First off I would like to express how great the food and service was. My family and I dined at "Beck's" on Saturday March 9th for lunch, we had plans on going to Ellicott city, however we stumbled upon E.W. Beck's 's while searching on Google and judging by the reviews we wanted to check the restaurant out. We also wanted to try a few of the dishes we saw on line. Fast forward upon arrival we were a bit, speculate about the area, we haven't been to the area before, so we were also looking for representation. When we first arrived the host was great, we were sat immediately. I was looking around the restaurant just to see if we saw anyone that looked like us, and lord behold we saw a beautiful African American server walked by, we were very happy to see her, she looked at us(we were not her table) and with the most sincere smile she said "hello" to us. Were felt right at home. There was an disturbing incident I observed, while sitting at the table, I saw the same African American employee at the computer, I saw a white older lady come by the computer next to the employee and gave her a nasty look and then put her shirt over her nose!!! I was SHOCKED, I had to turn to my two daughters, one being an adult, my other daughter in her teens, and asked them both to observe exactly what I was observing just to make sure I wasn't losing my marbles. And also the lawyer in me wanted to look further into this so on purpose I kept my eye on the African-American employee, and also look to see if this older white employee was doing it to anyone else. We stayed at the restaurant for quite some time and after observing this woman, I realize she was only doing it to this beautiful African-American young girl. There was a moment where there was a gentleman walking around I'm assuming he was the manager asking was everything OK, we said all was okay, but I really wanted to ask him. Did he ask his employee was she OK? Because as it seems it was obvious, there was some tension with that woman towards this black employee. Later on, I saw the same employee joking with this manager by the computer, as the African-American employee walked by, the lawyer in me wanted to stop her so badly and give her my card. I was so disturbed by what I saw , we left after eating. I wanted to stop her a few times while she was walking by just to speak with her and ask her was she OK and how was she doing but she was very busy. Sad to say we will not be returning to this restaurant I've never written a review before my daughters usually do but after talking about this situation I seen since Saturday I couldn't let it go , I'm hoping this young lady sees this review and find her worth and leave that place, as we were looking at her she looked as if something was bothering her. Do better Management, as a African American women with black daughters seeing this behavior, and having parents and grandparents during the Jim Crow era in the south this really hit home.
We would be returning.
