How to Get Around Central America on a Budget in 2025

"Having my own vehicle saves time and gives flexibility to stop wherever I want, and rental prices have come down so driving can be affordable when shared; however, many rental companies forbid crossing borders, roads can be in poor condition, and driving rules are sometimes loose, so I make sure I’m a confident driver, avoid driving at night, never leave valuables in the car, and use Discover Cars to find the best rental deals." - Matthew Kepnes

BE AWARE!!! They WILL look for any way possible to charge you Extra Fees! Stay Away! You are better off! Trust me!!! They first start a “friendly conversation”, so you think! It’s actually an INTERROGATION!!! Choose your words carefully, because they will use it against you as an excuse to Charge You Extra Fees!!! Planning to drive to the Grand Canyon? EXTRA FEE! ($25 a DAY!!! Because you are driving outside of Nevada) Don’t have a Flight Reservation? Don’t worry, you will be Charged an EXTRA FEE! (You are considered a Local) Insurance? Full coverage? Good? Show them your Insurance card. Oh no, not good enough. Can’t pull up all the details of your insurance? Don’t worry! You have to buy their insurance for an EXTRA FEE!!! Imagine how much your Rental will cost you at the end of the Day!!! Do Yourself a Favor and STAY AWAY from this Place!!!

I WISH I had read these reviews before renting! DO NOT RENT FROM THEM! My flight was delayed so I tried getting ahold of them before my flight. I connected through their chat function and was told they would only hold my reservation for 2 hours past the pickup time. I asked to change the pick up time and they said I couldn’t because it was booked through Expedia and I need to talk to them. I decided to call Easirent to actually talk to someone. I waited on the phone for 25 min before someone picked up. They told me they would only hold the reservation for 1 hour and that they couldn’t change the pickup time and to contact Expedia. I reached out to Expedia and they said they couldn’t change the reservation and tried to call Easirent. They sat on hold twice and no one picked up. So I decided to chance it. After landing and taking 2 different shuttles I finally get to the rental location. IT’S VERY SHADY! There were 4 people in line and it took over an hour. (They have 90’’s R&B playing loudly while you wait) I finally get to the counter and they forced me to pay $120 for insurance. Told me I could not leave with a car without buying their insurance. Fine, I paid. This was in addition to their $250 deposit. The entire process was very archaic. SO DATED! They kept giving me things to sign but not time to read any of it. Then they emailed me all the documents but I have yet to receive it. The whole process took FOREVER. Then they told me they had a car but it wasn’t clean yet so I had to wait for that too. (It was still dirty when I got it.) From when I walked in the place to when I left was about 2 hours. I have no idea what the return process is going to be like but hoping they don’t cause me to miss my flight! I don’t know how this place is still doing business.

There was nothing easy or affordable about renting from this place! I DO NOT recommend it! It looked sketchy when I walked in. I waited in line for almost an hour, there were only two ppl working. The gas tank was not full, but the contract clearly required me to return it on full. The car was not checked for routine maintenance; tire pressure was low and it ran out of oil during my trip, it only had 8% oil life remaining with two more days left of my rental. Customer service told me to "take it to a mechanic" then hung up on me, after saying they would transfer me to the branch. Two calls later another rep tells me she has to reach out to branch mgr to get approval for them to reimburse me for the purchase of the oil and will have to call me back. When I returned the vehicle I waited in line for an hour to submit a reimbursement claim just for them to tell me "their servers were down". I had to leave my receipt and hope they submit the claim. My confirmation said I was supposed to pay $399 at the counter and they charged me all kinds of additional fees, I ended up paying 687 bucks for this rental. I would have received better service at a better rate from a rental place at the airport.

I like others wish I had read the previous reviews. This is a 0 star for me. Arrived and was number 3 in line it took 2 hours from my vacation time to get out of there. Never in life have I waited this close in line and watched their personnel do everything but care for their customers. They had ONE person actually working to get customers taken care of. I was called to the counter by an elderly woman and waited while this Representative did what she eventually called "side work" then instead of getting me taken care of she rushed to take a FedEx envelope and keep me waiting longer. She then called someone else while I pulled up my insurance because I declined their insurance. By the time she got me started the couple that was behind me, being taken care of by the ONE decent working rep lady, were done and gone and she was on to the next. There was no reason anyone should wait 2hrs to be taken care of with incapable people at the counter who care nothing about the customers time. The car was nasty inside and the seats looked like they've never been cleaned. I will never recommend this location. They are miles from the rental car lot and you have to take a shuttle to get them from the car rental location. The cost was low but the crap customer service isn't worth it while you're trying to enjoy the start of your vacation. Spend the extra money and use a valid rental service. Worst rental car experience ever in my years of renting.

I highly recommend paying more for a quality car and experience. We arrived and waited 3 hours to see the 1 employee that was working while the others enjoyed smoke breaks. Once we got to the counter we were pressured into buying the windshield and tire insurance or we'd be liable. They pocket the $250 deposit and charge the customer the price for the replacement. The deposit doesn't go toward the expense at all. No one went out to the car with us to verify existing damages. Instead we were asked to take a video and on return there was a person inspecting the vehicle documenting damage without any prior knowledge of what was there before we accepted the car. During the trip the car was prone to stalling and had trouble accelerating. The entire front end of the car was loose and felt like it was falling apart. The entire experience was regrettable and I have no doubt they'll find some BS reason to keep my deposit.

It is unbelievable that this place has four stars. It should have half a star. It took us an hour to get to Easirent from the airport after taking two shuttles and then we waited an hour and a half to get a rental vehicle that being said the staff is amazing And once we talked with the staff, they were very pleasant and kind however, we had the vehicle and noticed that the tires were nearly bald is when I started getting concerned while backing out of the driveway, the sidewall of the bald tire ripped open easy rents policy is to call them when an accident occurred. We called their 24/7 emergency line and learned that it was in fact not a 24 seven emergency line but a 7 to 11 emergency line at seven in the morning. We were able to get a hold of someone. We spoke to us like we were idiots and asked why we didn’t change the tire and fix it ourselves when we told them that it was unfixable due to the sidewall they relented and told us to take it back to the rental store when we arrive there again the staff was helpful and pleasant and told us that we could take it to a used tire shop and get it replaced as that’s what they do for all of their Carsfor the rest of the trip. I was afraid that we were again going to have to replace a tire for them as most of the tires were bald and passed replacement time. I will never rent again from easy rent.

The process to getting the car and bringing the car back was extremely easy. Eric was very accommodating with checking in with me. He was very patient kind and made me very comfortable with knowing that I was getting a safe vehicle to enjoy my Las Vegas trip. Rob Also made the process of checking in extremely easy. We walked around and inspected the car, sign the papers we were on our way. The shuttle pulled up. We were out and it was a quick and smooth process. I will be back renting with Easirent every visit from Vegas.

Edit: Good customer service experience, they return my deposit right away without issues. I still wish they would wipe down the car before we use it. They should also check the air pressure and the tire quality before letting new people use it. And also give us clear summary of what we will pay when booking online. Such as out of state fee and deposit. There were hidden fee like insurance (if yours doesn't cover collisions) and deposit up to 250 dollars for rental. I order my booking through economy booking. Insurance by itself is 242 for three days. I already spent 167 just to book the car. Total is around 600 just for three days rent. If you choose this service, prepare to be let down and feeling disappointed before your trip begins. Not only did they not clean the car from the previous renter, they gave me the wrong car. They also didn't check the tire pressure. I had to stop by a gas station to add the tire pressure myself. These people really dgaf about your safety. And I am still waiting for that receipt that I paid for deposit and insurance. They say I will get it through the email in five or ten min. It has been two days as I am writing this review. I noticed the reasons this place has a 4 stars is because of all the bots and fake account leaving dishonest review. Just scroll down and you will noticed them right away.
