10 Best Castles in Edinburgh | Condé Nast Traveler

"Dundas Castle is the real deal: a 15th-century castle about 40 minutes west of Edinburgh that can only be rented in its entirety. There are 17 bedrooms, so you can be the Laird of your own castle for as long as you (can afford to) stay there. The oldest part dates back to 1416, with the grand, now-main building dating from 1818. Some of Scotland’s most glamorous weddings take place here." - Freya Herring

We attended a wedding at Dundas Castle and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We were incredibly lucky with the weather; clear blue skies that made the grounds look even more breathtaking. The castle itself is beautiful, with an older section that adds a real sense of history and character. We stayed in the Daphne room in the courtyard, which was charming, comfortable. A highlight was meeting the friendly black and white llama wandering near the lawns. His buddy is slightly less friendly! From start to finish, everything about Dundas Castle felt elegant and special. I would highly recommend.

Where do we even begin? Our two-day wedding extravaganza at Dundas Castle was beyond anything we could have imagined — truly a dream brought to life. We planned our overseas wedding for more than two years, and the exceptional service didn’t start when we arrived at the castle… it started the very moment we inquired about hosting our wedding there. From day one, Jill, our wedding coordinator, was extraordinary. Every conversation, every tiny question, every idea we had — she listened, took notes, and understood exactly how we envisioned our day. We always felt supported, heard, and genuinely cared for. And Morven from Heritage Catering was just as outstanding, helping us curate the perfect food and drink menus for both our rehearsal evening and wedding day. She made the entire process feel effortless and exciting. When we finally arrived at the castle, we were speechless. It was spectacular — straight out of a fairytale. Sir Jack, you’ve truly outdone yourself. The beauty of the grounds, the warmth of the atmosphere, the sense of historic magic… it took our breath away. The staff at Dundas were impeccable. They welcomed our guests with such kindness, personally helped everyone to their rooms, and made us feel so incredibly special from the moment we stepped inside. We were greeted by our day-of operations coordinators, Ellice and Emma from Heritage Catering — an absolute super team. Wedding planning can be stressful, but the second we met them and reviewed the final details, all the stress melted away. We knew we were in the best hands. Our wedding day itself was perfect in every way — surrounded not just by the love of our friends and family, but by the love, care, and attention to detail of the entire Dundas team. Everything flowed flawlessly. The food was incredible, the drinks were spot-on, and our guests had the time of their lives. We felt like royalty. Coming from the States and planning a wedding in a country we had never even visited before, we were truly blown away. Dundas Castle exceeded every expectation we had — and then some. If you’re considering getting married here, or know someone who is… run, don’t walk. It will be unforgettable. And honestly, who wouldn’t want to get married in a castle surrounded by such beauty? We would relive this experience over and over again if we could. Dundas Castle will forever hold a piece of our hearts. 💛

We had the best wedding day we possible could have at Dundas Castle in April 2025. From not long after we got engaged, we knew the venue was for us. The venue itself is gorgeous, and we loved that our ceremony, drinks reception and evening reception could all be held in different parts of the castle/grounds, making the day flow really nicely for our guests. There is so much history surrounding the castle and it's the perfect fairytale wedding venue. We just wanted to say the biggest thank you ever to you guys! We had the best day of our lives on Saturday and we absolutely couldn’t have done it without you. Our day ran so smoothly, there were no hiccups and that's all thanks to incredible team led by Sinead who went above and beyond. It made the day so much more enjoyable for all of us knowing that everyone was taken care of.We always felt included but never bothered in the decision making on the day! I LOVED that! All of our guests commented on how helpful the staff were and how it runs like a well-oiled machine. Offering a room for our friend who is breast feeding was such a lovely touch and much appreciated. It was the little touches we loved like our room being cleaned before our private moment, our family photos and guest book being so neatly displayed and moved down to the pavilion, or our stationery being so neatly packed up for us leaving with absolutely nothing for us to do. The accommodation is stunning and I felt like a proper princess that night. So thank you! Jill was absolutely amazing in her responses to emails, organisation, keeping us updated and being a familiar friendly face. The whole team are just fantastic. We would highly recommend Dundas Castle as a venue to all of our friends - for us it cannot be matched!

As a wedding photographer, I have had the privilege of shooting at many stunning venues, but Dundas Castle truly stands out as one of the most unique and beautiful locations I have ever worked at. The castle itself is absolutely breathtaking, with its historic architecture and stunning grounds. It provides the perfect backdrop for any wedding, with plenty of beautiful locations for photos both indoors and out. What really sets Dundas Castle apart, however, is the level of care and attention to detail that the staff provides. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed with how well-organized and professional everything was. The wedding coordinator Morven and other staff are friendly, accommodating, and always went above and beyond to make sure that the wedding party and guests were comfortable and well-cared for. As a photographer, I appreciated the flexibility that Dundas Castle offered in terms of photo locations and timing. There were plenty of stunning areas both indoors and outdoors to take photos, and the staff was always willing to work with me to ensure that I had enough time and space to capture the perfect shots. Overall, I would highly recommend Dundas Castle to any couple looking for a truly unique and unforgettable wedding experience. The castle itself is stunning, the staff is professional and accommodating, and the location provides endless possibilities for beautiful photos.

Finding the right wedding venue can be so daunting but Dundas and their staff are very experienced and efficient. The venue itself also does not need anything extra as it is stunning! We got lucky with the weather in the end but even if it continued to rain, it was still an amazing day. You can see the value for money in the way they manage big events. It was a day to remember and would highly recommend any bride and groom to book the castle for their wedding. The location is also amazingly close to Edinburgh and the airport. Thank you to all the staff on the day!

My husband and I had a destination micro-wedding at Dundas and I cannot say enough lovely things about this space as a venue. The staff is exceptional, the food is fantastic, the rooms are stunning, and the grounds are absolutely gorgeous. Aileen was an absolute rockstar and could not have been more kind and accommodating. We had the best wedding day we could have ever imagined and Dundas made it SO special. 10/10 recommend.

Dundas Castle is delightful. The setting is beautiful and the interior is set up in really good taste. We were at a Wedding for three days and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Go if you can afford it.

We got married at Dundas castle in September 2023. The two days we spent there were exceptional. All the staff (especially Ellis our wedding planner) went above and beyond. Making it a day we will never forget. Alex and Kelly

Every little girl (and some little boys) hope for a fairytale wedding. At Dundas Castle in 2008 I got just that! The wedding of my dreams. Of course the best bit about your wedding is saying your vows to your beloved, and having everyone you love in one room at the same time... But the venue certainly helped! We had our ceremony in the 15th century building, "The Auld Keep", the oldest part of the castle. The ceremony room is a high-ceilinged stone room decorated with ancient looking tapestries. It is up two sets of narrow spiral stone stairways - not the best if you want to have elderly/infirm/disabled guests at the ceremony, or if you have a particularly enormous dress! The room seats about 90, but if you want more guests there is a second room where the ceremony can be watched by video link. We went up to the roof of the Keep for photos following the ceremony, which had amazing views over the River Forth to Fife, with the road and rail bridges visible from that height. After that we greeted our guests by entering the main part of the castle via a huge sweeping staircase, following a piper all the way. The meal was served in a large marquee on the grounds with lovely views across the gardens. It was served by the staff from Prestige catering company - The food was absolutely delicious, and served brilliantly by the glove wearing silver service waiters - it was almost scary how they silently appeared and placed food in front of every person on the table at once. The marquee was an ample size for a ceilidh that night, and again delicious food was served for the evening guests. And we got to choose the lighting scheme for the marquee to make it look unique to us! That was a brief summary of our specific wedding day, but there are loads of options for couples depending on where they want the ceremony to be held, number of guests for the ceremony and dinner, location of the dinner, and all importantly in Scotland- options for both outdoor and indoor activities should the weather be a bit rubbish! The castle is situated on acres of land, so it seems like you are miles from anywhere. I believe there is a golf course on the land, for those that fancy a quick round of golf before the ceremony. Quite randomly, there are Llamas living on the grounds of the castle! Something for the children/big children to get excited about. Before the wedding day, there is a dedicated team of wedding coordinators who help to plan every detail with you. During the wedding day, they can sometimes be seen discreetly running around with earpieces in, secretly communicating with one another to make sure things go smoothly. I would definitely recommend Dundas Castle for a wedding. I loved that once hired, it is "exclusively yours", the public can't walk in an have a look around whilst you're busy getting married! I can't speak for the current prices, but four years ago whilst expensive, it was very competitive with other Scottish wedding venues. If you are prepared to spend the money, you will be guaranteed a 5* service and an unforgettable wedding day.
