East Indies Mansion

"The East Indies Mansion is a restored Peranakan hotel with 7 rooms (from $55 per night, including a hot breakfast and WiFi) and a location at the center of historic George Town. Domestic treasures of the city’s past, such as hand-hewn kitchen utensils, school desks, and ceramics decorate the two open-air courtyards. Although most rooms are ideal for two people, we love the duplex family suite, with two queen bed guestrooms connected by spiral staircase, access to a shared study, and a bathroom paved with Penang’s distinctively colorful tilework."

We had a wonderful visit to Georgetown, Penang just a couple of days ago with the family, and boy did we choose the right place to stay. The entire experience at East Indies Mansion was just absolutely fantastic.|| 1. The host was such a great, great person, so warm and hospitable, and she looked after us so well, as did the folks at the reception.| 2. The place is really right in the middle of Georgetown, a throwback to the old colonial days.| 3. It's a very nice boutique hotel experience that you probably wouldn't get in many places.||So for anyone who's looking for an absolutely 5-star boutique hotel experience that takes you back to another era, I would highly recommend that you take a look at East Indies Mansion.||Most of the places in Georgetown, at least near the port area, Fort area, Little India, they're all just walkable.||Yeah, highly recommended to anyone.||Thank you to everybody from the East Indies Mansion hospitalities part. You guys were just absolutely awesome.

Amazing hotel and I can't recommend it highly enough. Great location walking distance to lots of areas of interest. The house is just stunning, so historic and beautiful and with so much character, you feel like you're staying in someone's home. It really does give you a unique experience that you wouldn't get in other hotels. The staff were wonderful, so helpful and friendly we can't thank them enough.|We stayed in Clove 1 and 2 which were interconnecting rooms. The rooms were spacious and very clean. Breakfast was great with continental one day and dim sum another

Loved staying in this original Penang mansion. Tasteful interiors, books and objets d'arts. Super comfortable beds, delightful staff and a quiet respite from the buzz of the neighbourhood. Extremely well located for Little Indoa, Amenian and Chulia streets. My only gripes were that the lighting in the room was too dim and the room (Nutmeg) lacked natural light. Further, the coffee at breakfast was terrible! Bag coffee which was quite weak, a pity as breakfast was otherwise interesting, albeit limited in choice (you have a set "menu" each morning). There are no kettles or fridge in the rooms but you can help yourself to the communal area for tea, coffee, limited snacks and use of the fridge.

I loved my stay at East Indies Mansion Hotel. The hotel has been brilliantly restored and is an oasis of beauty and calm. AiTee, Kanmani, and Loke were always happy to assist with any queries, and the housekeeping staff are fantastic. The location is perfect, within walking distance of many attractions, and wonderful food. I was there for 12 days, and I miss it already. I hope to return. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality.

Everything about East Indies Mansion is special and beautiful. The pictures didn't even do it justice before we arrived. Don't debate it - definitely book some nights here! 🫶 Some practical info: there is filtered water, kitchen and refrigerator access. Our room had air conditioning. The bathroom was spotless and modern.

A beautiful sanctuary in the middle of George Town! We loved our stay at East Indies Mansion. From the moment we arrived Loke greeted us and checked us in. He was so helpful and polite. We booked Anistar 1 and the room was beautiful. Tastefully decorated and peaceful. Note that the room isn’t that accessible as there is a large step down to the bathroom. The manager (sorry I didn’t get her name) was really lovely too and so was the made that checked us out. There were some lovely little touches and it feels like they really care about their guests having a good stay. The whole house was very clean and super relaxing. Would highly recommend and would like to come back at some point! Thank you for a lovely stay!

This old mansion is stunning. There is so much character in each of the rooms and communal spaces. The service staff are extremely friendly and they accomodate all dietary requirements for breakfast including fussy children. Our friendly chef, rotated the breakfast with some traditional dishes which was appreciated. The location is also right in the heart of little India in George Town by close walk to the jetty and terrific temples and food spots

Staff were excellent, very helpful and friendly. The building itself is gorgeous and really offers a great insight into Penang culture. We enjoyed the small touches such as local snacks which elevated the stay even further.

Yelp
The East Indies Hotel is a historic mansion that has been restored to its former glory and converted into a boutique hotel. The rooms are tastefully decorated and the courtyards are serene and beautiful. The staff we met, Jess and Meg (?), were extremely responsive and accommodating, going out of their way to ensure we had a pleasant stay. Macaroni, the resident cat, was also friendly but unobtrusive and didn't enter the rooms. The hotel is located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Zone (and Little India), a lively and (perhaps too) bustling part of the city. Attractions and good restaurants are all within walking distance. Things we didn't like were pretty minimal, including the fact that there were no mirrors in the bathrooms of our two suites (Anistar 2 & 3), lack of clarity regarding breakfast (the website and TripAdvisor page both show free breakfast as a standard amenity, but we were told initially that our rate didn't include breakfast and would be charged RM15 per person for it; after showing Jess the website, he agreed that it did indeed indicate breakfast was free according to the text there and gave us free breakfast for our two nights there), and thin walls/creaky floors, though that's to be expected from such an old building. Other things to mention are that the rooms and common areas were all very clean, and that the free Wi-Fi worked at least decently throughout the mansion (note that there are two or three SSIDs to switch to depending on where you are in the hotel). All in all, an excellent stay in a beautiful old Chinese mansion in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Zone in Penang!
