Where to Stay in Amsterdam (Updated 2025)

"A classic, fun backpacker hostel, Durty Nelly’s Inn is tiny, cozy, and cheap; the beds are decent and each comes with its own reading light and power outlet. The staff are super knowledgeable and there’s a hearty breakfast too — if you want cheap accommodation and a place to meet travelers, this is one of my favorite hostels in the area." - Matthew Kepnes

The Best 9 Hostels in Amsterdam (Updated 2025)

"Located in the center of Amsterdam by the Red Light District, this is a classic, fun backpacker hostel where it's easy to meet other travelers; the staff are super knowledgeable, the hostel creates a great community, and there's a hearty breakfast. Beds are decent and each has a reading light and power outlet, guests get a discount in the pub downstairs, and because of the location it's very much a party hostel — don't come expecting a quiet night of sleep." - Matthew Kepnes

I was a bit worried after reading some of the negative reviews, but everything was perfect! All the staff members were perfectly pleasant and the rooms were clean. The only issues for me were the stairs (3 floors up with very steep stairs) and there was only 1 toilet for a whole room of people.

No complaints about the location or the staff .. made us very welcome and safe ..very central to everything.. close to rail . And can walk everywhere..pods where comfortable and private. No room for large suitcases in your room but can leave them downstairs ..stairs are steep but suit the building..always clean and neat . Only complaint is you have to go out for your morning coffee .. no provision in the hostel .

As "cheap" as you'll get in the centre of Amsterdam, especially the capsule beds amazed me. So private and noise cancelling, you wouldn't know you're sharing a room with 12 people. Bathroom was always clean. Just know there's no elevator and the stairs are narrow and steep, just like everywhere in Amsterdam.

I love this hostel. I arrived yesterday, until now it's perfect. The cabinets are clean and comfortable. The bar on the first floor makes a different. Good drinks and music

I stayed here at the end of March for three nights. I would like to highlight several things: the location is perfect as it's just a 12-minute walk from Central Station and 7 minutes or less from Dam Square. Despite being above a bar, there is no noise at all. The accommodation offers acceptable cleanliness (for a 5-euro deposit, they give you a lock, and for another 5 euros, a towel that you can change every day), and above all, excellent customer service. I had an issue with a guest who stayed in my capsule bed room; he was a very unpleasant man who tried to harass me and smelled very bad. I mentioned it to the reception, and Orlando, one of the receptionists (who also spoke Spanish), immediately gave me a spot in another room. He was very empathetic and blocked that individual so that he would have to leave the accommodation the next day. I really appreciated that, as I travel alone, I’m a woman, and it’s always nice to find such great treatment and understanding when you go through tough situations. I would definitely return and recommend it.

Second time back in Amsterdam and every place to stay was booked. This location was recommended by a friend and I absolutely loved it. The staff are amazing, accommodation was simple and the location is great (central to everything - trams, too)! If you arrive early, there are lockers to store your items before check-in. Rooms and washrooms are both cleaned well, no issues! Looking forward to coming again!

Wow—what an incredible stay! I honestly can’t fault a single thing. From the super friendly staff to the cozy, clean accommodation, everything was spot-on. The location? Perfect. Right in the buzzing heart of Amsterdam, with shops, transport, and all the action just steps away. A lovely surprise was the discount package at check-in—such a thoughtful bonus that made exploring even better! Huge shoutout to the entire team for making my stay so memorable. Already counting down the days until I can come back! 💥🇳🇱🙌

I arrived at the hostel on Saturday around 1:00 PM to check in. According to the information on Booking.com, check-in was supposed to start at 2:00 PM. However, the receptionist — who had recently started working there — told me check-in would only be possible at 3:00 PM. I accepted and waited in the workspace area near the reception, which is available for guests. While I was waiting, another guest — who shares the same nationality as me — was speaking quietly on his phone, without disturbing anyone. The receptionist approached him rudely and told him to hang up. The guest complied and remained there charging his phone. When the receptionist saw a packet of rolling tobacco with him, he ordered him to leave, accusing him of smoking, even though he clearly wasn’t. The guest was simply rolling a cigarette — which, for the record, was not cannabis, even though we were in a city where cannabis tourism is common. The receptionist confronted him again in an unnecessarily aggressive tone and told him he was being expelled. During this interaction, he made homophobic remarks, clearly targeting the guest’s sexual orientation. The guest tried to remain calm and said he would call the police. I intervened to help de-escalate the situation, and eventually, the other guest left the space. I stayed, waiting to check in. The receptionist then began my check-in but warned me rudely that if he had to “warn me again,” I would also be expelled. I asked politely when I had been warned, as I hadn’t even checked in yet. He claimed I interrupted a phone call of his — which I wasn’t aware was happening — and then called me an "idiot" in French. I responded that he was the idiot, at which point he threw my ID on the floor and told me I was expelled. It was a humiliating and extremely stressful experience. Later on, the manager arrived, spoke with me, apologized, and said the employee would be removed. He completed my check-in himself. However, the same employee is still working at the hostel and has continued to make passive-aggressive remarks and provocations toward me since then.
