On the Grid : Kaleidoscope

"Small toy stores are just about extinct. This is one reason Kaleidoscope is enjoyable place to visit. With charm that isn't possible to exude at large toy stores, Kaleidoscope has general themes and toys as well as those specific to Brooklyn. Enjoyable to browse for all ages, Kaleidoscope has at least one thing that will appeal to you. Staff have a pleasant demeanor and a trustworthy quality as they offer free movies for children every Friday night." - the serif design

We love Kaleidoscope! My daughter is currently in the threes program, and we are thrilled that she will be staying for UPK next year. Her teachers have been wonderful, communicative, understanding and kind all year, and our daughter looks forward to seeing them every day. The space is clean and welcoming and everyone there seems to genuinely enjoy the company of children. They provide nutritious meals and snacks every day, which is a great convenience for us. Not to mention, our daughter is much more willing to try new foods when they are served in school, so she is really expanding her food preferences. In terms of education, the teachers here really understand how kids learn and how to make learning fun. Our greatest wish for our daughter is that her early school experience be about learning how to enjoy the process of learning and discovery. That is exactly what has happened this year, and we are so grateful to have found this special school!

My son attended Universal PreK at Kaleidoscope and my daughter is now in the 3's program. We looked at many schools in the area and were immediately drawn to Kaleidoscope - the huge, beautiful classrooms, the large and safe outdoor space, and the wonderful meals that are made every day for the kids all make Kaleidoscope stand out from the rest. The teachers are warm and loving and my daughter talks about them constantly. She's thrived at the school and I'm so glad we have the opportunity to stay through PreK! They are also very flexible with after school and if you need it from time to time, they are accommodating, which many places will not do. The enrichment programs (optional) after school are also a great offering. I feel lucky that we have this resource in our neighborhood!

We have put three children (the third is there now) through Kaleidoscope and we cannot say enough great things about the school. They are smart, caring and supportive owners/teachers who always put the children's happiness and safety first. They work hard to provide well rounded education, and our older two children both thrived in primary school after leaving Kaleidoscope and did well on the NYC G&T exam. Our youngest is still there and could not happier. They prepare fresh and nutritious food everyday for the students, and have an onsite playground and go to the park. This is an excellent option for families in the area.

We have the best experience with Kaleidoscope. Our teacher is amazing. I love that sugar treats are not welcome. The food is healthy and fresh- important for us. If you have a chance to be a student of Kaleidoscope - you are lucky!

My daughter attended Kaleidoscope for the 2s program, is now in the 3s program and will stay for pre-K next year. After starting out in another program that was not a great fit for us, I can't recommend Kaleidoscope enough. The curriculum is exploratory and play-based, while teaching basics like numeracy and literacy. The class sizes are just right for the age groups and the teachers are caring and fun. I especially appreciate the flexibility offered by the after school program -- it's there when you need it, but you are not tied to it when you don't. Ample, healthy meals and snacks are provided daily, which really boosts our morning routine. My daughter is so happy here, and we hope my newborn will attend when she is of age.

In the last ten years, I have always seen my parents (Oksana and Pasha, the directors of Kaleidoscope and also the best parents anyone could ask for) working hard every day of the week perfecting their school so everyone would feel invited and warm. Every day, there is delicious warm and fresh food prepared and there are always extras if anyone (including teachers and students) wants any. Any time I come in, the kids are having a great time and a lot of the times, they don’t want to leave! The staff are friendly and many graduates often stop by to say hi and give hugs. I am proud of my parents and the service they provide for our communities.

My daughter enrolled in the 3s program at Kaleidoscope and is now in their UPK program; my son is currently in their 2s program and I hope he can stay through UPK. I am so happy with our experience at Kaleidoscope. My daughter's interests in reading, writing, art, drama, and science have all been nurtured by Kaleidoscope's play-based pedagogy and wonderful array of enrichment programs. My son adores his teachers, classmates, and classroom, and is reluctant to leave at the end of the day! Their outdoor play space is one of the best I've seen in this neck of Brooklyn, and the older kids get to Prospect Park a fair bit as well—physical exercise and outdoor time is a big priority at Kaleidoscope, which is fantastic for the kids. Nutritious meals and snacks are prepared and served on-site, which has done so much to simplify our family's daily routine. The teachers are warm and enthusiastic, and do all they can to show the kids that their ideas, words, and actions matter. And as another commenter noted, their after-school program is admirably flexible in its design. The school is also growing a new lending library, which has been exciting to watch take shape. I wholeheartedly recommend Kaleidoscope for any family looking for a 2s, 3s, or Pre-K program.

After having our boys in four other day cares (two good, two bad), we were so grateful to find Kaleidoscope. My older son went there for Pre-K and my younger son started in the 2s program and is now in the 3s and will go there for Pre-K. We always feel 100% confident leaving our kids in their care, as the school has created a warm, loving, and safe environment. The kids get warm food every day and lots of time outside, in addition to thoughtful and age-appropriate learning activities and arts, while also giving kids plenty of time to explore through play. The 3s class currently has a music teacher and french teacher who come in once a week, and each class has a monthly family day where parents can come to the class for 45 minutes and do an activity with their kids and the teacher. Teachers have regular conferences with parents and I have always found Ms. Oksana and Mr. Pasha to be very responsive to parents' concerns. We like that the place is run by a family, as you can feel that when you walk in. I recommend it to anyone in the area!

Yelp
I'll be as honest as I can. Our son went to Kaleidoscope and we were very underwhelmed, again I'm being generous. While the owners are very nice and charming and approachable the education program falls short in many ways. Our child is a bright, capable and a sweet kid but is lacking social skills, structure and experience with bigger groups not in a bad way but in a 4 year old way. They simply are not equipped to nurture the child's development and in our opinion actually because of the business first style approach actually hold back development. I think if the child is socialized and coming from a bigger family then the child would do fine there but if not it could be a struggle. However positive things include the facility is super clean, very secure and the food menu is pretty good however I n retrospect we would have placed our child directly in the pre-k program for his zoned public school.
