On the Grid : Eastern Columbia

"A prominent beacon of yesteryear’s Art Deco fascination is the Eastern Columbia Building. Originally quartering the offices of both the Eastern Outfitting Company and the Columbia Outfitting Company, the building sits at the southern end of the Historic Core on Broadway, and is bedecked in blue tile and topped by a cascading clock tower. While entry is forbidden, linger around the tower’s exterior to admire many meticulous motifs of gilt zigzags, sunbursts, and geometric figures." - Canopy

I was doing HVAC work in this building they are remodeling. The building is very secure. It is clean. And the few lofts I went in are nice. If I had the money I would get one of these for my kids. Really nice place to live and quite. And once you get out side tons of place to choose from to eat shop and live life.

There is a beautiful corner loft in this building that’s for sale by owner:) - thelightfilledloft . com It should go to someone who appreciates it’s magic, there really is nothing like this incredible building. The residents that live there are wonderful, the neighborhood is impossibly hip, and the building itself is the jewel of LA. 💎🌃💙

I’ve been watching iCarly a lot and it shows the outside of the building which is really cool and I always wanted to check out this building because I Carly inspired me maybe one day I will check it out. It looks like a pretty cool I know of that celebrities live in this building but if I ever do check it out, it’ll be really cool. If you ever get a chance to watch iCarly, you’ll be reminded of looking at the outside of the building and recognize it The exterior shot

Yelp
I saw this building in an episode of Extra Extra and was just mesmerized. One reason I took a trip to LA recently was to see this building up close. The stunning 4 clocks with EASTERN proudly displayed, the turquoise, deep blue, and gold terra cotta, and wedding cake architecture. Considered the most magnificent remaining art deco building in Los Angeles. More beautiful than any building I have seen in New York from the period. The 80 million or so in restoration and conversion was money well spent. The only other property that cast this kind of spell on me was the Ramon Novarro house in Los Feliz. If you appreciate beautiful and historic buildings, this is not to be missed. Across the street from the Orpheum Theater and easy to find. Take a scenic walk from the Grand Central Market down the Broadway and admire other buildings from the period.

Yelp
I just wish this building was open to public... Maybe just some areas with limited basis?

Yelp
The outside of this building especially on 9th is one big urinal. There is a lack of regular power washing and the homeless and late night party people use the sides of the building as a toilet. The stench and puddles of waste are disgusting and this building is a poor neighbor to the other businesses and residential buildings in area.

Yelp
The Eastern Columbia building in DTLA has one of the best rooftop pools in Los Angeles and huge views of the city & beyond. You feel like you are on vacation at an exotic resort & in the evening drinks by the fireplace. This is a perfect example of a conversion of an upscale department store into loft live/work space. The #EasternColumbia is also a Mills Act building, which means substantially lower property taxes! The building is one you should consider if you are thinking about living in Los Angeles.

Yelp
OK, so I don't live here, but I've been to the building numerous times, and I have toured 3 of the penthouses. As a downtown loft dweller, I can at least speak about the building, finishes, and wow factor. This is a five star building simply because of its history. This building used to be a major department store back in the heyday of downtown. The original turquoise terra cotta shell is still intact, and the old clock gracing the top is in working order. The interiors are largely done by interior designer Kelly Wearstler, of KWID, and upon initial walk through, they look stately and grand and impart a certain sense of history. There have been recent LA times articles about residents in the building and word on the street is that Johnny Depp, various hollywood industry peeps, and possibly Dave Navarro may have purchased condos here. We shall see. The penthouse lofts that I toured were all unique and spacious. The finish of the units was high end. I especially liked the steel lined cabinets in the kitchens, high end appliances (sub zero friges), and dark wood floors. Some of the units had exposed brick which was also super cool. Another added perk is the fact that many of the upper floor units and penthouses are multi - leveled which adds a cool dimensional element to these chic living environments. My only gripe is that some of them seemed a little dark, but perhaps that was because I was walking through them at dusk. Also, the "darkness" may be secondary to the style that KWID is going for in these historical spaces....don't know. There is also a sweet workout room, rooftop pool, and outdoor rooftop lounge that add to the 'Damn!' appeal. Adding to all this, the trendy Broadway Bar is across the street, and I am hereby predicting right here and right now that Broadway will be revived to its former theatre glory by 2012. That's only 5 years to wait before living steps away from possibly the most happenin' and historic street in Los Angelees. At any rate, putting it all together, these are one of a kind lofts that are livable and uber cool, albeit expensive based on $$$ per sq. ft, but hey, you might just see Mr. Depp hangin' by the pool.
