Where to Stay in Auckland When You Visit (Updated 2025)

"Newton Lodge is a comfortable, safe hostel in the center of K-Road with cozy six-bed dorm rooms (including female-only dorms); I appreciated the thick, soft mattresses, electrical outlets by each bed, and the large kitchen for guests who want to save money by cooking." - Matthew Kepnes

This is a very clean, comfortable motel for a short stay. The price is reasonable as well. My husband and I stayed overnight to see a concert at the Newton Theater and loved the town and the different restaurants. Everything, including the people very nice. Although we are almost 2 hours away, I would love to come back for another concert and stay at the Econo Lodge.

This is a no-frills, pet-friendly hotel. Despite scary reviews, we found our room to be clean, with good mattresses, an impressive AC unit (in a heat wave!), large fridge, acceptable towels, with no cigarette smell in our non-smoking room. Despite its location, zero traffic noise at night; it only picked up during the morning commute. The downside: Dinged-up furniture, no coffee-maker in the room and coffee not available at the front office until 7 a.m. That said, it's $80 less than the Holiday Inn a few miles away. It's more like a very good Motel 6 instead of a sad Choice hotel.

Was in town for a wedding and stayed here on a Saturday night. The property is very outdated and not well taken care of. The room was gross. Floors were dirty. Bathroom was horrible. Dirty, broken window held together with tape. Some kind of smegma all over the bathroom wall and light switch Positives. Nice bed, pillows and TV.

Motel room small and very dated. In need of updating. However, it was cleaned and well maintained. Check in personnel friendly. The room I was in however could use more outside lighting, area was dark even in the day. The nighttime lights were dim. Serious safety concerns.

Gave 5 stars as we have been using the lodge for the pass 5 years, we do events at Spatra, NJ every Sept, and always stay here. Rooms are clean, shower water is hot and price is always good. Front desk is always friendly and helpful.

Considering the cost, it's an okay place to get some rest. The location is convenient and the clientele is hit or miss. I certainly would not want to stay here with my family. Coffee isn't available until 7 A.M. This was tough for me, as I left the hotel each morning around 6:30 A.M. There wasn't even a person at the front desk at that time. As with most things, you get what you pay for.

I requested a non-smoking room, but was placed in a smoking room regardless. I do not understand why any of your hotels allow smoking anymore. Room was dirty,

It’s a very basic no frills hotel. It was clean but the fridge cycled on and was loud. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I’ve ever slept in and even with all the pillows (I had a king bed) piled up it still felt like one pillow. It was clean and was 10-15 min from the wedding venue so it served its purpose

Yelp
The room was dirty, it was also somewhere about 50 sqft. The shower rod was dangling off the wall, the shower head seemed it hasn't been cleaned in several years. Plus a lot of other cleanliness issues and extensions cords dangling from the wall. Most troubling, there was a funky smell I could get rid of. I asked to switch rooms, but they didn't have any other king room available. I told them I would take whatever they had, however they would charge me more for another room. I was booked for a week and checked out after the first night, but they still charged me for the second night due to their "24 hour cancellation policy".

Yelp
We booked this hotel because we were attending a wedding in the area. We should have looked at reviews beforehand. Our son and his friend had another room at the hotel and had the same problems in their room. None of us spent the night there, it was disgusting! The room was tiny & had an unclean feeling to it. When we removed the top blanket and top sheet we saw multiple bedbugs crawling on the sheets. We notified the office, they came and looked, said they saw nothing. We left, could not bare to sleep in that place. Next day called for a refund, they were rude on the phone, denied having bedbugs, and would not issue a refund. We would NOT recommend staying at this Econo Lodge ever!

Yelp
Room was clean and had mini fridge. Basically fine. It had a weird odor and the beds were not comfortable.

Yelp
Decided to stay here because the other hotel in Newton was booked. If you just need a place for 1 night then it's fine but I wouldn't recommend for an extended stay. The outside looks clean, nice and new. The inside tells a different story. It's old, looks glued/painted together and dirty. There were stains all over the chairs. The mini fridge was set on MAX and froze everything we had in there. We had 2 rooms and all key cards stopped working at some point but may have been because we kept them near a cell phone, I don't know. At one point we came back and the door wasn't even locked. PRO- The only good thing I have to say about it is it was really cheap and the beds were comfortable. We would not stay there again. Also, the man at the front desk was very nice!

Yelp
Front desk. Rude , after check in we return to see about non smoking room , and to our surprise the lady at front desk was referring to my wife a a fucking idiot to someone behind the desk , and said we could not get a non smoking room they were booked , asked to speak to manager and said he's was not there and we could wait , she said no refunds we left without a refund as my wife did not feel safe i spent 6 night though out the there, Never again will the stay there,

Yelp
I stayed in room 110. We stayed here because we have family nearby and there's little to no other options if you have a dog. We had a number of problems - ants in the bathroom (yes in the middle of January), dust on the headboards and ceiling. Lots of noise from outside on the first night of our stay until the wee morning hours. Doors slamming, someone outside screaming on their phone. The second night when we arrived back to our room at 1015pm, someone was parked outside our room inside their car with the car running. They remained there for nearly 2 hours. After that they frequently went between their room and their car running, slamming doors, etc. it was creepy and we felt unsafe. There is no security provided at this hotel. Also this hotel DOES NOT PROVIDE A CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST AS ADVERTISED "due to COVID" - I'm sorry, but providing prepacked food like muffins, yogurt, cereal, milk, bagels, etc. is SAFE FOR COVID, and I believe this hotel is using the COVID excuse to not have to provide breakfast when the prices for the room reflect that to be included.Coffee, hot water, and juice was available - but the second day there was no juice. NJ law doesn't require masks, however I got my head "bit off" by the front desk employee when I forgot to wear one to get coffee our first morning. To the point that she would not stop harassing me the entire time I was pouring my coffee and juice. When my hands were finally free, I tucked my face in my jacket as far up as it would zip so she would shut up. I've never seen anyone so rude or upset about someone else not wearing a mask - especially to a paying customer!!! Keep in mind, she was about 10 feet away from me and the entire front desk where she stood is covered in plexiglass. I also thought it was a bit strange upon checking in, the same staff member requested all guests to keep the water dripping in their sinks all the time so the pipes don't freeze. Also the exterior doors don't have proper seals. You can easily see the light from outside coming under the door and freezing cold air blowing in all the seams of the door, besides the hinge side. I can imagine in the summer bugs would easily come in the room. The towels provided for bathing are a joke. They are so small they would only fit a 12 year old, maybe. I am an average (size 14) woman, and could not wrap the towel around me. If this is a quick one night stop for a single person in the middle of winter, you might be ok. Linens and bathroom (besides ants) were clean. But I was with my mother; and I would never stay here again. I don't think this is on par for the price paid $81 a night.

Yelp
My friends and I booked 4 rooms here over the weekend due to accommodations being full elsewhere for an event. I travel frequently for a living so I make it a habit to check the rooms for safety and cleanliness. To be clear I understand this is not a 5 star hotel, but my expectations for basic cleanliness are standard. This place failed my assessments miserably. I wish the following horror story was exaggerated. (spoiler alert : it is 100% true with photo evidence.) It was a late summer evening in Newton, NJ. A group of young adults and myself, ignorant and naive to what comes next, happily walked together to our prospective rooms. Our smiles and happy chatter quickly faded into hushed tones as we ventured onwards. Just then, we were greeted by our room's "lovely" view of a random man's penis swaying in the wind as he and his female friend decided to hang about in the parking area with his female companion instead of their own room. I thought to myself, "How strange to see even these interesting characters unwilling to use the lovely accommodations? Note to self, best check the window locks just in case..." The group quickly dispersed (in hopes to avoid other neighbors hanging about). My roommate ran to our door and quickly fiddled with our keys to the "safety" of our room. We immediately went in and locked our door. If you are planning on staying here at the Travelodge in Newton, NJ I regret to inform you that technology has not progressed to where you can capture smells in a review. Alas! You, dear reader, will just have to rely on your imagination. Our noses were assaulted by the overbearing smell of the ghosts of past inhabitants. In my room, my nose discerned the strong smell of cigarettes. It was like they bottled up 40 years of chainsmoking. I quickly realized that we had a smoking room and ran to the windows directly by the door to air out the room only to find them wide open. This was literally as good as it was going to get. Grrrreat! I recommend if you plan on staying here to bring your own room spray. I come prepared with room spray and proceeded to cover the smoke smell with lilac. It wasn't the best, but we were tired and would soldier on. I then remembered to check the window locks and found that both windows had broken locks so no stars for safety. If you stay here, I guess leave your belongings locked in your car. That's probably safer. Received calls from our friends who were also greeted by smells of Travelodge guests past. They relayed that in their room the smell of smoke was masked by the overwhelming odor of what my eloquent friend described as "ball sweat and ass". They decided to abandon their room for the evening and join us instead. I proceeded to do my usual room inspections to prepare for their arrival. Our room was a double. Decor was dated and the decorator was probably told "I want you to make this room have the vibe that make our guests comfortable to film porn, shoot up drugs, and bring their prostitutes." The decorator probably exceeded their expectations. I walked into the bathroom and the window with no blinds, curtains, or cover with direct view to my seat on the toilet would probably give great views to the voyeurs likely waiting outside. The top blanket was riddled with holes from cigarette burns or moth eaten. The sheets seemed clean enough, but I removed them and the bed cover to inspect the mattress for bed bugs. I know what you're thinking. You're probably thinking I'm going to complain of bed bugs. Haha! Jokes on you. No. I did not find those friends. Instead I leave you photos of every bodily fluid imaginable heavily stained into to not one, but both mattresses. We all exclaimed, "Blood! Urine! Feces! Sperm! Oh my!" That was the last straw and we all promptly left this place and never looked back. Honestly, we would rather camp out in our cars at our event venue than come here. That option is cleaner and safer than this establishment. This Travelodge should be reported to the department of health for its deeply unsanitary conditions. As I burn my hands off to kill the probable diseases I contracted from touching those mattresses, I leave you with this final note... Save your money and run very far away from this place. I wish I could leave no stars because that is what this deserves. I guess they can have 1 star for having a fridge and tv available. 10/10 would not recommend.

Yelp
North New Jersey. Who would've thought I would be here? I had been in Atlantic City, NJ 5 years ago in 2013, but now that I'm in the north part of the state, I figure I'd stay here at this cozy but quaint Econolodge. It was relatively cheap and located near where I wanted to be. Choice Hotels and it's umbrella of hotel brands have been a good alternative choice for me, since they are budget friendly hotel brands that give superior clean hotel / motel rooms that are safe and comfortable at a fraction of the corporate hotel corporations - usually generally speaking on average. I decided to book this hotel for 2 nights while attending to an ultra marathon footrace event that was about 9 miles away at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. I found this hotel property on Hotels.com, one of the best websites to find hotels online these days. Upon arrival on a rainy Friday night in November 2018 in north New Jersey in a town called Newton, I arrived safely and checked into the hotel around 6:30pm. Econolodge tries to be that neighborhood motel that opens its arms to everyone. I was glad that this Econolodge was close enough to where I needed to be. The lady at the front counter was nice and friendly. The service was good and got it done within 5 minutes. Econolodge is like my home away from home. The rooms itself were relatively basic. No bells and whistles here, just a comfortable roof over your head for your travels at an affordable price. That's basic stuff right here. The overall experience here at this Econolodge location in Newton New Jersey was good, comfortable, and yet average too. While it is nice to have those bells and whistles that come with the hotel room experience, the basics are just okay too. As long as the beds are comfortable for a great night's rest (or two) and it's in a relatively safe location, all is right with the world pretty much - at least for me it is. During my stay here, I got to partake in the complimentary breakfast, which consisted of waffles, juice, cereal, and muffins. Not too much of a variety, but free breakfast is a real thing when you're traveling on a budget. This Econolodge hotel is situated at 448 US Hwy 206 South, Newton, New Jersey. Like most hotels in the industry, they accept major credit cards. The Econolodge is comprised of 3 buildings, with the lobby in the center building. There is plenty of parking options here, since many people drive here. Closest airport would probably Newark airport. There is uber and Lyft services to get to and from here, but best bet would be to have your own wheels or to rent one, like how I had one at my own disposal during this trip. Prices here can be good, depending on your price range. They can range from $75-$120/night with taxes and fees. For the most part though this stay at this Econolodge wasn't half bad. It wasn't the best, but you know how it is. It was good enough to rate it a good stay. Got a decent amount of sleep both nights while I was there before heading back to Baltimore, Maryland for my flight home. I stayed in room 125 for 2 nights and those double beds were good. Slept on one for the first night and the other bed on the final night of my stay. I had to get some value for my money by sleeping on both beds. I had a mishap with my rental car (flat tire) during my stay and the lady at the front counter was nice enough to let me use the hotel phone to call the car rental company for a tow truck and a ride to Newark, NJ for a replacement vehicle. Notwithstanding this incident, I can say that staying at this Econolodge here in Newton New Jersey was good. Comfortable and reasonably priced for your travel needs. It isn't the Hilton or a Sheraton, but it was close to where I needed to be and it got the job done. Recommended if you are in the area for business or vacation and need a place to stay. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. Everything worked in the room and the shower was nice after the ultra marathon event. 4.0 stars for the prices, although 3.5 stars for the complimentary breakfast. Free is free. Can't be too choosy though. Support local! B

Yelp
My daughter and I stayed her for 3 nights and it was great! I was worried about the past reviews but we had no issues. It was clean and the front desk staff was super nice and welcoming. We would stay here again!

Yelp
I'll start this by saying how nice the two staff members I encountered were. They were very accommodating with my very late check in. I highly recommend them. Now, the rest. When we got to our room, the door had not been pulled to so it opened with a slight touch. Once in the room REEKED of cigarette smoke. It was horrible and absolutely everywhere. The bathroom was freezing because the top window had slid down some because the lock was broken. The bottom part of the window was broken and covered with cardboard and tape. In order to feel safe, we blocked the door with the ironing board just in case someone broke in. I know budget hotels are cheap for a reason but this was beyond acceptable. Had it not been nearly midnight, we would have asked for our money back and left. The bed was actually very comfortable but the three pillows on the king were pancake thin, lumpy and very small. We tried to sleep but the cigarette smell was so bad that it triggered my lung condition and I had an asthma like attack. Even my husband slept with a hoodie pulled over his face to try and lessen the smell. The hotel was such a poor experience that we ended up modifying the next day activities because we were absolutely exhausted. Room 140 was a nightmare. I'm sure other people have had good experiences but you couldn't pay me to stay here again.

Michael M.

Yelp
I would give less than one star if I could, overpriced dump. Drunk foul mouthed customers allowed to just yell at other guests (such as my elderly parents), bugs, no clean towels. Horrible coffee... shall I go on? Couldn't keep me in the same room so had to check out and check back in, prices fluctuated from day to day depending on who dealt with. I would steer clear of this place, dishonest, unsafe environment.

Joyce W.

Yelp
We stayed one night February 2022. The price was very affordable, the room was clean. The people in the office are crazy obsessed with masks (which do nothing to keep viruses out). They were actually obnoxious about it. I am sick to death of people who think it is perfectly normal to wear masks for the rest of our lives. There was free coffee in the morning(Which was horrible), no milk, no cream, no juice as promised. So basically if you are looking for a clean affordable room where you will be treated like Typhoid Mary this is the place to go.

Susan S.

Yelp
Hey Janet, you said you had a strict coVID 19 cleaning policy. What about the hair in my shower then? Interesting!

Yelp
One star because I could not give zero stars........BUGS! They have either fleas or bed bugs! DON NOT STAR HERE. I told the front office I needed a new room due to. Bugs and the front desk offered us a can of lysol to take care of the "issue". They also refused to look at the room and asked if we left a window open....

Yelp
Unfortunately the infestation of bed bugs bigger than John Paul George and Ringo Star was too overwhelming to ignore.Dont believe me? Go there now and look in the back lot to see the mattresses piled up.My question is why weren't all the mattresses taken out and replaced with new ones?Answer:I was told by the night counter woman clerk on Saturday Jan 7th at 6:30p.m. that they don't inspect the rooms but rather only change the mattress if the customer can no longer stand bed bugs crawling through their hair.Trouble is my good buddy Greg is trying to drink himself into the grave since his girl passed away and doesn't seem to care.sad but true.I'm only leaving this yelp because I was hung up on twice when complaining about it.She could have taken a message and acted like she cared but no she had to ask "Whadda you care if your not staying here? Terrible customer service!!!Bed Bugs anyone? The fact that they've left mattresses piled up in the back for all to see tells you how much they really care about keeping up appearances.Econo Lodge "You pay for what you get and scratch for what you itch!!!

Yelp
I have some friends in the New Jersey area and booked a room here during a weekend long visit. The hotel was a little difficult to find via GPS so I would suggest looking it up as a "point of interest" or via a search rather than by address - it seemed to work much better that way for us. The location is set up like an old-school motel with all guest rooms entered from outdoors with an office in the center area of the two wings. The office and "breakfast area" were pretty small and I don't think more than 4-5 people could comfortably be in there at once but it is very clean and well kept up. The guest rooms are very affordable (about $65/night on the weekend) and of surprisingly good quality for the price. The beds were clean and new, the carpets well-maintained and each room seems to also include a sitting area as well as wifi service and flat-screen TVs. The bathrooms are small, but kept up and not out-of-date like you might find at other budget minded motels. The staff is quick to help and to share their local knowledge. If you're in this area of NJ and looking for an affordable,short-trip stay I recommend it heartily.

Yelp
I arrived and headed for the reception desk. The area outside the main entrance reeked strongly of cigarette smoke. I was given a room. It was a standard motel room. It appeared clean, but there was a slight scent of smoke to everything in the room. As I am allergic, and also because I had paid for a nonsmoking room and didn't want to be charged a cleaning fee because of the odor, I returned to the front desk to let them know. I was given another room, this time upstairs above reception, which was a lot less convenient but didn't smell of smoke, although I had to walk through the horribly smelly area outside to get to it. The room was run down, but clean. The ceilings were sloped, low enough that I had to stoop to walk in some parts of the room. The door lock seemed a bit iffy, and the dead bolt was not functional. I departed for an evening social function for which I was in town, taking my valuables with me. When I returned the room was chilly, so I turned on the heater. This promptly filled the room with a light scent of cigarette smoke. It may be that all the rooms in this motel are *officially* non-smoking, but unofficially, everywhere you go on the property you can smell it. I managed to get part of a night's sleep, but woke up early choking on heavy cigarette smoke which had filled the room while I was asleep, and I was rather ill from it for several days. I barely managed to stay in the room long enough to shower, and then rushed to get out as quickly as possible to get away from the smoke. I will not be returning.

Yelp
You get what you pay for. I had a wedding to go to in Newton, so this was super close by and the cheapest room I could find. For an inexpensive room, you got a bed, TV with cable and a shower/bathroom. +1 The shower was roomy, but nowhere to put toiletries, as there were no shelves. +1 -1. The room I had was a smoking room, I didn't know they still made those! +1 The hotel staff at night barely spoke English and didn't know where the local pizza place was. -1 The windows were able to open for ventilation and the air/heat worked well. +1 There were no hooks in entire room, so we had to hang our wedding clothes in shower. -1 They had a Continental breakfast with a legit waffle maker! +1 Over all - this was a decent place to stay for a night or two. Anymore, I would suggest going somewhere else as I am sure you will be sick of it by then. And no matter how long your stay, I would also advise to bring your own sheets/pillow cases. Just in case...you never know what goes on in these motels.

Yelp
Wow, for an economy motel, what a great place. SUPER clean rooms, good TV with Dish Network, friendly lady at the front desk. Price was quite reasonable / cheap for the area. Didn't feel at all shady, which unfortunately is not often the case with Econo Lodges. Would stay here again.

Mike A.

Yelp
The biggest plus, unusual for a budget motel, was the comfortable, new king-size bed. Though it took up most of the limited space in the room, it was not the typical rock-hard bed now found in most budget and mid-range properties. Also, the place was clean, and did not have any odors. There was a decent sized flat screen in the room with Dish TV, as well as a mini-fridge and microwave. The bathroom, though a little odd, was freshly remodled. By odd, I mean that the tp roll was about 4 feet from the throne, and there was no place to put soap or shampoo when in the shower (which had limited water pressure). Breakfast was the typical cereal, pastries, and waffle maker. Adding a vending machine or two would be a nice touch, as would a washer/dryer or two. The biggest minus was, despite the reasonable rates, angst when it came to accepting corporate rate during the summer period. I get the supply and demand thing, but when I had to pay $225 out of my own pocket above the corporate direct bill rate to get into the place (there were no other options in the area), my employer resisted and argued with them several times to resolve. Be VERY aware that you will be in a wooded area. When strolling behind the motel (open field) at 7pm one evening, I found that I was approaching a black bear who was coming the other way. I was maybe 30 feet away when I saw her....... as a city boy, my heart skipped more than a few beats. I also saw some sort of a wild dog, maybe a coyote or wolf hybrid, in the parking lot once during my 2 week stay. Nothing the motel can do about this, but you need to know. The Italian place next door is the typical, family fare found in areas like this, with friendly young wait staff. Perfectly acceptable, but neither the prices or food would be anything special in more populated areas. But it was fine once in awhile. Not sure if it is the same owner, because the building resembles the motel buildings.

Scott D.

Yelp
I spent over a week here and it started out ok then turned into a disaster! After 6 nights here they made me switch rooms. The second room was disgusting!!! Had dead, dried up bugs on the walls and the bathroom was dirty. Not only dirty but the toilet seat wouldn't stay up. So I had to hold it up while taking a leak. My Dish Network was out for most of my stay. Management could care less. When bringing this all to their attention it was as if I was talking to a wall. If you have other options.....take them!!! THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO MY WORST ENEMIES
