Beautiful views, full kitchen with ice maker in the fridge, loved having a balcony overlooking the lake! Electric fireplace added some nice ambiance (though of course not as nice as gas or wood), walkable to local stores and restaurants. Great coffee/tea/hot chocolate selection for the morning (my kiddo loved that there were fun shaped sprinkles to add, lol). We didn't have our dogs with us for this trip but love the fact that this place is dog friendly if we decide to come back! The place does seem to be a bit cheaply constructed, but the rooms look very nice and that isn't a problem for an overnight stay/short term rental.

We had a great stay at the East Bay Suites. Perfect location, right in downtown Grand Marais and on the water with lovely views of the lake. The rooms were large and comfortable with fantastic amenities. Everything worked great. Staff were friendly and helpful. Ample parking. Loved the lobby as well, and the fresh popcorn, hot chocolate, coffee and snacks were great. We will definitely be staying here again during our next trip to Grand Marais.

If you're traveling to Grand Marais, this is a great place to stay. Our room overlooked Lake Superior and was immaculately clean and quiet. The bathroom was luxurious. |There is plenty of free parking and the staff was super helpful. I wish I could have stayed longer. Highly recommended!

The accommodations were fantastic! We went hoping to see Northern lights, and this did not disappoint. The windows were fabulous! Clean and huge! They looked out over lake Superior and was a fantastic view. We thoroughly enjoyed the accommodations, we could fix food. We could do our laundry. It was quiet and private. Very, very enjoyable and comfortable experience!

Google
Great location and clean! There are 3 floors in the facility. We would never stay again on anything but the top floor (we stayed on the first, ground floor). The ceilings/floors are paper thin and you hear every normal step of someone above you, it is incredibly noisy.

Google
The room was comfortable and the view was wonderful. We watched the sailboats and the moonrise. Everything was clean and well appointed. Only complaint, there was a small bedroom and a Murphy bed in the livingroom. Both were comfortable, but the bedroom got stuffy at night with the door closed.

This hotel is in one of the best locations in Grand Marais, and we always enjoy staying there. This time, however, was less satisfying, as we ended up in a "pet-friendly" room without knowing it, and my wife had to deal with allergies. We were moved to another room and assured that no pets had been there, and the allergies became worse. And then we discovered pet feeding/watering dishes in the closet.

Great location -right in town and right on the beach! Full functional kitchen is lovely for those who prefer not to dine at restaurants. Stove, dishwasher, and full sized fridge were super nice for my celiac hubby who has limited options at restaurants. Close walk to the food coop for groceries!

Yelp
My husband and I went for a long weekend right as leaf peeping season was ending. You really can't beat the sun rise over Lake Superior right there as you wake up. They have a cute little coffee/tea/cocoa bar and a cozy lounge with a fireplace to enjoy it in. The location is walkable to dozens of restaurants , shops, and galleries. My only qualm with our stay was that the bed was probably the firmest thing I have ever slept on and for the first time in my life I woke up with back pain.

Yelp
Each suite has an owner. Some suites are nice, others not so much. They are all very loud and the staff does nothing to enforce the 10:00pm to 8:00am quiet time. Our first night we had to listen to people on the bottom floor patio until well past midnight. Another night there was a party in the room above us going well past midnight. One day, the couple below us left their dog in the room alone all day and it whimpered and barked the entire time. Kids randomly run through the halls. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, excluding the mgr, but they could only do something about the noise after the fact. Lots of dogs and don't count on the other guests to be considerate. Considering the price of the rooms, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

Yelp
I've loved visiting this place over the years with my family but ran into a new difficulty last year. I was organizing a holiday getaway for a special needs group and knew that mask mandates would be an issue for some if not all of the people in the group so I called and spoke with the manager, explaining the difficulties with this specific group and asked if there was a way to accommodate this need, unfortunately they would not so we had to find someplace to stay. It is very nice and the people are friendly, but you have to be EXPLICIT in your room requests. It hasn't ever been a huge problem but make sure that you get any room requests in writing, they have a tendency to only fill town-side, second level units so if you want a walkout lakeside unit, make sure you know that they know that that's what you're requesting.

Yelp
I was selling books at the annual Fisherman's Picnic. It turns out my hotel is on the same street, so parking and walking were no problem. It's also steps away from the World's Greatest Doughnuts. The management is wonderful. They deal with problems right away. I got a 10% discount for booking for next year. I booked late so I was able to get a room with a Murphy bed. The breeze and sound of the lake, which sound like ocean waves is beautiful at night. You get a great view from almost every room.

Yelp
Pretty spendy but worthwhile. Great location right on the lake and plenty of heat (though again, no AC up here). Bummed that the fireplace didn't work though I'm sure they could have fixed it if we stayed for more than one night. We had a two-room suite with kitchenette and sitting area/living room. I enjoyed the balcony also where we could sit for breakfast and look out over the water while watching the sun rise. Obviously you can walk anywhere in town (from anywhere, not just here) but this is a nice base of operations. There are other perks of staying that you can enjoy - the beach area, campfires, free smores, the game room, loaner DVDs, etc. It almost seemed more like a vacation rental than a hotel and I'd definitely stay again.

Yelp
We decided to stay here for my birthday weekend. We arrived late in the evening and checked in but honestly didn't feel very welcome. I work at a hotel and have been in the Hospitality industry for 10 years+ and it could have been a much better arrival. The Front Dest agent seemed preoccupied in the phone but it definitely was a personal call. She never asked for ID and didn't know the area to well either. We got our keys and walked up to our 2 bedroom suite (302) and it was nice and clean but nothing overwhelming. Each room had a king bed but the room with the lake view does not have a bathroom attached to the room which isn't terrible but not that convenient. The living area was nice and the patio was really special and view was amazing. We stayed two night and our coffee machine wasn't very good and made the coffee taster extremely bitter. The fire place also was very low and didn't keep the room/living room warm. We told Front Desk but nothing was done. Overall it was nice and was worth it considering we booked a special rate but not sure if I had paid the full rate I would have given 3 stars I would stay here again if there was a special but nothing to really talk about aside from the view of the lake. And customer service could have been better no doubt, it really makes all the difference.

Yelp
It's a great location. It's like a little apartment right on the lakefront. There were some items that were in the apartment that did not work which was the only downside. Like for instance our stovetop did not work. Other than that it is a decent place to check out.

Yelp
Pros: -Fantastic views of the lake (for lakeview rooms anyway) -Ample kitchen space with good basics for cooking, although I just made guacamole and opened up beers -Radiant floor heating -Dog-friendly -Nice lobby area and exterior -Very nice management Cons: -Spendy for a rehabbed Comfort Inn-type of place -The hallways are very old-school and motel-like, totally incongruous with the rooms -The bathroom remodel seemed like an afterthought after all of the nice touches in the rest of the room -I was so geeked to find a two-sided fireplace (facing into both the bedroom and into the living room), but the damn thing didn't kick out any heat whatsoever and wasn't at all cozy.

Sarah S.

Yelp
I booked one night here for a work trip. I saw the hotel on previous personal trip to Grand Marais and thought the location was perfect and made a point to check it out. Check in was quick and easy and the room was clean and cozy. Tons of natural light on the corner unit and floor heating was definitely appreciated for the winter chill. I would unfortunately never stay in the room I was in again. The wind picked up quite a bit during the evening and there must have been a loose rail on the balcony because it rattled and slammed all night. I even ran out there in the middle of the night in -24 wind chill to see if it was possibly the metal furniture hitting against each other. No luck - it was definitely the loose rail. That was unfortunately the demise of any sleep I was hoping to get before work meetings in the morning and a long drive home. There is no way the rooms around us didn't hear it - It was THAT loud. We mentioned it at checkout and the response was "they know and there isn't much they can do about it." Considering it was impossible to sleep through the noise, I don't know why that room is still being offered until they figure something out. Ironically, everything about this place besides not being able to sleep was enjoyable. I would consider going back but not with a balcony unit since they are aware of the issue and still book that room.

Yelp
This hotel offers beautiful suites with amazing views. We had a 2 bedroom 2 bath suite which was equipped with absolutely everything needed. The kitchen was extremely well furnished including a blender, food processor, even a micro plane and meat thermometer! Wake up to beautiful sunrises and enjoy wonderful quiet evenings. The hotel is strict about noise after 10 so you can really enjoy the natural beauty of the location.

Yelp
Nice but overpriced. Great location-- right on the shore, facing East to Lake Superior. Across the street you have Drury Lane Books next to World's Best Donuts, so your breakfast is steps away. Across a parking lot is the Cook County Co-op, so if you prefer to cook in your room's kitchenette (and you can!) then ingredients are easy to get. My partner and I booked a studio here about a year or two ago. It was really very nice. We enjoyed the view, and we enjoyed being able to cook in the room. It took a bit before we got the murphy bed figured out, but that was fine eventually. And even in the studio rooms there's a tiny gas fireplace. The downside is that you pay through the nose for all of that fabulousness. During the summer, a studio that doesn't even face the water is $129 per night. They do have a website with lots of pictures and details: http://www.eastbaysuites.com/ I guess I'd say, if you come to Grand Marais for your honeymoon or your anniversary and want to wow your partner with the room, here's a place to do it. But if you're simply on vacation and want a spot to crash at night, there are other less expensive places available.

Yelp
I. Love. It. Here. Worth ever penny! Rooms are right next to the lake! Waking up with the sunrise bursting into your room is breath taking. It feels just like home with your own kitchen and separate bedroom. The kitchen has everything you could ever possibly need to make a meal. They thought of everything! There's yummy popcorn in the lobby on the weekends and apple cider/hot chocolate packets for you to make. Arts and crafts in case you just wanna stay in and enjoy the fireplace. They offer a free video library with tons of options. The staff has always been warm and friendly. Some rooms even allow pets so you can take your dog. These rooms are just as great and the views are just as beautiful as the non-pet rooms. There are restaurants and shops down the street well within walking distance. I love this place year-round. Again, worth every penny.

Yelp
What a delightful little hotel! We enjoyed our 3 night stay at East Bay so much! We had a 2 bedroom suite on the 3rd floor with a full kitchen. It was nicely decorated, very spacious, and immaculate. We loved the faux fireplaces in the living and bedroom and beautiful views of Lake Superior. Each night we fell asleep listening to the waves. They had popcorn and cocoa each weekend night too, which I thought was a nice touch. Also, they had two tickets for 2 complementary beers at Voyager - what a great way to be welcomed to Grand Marais!

Yelp
Stayed here twice now and can't think of a single reason to venture out and try a different lodging option. This place is it, and I'll leave it at that! It's in your best interest to book a room here and see for yourself

Kris J.

Yelp
Rooms have amazing lake views! We love the large living spaces... (We stay in the 1 bedroom suites)... So much better than just a hotel room. It's truly a home away from home with the fully stocked kitchen, comfortable living room, and separate bedroom. It's quiet with simple luxuries like the gas fireplace and heated floors plus the cozy community area. Staff are all very friendly and helpful. It's a bit pricey, but we think it's worth it. The balcony overlooking the lake and the sound of the waves rolling in is worth every penny! We love the personal details that each suite has like the artwork, books, and games and the beach with fire pit and all the firewood you need for your own bonfire and snores!

Yelp
As good as it gets is an understatement. We were so pleasantly surprised with our stay at EBS and would recommend them to anyone, ANYDAY. For a trip to Lutsen, we rented a Studio apartment which allowed us extremely great amenities from the in-room organic coffee/coffee maker, two burner stove, microwave and washer & dryer. The Co-Op next door was also a fantastic place to stock the fridge with healthy snacks, local eggs & sausage for fueling up in the am without having to spend extra for more meals out. Everyone at the hotel was very helpful, kind and genuine with thanking us for our stay. Couldn't say enough great things about this place! Will always check back to see if more open rooms are available for our next stay Up North. Thanks East Bay Suites!

Yelp
My wife and I decided to stay here over the Christmas holiday of 2014. When we checked in we were given a room that was clean and comfortable except for the rancid smell of leftover lutefisk. Thinking this was a short term problem we opened up all of the windows to air out the room. We left the hotel for holiday festivities for over 6 hours. We returned to the room that evening and unfortunately determined the smell had not dissipated. The next morning we awoke to the smell not only in the air but attached to everything we brought with us. We asked for and received a different room. When we were going through the booking process the very friendly people apologized about the condition of the room and said they only clean rooms that are scheduled to be rented the following evening....rather odd practice...growing up in a family that operated in this marketplace. We checked into our new room and went on our way. The next morning I went to use the shower and noticed mold growing in the shower. Having cleaned many showers in my life and knowing that mold like this takes months to form left an unpleasant feeling about the place we are staying...Let alone the garbage they stored in the hallways and exit area of the building piled up like cord wood... I was not happy. The price they charge for these rooms was the highest in not only the city but the county. When checking out after our three day stay they reduced our 675.00 bill excluding tax to 625.00... Fifty buck off great...."tanks for nuttin' Danny"...Caddyshack.....Don't get me wrong I like the staff, location, and the city. Best in the world, but the cleanliness and price are absurd. Stay elsewhere. We will not return. Not because of the price or the meager discount but rather the knowledge that they don't give a crap.

Lara M.

Yelp
I would definitely recommend this place to stay, a little bit spendy (thus the 4 stars) but wonderful location, right on the lake. The free smores, DVD library and board games are the little extras that make it great! The staff was more than helpful and they have all the hiking trail info you could need in a binder by the desk, easy to grab a map and go! They also provide all the menus for area restaurants up front by the desk as well, so helpful! You can walk to anything in town from here! The extra perk for me was yoga classes right on site! And did I mention they were free! Thank you for a wonderful vacation! Wish we could have stayed longer :)

lea l.

Yelp
I would echo the sentiments of the reviewers before me. Only 3 stars due to the price - we paid $235/night for a studio facing the lake between Christmas & New Years. Our room was exceptionally clean and comfortable.

Kate R.

Yelp
We have stayed twice now. Once as a couple and once with our kids and dog. Both have been wonderful experiences! They are welcoming and accommodating. The rooms are clean, in great shape, and right by the water. We stayed on the first floor both times, and I highly recommend that. It's so nice to walk out the deck door and watch the sunrise. We will always plan to stay at East Bay Suites when we head up north.

Meg M.

Yelp
Perfect location, well-designed rooms, comfortable setup (kitchen! living room! fire place!), and the perfect spot to watch a sunset or sunrise. Great little spot.

Jim T.

Yelp
We recently stayed at East Bay Suites in Grand Marais, MN. If you get a room overlooking Lake Superior chances are you will have a beautiful view of the lake with a rocky pine tree point on one side. The back side of the Inn is on the edge of downtown with shops and restaurants. When checking into our room we noted a tiny bedroom with a double bed that it was almost impossible to walk around. The other bedding option was a Murphy Bed which folded down in the sitting area. This arrangement might be OK for a modest price but this room was approximately $295 a night. When checking out of this place we had a strong feeling of being robbed. This pricing may be an indication of the market in Grand, Marais but if this is so we would not recommend this lodging or this city.

S. M.

Yelp
I thought the prices were very affordable, though we went on the off-season. $90 a night which we thought pretty nice. The room was beautiful, the view superb and the amenities generous and appreciated. I love the kitchenette in each room (we've stayed here more than once) as it saves a lot of money for those who don't want to eat out every meal. They have a gas grill for guests to use, too! They have a little fire pit area and offer a lot of things for guests to do: YMCA pass, bikes, yoga classes, etc. Highly recommend East Bay and we will visit again soon!

Jean T.

Yelp
We switched to this hotel when we ended up staying an unexpected additional night in Grand Marais. We were staying at the Best Western Superior which was surprisingly newly renovated and great. We decided to move to the East Bay Suites so we could have a fire place as we were in the midst of the polar vortex and we were not going outside in -33 base temperature! Unfortunately the unit we got had an electric-not gas-fireplace but it wasn't really producing heat, just blowing warm air out. We were really disappointed. However, the amenities at the hotel were great- the hotel was newly remodeled, we loved that we could play a wii dancing game ( I'd been wanting to try it for a while) and the fact that they had a movie and game collection was great, as well as a dedicated fitness room with free classes! The staff were excellent, the copies of maps of the area were so helpful, I loved this place other than the shitty fire place, just double check before you check in that you are getting what you expect out of certain amenities.
