Rented 4 kayaks and 2 paddle boards for a day. I should have asked more questions as it seems this is not normal for them (seems like they do multiple day or week rentals). Called to schedule, was told to go online, was not possible for what we wanted, drove there to reserve, pay and sign paperwork. They were going to deliver them but when I called in the morning to ask for an ETA, I was told 2 or 3 PM. We just wanted a few hours one day and were leaving the next day. I said that we would just pick them up, I was told that was no problem. When we got there only one person had any clue as to what was going on. My paperwork had been misplaced so that started the chaos. Then the employees started arguing and yelling at each other. Finally got the kayaks and paddleboards out for us. I had to ask for paddles and life jackets. We got the paddles and I took a few life jackets as not everyone wanted one. Upon return, some employees helped us unload a little but mostlyon us to unload everything. This is possibly an amazing business but they should have just told me that they do not do daily rentals and I would have gone elsewhere. I did not get a receipt for the $345 so hopefully we will not overcharged.

Very pleasant store, great selection and good value. Bob is outstanding!! We had a situation where we accidentally lost a cell phone. It fell thru the cracks between wooden slats on boardwalk and drowned in the murky waters!! The phone had significant sentimental value because it's a memory of someone who passed away recently! We simply could not afford to lose it! Bob came to our rescue!! Bob went above and beyond to help us. Bob was patient to hear us out, got into a scuba suit and dived into the waters with a rake and extracted the phone! We can't thank Bob enough for this kind gesture! Bob refused to take a penny for this good deed!

We love DVO! They are our go-to while in town and we refer all our renters here. They even made a house call to fix one of our bikes for a guest. Highly recommend!

Rented 4 bikes for the week. Dropped off and picked up at the house. Beach cruiser style bikes were high quality, clean, and perfect for riding around town and even up to Corolla.

Surf lesson was fantastic. Got a private surf lesson with my husband and had a blast. There surf was rough, lots of backwash and there was a wicked current thanks to Hurricane Dorian, but our surf instructor Nick gave us 110% effort, holding my board against the waves and helping me get out to where the best spot was despite the fact that I could hardly stand in the current. He really went above and beyond when the ocean wasn't cooperating. The instruction was really helpful and we both were able to ride a few waves into the beach by the end of the hour. Huge success. Also love that we were able to keep the board for 24 hours after the lesson, so we got to do some more surfing the next day for free. Great value. We're hooked and these guys get the credit. Highly recommend!

Just be careful ordering from this company unless you are staying in duck. Tried ordering online for a child seat for a bike. Order was booked and confirmed. We were staying in Nags which is 30 minutes away but still, 30 minutes isn’t that far a drive. The seat was Never delivered. No call no email. We called to find out where our order was and were told oh we forgot and it’s too far to bring today mind you this was around 11am. We opted for a refund and they were going to refund for the day missed but that still didn’t help us out. Anyways just be mindful when placing an order you are near duck. My daughter also over heard the manager talking in the background about how it was too far etc. horrible customer service skills.

Yelp
Needed a wetsuit for the cold November ocean temps. This shop was able to get me and my buddy what we needed, they even confirmed their availability before we went there. This shop has a great stock of boards for rent or purchase and other great clothes and supplies. I will be back here when I vacation.

Yelp
Been coming to OBX - Duck for years and is the only rental place I use for bikes and surfboards. I have had my items dropped off or I pick them up service is always spot on. Affordable and quality equipment. Thanks

Yelp
Very helpful. Friendly to deal with. Prices were perfect definitely returning to rent a bike. Easy to find right off the Main Street. Locals that are friendly and respectful greatly appreciated their kind demeanor.

Yelp
The owner is a legend bodyboarder and more. His shop is the most responsible priced for all equipment & gear on the OBX I shop there when I'm in town! Mahalo Fred ‍

Yelp
Ordered kayaks and they were dropped off at wrong house for an entire day and we were still expected to pay for the full week..poor costumer service

Yelp
This seems to be THE spot to rent sea kayaks, bikes, scooters, skateboards, surfboards and beach equipment in "Ducktown" (as one of the staff here phrased it). We rented a couple of cruiser bikes here for $35/week (each). Maybe I'm used to Hawaii and California prices, but this seemed pretty reasonable to me. It's a small place but has a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Also appears to have a good variety of T-shirts and hats angled toward the "shredder set." Oh, and everybody calls this place 'DVO'

Yelp
Super fast and friendly service from Heather. Thanks Heather! Been going to these guys for 30 years.

Christopher B.

Yelp
Called on a Saturday to make a reservation for Tuesday surf lessons. Heather was very polite on the phone and told me that they will call me back, and possibly have to schedule the lesson for Wednesday. On Monday night I stil had not received a call back. I called DVO to see if there was going to be a lesson on Tuesday. The told me that they just booked up. They then went on to tell me that they were going to get another instructor, and they would call me back once he was on board. Well, they never called back. Avoid renting beach gear and seeking instruction from this company, you will enjoy your vacation much more by avoiding their business.

Sandy M.

Yelp
Checked with them before heading out of Duck for a couple of tubes for my road bike. While this clearly isn't their market, they had exactly what I needed and at a very reasonable price...must better than what I expected at a bike shop, much least in a tourist area. The young lady was very friendly and the price was right so I bought two tubes. I love supporting the locals especially when they deserve it! Thanks so much for taking care of me.

Yelp
I have come here many times as it the closest "surf shop" to our cottage. They refused a refund and they may not do refunds at all. This is besides my main point. I have gotten the "I can't be bothered attitude" here from the first time I stepped in the shop. When I go to WRV or any other real surf shop on the beach I always have a great experience. For some reason the staff here, from my personal experience, is not nearly as friendly as other places.....and no refunds?! I really want to give 2 stars but I can't think of a reason.

Yelp
Evan and his team the best from lessons to rentals. We come to OBX at least once a year and we get all of our surf gear here! Thanks Boogiedaddy123......

Yelp
On a week-long beach trip, my boyfriend and I were so excited to learn to surf. We found a couple of outfitters that offered surfing lessons, but ended up choosing DVO in part because they were so friendly and helpful on the phone and partly because we had a 10% off coupon. There was a group already scheduled for 3:30pm the following day, so rather than pay extra for a private lesson, they allowed us to join in on that lesson. We were told to arrive 15 minutes early. We were even a bit earlier than that, since traffic on the Outer Banks is somewhat unpredictable, and were waved over to park in the handicap space of their small parking lot. Tip: Overflow parking is next door. We were only going to be there a few minutes, so we ended up leaving the car there while we waited. Our instructor was a bit late returning to the shop from his previous lesson, so we probably got started about 10 minutes later than our appointment time. The group was really laid-back, so no one seemed to have an issue with this. The group consisted of a recently married young couple (early 20s), my boyfriend and I (late 20s & 30s), and two young boys (maybe 8 to 10 yrs old). We followed Jared's instructions and met him on the beach in Duck in front of a lifeguard stand. We briefly covered safety and he was careful to be sure we all felt comfortable. I expected that we would spend about an hour of our two hour lesson on the beach, learning to pop up, but we were out in the water within about 10 minutes of the sand hitting our toes. We rotated through the six students, each person getting a couple of minutes to chat with the instructor, ask any questions, and then ride a wave in. Some of us were faster learners than others, but by the end, we'd all ridden at least one wave in. Not bad for a two hour lesson! I appreciate Jared's laid-back attitude, sense of humor, and excitement over teaching us something he truly loves. He didn't give us too much unsolicited advice, instead letting us learn from our mistakes, but always had some great tips when asked. There was no pressure, just encouragement to "shred that wave!" I could not have asked for a better experience and look forward to the next time that I get to ride a wave to shore! We kept our boards for 24 hrs after the rental, included in the lesson fees, but the weather wasn't great the next day and we didn't end up getting anymore time surfing.

Yelp
Went with three friends for the 3 hour group surfing lessons and had a great time. Our first reservation was rescheduled due to low waves, but they were very helpful and got us set up for the following day. Our instructor was Jared with Ryan helping out. Both were great and very friendly! The group seemed a little large (about 10 people), but it turned out fine. One of the best things is that with the lesson, you get the board and wet suit for another 24 hours. Jared and Ryan were amazing and stayed to help us load and tie the boards to our SUV. Very fun, very laid-back - completely worth it!

Yelp
We have always used Duck Village Outfitters for our bike rentals for the past few summers. Quick, easy, convenient.

Phillip L.

Yelp
When busy...dont come here expecting fast service. Like most places here, separate youfrom Money with very little quality considerations. Bikes are rusty, thorns in tires and half flat but they were ready to go. Oh and please note the signs NO REFUNDS..stay away and rent from a decent bike place.

Yelp
From the moment we arrived, the folks there were friendly and welcoming. The service was fast and accommodating to get us in and out during our long weekend vacation in Duck. When we returned, they were equally friendly and fast. If we were staying longer, I would have reserved our bikes online and had them delivered to our house. Duck is a perfect place to bike with trails and most restaurants and shops within biking range.

Yelp
Rented bikes for a week from here. What I liked is how I could order online prior to my trip to ensure that there would definitely be bikes. Since my vacation was off season there wasn't a risk that they would be out but during the season it would be a definite. They offer the option to either deliver and pick up the bikes from your vacation home or you can pick them up yourself. The one thing I didn't care for is when I was originally planning to have the bikes delivered, the website specified that I pay a tip a head of time. I feel like a tip should be given for exceptional service, not to be required before the service is given. As a result, we picked up the bikes ourselves.

Yelp
Best place to rent a kayak in Northern OBX. They had the best rates for most of their rentals. I got a two person kayak for a week. I picked mine up at the store and was assisted in selecting a kayak and getting it secured to the roof. The associate also gave me some advise on where to launch my kayak that would be a smooth place for beginners.

K P.

Yelp
Extremely Unprofessional and Rude Staff. We signed up for the eco tour through the maritime forest. The tour guide arrived late and had an extremely unpleasant attitude from the get go. This was a holiday weekend and we were really looking forward to this. First rule of being a tour guide, be pleasant and courteous. When we called the shop to complain about the situation, we were told that the tour guide (Tammy) is part owner of the business and wether or not we decided to go ahead with the tour, despite her terrible attitude, we would have to pay. We ended up taking the kayaks out, on our own and had a pretty good time. Do yourself a favor, stay away from these scammers.

Yelp
We were on a mission to buy some used SUPs at the end of the season on our way out of town, and DVO was by far the best business to work with up and down the OBX. We actually visited all three, and the staff at every location was friendly, knowledgable, and honest. What I liked most was that they helped us pick out the best of the used options and pointed out flaws in the ones they had in stock. They were looking to get us the best SUPs they had between the three stores, and didn't want us walking away with something that had a crack or was damaged too badly. Add to that the fact that they had the best prices out of any store we visited between Frisco and Duck. Thanks guys, we will be back! Major compliments to Brad today, who helped us out immensely!

Yelp
We used DVO for surf board rentals and a kayak tour. I thought the prices were on target for the area. So not super cheap but competitive for a resort area. The staff was great and very helpful. Evan especially made sure we had good information on surf spots. The kayak tour was also fun for my family. I would recommend them and use them again to rent surf boards next time we are in town.

Yelp
When we rented our bikes on Sunday, it was quick and easy. We inquired about surfing, but due to the rip current, conditions weren't ideal for lessons. So we scheduled our appointment for Thursday afternoon. When we showed up for the appointment at 2:45, we were told that "all lessons" had been canceled by the instructor since 1:30 due to the rip current. Their long-winded explanation didn't explain why they couldn't have called to notify the groups of people that scheduled lessons. We could've stayed on the beach without interruption or made other plans for our last day in town. To top it off, we get back to the beach to find a large group getting surf lessons, including two young kids. We spoke with the surf instructors, and they were contracted for the day to teach for Duck Village Outfitters since they had been booked with so many appointments. They even had another appointment following the one that we saw at our beach. The instructors on the beach gave us a 5 minute lesson, we threw them some money and borrowed the boards of our generous neighbors for a couple hours. Glad we didn't give our money to Duck Village Outfitters after they blew us off. Try calling Outer Banks Surf Co. next time you're looking for surf lessons in Duck!

Yelp
The customer service was really good, but the only reason I know that is because I had to exchange two of the bikes because the brakes didn't work, the handlebar grips we're sticky, and one of the shifters didn't work. Would have given this place two stars if they hadn't been so accommodating with the delivery and friendly when I requested the bicycles be fixed or replaced.

Yelp
Overall, I like this business. Their low rating from me comes from their guided kayak tour. It needs more thought and better planning in two ways. 1) They made us drive from KDH to Duck to pay (the traffic!!) then back To KDH to meet the guide. Who was late. That was a wasted hour+. 2) Then, someone had failed to record another group for the tour. Another wasted hour. Also, one guide was sent with 4 adults and 3 kids; but 5 had never been in a kayak. Yep, tipped right over. The poor guide had to try and fix it all himself. Just a hot mess. Pleasant people, great products, better planning.

Yelp
My experience up until we returned the bikes we rented was good. Its what I witnessed when returning them that disgusted me. As I walked up the driveway to drop off our rented bikes I heard Evan I believe his name was (the manager) ask a young boy no older that 16 if he was stupid because he had the front forks of the bike he was building backwards....seriously? That threw me off a little but I continued shopping around the store. Not 10 minutes later I heard the same voice talking to another different boy like he was garbage for making a delivery mistake. Both of these boys were soaked in sweat and obviously working hard and this man had the audasity to speak to then like that.....I was upauled. Let's just say the most enjoyable experience I had at DVO was when I spotted a roach the size of my thumb crawling across the floor. I was not addressed by the inside nor the outside staff. So much for local courtesy. Will not be returning ever. I was also advised by the manager to try renting a kyack from ocean Atlantic rentals because they were out; and the customer service was amazing, go to ocean Atlantic rentals for a good experience.

Yelp
Try "For the Beach" surf shop instead. Ask for Nate. At least he will refund your money if you cannot surf due to rough weather conditions. Just returned from the Outer banks yesterday. I contacted Duck Outfitters and told them I was a novice surfer. Rather than telling me that the waves were predicted to be between 5 and 8 feet high - which is way too rough for most surfers, including a novice, they encouraged me to surf and recommended a board. For the next week, it cost me $50 to have the board lean up against the house because I could no surf. When I contacted them to take the board back and deduct two days off, I was told it was not their fault that the weather did not cooperate and was told I would be billed $30 for two days - when a 7 day rental would cost me $48.000. When I questioned the billing system, they could not offer me a reasonable explanation as to why I was charged $15 dollars a day. I would highly suggest going to "For the Beach" instead. Not only will they check the weather and waves for you, they will not encourage you to spend money on a board that you cannot use. They will also refund your money if the weather does not cooperate.

Matt K.

Yelp
Called ahead about renting paddle boards and kayaks. When we showed up they told us we would have to transport them ourselves, which is not what we were told before. Then it was arranged for them to be transported to the launch. Cashier got attitude and told us that we should tip worker taking equipment over. This was said in strong and unprofessional way. Guy who took equipment was nice. Wierd experience. Won't go back.

Yelp
We ordered a beach cart and umbrella Sunday morning on the website. Within 15 minutes of our order being placed and payment accepted I received a phone call from the manager needing a $12.00 payment over the phone for delivery unless we wanted to order more to equal $100.00 or pick up the items ourself. I gave him a VISA number and gladly paid the $12.00 and was told he hoped to have our stuff to us by 8 pm but by the next morning at the latest. At 11am the next day nothing had arrived so I called. I spoke to the same man, the manager. He told me that they ran out of beach carts? I was perplexed. He was never going to call us, never planned to deliver the umbrella but took our money! I hit him with these questions and received no answers. He gave me the name and number to another rental place, Ocean Atlantic Rentals. I demanded my refund for both the items never received and the $12.00 delivery fee. He said it could take up to 24 hours. I had to give him my VISA information again. My husband called Ocean Atlantic Rentals and within 30 minutes the beach cart and umbrella was delivered to our beach House. It is now 48 hours after that phone call and the one refund for the website has been returned to us but the $12.00 has not. I called an hour ago and had to leave a message for the manager to call me back and why I was calling! I am livid over $12.00! I would not recommend this place to anyone!

S E.

Yelp
The guided kayak tour was nice. It was a little odd that you pay for the tour in Duck and then drive about 15 minutes to a boat launch area in KDH. Our guide was excellent. Very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. My group of 3 adults are experienced Kayakers (~5 times a year in various water types). The rest of the tour group stated no previous experience. The guide was very helpful in explaining how to kayak and keeping the group together. We had excellent conditions and enjoyed our tour. The tour lasted about 2 hours which was just enough time. I would definitely recommend this tour to people who are looking to see something while kayaking - as opposed to just paddling through the surf in the Atlantic or in the sound.

Yelp
I rented a skim board here for a day to attempt to act much younger than my actual age. Not only did I get a board for a VERY reasonable price, but I also got some tips, help selecting the correct size and type of board, and some wax applied to the deck. It's a fairly small shop with limited parking, but it doesn't seem like too big a deal to park at the BP station next door. The staff is friendly and helpful, and seemed happy to talk. My only disappointment was not being able to get into one of their kayak tours, though it was a spur of the moment decision and probably would have been better to plan a few days ahead. If i need to rent a surfboard or other equipment in Duck again, this will be my first stop!

Mary P.

Yelp
I rented 2 higher end cruiser bikes and a surfboard last week and had them delivered to our place in Corolla. The girl on the phone was very nice and helpful. I called a day later when I found a few problems with one of the bikes. They brought another bike up shortly after the call and the driver did a few adjustments to make sure it was perfect before he left. I will definitely rent from them again next year for Memorial Day week.

Keven K.

Yelp
Rented from these guys in the past and had no problems. Family house since the 80's. This year I got a bike for a day just so I could keep my wife company on her 20+ mile run this morning. Shortly after starting the chain came off. Fell off 4 times. Took it back today and the girl inside didn't really seem to care. I knew I was in trouble when she was asked by one of her co-workers about a surfing group and she said they could just stay outside and wait. She said I should have brought it back last night. I explained again that I only rode it this morning. I felt she was rude. The guy outside had seemed understanding. She then asked why I didn't bring it back this AM. I explained our house was north and the Saturday line of traffic heading out was in effect. I said I took my kids to the beach for a couple of hours first. I guess I should have called. I didn't think that I should have to inconvenience my family because their bike had a problem. Unfortunately I started to get mad. She didn't even say "Sorry you had problems with your bike." She just wanted to know why I didn't act quickly enough for them to take care of it. It was only a 24 hr rental in which I only needed it for 3 hrs! I understand that things go wrong, but bad customer service is never understandable. No manager around to talk to of course. If I don't bring our bikes down again in the future, I'll have to find someplace else to rent a bike. Plus I was looking to buy a bathing suit and a few other things there when I returned the bike. Oh well. UPDATE: Spoke to Evan, the manager and he was very understanding. Apparently this employee has had issues before. I decided not to let one employee spoil it for everyone and called back. I will take the time to go see Evan next time I'm down.

Yelp
Rented birds from DVO while on vacation super accommodating staff and good advice on board selection for family. When one board didn't work the swap was super easy. Will definitely stop in and rent from these guys again!

Jeff W.

Yelp
Tried to take a poop here about a month ago, water didn't work. Left them a surprise ;)

Yelp
My daughter wanted surfing lessons more than anything for her 12th birthday so we got her lessons from DVO. It was an awesome experience for her! Jared, her instructer, was very knowledgeable and personable and talked to her the entire time. We got her a 1-hour private lesson which was perfect for a first-timer and they let her have the surf board for the next 24 hours to practice on her own. She actually got up several times during the lesson! It was a dream come true for her-thanks DVO and Jared!!
