15 Beautiful Castles in Ireland to Inspire Your Next Trip to the Emerald Isle

"Dunlough Castle, also known as Three Castles, is an early 13th-century fortification located at the head of Dunlough Bay on the Mizen Peninsula in County Cork, Ireland. The remains of the three fortified towers, the middle of which was the main residential area, are all that is left of this once important stronghold. Surrounded by a moat carved out of the rock, Dunlough Castle is accessible only by a single narrow stone bridge, making it one of the more remote and dramatic castle ruins in Ireland." - Travel + Leisure Editors

I visited here on a August Bank Holiday Saturday morning and it's an incredibly beautiful place to visit. The entry fee is €3 per person. Sometimes there's a guy at the gate, sometimes you just put the money into a box at as you walk towards the castle. The carpark is big and the walk up to the castle takes about 30 minutes through fields of well beaten paths. It's a safe walk but best with comfortable footwear. It's closed from Jan 3rd to late April.

It is a very powerful place. Good parking. €3 pp but worth it. It's quite a walk to get there. We went on a very misty day, which was a pity about the views around cause of the sheer cliffs. But it made the place very haunted. It must ve been a huge settlement and the remaining pieces let's you only speculate. I'd wish there was a little more information about it available at the spot. If you love architecture, it's a must, as the walls are very unique built. See for yourself

What an incredible, atmospheric, magical location! The castle has three towers, and you can walk along it. It is perched over a beautiful lake, with cliffs behind it. Very much recommend the walk from the car park (€3 per person), easy to navigate. The trails get much smaller and harder to follow after the castle, and you may have to trudge through some long grasses or heather if you lose the path. I do recommend going up to the cairn at the top of the hill behind the castle - but not necessarily beyond, as the trail is hard to find.

Good place for light hiking, beautiful views, castle is placed in unique spot. Around castle are tiny paths to go all around and enjoy nature. Behind parking lot you go down stairs to the ‘wild pool’ and to the small harbor. Tickets 3 € per person.

A truly unforgettable experience, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. It is a bit of a hike to get there but well worth it! There is a free car park and a donation box at the gate, the proceeds of which go towards upkeep of the area and the rest to charity. When you reach the ruins and lake area, take note of the silence, it's really quite surreal.

While remote to get to, and the climb is steep and muddy in places, you can make your way up over breathtaking views of headlands being crashed upon by Atlantic waves to find an 800 year old castle ruins overlooking a small lake, with the sea behind you. A beautiful spot and I will return to explore further.
