The 17 Most Important California Vineyards That Wine Lovers Need to Know

"Dutton Ranch is an archipelago of 74 variously-sized vineyards boasting 1,100 combined total acres of pristine grapevines across the Russian River Valley and Green Valley AVAs. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir lead the pack, along with plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Syrah, and some old-vine plantings of Zinfandel." - Jonathan Cristaldi

We had a very enjoyable time at Dutton Ranch Winery! The wines were excellent and the service was top notch. We had our kids and pup with us because we were on a quick visit to the area, but everyone enjoyed themselves. Dustin was awesome! He had treats for the kids and the happy pup. He also did a few magic tricks. We will be back on our next trip!

Great tasting experience and Laurie is fantastic! Love their 2023 Kyndall’s reserve Chardonnay.

I had an incredible experience at Dutton Estate Winery, and it was all thanks to Melissa Mifsud! She was so welcoming and knowledgeable, making the entire visit feel personal and special. Melissa’s insights into the wines truly enhanced our tasting experience, and you could tell she was passionate about what she does. The wine itself was absolutely amazing—each pour was unique and perfectly crafted. I can’t recommend this place enough! If you’re a wine lover or just looking for a great experience, Dutton Estate is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back!

We had a lovely wine tasting in the garden. Dustin performed some manic tricks which made it all the more memorable! I highly recommend a visit!

We visited Dutton Estate in June 2023, and the service was exceptional. We visited 6 vineyards on our trip, and most were very good, but this was the best service - completely exceeded our expectations. They wanted to make our visit special, and it showed in everything they did. Also, awesome chocolate pairings with Wine Country Chocolates!

Yesterday’s experience at Dutton was fantastic! We were a party of 8. Family and friends from Campbell, San Jose, San Ramon and across the street gathered at Dutton’s living room. We were treated as family by Laurie whose knowledge of the wines was only enhanced by the food pairings. It was a magical afternoon enjoyed and appreciated by each and all

Google
Great wine and wonderful location. However their leadership and customer service is poor. We visited the winery for a barrel tasting event and ended up joining the club. We could envision coming back and enjoying the atmosphere and bring friends that would also join! The servers pouring the wine were energetic and fun! Unfortunately after we joined the manager on duty was very rude to our friends as well as her own employees. Actually made one server break down in front of the group. When I brought this to the attention of the Director the following week it was determined by them that it would be best to cancel my membership. Instead of addressing my concerns they dismissed my feedback entirely. I guess we dodged a bullet if this is typical of their service from the top down. Don't waste your time here.

We took a grape to glass trip at Dutton. We had an amazing experience there. Laurie was a wonderful host. She was very patient and took time to show us around. She was well informed about wines and arranged some wonderful pairings (ask her about vegan pairings) Highly recommend the place if you are looking for private laid back experience. We had a lot of fun art Dutton.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit here. The wine is very good which is important and the tasting room and gardens are beautiful with many Instagramable photo spots. The service was great everyone seemed to enjoy their jobs and know the wine well. I was excited to hear they do many events including a Pinot and Paws event I believe they called it. Its an event benefiting the local shelter or ASPCA I forget exactly but I do plan on going so I'll make sure I check in and leave another review then.

Yelp
A very small and intimate experience! Our party of 6 got a private room for wine tasting and smores. They specialize in red wines and our host Laurie was so nice and took good care of us. When there was an accident, she grabbed wine away and it worked like magic on my friends sweater!

Yelp
This is such a great find! It's convenient to downtown Santa Rosa, but as soon as you're here it seems like you've been transported to a different place. I loved the outdoor tasting area, it reminded me of my backyard is a great way that I wanted to spend some time. We enjoyed the wines and everyone who worked here was so nice and let us take our time.

Angelina B.

Yelp
Wonderful little winery! Very homey and quaint but you feel so special with the way you're treated well during your tasting experience. I would highly recommend the wines too and the cider that they recently released! The host is so knowledgeable and overall was very responsive and made us feel at home

Yelp
My wife and stumbled upon this place on our way into Guerneville. I knew this place existed but didn't know it would be so close to where we were visiting. Dutton Estate Winery was right off the main road. The building for the tasting was surrounded by the vineyard. We sat outside in a beautifully gardened area. Our hostess was very friendly and knowledgeable. We had a tasting of wines that was paired with different chocolates. She really knew what she was talking about and seemed to really like what she was doing. The wines were outstanding. My wife and I had a great experience and would highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Excellent service! Delicious wine tasting! Garden area is inviting and beautiful. Staff goes out of their way to answer questions and accommodate questions/requests.

Yelp
Had a great time visiting this winery. This was my second time visiting. The staff is soooooo friendly and both indoor and outdoor seating is great. Today was a beautiful day to sit outside at a picnic table for the candy/wine pairing. The wines are really good overall and the pairing was a fun change up from a normal tasting.

Christine D.

Yelp
Delicious wine, wonderful attentive service. We are looking forward to coming back again.

Yelp
We were hosted by Mari, who provided us a great service experience! The garden tasting we had featured a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Syrah. It was nice to be able to sit outside and enjoy good wine. We bought a couple of bottles to add to our collection.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I decided on a staycation here in Sonoma County and Dutton Estate Winery has been on the top of our wish list for over a year. We truly had a sensational experience from beginning to end. Booking our tasting was very easy and we were greeted with exemplary service. Our first taste was a crisp and refreshing drink, flavor filled with carbonation but this was not your typical copycat sparkling wine. Our memorable starter was a glass of the vibrant Dutton Estate Cider. This initial treat was not by accident, but incorporated the foundation of their winery, you were actually sipping on what this winery was built on. As we learned more about the winery, and nearby properties this was a remarkable, eye-opening history lesson and a peek inside a strong family legacy in our own backyard! We both struggle in our lives to get a day off of work and I felt like they knew that. Even though there were other tastings happening at nearby tables, we were receiving five star service as if in a private restaurant where we were the only guests in the room. Our experience was lead by a well versed and knowledgeable team member who blew me away since I was secretively looking for cliff notes on the palms of her hands as she continued to sound like she was a part of the Dutton family. All of the selected wine stood out on their own with a unique flavorful sampling. She was given the reins to create her own, well thought out magical parings that only enhanced these great wines. She was proud of where she works and only spoke from the heart. We are looking to go back very, very soon!

Yelp
Found Dutton on a wine tour and fell in love. Stopped by after another winery without a reservation and was greeted by Laurie who welcomed us in, even though it was 3:30 on Saturday. She gave us the whole experience! Took her time telling us about each wine and their new cider! We felt taken care of and appreciated. Of course it didn't hurt that the wine and cider we smooth and delicious. The grounds are beautiful and it is quite peaceful sitting and tasting. My mom and I both joined the wine club. Once I am released from another winders I belong to, I will increase my bottle subscription for sure! Laurie is absolutely lovely. She is knowledgeable, personable and funny! Make sure to make a reservation so you don't keep the poor lady late like we did.

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience at Dutton. Our amazing host Laurie was informative and helpful in answering all of our questions. We did the "grape to glass" experience and tasted 7 different wines and a cider, paired with charcuterie and chocolate. Exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
We were lucky enough to have had a break in the weather to spend a beautiful spring day at one of our local favorites, Dutton Estate. We made an appointment for 2pm with ease. We were immediately welcomed in the tasting room where we were greeted with Dutton Cider by our host. Next we went to a wonderful flight of wines outside with an excellently prepared pairing with cheese and charcuterie. We had so much fun with other guests and staff. We picked some of our favorite wines like Thomas Road Pinot Noir and Kyndall's Chard. The tasting room is always open and cozy, so much more local home feel. We are reminded by our laughs and cheer that we don't stop bye enough.

Yelp
Our hotel (Boon Hotel + Spa) recommended the food and wine pairing at Dutton Estate. They called and made us a reservation and we were in! (Our visit was on July 24th). Dutton Estate is basically on the highway. When we arrived I was a little underwhelmed by the ambiance since we had just come from Iron Horse Vineyards. We were seated at an outside round table on the patio. The gentleman pouring our wine was absolutely amazing. Literally, a one man show he was pouring wine for everyone on the property and racing up and down the stairs to make sure glasses were filled. Eventually, another girl came to give us our food samples. I wished they had come out one at a time, but I realized they were short staffed and it was fine. This was the pairing menu: Sweet Melon Wrapped in Prosciutto paired with Rose of Pinot Noir ($25 a bottle) Chilled Summer Corn Shooter paired with Warren's Collection Chardonnay ($46 a bottle) Warm Cheddar Cheese and Red Pepper Spread paired with Thomas Road Pinot Noir ($65 a bottle) Savory Shortbread Cookie paired with My Father's Syrah ($50 a bottle) Curried Chicken Salad on a dried Apple Chip paired with Gravenstein & Gold Delicious Hard Apple Cider ($12 a bottle) This experience was phenomenal. It's true that the right food with wine & vice versa totally elevates the flavor profile. My cousin is a sommelier in South Carolina and my mom has been to the best wineries that Napa & Sonoma County have to offer with him (they get the royal treatment) and she said this was the best experience she's ever had at a winery. Period. In fact, she bought so many bottles of wine, they waived the tasting fees.

Yelp
Beautiful family-focused winery in Sonoma Valley! The place is easily accessible and offers lots of outdoor space to sit and try some delicious wines. The wines are truly superb - the whites are not as oak-forward as others you've had, and I''m ok with that! I also love how the grapes are all grown in such a small area of the valley and all wines are truly crafted with care. And the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. You've definitely got to check Dutton out!
google avatar

Stacia L.

Yelp
This is a destination for great cordiality and fantastic wine. Thank you Mina for making us feel special while accommodating so many others. And, the wine is so delicious and the garden is beautiful!

M L.

Yelp
I wouldn't change a single thing about my experience wine tasting at Dutton Estate. On a Thursday at 3pm I had the garden to myself, and the landscaping is truly ethereal. Think agapanthus, butterfly bushes, roses, and some kind of magical purple tree. The wines and the service are phenomenal as well. This will be absolutely be my first choice for wine tasting next time I'm in Northern California.

Yelp
I live locally but I had two friends visiting from out of town so I took them to a few wineries and Dutton Estate was their favorite for not only the delicious variety of wine but also for the beautiful atmosphere which was only made better by Riley!! She shared how her father also works at Dutton Estate and how she's basically grown up with the Dutton's and the winery which just really brought in the whole "family feel" if you get the privilege of having Riley pour for you don't be fooled by her young face she knows her stuff and is passionate about it!

Joseph S.

Yelp
The atmosphere is incredible! We enjoyed the wine and cheese pairing - and will try the chocolate pairing next time. Great wines.

Julie W.

Yelp
I absolutely love Dutton! I've been a wine member for years, but haven't visited in a long time. Laurie was our fabulous server yesterday and we had an amazing tasting. Lots of new upgrades at the vineyard, but still has the old school charm. Thank you again Laurie!

Yelp
A few of us went to Dutton for a wine tasting with food pairing. My husband and I got the vegan version. They served a few types of Miyokos specialty cheeses and crackers. I was happy just to not to be left out of the food pairing, but thrilled when I realized the cheese was not only very good but legitimately paired well with the wines. And the wines were delicious, especially the Pinot noirs, though I was surprised how enjoyable their cider was also. The staff were friendly and attentive. I will be back!

Yelp
During our recent vacation we visited many wineries but in discovering Dutton's we truly found a hidden treasure! It was overall the best experience of all that we saw. This family-owned and operated winery (Mom, Dad, three sisters!) made us feel welcomed, relaxed and appreciated during our visit, as if we were friends stopping by their home. At the top, the selection of wines were uniformly excellent and the pairings with food and local-crafted chocolates were well matched and a delight. The service by Mom and daughters was excellent, attentive and personal throughout our whole visit. We are planning our next vacation to wine country for the coming fall harvest and we can't wait to visit our new friends at Dutton's!

Yelp
One of the best experiences we have had wine tasting! Family owned and operated, Dutton Estate made us feel right at home. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and elevated our experience to make it a tasting to remember. Thank you to everyone at Dutton Estate for welcoming us as family, producing impeccable wine and providing unforgettable experience. P.S. try their hard cider!

Yelp
Loved it here! My group of 5 came here on Dec 31. No reservation. Chris was our server and he was wonderful. I loved coming here because of the unique food and wine pairing. Usually, it's just wine and cheese but the food tastings were phenomenal. The best part of Dutton Estate was learning that the three daughters all of K names - just like the Kardashians. In fact, two of them are named Kendall and Kylie. Hilarious. I bought the bottle of white wine named after Kylie in her honor. The biggest disappointment was that Chris spells his name with a "C" and not a "K" - seems like an oversight :) In all seriousness, I would for sure come back here. Definitely worth it price-wise and the tasting room is really beautiful AND they have a photo booth in the front yard.

Gabrielle E.

Yelp
It's weird to me that Yelp knows I was at Dutton Estate last month (creepy phones are always listening!), but I decided to leave a review because it was great. The service was friendly, the landscaping was beautiful, and the wines were delicious. It was a lovely afternoon.
google avatar

Cori A.

Yelp
Great Mother's Day in wine country have wanted to visit Dutton for some time as it's listed on many of the Chardonnay's we enjoy as a source ~ their own wines are fantastic, Laurie, who helped us was knowledgeable, local to the area and was able to answer all questions we had. Can't wait to visit again with the recommendations she gave us.
google avatar

Ken F.

Yelp
This is a family winery, and not the type of winery that has to put the word "family" on the label, as many others do for marketing purposes, because they are owned by a beverage conglomerate. They are family owned and the people who work there are locals who will treat you like family. If your looking for a Napa-like experience, where millions of dollars are employed to make the tasting room more like a showroom to sport their $100+ wines, this isn't your place. But if you are looking for a more intimate and home spun - the tasting room is actually a house - afternoon, you'll be delighted by the friendly and relaxed backyard setting, eager staff and highly regarded wine selection.
google avatar

Yelp
They participated in the Wine Barrel Event 2017. Lovely lovely decors and presentation of their place. They have their fancy airstream up front to welcome you with barrel tasting of their wines. And one of the highlights is their new apple cider paired with apple chips and brie. Then we head inside to the tasting room. WoW. It was a cute house. Very welcoming. Their Pinot Noir was paired with a meatball. Their late harvest syrah was paired with chocolate chips cookies. The pricing didn't change if you buy a case. It was a very pretty place. Family owned. You can see pictures of the families on the wall which reflects the name of their wines. Their gardens outside is well tended to. All the flowers were in bloom.
google avatar

Shannah S.

Yelp
This is a fabulous wine experience. (Seriously!) Wine tasting and expert food pairing at for $15 (waived with purchase of select wine bottles)??? Sign me up!! Every wine -- Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Pinot Noir -- was delicious and the pairings were perfect, with recipe cards upon request. The food pairings really do enhance the wines! They are expertly prepared with local ingredients by a chef in the back to perfectly compliment each of their wines. We even got a homemade chocolate chip cookie to go with the dessert wine. Everything was delicious! Friendly, helpful staff. Beautiful grounds. Unpretentious. Highly recommend a visit here if you're on the Rte 116 wine trail. You don't want to miss this experience!

Yelp
Seriously the best experience we have ever had wine tasting. Wonderful service, beautiful views and the most amazing wine we have ever tasted. I can't wait to come back and have another fun day with family and friends!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful, modest sized winery with impeccable service, a beautiful location, great wines, the kind of place you want to stay and linger. We had such a great time we bought two or three bottles... and opening them up, months later, we remembered our experience there and the wine was as good as we had remembered.

Yelp
With so many wineries along route 116 in Sonoma, the competition is fierce and the fun is plenty. During the recent fall wine club weekend it was Dutton Estate Winery that received my self-appointed best-overall award. It was the most beautifully decorated, friendliest, best paired wine & food, tastiest food, and most important...(drum roll)...best wine! All of the Dutton Estate Wines are excellent--a statement this wine aficionado does not often make! We were so impressed with their Warren's Collection Chardonnay and Manzana Vineyard Pinot Noir that, despite it being our first stop, we spent our entire wine allowance. It was a risky move but by the end of the day we could say with certainty that it was a wise decision.
google avatar

Drew P.

Yelp
This winery grows a ton of grapes they posted they grow the most in the area but so did Balletto not sure who is telling the truth. Both wineries are fantastic! Really good pinot noir and chardonnay. I usually do not like Syrah and they had a really good Syrah. At the end of the tasting, we even had a chance to try their cider which was very different from all the other ciders we have ever had it was made with Fuji apples - You would think its sweet but its perfect. Our wine attendant was fantastic, we got to try some bites with our wine tasting and got a tour of the place! (tour is not standard - maybe it is but it made us feel special :) ) Clean bathrooms, easy parking and easy to find.
google avatar

Dakota B.

Yelp
They made us bus our own table. Rude. I'll never join as a member because of this. Super lazy.
google avatar

Kit S.

Yelp
Ok, off the hook service and wines! Best chocolate and wine pairing that I have ever experienced, personally. Family run business and staff spent a lot of time explaining and detailing the wines. They had lovely grounds with both indoor and outdoor seating. Very kind to our elderly Chihuahua service dog. Did not taste a bad wine. Every wine we experienced was aromatic and had a phenomenal bouquet. We could have stayed for hours. We bought the Dutton Estate 2017 Kylie's Sauvignon Blanc and the 2016 Dutton Palms Vineyard Chardonnay. If money was no object, we would have bought a bottle of everything they had. A must stop winery! That you, Ladies for the treat! Well, done! Best, Bear and Kit!

Yelp
Lovely place - I have been here with colleagues and enjoyed the warm, friendly service. Hope to make it back again soon for some more of their Pinots!
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic tasting at Dutton Estate! Wine tasting with food pairing - free for Father's Day! Cynthia Newcomb, the winery chef, taught us so much about the various wines, the methods used making them, why they differ, in addition to sharing her recipes. We had a delightful visit and loved the wines we had. They even rewarded our patient children with chocolate chip thumb print cookies with delicious jam in the thumb print! Thank you, Cynthia!

Larry B.

Yelp
Great experience! The setting is spectacular. Its located in a lovely older home that has been converted into a very useful tasting spot. Private intimate rooms are available as well as a walk up bar. Beautifully manicured grounds with several seating areas are perfect for tasting the delicious wines. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Wines made by this family are great. Definitely a must go to when you are in the area.

Yelp
2.5... If you're into Pinot Niors, this is the place for you. Many accolades for their estate wines, thus our trek to get to this small winery. It was literally a house, not what I expected. Yes it was cute and quaint, but it did get busy for the two people who worked there. We weren't sure how the pairing went. We weren't explained about how the tastings/pairings worked so we just started trying different wines. At least, they provided some homemade snacks on the side to curb the alchy in the system. For me, the Pinots were a bit strong for my palate and I opted to try the whites offered on the tasting. I wasn't a fan so motioned my way over to the chocolate cookies. The tasting fee is waived/applied to a purchase. We did walk away with a bottle ($40), although the bottles were fairly $$$.
google avatar

Macy F.

Yelp
I absolutely love this winery! The wine, pairings, and service was absolutely outstanding. You have the option to sit indoors or outdoors, and the views are beautiful. This is a family owned winery and I felt that the entire time. Thank you for having me, I will be back!
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
A small, quaint winery in the Russian River Valley, Dutton Estate was actually an impromptu visit as I had mistaken it for Dutton-Goldfield. Seeing as we were already there though, my friends and I figured why not. Two tastings are offered at reasonable prices and the cost is waived if you buy a bottle (note: each flight has a minimum bottle purchase amount). I went with the reserve tasting and found the chardonnay and one of the pinot noirs to be quite good. However, they weren't nearly worth the hefty price tags. Additionally, the place is much more Napa-esque as you just go up to the bar, make your way through the wines and then decide on what you want. Our server was very friendly and made it a pleasant visit, but if you're looking for a legit wine tasting experience...you'd be better off looking elsewhere.
google avatar

Yelp
This winery continues to make me happy! I went there because I heard their Pinot's were good & I was doing my usual Friday Wine Tasting with friends. Dutton Estates we decided to make one of our stops. We didn't make it anywhere else! The wine was so good and we were being entertained by Alex & Meaghan the whole time. Best part they paired it with yummy little snacks of cheese and chocolate! After our tasting we wondered off and found this amazing backyard, so we bought a glass of wine and played Cornhole for another hour. Hands down my best day of wine tasting in Sebastopol .

Laura K.

Yelp
I really liked this family owned winery - they had nice outdoor tables to sit at. The wine flight was great, we especially liked the Rose and Pinot Noirs. Our wine expert was prompt and friendly too.

S H.

Yelp
This last weekend, we had a great experience at Dutton Estate Winery. It was a hot (!) day, and when we arrived, they offered to do the tasting in the air conditioned living room (although the gardens were lovely, and had it been even slightly cooler, I would have loved to be seated outside) Being an actual house, it very much felt like we were kicking back in a family living room. Mike greeted us with a smile, a little welcoming blackboard that said, "Welcome, Sarah", printed information on the flight we'd be tasting, and a cool pitcher of water. Mike was so warm, friendly and knowledgeable, sharing about the family history of the winery, answering questions (even dumb ones!) with warmth and humor, and peppering in little anecdotes about his own family (his wife says the Manzana Pinot pairs well with Netflix!). We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious wine, kicked back for a good 90 minutes, were attended to but not rushed. We bought some bottles of wine and the delicious hard cider and our tasting fees were waived. A really fun, relaxing, delicious experience with a family that knows its wine, and values you feeling like a part of the family. I'd definitely return.

Patrick K.

Yelp
Service was lack-luster. No interest in creating a rapport - seemed more interested in cooking their own "ribs-dinner." Asked us to bus our own wine glasses. Really? Wine was ok...certainly not up to par with others in the area. Highly unlikely to come back, let alone consider a membership. Empty place, no excitement, no thrills, no frills.

Yelp
Recently discovered this fun winery. Had a great experience with a wine tasting and food pairing at an incredibly reasonable cost of $15 (waived with purchase of select wine bottles -- we left with a Chardonnay). Every wine -- Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Pinot Noir -- was delicious and the pairings were perfect, with recipe cards upon request. Friendly, helpful staff. Spacious, open tasting room, with many gift items. The grounds are also a nice place to relax with a glass of wine. Extra points for being dog-friendly! Skip the crowds & high prices of Napa. Highly recommend a visit here if you're on the wine trail.

Chynna F.

Yelp
This place was such a disappointment. We spent over $200 collectively & were provided with terrible service (they asked us to bus our own table) and mediocre wine. This place seriously needs to get it together. If you want an exceptional experience, go to Macrostie. This place is seriously a joke. Who the heck allows an employee to make their own ribs at their place of employment and then only offer dime sized chocolate chip cookies?? We asked about food and she instructed that only people with reservations could receive a cheese plate but she would make an exception. Um. Excuse me. It was just the 5 of us - everyone else got the memo to not go there. So upset that we wasted time and money. Seriously. Thank u, next.

Jobas B.

Yelp
Friendly staff. The food pairing is an absolute must. Very tasty. And their wines are also delicious. The lady is very knowledgable and a bunch of the food pairings ingredients are local or she grew herself.

Yelp
$15 for reserve wines. $5 for estate (regular tasting)--or I might have these mixed up... Fees waived if you make a purchase. Our server helped to make our experience as unpleasant & uncomfortable as possible. Too many delicious wines and lovely people in the area to make this a place I'd consider returning.
