Where in Hockey Heaven Was 'Heated Rivalry' Filmed? | Condé Nast Traveler

"A 19th-century mass of stone and history, this landmark was used to double as Russia, with its imposing architecture instantly selling Old World distance the moment it hits the frame and providing the rougher, more textured counterpoint that keeps the show’s fantasy from floating away." - Paul Jebara

We planned on always visiting but something came up so we decided on that day to just go and we did. We loved it beyond words, from start to finish. The atmosphere was incredible, clean, friendly with the staff always greeting us answering anything we needed. The tour guide was the sweetest person very polite and informative as were the other members inside. I would highly recommend visiting and taking a tour. If you’re from Hamilton I would recommend getting your library card to cover the cost. No issues with parking as there was ample space. I would suggest taking the tour twice to fully embrace the experience.

Visited dundurn castle on a Saturday, I would say it was a fantastic experience. There was a short wait time for the guided tour, our guide was so knowledgeable, gave all the details she knows and tried to answer all of our questions! All the guides that work in this establishment also dressed in old time clothes, which gave us an immersive experience of how the old owners live in this place. Would recommend to children, or who just moved to Hamilton to know more about the history and important people to the city! It’s January and right after Christmas, they still have some christmas decorations on. We also got to try the shortbread cookies! They are delicious, and we got the recipe for the shortbread as well.

We stopped by Dundurn Castle while driving around and only explored from the outside this time. The grounds were beautiful—we even caught a glimpse of a wedding, which made the visit extra special. The highlight for us was the Kitchen Garden, a large and well-kept space where staff dress in period costumes. It’s a lovely spot for a stroll, and we look forward to coming back to do the full tour another day.

What a beautiful historic castle. Beautifully decorated and set up. Taking the tour was well worth it, our guide was a wealth of information. We very much enjoyed our visit.

This place has a completely different vibe. It was my first shoot here, and I’m definitely coming back for more. A true photographer’s heaven — stunning architecture, diverse backdrops, serene water, and lush greenery all in one spot.

Another National Historical Site in the City of Hamilton. Very well-kept and well-maintained grounds. Free entry for those with a Hamilton Library Card. Gift shop available. Decent size parking lot available. Hall rentals available. No free WiFi. Benches around for you to sit and enjoy. There is a playground as well as a coffee shop.

A cool step into the past. Our tour guide Roxanne was very knowledgeable and gave a great tour. So many interesting artifacts to see and a fascinating history. Tickets also included entry to another military museum at any time, looking forward to checking that one out in the future.

Yelp
It rained today, so we needed something indoors to do. The tour of Dundurn castle was a great experience! We especially appreciated how the tour guide Anna acknowledged the mistreatment of indigenous peoples of Canada and what conditions were like for the servants in a house like this.

Yelp
This is an amazing place to visit. There is so much culture in Dundurn Castle and it would be amazing to visit the museum with one of the guided tours. It has a nice trail that joins the waterfront trail and you can enjoy both the view and the walk. When we got here, there was a large filming crew filming beside the castle which was interesting to watch.

Yelp
We stopped here to break up our trip between Niagara and Toronto and are glad we did! It's not the prettiest exterior, but the interior was really cool and the grounds were quite nice. The tour guide was energetic and I was blown away by her knowledge. We were a part of a pretty sharp group who asked some interesting, thoughtful questions (which our tour guide affirmed) and she had detailed answers for much of it.

Yelp
Visited here shortly before the pandemic and enjoyed my experience. Probably overshadowed by nearby Casa Loma, but this castle has its own charm to it. The best part is really the tour which is very thorough and provides many great details to help the visitor better understand the time period which this house was inhabited and the function of the different areas. One of the nice things about this house is the smaller size so you're not trying to rush through everything and can try to enjoy the smaller details -- with that said, if you're trying to visit many sites at once, the smaller size allows you to go through it quickly and catch another tourist attraction in the same day. The military museum is small and cute, with lots of nice photo opportunities. It's free and has some nice self-guided learning with videos. It's worth a quick visit if you have the time.

Yelp
My experience of Dundurn is different from others that have written reviews. I attended my friend's wedding here. The ceremony was held behind the 'castle' under the canopy of the trees. It was a cloudy afternoon but still beautiful. I can only imagine that it would've been better if the sun was out and sunlight filtered through the trees. After the ceremony photos were taken on the grounds and a lunch was held in the pavilion by the parking lot. I'm not sure if the wedding coordinator works for the castle or not but she made sure the wedding party knew what order we were supposed to do what at the ceremony and reassured the bride she could contact her with any questions or concerns to make sure that her big day went without a hitch.

Yelp
We were looking to do some day activity in Hamilton - Ancaster area, when we stumbled upon this! You have an option to buy tickets online or on-site. We decided to buy online since it was offering 20% discount. The tickets included guided tour, which starts at the gift shop. Our tour guide was dressed in Victorian-styled clothing and took us in the house (or castle) after giving a brief overview of the gardens and adjacent buildings. The group size was about 15 people and the guided tour runs every 20-30 mins. As we moved from one room to the other it was evident that the MacNab family (who owned the house in mid 1800's) were living a overly luxurious life. I was impressed by many features and ameneties in the house that were not common until mid 1900's in North America! The basement had a unique character and sense of eerie feeling :) For lack of better words, I found most of the items at Dundurn looking 'old' than 'vintage' like Casa Loma. This could be due to poor maintainance or merely because they were built almost 100 years apart! The garden around the castle and lake behind is beautiful, definately more lively in summer. They also have a farm, open in summer where you can view old-age farming techniques. These tickets can also be used to view Military Museum nearby. This can be a side-plan of your trip but not the main event!

Yelp
Walking up to this place I didn't expect much, boy was I in for a surprise. We checked in at the gift shop and paid our $10.50 admission. We only had to wait 15 minutes for the next tour and our tour guide was fabulous. He went through so many facts about the place, including all of the latest updates, it was hard to keep up! You are taken through every part of the castle including the basement and kitchen, where you get a jam tart treat. The tour lasted about 45 minutes and it was well worth it. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Had been wanting to see this and got here over the weekend. This is not really a castle, but actually a stately home belonging to Allan McNab, a colonial premier of Canada and ancestor of the current Duchess of York (AKA "The Rottweiler'). It has been a museum since 1900 but they are stll doing restoration - the main hall was about to have new wallpaper based on the original. It is interesting as a house museum as it has a lot of original pieces and generally careful restoration, with the tour spending almost as must time on the servants quarters as upstairs. The guide was knowledgeable but geared her scripted spiel more to the children in attendance. For its mid-nineteenth century time, the house combined some fairly sophisiticated features (early gasification, running water and a flush toilet) with some rather corner cutting finishing touches (stucco painted with lines over brick instead of real sandstone for the exterior wall, trompe l'oeuil marble inside instead of the real thing, and bare plank floors upstairs - in the Eastern US or England at this time I think they would have been covered by "Turkey carpets.") The grounds include a pretty dovecote (visible prominently from York Boulevard), a rather boring gift shop, a military museum of somewhat moderate interest, an strange little building used for cockfighting (!), and the most interesting, a lovely heirloom garden with an excellent interpreter. The tour plus the museum and garden take about 90 minutes to see. I felt the $11 price tag was worth it and suited to the scale of the property. I learned some interesting tidbits of Canadian history, and the house, despite some of the cost-cutting of the orginal inhabitants, is quite lovely and has some truly unique touches. Well worth a trip to Hamilton. Remember to leave early as the QEW traffic on a summer weekend will add another hour to the trip.

Yelp
Me and my wife visited the place recently and it was pretty interesting. Pros: 1. The area is beautiful 2. The place has a good collection of old and antique things. Cons: 1. All the rooms are closed off. So you will have to see them from far. 2. If you have visited original castles in UK and France, this would look like a house compared it. Over all a great historical site to visit as a day trip. If you visiting on a busy day make sure to arrive early as parking is limited.

Yelp
Definitely worth visiting this historic mansion The tour guides are very knowledgeable and the historical artifacts well preserved.
