East Indies Mansion

"The East Indies Mansion is a restored Peranakan hotel with 7 rooms (from $55 per night, including a hot breakfast and WiFi) and a location at the center of historic George Town. Domestic treasures of the city’s past, such as hand-hewn kitchen utensils, school desks, and ceramics decorate the two open-air courtyards. Although most rooms are ideal for two people, we love the duplex family suite, with two queen bed guestrooms connected by spiral staircase, access to a shared study, and a bathroom paved with Penang’s distinctively colorful tilework."

The atmosphere reflects old word charm, with an interesting collection of antiques. Rooms are well appointed, clean and comfortable. Bathroom was spacious with all amenities. Within walking distance of all tourist sites and restaurants.. good value for money on a quieter part of the centre. Staff were extremely helpful, courteous and professional.

East Indies Mansion is a beautiful heritage stay that captures the charm and character of old Penang. My friends and I had the opportunity to enjoy a two-night staycation in this lovely hotel and I was very impressed. The rooms are clean, spacious, and cozy but most of all they truly feel like home. The only complain we have is the beds, when turning it makes some squeaky noises. Other than that it’s good. The interior is tastefully decorated with Peranakan touches and antique furniture that add warmth and nostalgia to the space. What stood out to us were the thoughtful little touches throughout our stay. Every day, we were treated to a selection of traditional local snacks, and we each received a lovely batik hand fan and a small pouch of spices as souvenirs. I received cloves and my friend received nutmeg. Such a charming and meaningful gesture. The location is excellent as it is within walking distance of many of Georgetown’s attractions and well-known local food spots. We met the manager, Ai Tee, on our check out day, she greeted us friendly & warmly. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience in Penang.

We wanted to get an authentic Georgetown experience. We were expecting a lively, busy place with lots of history, cultures and food. So, we thought the best way is to stay at an hotel in the middle of this historical city. |We were right, this is the best way to get to know Georgetown and Penang Island. The nice places are all reachable within 15 min by foot. The hotel is a fully restored original townhouse, with an eye for authentic details, story-telling objects and spacious rooms. With 2 small courtyards and many places to sit outside a true oasis in this very intense city. |The staff was very friendly & helpful, the rooms well-equipped and very clean and the general atmosphere of the hotel makes the experience perfect!

Above all else the staff are all fantastic. Very warm and couldn’t have been more helpful. The hotel itself is just on the edge of the bustling Little India area of Georgetown, therefore I expected it to be fairly noisy but we heard absolutely nothing from outside. However if you’re a light sleeper take some ear plugs as there can be some internal noise as it’s a restored heritage building. They try to mitigate this by operating quiet hours between 10pm and 8am and this does work. The building has been lovingly restored and provides a peaceful setting, there are lots of lovely little seats and nooks to sit and relax outside of your room. The rooms themselves continue this heritage theme. Don’t expect a tv and an amazing shower (it’s plenty good enough), but expect a tasteful decorated, practical and comfortable setting. If you’re stopping for a few nights in Georgetown then this place is ideal, if you’re staying a bit longer then East Indies will work, although you might want to consider a more “traditional” hotel.

I couldn't have enjoyed a stay more than what we had at East Indies Mansion. The staff were so friendly and accommodating throughout our time and it felt special to stay in such a well-kept and beautiful heritage style hotel. The room was spacious and spotless. There were thoughtful touches left on our beds such as local sweet treats and our water was always topped up after we'd been out during the day. The location in Little India was very central and perfect for getting around. It was nice and quiet at night too. I genuinely can't fault it! Thank you for a lovely stay, I hope to stay again!

Heritage turned hotel. One of the most amazing places I stayed in. Small caveats you need to note but you'll 120% enjoy the place if you don't mind them. I stayed 4 nights in the 3-pax Anistar 3 room. Greats: 1. History of the place. This was once an important figure's house. 2. The building, obviously. It feels luxurious being able to enjoy the space. 3. The owner and staff. They are friendly, respectful and happy to chat with you. We also arrived very late in the day that they could cater for. 4. Prime location. Most things in 10-min walking distance. 5. Cleanliness, spaciousness and fanciness of the room. 6. The public area in the house is actually enjoyable. Artifacts, books, bamboo sofas. 7. Very quiet place given that your neighbors are respectful too. 8. Daily snacks that actually taste good. Caveats: 1. Water pressure quite low. Not that it dampens the experience using the bathroom though. 2. Internet speed slow and unstable.

Beautiful restoration of an old Chinese merchant’s house that is a delight to stay in. Unlike the wealthy merchant who lived here 200 years ago, we get to not only enjoy the beautiful old building but also have modern plumbing and aircon. Breakfasts are great too. Fantastic location in the middle of Georgetown with so much at your doorstep.

A warm, attentive welcome, with an old colonial feel that can be felt in every corner of the East Indies Mansion. Our only regret was not being able to extend our stay for more days. Highly recommended. Best regards, all the staff.

Yelp
The East Indies Hotel is a historic mansion that has been restored to its former glory and converted into a boutique hotel. The rooms are tastefully decorated and the courtyards are serene and beautiful. The staff we met, Jess and Meg (?), were extremely responsive and accommodating, going out of their way to ensure we had a pleasant stay. Macaroni, the resident cat, was also friendly but unobtrusive and didn't enter the rooms. The hotel is located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Zone (and Little India), a lively and (perhaps too) bustling part of the city. Attractions and good restaurants are all within walking distance. Things we didn't like were pretty minimal, including the fact that there were no mirrors in the bathrooms of our two suites (Anistar 2 & 3), lack of clarity regarding breakfast (the website and TripAdvisor page both show free breakfast as a standard amenity, but we were told initially that our rate didn't include breakfast and would be charged RM15 per person for it; after showing Jess the website, he agreed that it did indeed indicate breakfast was free according to the text there and gave us free breakfast for our two nights there), and thin walls/creaky floors, though that's to be expected from such an old building. Other things to mention are that the rooms and common areas were all very clean, and that the free Wi-Fi worked at least decently throughout the mansion (note that there are two or three SSIDs to switch to depending on where you are in the hotel). All in all, an excellent stay in a beautiful old Chinese mansion in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Zone in Penang!
