Savannah, Georgia Travel Guide: A Local Expert Shares What to Do in Savannah, Georgia — Where to Stay, Shop, and Eat

"Considered a Savannah staple, this independent bookstore opened its doors in 1975 and has been loved by Savannahians ever since. New and vintage books line the walls, and items like stationary and tote bags are perfect to stash in your carry-on. You might spot the bookstore's cats roaming between the towering stacks if you're lucky." - Karen Norian

10 Best Shops in Savannah

"Opened in 1975, E. Shaver is an independent bookstore filled with shelves and shelves of new and vintage volumes scaling the walls, posing in nooks and crannies and enticing bibliophiles to peruse. There is also stationery, tote bags, and kitschy gifts. But what's most memorable is the smell of books when you enter the store, and the feel of the cozy makeshift "hallways"—actually tall stack of books—with the store's resident cats roaming the aisles." - Barbara Skidmore

E. Shaver is an absolute delight for any book lover wandering through Savannah. It’s a warm, welcoming shop with a wide variety of genres. Whether you’re into classics, contemporary fiction, nonfiction, or children's literature, you'll find something special here. What makes this place truly memorable are the thoughtful touches: a curated selection of literature-themed gifts and souvenirs, and an operational typewriter set up for guests to leave their thoughts, musings, or bookish confessions. It's whimsical, nostalgic, and inviting. Whether you're hunting for your next read or a meaningful gift, this charming bookshop is a must-visit. A cozy, creative gem tucked into the heart of the city.

Google
So unique! We love a good book store, and we’re glad we visited E. Shaver Bookseller today. If I recall correctly, the building was built in the mid 1800s. It’s such a cool place, and it is packed with older and newer books. This place also has cats that lounge around in the open. Customers are welcome to pet them (as long as they’re kind and respectful). We were very impressed.

Google
This is one of the top 5 bookstores I’ve ever been to in my life and I’ve been to a lot of bookstores!!! The ambiance is wonderful and they have an old fashioned typewriter where you can type notes and hang them up and they have 4 cats roaming around ! Need I say more??? Oh and they offer free gift wrapping!! Make sure you go if you visit Savannah!!

Google
E Shaver Booksellers in Savannah is absolutely adorable! It’s a cozy, charming little bookstore with a fantastic variety of books—something for everyone. One of the coolest parts is the old-school typewriter where you can sit and write whatever you like. And let’s not forget the stars of the shop: the chubbiest, cutest resident cats who lounge around like they own the place. A must-visit if you love books, cats, and a bit of magic.

Google
Such a delight! I had to cut myself off once I couldn’t hold my books anymore, so I didn’t even explore half of the rooms here. Well-curated and merchandised, it felt like I was discovering so many hidden gems as I turned each corner. If you spend $100 (which I did) you get a free reusable bag! I hope to come back to Savannah and visit again. Friendly staff, great selection.

Google
Such a cute spot, loved walking around to find the cats. Love how every room is a different genre of books. I also like they have local authors that you might not find in other places or on larger book websites. Also had to pick up the famous book that everyone in town was talking about.

Google
One of my favorite bookstores :) I love books, stationery, and animals- like cats, and they have it all. This bookstore has a good collection of different genres, and just has a really cozy and lovely atmosphere. The store cats are adorable and it's a joy finding them throughout the store, sometimes in between books and sometimes sleeping. Every time I am in Savannah, I love visiting this bookstore and feel grateful it's around for us to frequent.

Google
This small community knit bookstore packs a punch. The staff are always welcoming and helpful. They’ve got a great variety of book selections: staff recs, local and Georgia-based authors, children’s, poetry, graphic novels, political, young adult, and so much more. The gift merchandise is also noteworthy and curated for book lovers alike. You can tell that the staff put so much passion and love into this place. Bonus: they’ve got cats!

Yelp
I was staying at The Desoto Hotel and noticed this beautiful store on my first night. It had been on my "places to go" while in Savannah. I stopped into The Book Lady, and she had referred my daughter to this store as well. In short, this store was very large. It might not look like it on the outside, but trust me I was in awe. There was a wide selection of items from drawings, to postcards, stickers, inspirational cards, and most importantly BOOKS. I feel that the value of the items purchased was fair. I am a book lover, so this was well within the range that I would averagely spend on books. I appreciated the funny cat humor around the store. Please understand that there were real cats in the store. Very cute, and mindful- however, people were very reluctant to obey the rules. Please obey the CAT RULES. The typewriter was such a cool feature to have within the store. My children had never seen or used one before. While I did visit before leaving, I wish that I had made the stop here before my last day. Check out their mystery books for your loved ones. You won't know which book you are purchasing until you review your receipt. I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
I'm going to give them five stars just because of the window shopping. Whoever puts the books in the windows is really good at curating collections and different themes. Is it the cats ??? I love this little shop... From the outside. I'm here for a conference and when I saw there was a bookstore behind the Desoto hotel, I almost fell off of the steps in the back of the hotel I'm at because I couldn't get over there quickly enough. Unfortunately, they are closed until the day I leave! They're doing something called inventory. Who cares about inventory? Lol Open the store! Let the people buy the books! It's always such a privilege to support a local bookstore. I'll get something from you online just to make up for the really poor customer service of doing an inventory while I'm in town.. You should look on your cameras as there are lots of people outside who want to come jn!! In all seriousness, best wishes to you and your shop. Never close! (Except for silly inventory time!)

Yelp
If you're going to hit up a bookstore in Savannah, skip the rest and go directly to E Shaver Bookseller. This bookstore is massive, filled with so many nooks and crannies, and each one of them has a plethora of goodies. Want books? They have them. Want souvenirs? They have them. Want cats? They have them. I should probably enlighten you a bit about the last two. This is quite literally a tourist's paradise. Aside from books, there are many Savannah staples here. Tea, coffee, t-shirts -- it's easy to do your souvenir shopping here. I know I bought lots of things, and among them, I count totes and shirts to name a couple. The reality is they have loads of stuff. Calendars, journals, sweets, umbrellas. You get the gist. They even have sections with books about Savannah alone. That is, of course, without the insane amount of books they sell here. There were at least a dozen rooms or what felt like them anyway. The best thing about these rooms, too, is the cats. Yes, you heard me! This is a cat's bookstore. You will find furry friends everywhere and be advised to not pet them. The day I went I only saw a ginger cat, but she was very sweet and just seemed to be curious as I kept going back and forth debating what to buy. I could swear I saw her smirk as I paid for my stuff, too. Nearly $150 later. Definitely a gimmicky bookstore, but I felt at home upon visiting. Cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
This was our favorite thing we did in Savannah! We were only in town for a couple of days and stumbled upon this shop on our walk back to the car to go home. Absolutely adorable shop with such a unique layout-- tons of twists and turns and pockets of cute spots to sit and read. I loved that each room was its own genre. They have a typewriter set up in a corner where you can type up a note and pin it to the walls! Our daughters really enjoyed that. And obviously, best of all, were the cats! There are 4 (?) resident cats tucked into little spots throughout the shop, in windows, under tables, etc. The shop owners have tshirts and custom stickers with their names on them for purchase. I got our girls cat stickers to remember the experience.

Yelp
This place is apparently pretty famous. It was actually one of the "must-see" spots for Spensyr on this trip... ? ‍ It's a book store. It's not a vintage, discount, out of print, old musty tomes bookstore though? It's a clean, well-lit, up to date, store selling the same books you can find at any other bookstore, for the same prices they'd cost at any bookstore. I think the appeal must simply be that it's a really old building in Savannah? In any event the staff is very nice, friendly and helpful. The clientele is as eclectic as the city itself, being a tourist destination it gets crowded but there's plenty of space for browsing the shelves, and some seating areas for relaxing as well. We never did get to see any of the cats.

Yelp
My favorite spot in Savannah. I love a local bookstore and this one may be my new favorite. First off, it's huge. It keeps going and going for rooms and rooms. Think you're done? Not even close. So much is packed into this store. They had such a large selection of every genre. Second, CATS! They have four cats that live in the bookstore and I've never seen a cuter door greeter. Third, they had a typewriter and I may have to have one (kidding, I think). I left with three new books and a gift for a friend and a smile on my face.

Yelp
Calling all Bibliophilia... You do not want to miss this wonderful book store. The front window invites you to come in and browse. Once inside you feel at home wanting to linger and meander around. Thumbing through books. Rubbing the sweet kitty. ( if he/she can be found) Looking at the frivolous necessities they offer. The books were reasonably priced. The cat (suppose to be 4 of them) was taking its break in the main front window. There are many nooks and crannies in this book store . Take your time and just relax .
google avatar

DeeAnn G.

Yelp
If you love books AND cats, (and I do!) this is the place for you! Great selection of interesting books in an old converted house with lots of little rooms and CATS! We are talking BIG fluffy cats that are super cute and friendly! Love this place! Pet a cat, get a book, grab a tea from next door and go sit in Madison Square and enjoy!

Yelp
Wish I could give zero stars. Visiting from another state 3,000 miles away and we decided to stop off here before my trip to the airport. I had my 90 year old father with me who uses a cane to balance himself. He asked if he could use their bathroom after he purchased a $40 book. Needless to say, they turned him down and he was not allowed to use it. Store policy, but no one else was in this store beside myself and 3 other people. They sent us to the SCAD store and they obviously saw he had trouble walking. Shocking!!! No empathy for the elderly. No one time exception... just plain ole assholes that run this store with a sweet ole drawl. Never again will I step foot in this store. Just awful disgusting people. I've got a suggestion for you idiots... how about bathrooms are for paying customers only!!!
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
Cute little bookstore with a great selection of fiction, true crime, bios and more. Shop for the books and write a note for yourself or the wall. Super cute store with some sleepy helper cats who always seem to be on break lol.
google avatar

Yelp
We love this place so much. A multi-roomed, gorgeously lit, and well-stocked independent bookstore, filled with comfortable seating and beautiful and sweet cats?!?! What more could you want in this world.

Yelp
Always and ever a fan of local booksellers, I knew I had to stop by here on a recent trip to Savannah. E Shaver is a book lovers delight. The shop is relatively small but they have packed it with literary goodness. It's well organized and I was able to find the section I was looking for and a fun read for my vacation. The prices are what you would expect to pay and overall the shop itself is charming. It is popular and the aisles are tight, so can be a bit of maneuvering to get around. It didn't bother me but my shopping companion had to hop out as it felt too crowded for him (he wasn't planning on getting a book anyway, so no biggie). My suggestion would be, in the interest of space, if you're in a group and not everyone actually wants to book shop--have those folks wait outside. But, other than that--a gem of a shop! Get to it!
google avatar

Cherine A.

Yelp
Our visit to E Shaver bookseller was easily one of our favorite parts of our Savannah trip -- so much so, we visited this bookstore twice in two days! On our first stop, we had a 45-minute wait for the Gryphon Tea Room across the street, so we decided to take a walk and check this place out. We didn't want to miss our spot though, so we didn't spend nearly enough time in here as we would've liked (and it turns out, we could've spent way more, since our 45-minute wait ended up being 90 minutes, but that's another story for another review). We both really wanted to come back and take our time, so we agreed to make another visit on our last day in Savannah, and I'm so glad we did. This is such a fun shop with so many nooks and crannies to explore. You could absolutely get lost in this place, in a good way. Not to mention, resident bookshop cats! The kitties only added to the charm of this place, and some clearly adored the attention they received from visitors. There are actually four cats in all, but I think only two of them actually like being around people all the time. If you buy a book that has been banned in a school district somewhere, they give you a fun "I read banned books" sticker, which my husband is now a proud owner of after his purchase. One particular feature we thought was so cool was their "blind date with a book" section. They are wrapped up in brown paper with descriptions. He and I each bought one, and I really enjoyed my book -- and I don't know that I would've picked it up otherwise. I will absolutely come back here anytime I'm in Savannah, because this is just the best little independent bookstore.

Yelp
The store has a Nice assortment of books available. The children's selection is very nice. The atmosphere is great. We liked all of the little cubby holes filled with books. The pricing was okay. The service needs to be a bit more friendly and engaging. Post COVID, service is a distinguishing factor when people have to spend their money. They should strive to be more friendly.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
This is easily the cutest book shop I've been inside in a long time. An absolutely full and adorable store, with a great selection and just an excellent vibe. Plus I loved their sign out front!

J G.

Yelp
Immediately when you walk in you are greeted by pleasant staff and quaint atmosphere. It is a book store in an old structure and so there are so many nooks and crannies to walk through and discover. Great selection of books. Beautifully laid out. It is also cozy and has 3 resident cats that just nap and roam. I am not a local but noticed at check out they have different book clubs. You can look up the details on their website. Excellent experience with cute surprises. A must visit while in Savannah.

Yelp
Oh my gosh I love this bookstore! I have been living in Savannah since February and have been wanting to find a local bookstore to support - definitely found it with E Shaver Bookseller. First of all, there are cats in this bookstore lounging all around, which makes a bookstore extra cozy in my opinion. Second, they have book clubs that meet monthly and each room is organized by genre. They also have the option to do a blind date with a book, so you buy a book based on the description not based on the cover or the title. They have so many titles to choose from. If you live in Savannah make sure to join their frequent buyer program, and shop local!
google avatar

Yelp
Visited E Shaver on my first trip to Savannah. Staff was friendly and selection was great! Interesting building with narrow aisles and rooms that are little off-shoots. In beautiful area of the city. Loved it!

Yelp
I. Love. This. Place!!!! We came for the books and stayed for the cats . This independent book store is very well stocked with a wide variety of genres, some great bookish gifts, and journals. And as a bonus, there are not one, not two, but three shop cats!!!! This will be a stop on every Savannah trip

Destiny P.

Yelp
Found this place on tik tok while looking for stuff to do on my mini honeymoon, & of course being an avid reader I had to come!! The location was only a 10 min walk from our airbnb & walking in I immediately fell in love!! Such a cute little space! So many books, so many genres to choose from! Merch available to buy, some cute stickers & different knick knacks! my favorite area was the typewriter space where you could sit down at a chair & actually type of the machine & then post it up somewhere around the room! I mean HOW COOL!!! cutie cats walking around is always a plus! I could spend all day here! the books seemed to be reasonably priced as well! Workers around to help if needed, definitely one of my favorite places we visited!

Yelp
While traipsing around Savannah during a thunderstorm, we decided to dry off for a bit and check out E Shaver bookseller. I am so glad we did! It was worth the thunderstorm experience! This bookstore has all sorts of fun rooms to get lost in that twist and turn out every corner. The building is quite old which makes it even more charming and more of a reason I love this bookstore! It's a perfect fit for this quaint town. Since it is an independent bookstore it has a huge selection of books. I could've probably spent many hours in there just looking at all the different books however we wanted to see the town regardless of the thunderstorm so we only stopped in for about 25 to 30 minutes and even that was not enough time to take a look at this bookstore. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and my kids enjoyed petting the cats that they had in various parts of the bookstore. Whenever I get another chance to come to Savannah I will certainly come back here and buy a couple more books. Even though we're at a time where it seems like bookstores are a thing of the past with digital books I highly value and support bookstores that are this good!
google avatar

Lauren K.

Yelp
Every town and city needs a wonderful independent bookstore. Savannah has several and E Shaver is at the top of the list. It's in the historic downtown area and should be part of all trips to Savannah, IMHO. I highly recommend popping in soon and support this fantastic store. The store is well organized and perfectly laid out. It's a fantastic experience shopping here. I picked up a Rachel Maddow book on a recent visit in the political section. I eyed the signed Stacey Abrams amongst other items but I'm only permitted one book a week by my own rules. They have lots of new books, bestsellers and budget friendly paperbacks on a variety of topics. The staff are friendly and helpful. There is no public bathroom. Everyone kept asking. See website for hours and location.

D H.

Yelp
Such a unique bookstore with absolutely EVERYTHING you could possibly want! Little nooks here and there full of books and gifts!
google avatar

Debbie B.

Yelp
A fantastic gem located in Savannah. It appears they sell newer books but the setup is wonderful. It's like a labyrinth of books but you don't mind if you hit a dead end. Just turn around and keep on exploring. The staff was friendly and I absolutely loved the typewriter corner where you could leave a little message. We got a couple of books for the plane ride home and we were very happy with the selection they offered.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
So I am pretty conservative in all my views.. E Shaver Bookseller is pretty much the other side of the aisle so to speak...but even with that It is such an awesome book store. Amazing Cook books. Great special interest books. I did not find Laptop from Hell though ( gee go figure ). Pro Tip go look for the 4 amazing kittys named after famous writers within the store. One of the Great Bookstores in the US! In the realm of Powells etc.
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
Yes!! Ok, if you are allergic to cats, then NO. But otherwise this is exactly the type of Bookstore I love to browse. There is a huge kids section, a small comic/manga section, a fun puzzle solving section, and tons of well organized books with a little bit of everything: cooking, history, paranormal, botany, non-fiction, YA, and much more. Oh, and the sweetest cats. But definitely not a place for those with allergies. We also visited the Book Lady, and I reviewed it separately. Not our cup of tea. This one was definitely better IOO.
google avatar

Marleigh B.

Yelp
Cats, books, gifts, art, vibes, rugs, cozy, old building, good music, smells good... I want to live here.

Scott B.

Yelp
What an adorable bookstore! The shop has so many rooms and a ton of real, paper books. It's delightful.

Linda W.

Yelp
Great selection. Fun book store well organized and friendly staff. Got my book ordered and looked around. Kitties must have been sleeping maybe next time
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Do you love cats? Do you love books? Do you like exploring little old buildings? If you love any of those things you'll really enjoy E Shaver Bookseller. This old building boasts books in every nook and cranny. Keep an eye out for cats as there are two that live there!
google avatar

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
This bookstore was adorable!!! I completely recommend if you are any type of animal lover as well as book lover! There are four cats that live in store and it makes the experience 10x better. Also, the aesthetics and shelves are on point. It is such a welcoming and comfortable shop. The employees were all very kind as well!
google avatar

Sophie A.

Yelp
Such a beautiful bookstore in Savannah! We went there twice in one day just because it was so lovely. There are three cats roaming around and they are the sweetest. Staff was very helpful and friendly, spending the time to help customers find what they need. Will absolutely be coming back the next time I'm in Savannah!
google avatar

Sara P.

Yelp
Books and cats. Need I say more? I absolutely knew I had to stop by when I saw E Shaver Bookseller on yelp and had it bookmarked. I am so glad I went because it's such a cute experience to shop around and pet such beautiful cats. I loved being able to support local and even supporting the local artists who had their art sold there too! I got such a cute post card, Moleskin journal as well as a books of course! They had such a selection and the bookstore itself was a pretty decent size! Definitely bigger than I imagined. If you're in the area, E Shaver Is a MUST!
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Got a gift card for my friend who is local in Savannah, GA. They shipped it to me and I was able to send it along with her birthday card. Excellent service!
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
E Shaver is your quintessential, classic bookstore...the kind you can spend a whole afternoon in, just browsing. On top of its wonderful selection, ambience and staff, they have CATS in the store. CATS!!!! During my last visit, there was only one copy left of a particular book I wanted and its edges/corners were damaged. A staff member informed me that one of the cats has a penchant for chewing books, apologized, and offered me a discount due to the cat damage. I consider this cat damage to be a major value-add, and I happily bought the book (after taking a picture of the guilty cat next to the book for a souvenir bookmark). E Shaver, along with The Tea Room and House of Strut, are my favorite local businesses in Savannah and no trip to Savannah is ever complete without stopping by all three at least once. Sometimes more than once.
google avatar

Samantha K.

Yelp
Very cool local bookstore!! I had such a great time browsing through, they have so many rooms and places to explore, I love when a bookstore feels like it's own adventure! The employees were really personable and willing to help find what you're looking for if you're not in the mood to hunt or you need recommendations. Plus they've got two (maybe more? I saw two) incredibly sweet cats who just hang out and ate happy to receive attention.
google avatar

Audrey P.

Yelp
Every time I visit Savannah, I stop here. It is one of the best indie bookstores in the US! This was my first time introducing my 13 yo to it who is an AVID reader and serious book lover. He asked if he was dreaming when we walked in. When he came to (kidding, of course), he went straight to one of the booksellers and asked about mangas. They were so incredibly helpful and expressed interest in the same series. My 13 yo then asked if they would mind sitting with him and discussing the series, to which the bookseller happily obliged and spent 20 minutes talking books, story arcs, characters, and books-turned-movies/shows. That in and of itself made it one of my most memorable bookstore moments ever.
google avatar

Timothy A.

Yelp
I love local bookstores. I really like cats. Cats in local bookstores is more than enough reason to walk in here and hang out for a while. To anyone who has never owned a cat before ... they can be @$$h0!e$ from time to time. Pet at your discretion, but if they start to give you that side eye, back away slowly. This bookstore had so many different rooms. I loved going into each one and exploring. One room even had a ty-purrr-iter for people to randomly type things on to get a feeling of what it felt like to do so before computers. One cat was guarding it like a sphynx, so I stayed away. Ended up walking away (after paying) with a handful of books and a scratch on one hand. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
First of all excellent service, 2nd of all LOVE LOVE the layout of this independent bookstore located in a historic dwelling. The fact that the tea room is also located here is just another added bonus! They have a wall of books with recommendations from the staff, I personally always love when a bookstore does this. Adds a personal touch to the experience. Also loved their music (no surprise here right? LOL) YA was current as well as having some books that have been out a while now but are 'must-reads' same goes for the general fiction. If you are a #bibliophile you simply must darken these doorsteps. Respectfully Reviewed

Crystal B.

Yelp
Super cute bookstore with even cuter kitties. Had a good selection and friendly staff
google avatar

Blair C.

Yelp
There is a reason this place has perfect reviews. It seriously makes you want to own a bookstore. Cats... lots of beautiful fluffy cats, what more could you ask for? This place has all of the books and other accessories that you might need to read enjoyably. We of course couldn't leave without merchandise. This place is everything that you could ask for and more. Do yourself a favor and stop by!

G G.

Yelp
This place is so cute. They have cute cats as soon as you come in. The store has so many cool rooms full of all kinds of bookish things. I will definitely be back every time I am in Savannah. Such a fun place.

Stacey V.

Yelp
What a cozy, lovely gem! The archetype of a local, independent bookshop. Not for folks with cat allergies, but y'know, the store is so charming, it might be worth a little sneezing and discomfort. Spend all your time and money there - and leave with warm and fuzzy feelings and memories and lots of wonderful books.
google avatar

Gabriel K.

Yelp
Great Indie bookstore. Ordered some books off their website and they let me know when they were available for pickup.
google avatar

Anastasia W.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVED this bookstore!!! I wasn't expecting it to be this big! They had so many new books and so many many selections!! The owner was there and we talked all about the store and the history of the store. Also the best thing is the cat in the bookstore! What makes this place really cool is they have more than just books also they have local items such as Savannah bags etc.
google avatar

Zack H.

Yelp
Great selection of local SE USA books. Helpful staff and prompt shipping. Cats were cute.

Yelp
We were looking for a place to find some local books, and E Shaver delivered above and beyond. We found not only the books we were looking for, but great conversation with other book lovers, a knowledgeable staff, and kitties
google avatar

Cheryl R.

Yelp
This is the coolest little book shop around ! Great collection of new books and speciality books . Nice selection of Graphic novels. Could spend all day in here , you are sure to find something great to read here . The book shop is opened up to a little tea place , which could use more seating . And two fluffy friendly kitties !! Great atmosphere!

Yelp
Oh, what a wonderful bookstore! I would say this would have to be one of my favorite privately owned bookstores now. I LOVE how they have multiple cats! My daughter loved this too. We found 3 of the 4 cats. It was like a scavenger hunt. The bookstore is incredibly charming. I could have spent HOURS here. There are different rooms for different genres plus rooms for non-book items, such as journals and puzzles and BOOKISH candles! I love bookish candles!! The ladies that were working there were very kind and helpful. I will not be able to visit Savannah without coming to this wonderful bookstore!
