We were there at the end of August. The place is just as their website describes. Low key. You can mind your own business and explore on your own, but the staff were helpful when we asked for cool places for the kids to see. It is not fancy, but comfortable. The cabins are sparse, but have water jugs, propane lights ( a bit dim, but easy to turn on), propane powered heater, which makes the cabin warm in no time and which we used in the morning as it did cool down at night. The cabins have picnic tables by the back porch. A lovely view of the meadow and at a distance a fire pit that is lit up at night by the staff. You can bring your smore stuff there.
The beds were on the hard side, but we had better sleep than in a tent. If you want soft, bring something from home. There is a table and chairs in the cabin as well and even a shelf with some books! They also provide towels.
We were staying Thursday to Saturday and it was emptish, but the sites filled up by Friday night. The tent sites are large. There are several restrooms that several sites share. All have solar lights on a timer, heater, shower stalls, flush toilets and hot water. They were kept very clean
We rode horses. One hour. Mark, the owner, took us out and was great. It was one of the most fun things we did. The horses were nice and gentle and the trail interesting.. We never rode before and now want to ride again. Our 8 year old daughter loved it too.
The cafe menu is limited, but the chili in a bread bowl and cheeseburgers were good. We also had chocolate cream pie, marionberry pie and mixed fruit pie - all were very good and home made. You have to eat during certain meal windows, makes it easier for the few staff, since they are out doing other things in between,
They have a bucket of ash and some pumice stones they find on the land and the kids were told they could take some for free. We liked the extra comfort and ease the place offered and the fact that we can keep to ourselves and explore when we wanted. It is close to the mountain and several visitor centers as well as the town of Toutle. The owner built most of it himself, was in the area during the eruption and has a great love for the place and it shows. He has great stories and knows a lot about the area. The staff were not many and they shared the duties, but we never had to wait much for anything. I recommend it for anyone. Just don't expect down bedding and lattes.
