Mother Vine Scuppernong Wine – Rose Hill, North Carolina - Gastro Obscura

"As 16th century European explorers landed on the shores of modern-day North Carolina, they continually wrote home about the grapes. In 1584, a British captain described a land “so full of grapes as the very beating and surge of the sea overflowed them.” The following year, another globetrotter noted “grapes of such greatness, yet wild, as France, Spain, nor Italy hath no greater.” These strangers were captivated by none other than muscadines (Vitis rotundifolia), America’s oldest known species of native grape. And where there are grapes, wine is never far away. On Roanoke Island, the pioneers encountered one particularly robust tangle of grape bush, now known as the Mother Vine. Pickers could literally shake the ripe fruit off the vine, yielding plentiful quantities of exceptionally sweet, slightly musky juice housed in protectively thick, bitter skin. As such, its popularity grew, and locals renamed the grapes “scuppernong” due to its proximity to the Scuppernong River. After more than four centuries, this seminal vine has a two foot–thick trunk and has, at times, stretched more than half an acre. Those who want to see the impressively old vine can simply visit its home in Manteo. If you’d like to taste its bounty, however, head to the Duplin Winery in Rose Hill. In the early 2000s, Duplin, the state’s oldest and largest winery, began experimenting with several thousand clippings taken directly from the Mother Vine herself. Of 5,000 attempted, just over 100 set roots, and from them grew Duplin’s very own Mother Vine vineyard. Scuppernong grapes from the transplanted Mother Vine are harvested in September, reaching markets by early June each year. These white wines tend to have a distinct sweetness balanced by acidity and the historic grape’s characteristic musky flavor. Know Before You Go The winery offers tours and tastings. On the way, don't forget to stop by the "world's largest frying pan." - rachelrummel

We had a wine tasting with Loretta and she was a blessing. We had a great time with her. We shopped in the gift shop and made friends with Anne that checked out our purchase. We went back the second day and Anne greeted us when we came in. Just a friendly group of folks that know what excellent customer service is all about. Highly recommend.

An awesome stop, making me wish I had more time. I walked through, saw the tasting rooms and the bistro, and they told me about the chapel where they do weddings. Prices were surprisingly less than what I thought they might be. And it's easily accessible to all. Large parking lots, and very nice staff.

Google
The staff is wonderful and their variets of wine keeps growing. All made by Duplin. If you want some flavorful wine inspired decor and accessories, they have those too in their store section. The thing I didn't know is that their bistro serves amazing food at reasonable prices. Service was great and the ownership takes pride of their store. I would recommend anyone that is 21+ to give it a visit and check out their tasting room and the attached restaurant. I've revisited since last time with my parents and had an excellent experience with the dine in option and chose the chefs special and was not disappointed. Every bite was great and the whole party enjoyed their food.

I really enjoyed this place! We stopped by here on a quick trip from the southern Beaches of NC back to the triangle as it was on the way. We waited about an hour for a table but were able to shop around the gift shop and grab some wine! For younger folk, they have N.A. wine to feel included:)

My first time visiting. Love the atmosphere and the people were very helpful and friendly. Had the chicken salad sandwich and chili which were yummy. Followed by the new Holly Rose which was great too. They do $12 wine tastings and also have a wonderful gift shop and wine shop as well...bought 2 bottles.

Absolutely loved my first experience here. Shout out to Tom who did the wine tasting. He knows his stuff. I appreciate the kind people who work there, that took the time to make sure I enjoyed myself. Great, Great vibe.

Had the most wonderful lunch with my mom today!!! Amanda was our server, and Ansley the host was an absolute sweetheart. I accidentally ordered a dish with chicken, and being a vegetarian, they took it off the bill for us. Such an amazing experience and I wholeheartedly recommend checking out the bistro for anyone who LOVES great food and great service!!!! If I could rate 6 stars I would :)

Yelp
Great vibe and friendly service. I wish we could have stayed longer but just happened to find this prize while passing thru town. The wine was delicious! (Grabbed a couple bottles to take home). I love the wine centered on the muscadine grapes. You can really taste them. The band playing was awesome and engaged. We only got to hear a few songs so I really wish we got there earlier.

Yelp
After starting my wine drinking with Duplin wines (Hatteras Red) years ago, I was pretty excited to finally get to visit the original winery! We did the wine tasting and did not have that long of a wait. It is definitely different than your traditional winery as you do group tastings with one server at Duplin. Also, you do not get to pick the wines you want to try, instead it is preselected - which I suppose is nice because you get a well-rounded balance to try, but I know right away when there will be ones I do not like and will be wasting. Our wine flight: Carlos - too dry for me. Magnolia - too dry for me, but better than Carlos Muscadine Moscato - I was excited to finally try the first ever muscadine moscato blend, and it was SO good! They also threw in a taste of the Southern Mist, which is the bubbly version. I thought I'd like that one better, but it turns out, Muscadine Moscato was definitely my preference. Sweet Lily - very good, sweet bubbly wine. I do prefer the Sweet Rose bubbly wine to this one, but this one is still very enjoyable. Scuppernong - just okay. Burgundy - too dry for me. Pink Magnolia - just okay Bald Head Red - Good! Sangria Red - Good. I actually prefer their Sangria White or Sangria Rose over the red. Peach Cotton Candy - definitely a sweet one, and it was good! The tasting came with a glass of wine - you go to their bar where they have all the wines available. We tried a sip of a couple before ultimately choosing what we would have. My husband went with the Sweet Lily and I went with the Sweet Rose. Overall, not my favorite NC winery as I prefer traditional 1:1 tastings and places that are more relaxed, but I'm glad we finally got to visit Duplin. We went home with a bottle of the Muscadine Moscato and Sweet Rose as those are not easy to find in the stores here in Charlotte. I recommend a stop at Duplin if you are in the area and have time to visit.

Yelp
Great for a group trip. We had a timed reservation for the winery tour. You do have to drive down the road about 1 miles to the production center. No pictures allowed inside as we were walked through the process of making muscadine wine at the largest muscadine winery in the world. Our tour guide was informative and energetic. We learned a lot of interesting wine trivia. At the end we were given samples and a complimentary bottle of their best selling red wine. After the tour our group did a tasting. No choices. You get what is on their tasting menu. The tasting rooms are really nicely set up for a group. Your given a tasting notes sheet and catalog. With your tasting you get 1 complimentary glass of wine from their tasting list, conveniently redeemed in the very large gift shop. If you have never had muscadine, just be prepared for a sweet grape with a very unique taste.

Yelp
A must stop for muscadine wine lovers. The winery is easy to locate and you pass beautiful vineyards on your drive there. I parked conveniently right out front. I used the restroom and then perused the shop. The winery is packed with numerous items available to purchase and bottles after bottles of wine. They had more than enough flavors to choose from and all seemed reasonably priced (about $6-$20). I decided on a bottle of Hatteras Red and a bottle of Blackberry Wine. They do offer tastings, but I did not have time. We drank the wine at a later date and really enjoyed it. It had a good flavor without being overwhelmingly sweet (as some muscadine wines can be). Overall, we had a good experience and recommend this winery to others!

Yelp
Road trip with our 50+ group to Duplin Winery in Rose Hill. We had a reservation at the Bistro restaurant for 25 seated together although our group was 35. We were told they would only reserve 25. The remainder of our party made their own reservations and did not sit in the same area. No problem they were in the house. The servers were friendly and professional. They took our orders and answered questions asked. We were able to welcome our members and say a corporate prayer while waiting on our food. Beverages were served. One small table with 4 seated got their meals first. Everything was plated nicely and arrived hot. I ordered the Chef Special which was a three or four cheese lasagna. It looked tasty but didn't look like your typical lasagna pulled high with meat and sauce with noodles on the bottom. I didn't realize that it had meat which I do not eat. I ordered a Caesar salad and was satisfied. It was fresh and the salad dressing had a good flavor...also plentiful. I took the lasagna home. One table was delayed in getting their meals. Not sure if there was a problem. But needless to say all tables were not done at the same time...but we're worked it out. An 18% gratuity was added to each bill...not knowing and I didn't ask...most left an additional tip as well. After brunch our group shopped and several did a wine tasting. Overall everyone enjoyed the Duplin Winery and The Bistro. Several were interested in going back in December for the Christmas show.

Yelp
Stopped by on our drive home from the coast. This was a convenient halfway stop for lunch. They have a nice outdoor courtyard that was very quiet on a Monday. We went into the winery to taste a few wines so that we could have a glass with lunch but it took forever for someone to help us, and the place was empty. There were at least 3 people working who were oblivious to customers. When I finally got help I was able to taste a few wines but I honestly felt like I was inconveniencing them. I ended up quickly picking the blueberry cotton candy wine which was super sweet but good. They weren't doing table service at the outside tables so we ordered our food to go inside the Bistro and got it boxed up so we could eat outside. The chicken salad sandwich was a little sweet for my liking.

Yelp
The employees are super nice. We got there at 10am as soon as they opened and had a private wine tasting with just our party because we were the only ones there. Was amazing for $15. We were told stories about the wine and could taste a whole list of them and got a free glass of our choice from the list at the end. The only thing I did not enjoy was the $13 tour... It was only about a 10min long tour of one warehouse. And we weren't even shown the whole thing, only the front. And none of the workers were actually making any wine at the time. Not even bottling any of the wine. So we stood outside of the bottling room and watched a three minute video of how it's done. I'm just a little upset that me and my guests payed $13 each to watch a video of wine being made when we were all expecting to see it first hand. I think $13 would maybe be a good price if people were actually working and making wine in the warehouse while you tour, But just for stepping in the warehouse and walking around a few hundred feet and then being shown a video, I think the price should be more like $5 but, like I said, other than the tour, we had a good time with the tasting, and the employees were very nice! We will probably be coming back again just not doing the tour next time.

Yelp
Great food and service. Always enjoy eating here. The dining room is so decorative and inviting.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped by for lunch with our 5 year old foster son. We're wine club members so we got our complimentary glasses of wine. My wife had the chef's special- grilled chicken alfredo over linguine , I had the Summer Fruit Salad and our foster had the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. One of the waitstaff stopped by and brought him crayons and paper to draw on( that was great!). Everything was delicious!

Yelp
I really enjoyed visiting this winery on a Saturday afternoon. Me and my family enjoyed trying the 10 different wines through the tasting and also the crackers and homemade dip that came along with it. It was about 12 people or so in the tasting room and we all got a little booklet about the different wines and information on the winery as well as the tasting sheet with a pen so we could rate each wine. Afterwards we all had one drink ticket to redeem at the bar for a glass of wine of our choosing . They had some live music outside in the courtyard so we sat outside to enjoy our wine and music . Overall I had a good time here and would definitely come back.

Yelp
We went to the annual Grape Stomp and had to stop by the winery. I loved the Myrtle Beach location so much, I became a Club Member! This location is slightly different and has a few more rules. Our group did a tasting with Loretta. She kept saying that she was tired and we had to rush because they closed at 5pm. This was not good service especially to the people who had never been to a tasting. In addition, the young lady that checked us in messed up. Perhaps, they were overwhelmed due to the crowds as a result of the Grape Stomp. Hopefully, next year they will be better prepared. I love the wine! But think I'll stick to the Myrtle Beach location.

Yelp
If you like SWEET wine, you will enjoy this. I personally prefer less sweet. The tasting was fun regardless, and the shop has so many fun wine gifts. The Bistro restaurant attached has really good food.

Yelp
Dennis does an amazing and humorous tasting. Great explanations behind the wines and different ways to use them. Nolan made us feel welcome to have another glass on the lovely patio and was very ready to help with whatever we needed. Ann at the register was very welcoming and made jointing the heritage club a breeze. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
First Wine Tasting with Duplin Wine. Oh, boy what a interest treat during a pandemic. Bruce was our wine connoisseurs for this afternoon. He did a fantastic job on the history of the company, wine/recipe pairing. In my Bruce voice: if you don't drink a dry wine cook with it from pot roast to strawberry cakes. You must try their pineapple habanero dip don't worry it's not spicy but really good. A must with their homemade cracker's. Sign up for the wine club you will thank me later. You're welcome

Yelp
We went to the Old Country Christmas Dinner and show for my birthday. It was our first time at Duplin but we were welcomed with open arms. The entire staff really treats every guest like they are apart of the family. We started with a wine tasting. This part was really interesting because we got to learn how each wine is made and how they achieve various shades of red in the wine. All of the wine was spectacular but my absolute favorite was the Holiday Jingle Spice. We then were seated for dinner. We had a garden salad with muscadine lemon poppyseeds dressing, an applewood smoked pork loin with pineapple and muscadine Pico De Gallo on top, and for desert we had a the best gingerbread cheesecake. After dinner the show started and it was amazing! Such a talented cast. Curtis Lee was there to play the fiddle and he did phenomenal. Such a great time at Duplin!

Yelp
This surgery sweet, poor man's Boone's Farm tastes like something that only a resident of a bridge underpass would enjoy. I mean, I guess it is technically a "winery" in the same way that the fine folks who produce similar "bum wines" such as MD 20/20 and Richards Wild Irish Rose can claim to be wineries, but my God. This stuff is absolute swill. To quote the famous "Australian Table Wines" skit from Monty Python, "this is not a wine for drinking. This is a wine for laying down and avoiding".

Yelp
We decided to make an entire weekend of our visit. Rented a place on the beach and was in town for the grape stomp. It was a humid and rainy day...I was miserable. It had nothing to do with the event, just the weather. However, even if the weather was ideal, I'm not sure I would've had much fun. It was a lot of standing in one line after the other for something. There wasn't a lot of space to sit out and just enjoy the moment. I doubt we'll be back since it was a 4-hour drive from Charlotte.

Yelp
Love Duplin! We were introduced to Duplin Winery about 5 years ago and fell in love with it. It is a tradition for us to go every year when we come to North Carolina. Wine tasting is always fun. We usually have lunch at the Bistro afterwards and the head back to the store to gather our yearly supply of wine (we live in Ohio). Very nice part of our vacation and today we will be going to Duplin again. Thank you all so much for a great vacation experience. People are so friendly and willing to help you. My hat is off to you and your great staff.

Yelp
We stopped here on our way home from the beach. Obviously we had to go check out the world's largest frying pan that was in town first but then we headed to the winery. The tours were cancelled due to covid but the tastings were being held and they were socially distancing tasters quite well. We had Zack as our wine expert and he was such a sweet and well informed young man. He was very knowledgeable about the winery, the history, and was very personable as well. The wines are all great no matter what your preference is and they even have a wine slushie. I mean, come on! Yum! They have a cute gift shop as well and you could even order food. Definitely purchased some wine and some yummy habanero jam. If you are in the area I highly recommend this winery. I love the family feel it has.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
I came here with some girlfriends and we had a blast! They have the cutest gift shop and a ton of wine options. We bought our wine tasting through GROUPON since it saved us a couple dollars. I think we all ended up going home with a case of wine. We also ate at the restaurant they have on site. It was really good. I highly recommend making a day of it with lunch and the winetasting.
google avatar

Franklin L.

Yelp
My experience at the winery was a hot mess. I was in their retail store. This lady named Megan or Morgan was screaming at her co-workers. So much negativity and it seems the pandemic is making folks react without southern hospitality . I will not be coming back.
google avatar

Allan A.

Yelp
Billboards do work! Driving and saw a sign talking about a winery tour. The tour was free and we learned all about muscadine grapes and wine making. We then paid $5 pp for a wine tasting. This was an excellent and fun time. We sampled at least ten wines learning about each one's attributes. Very professional done. With a repeat visit when they are bottling in the fall. Check out their bistro for lunch next door.

Yelp
I absolutely love the tour and tastings here. This is truly my favorite winery because of the staff, wine, and all the deal that they offer. The tours are extremely informative. You learn all about the winery and see where they make the wine. The tour guide is always very knowledgeable and pleasant. The tasting is also filled with great information fun and definitely delicious wine. I like that you can go on a tasting every season and try different wines than prio tastings. There are always seasonal offerings. The Deluxe Tasting gives you the most. There are these delicious crackers and a dip made in house. If you enjoy the dip abd crackers you can always buy some to take home as well. The tasting has 10 different wines with a mix of sweet, dry and semi dry or sweet. You are also able to take your glass with you after the tasting and receive 1 glass of wine from the bar when it is over. Inside of Duplin there is housemade jams, jellies, dips and fudge that you can taste and purchase. There are many different items through the store for purchase and of course bottles of wine. They have a wine club that you can join as well. I haven't been to the restaurant or the theater dinner as of yet but it's definitely on my To Do list. If you are nearby or within a couple hours of Duplin and enjoy wine it is worth the drive.
google avatar

Veronica F.

Yelp
Love, love, love. The price for the wine tour was reasonable and you get to try 10 wines. The owner was funny and charismatic. The food at the restaurant was the bomb.com and the service was wonderful. I was given a menu with all the wines I was tasting and there was a section where I could jot down my food pairings. The owner was Nice enough to have the kitchen prepare our food before lunch service was over. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the sunny weather and view. I strongly suggest you buy their dip mix and wines. I will be returning again.

Yelp
My friend and I were visiting Raleigh, NC for the holidays and I've wanted to check this winery out for a long time. Every time I visit family in the South I make sure I visit Walmart to get my Duplin bottles of wine. My favorite is Muscadine and I love the muscadine grapes when they're in season in the summer time. I finally had a tasting partner and designated driver so off we went. The commute was just over an hour. I was surprised that it was open and then how crowded it was while we visited since it was a holiday weekend. The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. We started off with the tour of their production facility, which was about a two to three minute drive from the winery. Our tour guide was entertaining and informative. The wine tasting which was complimentary was a lot of fun. They gave our designated driver who really doesn't drink alcohol a complimentary non alcoholic frozen drink that was delicious. This was my first wine tasting where I actually liked multiple wines. For the record, I love sweet wines and most of Duplin wines are sweet. This was my first winery where I also purchased more than one bottle. I really enjoyed the sweet Caroline. We saw customers leaving with several boxes of wine. After the tasting we browsed around the big gift shop and enjoyed all the wine related trinkets available for purchase. Overall, we had a great time and this is a winery you should definitely check out.

Yelp
Very nice place! We got in and didn't have to wait very long for a tasting. But there is a beautiful store to shop around while you wait or grab a drink. Yummy dip and crackers during the tasting. We will be back!

Yelp
The Duplin Winery was excellent! We ate at The Bistro Ms. Pearl was so sweet and recommended a glass for me to drink. I had a house salad with the poppyseed muscadine dressing... AMAZING. The bread pudding was delicious. DO THE WINE TASTING. Joshua was so helpful during the wine tasting and in helping select wines. Ended up leaving with an entire case. I absolutely recommend for a day trip or if you are in the area.

Yelp
We always enjoy visiting Duplin Winery in Rose Hill. Karen is an awesome wine bar tender. She is so sweet and down to earth. We did not see her on this visit but hopefully she will be here next time. We always have a nice day when Duplin is involved Great food at the bistro and good times in the store. Love both locations:Rose Hill and Myrtle Beach.

Yelp
It was very nice for our first tripnout to Duplin Winery at Rose Hill. We had been to the Winery in Myrtle Beach for a wine tasting about a couple weeks ago, and wanted to go to the Rose Hill location...it was quite lovely! All of the staff were amazing and so helpful. Tammy in the bakery, and Mr. Bill at the main Bar and the other staff were so friendly and welcoming. We decided to have lunch at the Bistro and were so glad that we did...it was great!! Our server, Tori, was wonderful and gave awesome service - so cheerful and helpful. We started with some of the clam chowder (the soup du joir). It was very creamy and flavorful. We shared the Caesar Bacon Wrap and the Bacon Chedder Burger. The wrap was really good and a very large portion for the price. The burger was also very good and cooked well (medium). For sides, we chose french fries and pasta salad. Both were well seasoned and I must say the pasta salad was one of the best I have tasted. We, unfortunately, did not have room for dessert, but will surely not forget to save room for our next visit. We did try Tammy's sample of Red Velvet Cheesecake and I was quite surprised how good it was, as I am not really a fan of Red Velvet Cake, to be honest. I also must mention that all of the folks (patrons) were so friendly. It is a beautiful atmosphere to be in and is decorated so nicely. Also found out they have other events, so you can check on their website to see what the upcoming events are. Thank you so very much and see you again soon!! :)

Yelp
Duplin Wines are my absolute FAVORITE and the only wines I drink! My husband took me here on a surprise 17th anniversary weekend and it was amazing! The shop had a lovely selection of wines, gifts and gourmet products. The tasting was perfect and the staff was incredible. Each and every person we encountered was so nice and informative. I would love to visit again! Thank you!

Yelp
Love Duplin Wine. They just remodeled their entire facility. We joined the Heritage Club years ago and enjoy the discounts and getting a package of wine every quarter. The wine tasting with the crackers is always a highlight.
google avatar

Yelp
I love Duplin and their wine. They do free tastings and tours, everyday except Sundays. Everyone who works there is very knowledgeable and friendly (I like Bruce, he's the man!) The winery is great. Very clean and welcoming. I recommend joining the heritage club....shipments of wine every few months, discounts and members only events (like girls night out, trips....) The Bistro also has great food!!

Yelp
Visited on Valentines with my best friend we had the best time here. Jonathan helped us with our tasting he was very entertaining and funny. The wines we tried were all very good my favorite is the Magnolia and Sweet Poppy. We're already talking about going back great place to unwind and relax.

Yelp
Since my move to North Carolina five years ago, this has become my most favorite of places. The wines are amazing no matter what kind you prefer - I would bet you will find one you love. Staff is always simply amazing. If you have time, try the tasting experience - even if you have never tried a wine tasting it is so laid back and informative you will be comfortable, safe, and in great hands. Stay for lunch at the Bistro - it is crazy good. Chefs special is always a great choice. They also have an oh so beautiful wedding chapel. Great products provided by outstanding people. Join me as a Heritage Member and get quarterly shipments - you will not be disappointed. Truly awesome all around.

Yelp
We went here one Wednesday afternoon. Just a heads up-they have certain times they do the wine tastings. I'm not quite sure when; however, luckily, we arrived at 12:50, and the next one was at 1:15pm. During our wait time, we were able to enjoy the gift shop, and view the recent expansions of the new tasting rooms. The lady who checked us in ended up doing our wine tasting, and she was a hoot! She was such a sweet older lady, and she had such fun stories to tell! We did the $5 tasting, which included several wines, just no cheese samples. I liked the progression of wines. I'm not a huge fan of Duplin's super sweet, popular muscadine wines, and I was very happy that we tried lots of their drier wines as well. There was even a sample of the frozen drinks. After we completed the wine tasting, we ate lunch at the bistro next door. The food was good, but nothing special. I'm very glad we got to try this vineyard. It had been on my list for a while!

Yelp
Get a lot for your $10 tasting. Cheese crackers and free whole glass at the end of the tasting. They give you enough wine for three to four sips per tasting. The cheese and crackers offered were gourmet and fresh. My husband and I stopped in just to check it out on our way home from a road trip but had such a good experience with the tasting we plan on coming back with friends. The tastings take place in a private bar which was so nice. Miss Susan answered all of our questions and told us some of the coolest facts. She was cracking jokes and filling up glasses as soon as they were empty. Best wine tasting experience we've ever had and we've traveled all over the world. We just received the best customer service from the tasting to the register and enjoyed every wine we tasted.

Yelp
I enjoyed my time at Duplin! But the wait for a tasting was a little too long and the wearing of masks was not enforced at all. For a place as busy as this, I wish they would enforce the wearing of masks in the wine cellars while shopping and in the bistro when people are not eating or drinking. Even the staff were maskless.

Yelp
Am rating the winery not the wine. I am beer drinker, so do not want to say anything about the wine except that it was tasty to me. On the other hand the winery is small town southern with friendly staff, good value. Did the deluxe wine tasting with sips of 10 different wines. Good crackers and cheese dip to go with, then topped off with glass of favorite from the tasting. Able to sit out on porch and enjoy the afternoon. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I was introduced to duplin wine not too long ago but every single one I've tried, I've liked. So I wanted to try more and visit the winery. They have a restaurant on site but it does close at 3. I missed the restaurant but I'll definitely have to come back to try it! As far as the wine tasting goes, they take you to a wine tasting room, which they had recently renovated their wine tasting area- it had a cool horseshoe shaped bar! You get about 9-10 wine samples which was more than plenty for me. Depending on whether you choose the regular or the deluxe tasting, you get a free glass of wine of your choice from the tasting afterwards. Both tastings, you get a free wine glass. We picked up a few bottles! I think Hatteras Red is still my favorite but Brice's Creek was awesome too! I didn't know this until after but they are on Groupon!

Yelp
I had my first taste of Duplin wine in 2008 in Raleigh with my boyfriend (now husband) and his family before he deployed to Afghanistan. I only came to NC to visit since I was living in NJ at the time. I never forgot about it and when I moved to NC in 2011 I bought about 7 bottles. I had been wanting to go to this winery since then and finallllly my dream came true. I didn't go with my husband but with my best friend from NJ who tried it at the wine festival in Winston in 2013 when she came to visit me. The tour was really cool and you have to drive about a block and a half to it. The tour guide was very knowledgable and gave us a great back story as to how the winery came to be. Then we drove back to the winery and they had a tasting set up for our group right away which I thought was really cool. You try a flight of their wines from the really sweet muscadine to the drier muscadine wines they offer. they have something for everyone. They have a whole wall of wines where you can get a crate or box to carry your purchases. The winery was decorated beautifully for Christmas and they have a variety of wine related gifts to buy as well as a bistro attached. Loved this place and I will have to go back with my husband! You can also sit outside and enjoy your bottle or bottles of wine!

Yelp
Winery in Eastern North Carolina. They specialize in sweet muscadine grapes and they offer a 5 and 10 taste wine sampler. If you are military or part of their wine membership club, you get an additional glass of wine with pita chips and dip with the tasting. I went here with my wife and mother to let them have some fun tasting wine. If you are looking for bold flavors, realize that most of the Southern United States is suited for growing sweet grapes and not what you would normally find in Europe based on climate. Likewise, the wines are not heavy on tannins and typically a little sweeter than traditional wine. Overall the shop is really nice, the bottles range from $8 to $20 and they have a lot of items for sale. If you are in the area it is worth a visit. If you are a part of the wine club or military the free glass of wine ticket works at the bistro that is attached next to it which is pretty good southern style cooking.

Yelp
Fantastic visit! The winery had 2 wines, Southern Belle and Sweet Rose both delicious as all their wines. The gift shop's offering of wines bags with cute sayings are the perfect gift. See you again soon, Duplin.

Yelp
I'm not the best person to be rating this place as I am NOT a fan of sweet wine and whoa, all of their wines are SWEET!! The winery is very cute and they do wine tastings of groups of like 20-30 starting every 30 minutes. The tastings last about 45 minutes and you get to taste about 12 wines. I felt like they spent a lot of time during the tasting trying to get you to join their 'club' and talking about special events at the winery which made me feel a bit like I was trapped at a time share talk.

Yelp
Great wines and beautiful setting. Gift shop had a lot of great selections. The wine tasting was presented by Dennis. He was very knowledgeable, funny and gave a lot of pairing suggestions with food and cooking options. Very enjoyable. Can't wait to return again.
