around 8:45pm) and sat outside on the patio. Service was friendly and helpful; our waitress came by a few times and brought waters out (complimentary). Menu is split into chef suggestions, starters, beef, classics, fish, pasta, salad, vegetarian, children's and drinks. Main course are in the €11,00 to €29,70 range. - Delirium tremens (€4,10) - Delirium red (€4,50) - Flemish stew (€20,30) - pork cheeks with Westmalle beer and Tierenteyn mustard. It came with a side salad and fries. We asked for a mayo sauce. The stew was tasty; believe they mixed in some sort of red wine into the broth. Tasty and the pork cheeks were tender but retained its bite. Wish there was some roasted vegetables but I guess that's not a Belgian thing. - Beef steak Belgian blue (€20,60 for 200g) - we asked for medium rare but it was more on the medium side. Steak was good and the mushroom sauce tasty. -Filet pur simmental (€29,70) - our buddy C added the comte d'ursal (€1,60) which was a cream sauce with three peppers and mushrooms. - Tagliatelle with Parisian mushrooms (€14.60) - came with garden vegetables (mushrooms and baby tomatoes) and Parmesan cheese. I had a few bites and wasn't impressed. Pasta was on the soft side (aka. overcooked) and sauce was bland. They give you a large portion but our friend didn't even eat half of it. Pricy dinner; stick to the beef and classics.

Yelp
i ordered Flemish stew , described in the menus as "pork cheeks made with Westmalle beer & Tierenteyn mustard". Not even close! Instead I was served an overcooked beef stew. I complained to the owner who got very agitated and kept insisting that it was pork. He also gave some lame excuses about recip that was in his family for hundreds of years . Hardly! He lied about other things too. Overall, the place is overpriced and the dishes are tasteless and primitive. Avoid!

Yelp
Food (3 or 4/5) depending on the dish Ambiance (5/5) - it doesn't get much better than outdoor seating in a beautiful square Service (5/5) Shrimp (5/5): Get the shrimp entree. One of the best grilled shrimp I've ever had, so incredibly juicy, fresh, and flavorful. It really soaked in the garlic flavor (but there are other sauces you can choose if garlic isn't your thing). Smoked salmon pasta (3/5): if you enjoy super heavy creamy pasta, you will love this. For me it was too heavy and I didn't want to eat more than a few bites. Plenty of smoked salmon though, good proportions. Lastly, I loved that they give you tiny cheese balls to snack on while you wait for the food!

Yelp
A fine little restaurant with a *HUGE* reputation. If you're staying in Gent, you'll hear about this place... I guess it's pretty popular with the locals, but I just didn't fall in love with it. Came here on a Friday afternoon during what can only be described as "off-peak" hours. Most restaurants in Gent are only open at select times, and it can be a little tricky to figure them out (maybe if you can read and speak Flemish it's easier??). We came here and they were open, so that was a plus, but their menu was a bit limited, which was sort of a downer. The place was pretty packed, which I guess is quite typical. Service was prompt and attentive, and I think it was a miracle that we got a seat here on Valentine's day. So we ordered drinks, and looked over the menu. Got a Belgian stew, and a steak with pepper sauce. They were fine, just fine. Seriously three-stars fine. Like... really good heat-lamp food from the airport: it does the job and is tasty, but just lacks any character, presentation, or uniqueness. The Belgian stew was large chunks of stewed beef in a nice sauce, and the steak had a tasty pepper sauce, but neither really stood out or demanded a return visit. And I honestly can't tell you why- the steak was a *little* tendoney but not terrible, and the stew was a *little* flavorless but not completely forgettable. The fries were... hmmm... ya know, I'm honestly not sure what to think of Belgian fries. I tried them at three restaurants, and I hate to sound like an 'Ugly American', but Belgian fries are just blah. I'm sure that's just personal preference and the good people of Belgium are perfectly happy with their fries, but for me, I want some of those nice Five-Guys peanut-oil double-fried crispy-on-the-outside-chewy-on-the-inside deals. There's always some sauce to dip them in, and I guess that's just a part of the experience, but for me I prefer the ones at home. I'd come back to this place at peak dinner hours, with a reservation, for a more 'fair' experience. If it sounds like this review was a little harsh, that's because I was hoping for and expecting a lot more from the local recommendations. I'd come back, and I'd hope to bump it a star or two.

Yelp
4 words-make your reservation NOW! The food was incredible and cheap for the quality. The steak and frites are a must to all carnivores. The service was impeccable and a reservation was necessary. We are considering going back tomorrow even though we are staying in Brugge. It is close to most of the main hotels and easily worth the walk. Hopefully we will be back soon!!

Yelp
We made a late (8pm) reservations, and the restaurant was fairly quiet inside. It was un-seasonally warm so everyone was sitting outside. We had great service and the food was on point! The guys shared a very large steak, while some of us had beef tartar, waterzooi stew, surf & turf. The food all came out hot and fresh. Everyone's bellies were satisfied.

Yelp
Our #1 favorite meal in Belgium -- given that you're often paying a lot for a meal in this country, we often didn't feel the value in Belgium (had a lot of just ok meals.) At this place, it was expensive but you got what you pay for and much more. The beef quality was super high and this is the only place where I enjoyed the carbonnades beef stew out of all the places I went to in Belgium. Others got high quality beef cuts like onglet and entrecote and enjoyed them all. Of course, all of this came with copious amounts of fries on the side. The staff was very nice, spoke English very well and hooked us up with great service. Would highly recommend but it's more of a fancy place that you'd go to once in a trip, not a utility place where you'd come for multiple meals. I love Ghent and Du Progres!

Yelp
Delicious fresh pasta and ice cold beer. Friendly service and great people watching. Locals dining indoors tourists outdoors. We enjoyed it very much-family fun-I like that !

Yelp
I came late for dinner. Beautiful interior with excellent service from being seated immediate with a smile, to receiving my meal in good time. I was able to ask the waiter questions without feeling rushed. The Italian wine he recommended was wonderfully rich. My tagliatelle with shrimp was very good and not too rich for a cream sauce. Small touches provided and attentive service created a gourmet experience. The bill was fair. Ps. I sat inside to avoid irritating my asthma with the smokers (ex smoker who regrets it now - daily labored breathing is a sadness like no other at only 41). Thank you for a nice experience in a heavily tourist area.

Yelp
We were looking for a restaurant that had great authentic Belgium food, found this restaurant everything was superb !! It's great for people watching, they have heat lamps, first-class service , & I would highly recommend and definitely will return.

Yelp
there's an upstairs with window seats and a very nice view over the square. The fries were mediocre tough, and we had bad mayo.. But on the flip side: I had a good steak with "James Bond" sauce.. which you should try its an enriched pepper sauce with tarragon and whiskey... I loved it, its renewing and tarragon always combines well with beef. Service was OK, we were lucky and had the last table at that moment.. so its advisable to make reservations.

Yelp
After returning from a 7 week European holiday, I reflected on my favorite meal and without question it was had here at Du Progres. It's highly coveted and spoke of in Gent for a reason. It's that good. Great service, great ambiance, and great food. From the small plates to the entrees to the dessert I don't think there is anything not excellent. I had a steak (peppercorn sauce) and it was exceptional. I admittedly do not like sauces with my steak but this sauce was on another level- totally elevated the dish. Our dessert was simple but fantastic. Vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. Seems elementary in retrospect but I wanted to lick the bowl clean- simple done perfectly. You'll want to go back even when you're 2,000 miles away.
