14 Places to Explore Viking Lore

"For centuries the relatively small Dunmore Cave has been fascinating writers, archeologists and explorers, and while it’s open to visitors today as a lovely bit of geology, it is possibly most famed as the site of a Viking massacre. The limestone cave, located in County Kilkenny, has been known to modern archeologists since the mid-1800s when the first serious expedition into the depths of the cave was undertaken, however the site was known for centuries prior. The first mention of the cavern is in a 9th century Irish triad poem where it is mentioned as one of the “darkest places in Ireland.” The next mention of the cave is the most sensational, however, where the cave gets named in a 17th century manuscript as the site of a Viking battle that took place in 928 CE that racked up 1,000 casualties. While pieces of gold and silver have famously been found in the depths of the cave, researchers have also found a number of human remains that give some credence to the tale of a massacre (although certainly not enough to prove 1,000 people were killed there). Since the 1960s the cave has been open as a show cave for visitors to explore. A small amount of safety infrastructure was installed including a roof over the cave mouth to prevent debris from raining down as people enter. However there has been no talk of what’s being done about the souls of the restless nords lingering in the air." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Cave was a cool place to explore literally! It’s cold inside, so dress warm. The rock formations were interesting, and the guide shared some fun facts. No underground pool like we expected, but still worth a visit if you’re into nature and caves.

Dunmore Cave – A Hidden Gem Near Kilkenny If you’re visiting Kilkenny, Dunmore Cave is absolutely worth a stop. Located just a short drive from the city, this fascinating site combines natural beauty with a touch of Irish history and legend. The cave itself is impressive, with dramatic limestone formations, underground chambers, and a cool, mysterious atmosphere. Guided tours are available, and the guides do a fantastic job of explaining both the geology and the folklore connected to the cave. One of the most interesting parts is the story of the Viking massacre that took place here centuries ago – a mix of history and myth that makes the visit even more memorable. Entry is very affordable: €5 for adults, €3 for teenagers, and children under 18 can enter for free. It’s a great value for such a unique experience. The visitor centre is small but informative, with displays that help you understand the cave’s significance. Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket – it can be quite cool inside. Overall, Dunmore Cave is a perfect short excursion from Kilkenny, offering both education and adventure for all ages.

Google
Great cave. Had been here twice already. Amazing prices as just 5 euro. Going with the guide always. You can't go by yourself. Guided tour takes approximately 40- 50 minutes and many steps going down and then up. So be ready with your stamina.

Google
Nice experience to visit Dunmore cave, guided tour with experienced staff, and described the cave and its geological phenomena with time. Great time to spend there. The place is located in the outskirts, very peaceful.

Giant entrance to the cave and multiple chambers with a cathedral and largest stalactite in Ireland (more than a million year of nature’s work). 350 steps down to cave, very safe and easy to walk to around for kids and adults. Railings all the way. The tour and OPW team has done real good work for reasonable prices. We had fun one hour tour, will bring my family/guest next time they will visit.

Wanted to pop into Dunmore Cave for a quick look and soak up the atmosphere—but no such luck. You're required to take the guided tour, which is heavily geared toward school groups and younger visitors. What could have been a fascinating, moody descent into natural wonder ended up feeling more like a classroom lecture... underground. The guide, although not too friendly, tried well enough with his long-winded explanation of stalactites and limestone erosion, but these could’ve easily been summed up in under five minutes. Instead, it felt like we were trapped in an educational reenactment of a 5th grade science unit. I wasn’t there for a geology lesson—I just wanted to explore and look around but we were forced to stay with the group and listen to the lecture. Yet again, another natural gem turned into a sanitized, spoon-fed “experience.” If you’re looking for a cave with a bit of mystery and room to roam, you might want to look elsewhere.

The most marvellous cave I have ever visited!!! Huge with an amazing energy! The many stairs are not steep and easy to go. 5€ entrance fee, carparking is free, no Coffee Shop.

Yelp
To me a cave is a cave. Big or small it's still a giant hole in the ground. This tour is about forty minutes long. Not because of the sites to see, but because of how long the tour guide takes to share some interesting history. Overall, it's a nice cave to visit. The people who work there are beyond friendly, happy to help you with any tourist questions and serve as a great guide. Plus a lovely little dog is there to visit! So the cave has five main areas. Each where you stop to look at the wall and learn about the water, rocks, animals and history. I wasn't super enthused but of all the things you can do in Ireland, it's not so bad. Heard it's the best of the caves to see, depends on what you're into and your attention span. At the very end we had the option to stand in complete darkness, it was so scary! You couldn't even see your hand front of your face. We did get to see a bat though!

Yelp
On our tour of Kilkenny we were given the option of taking the Dunmore Cave tour. Well, when else will I get the chance to explore a cave in Ireland?! Probably not ever again so we decided we were going down, down, down into the Dunmore Cave. The guided tour of the cave took about 30 minutes. There was a lot of information provided about the history of the cave, the physical traits of the cave, ect. ect. I wasn't that interested about the cave's physical makeup but it was definitely interesting to see something that was part of Irish history. I would recommend this tour if you have time to spare in/around Kilkenny.

Yelp
We spent a night in Kilkenny on our way to Dublin, so we stopped here on the way. It feels like you're in the middle of nowhere, but what a great place! You go down these massive steps straight underground. The tour guide was the best part. He was so enthusiastic and a wonderful storyteller! He told about a massacre that happened there and at the end of the tour he briefly turned out all the lights to illustrate how truly pitch black it it's down there. He really made the whole thing memorable. If you're anywhere nearby, this is worth checking out.

Yelp
It's pretty weird reviewing a cave that costs €5/person, but here goes. It's cold, dark, and very cave-like. We went on a self-guided tour and it was pretty cool listening in on the guided tours that were happening nearby. Needless to say, there's some interesting history here.

Yelp
For €4, this place is a steal and well worth the visit if you're visiting Kilkenny (it's inly about six miles north of the town). The tour guide we had was quite informative. She told us not just about how the cave was formed, but also about historical human activity in and around the cave. There is also a small cafe with sandwiches, muffins, coffee, and various bottled drinks at reasonable prices.

Amanda J.

Yelp
The tour greatly exceeded our expectations. Hearing the historical background was fascinating, guides were knowledge. Highly recommend this if you are in the area. It's a lovely drive from Kilkenny. Cost was only €5. Might want to bring a sweater, it's chilly in the cave.

Yelp
Dunmore Cave is a geological wonder. Carved out of the limestone by melted glaciers that formed underground streams and rivers, it has many beautiful formations, stalactites and stalagmites. The guide and staff were welcoming. The guide was entertaining and informative. It's a fun day out. NOTE: it's a lot of steps to climb down into. May not be suitable for little kids.

Amanda T.

Yelp
Awesome cave, didn't have a long wait due to the off season, discovered it was a site of a Viking massacre. Another must see in Ireland!! lots of steps so bring your walking shoes

Yelp
We loved our tour guide, the experience, and the pup in the parking lot who greeted everyone coming in. Worth the stop for kids and adults.
