You want honesty about EPHS, here it is. When it comes to student diversity, it's amazing. However, the unspoken but very present racism/prejudice is very real. The new principle does NOT care about ALL students. Unless your child is white, athletic, skinny, and conforms to social norms, they will be treated like scum. The principle does not care about any departments of the school other than the athletics. I have never witnessed him at any choir, band, or orchestra concerts. I've never personally seen him go to any plays or art exhibitions, or even acknowledge them for that matter. He spends so much money on BRANDING the school with fancy new TVs (which no one even use) and new wallpapers (which are some of the ugliest things I have ever seen) while the art department are being basically self funded by the teachers and students. My freshman year we didn't HAVE to pay anything while in any art classes, and if we did pay it was only $15 and we could take home a bundle of supplies, but now we have to pay upwards of $40 and don't get anything. Even with the $40 we were using old, moldy paint and no longer were allowed to do murals around the school.
During my time at EPHS I noticed many passive aggressive remarks targeted towards the students who did not fit in by parents, fellow students, and the principle himself. I, myself, did not fit in at EPHS. Because of that I was bullied, I got plenty dirty looks, and passive aggressive remarks from anyone who didn't deem me as "worthy." From the principle himself I got these as well. And the school did not seem to care, or see these behaviors illustrated by the student body and fellow coworkers.
The principle would often stand at the doors to the school and say good morning to the students, whenever I or someone who did not "fit in" walked in he would immediately dart his eyes away. I worked at an establishment where many Eden prairie staff and students would go, and on many occasions I would see the principle. Whenever he came in he was extremely rude, and very cold. Whenever this happened I would give him the benefit of the doubt and think maybe he was having a bad day, but once a "normal" student walked in he would become the warmest most gentle hearted person you ever did see.
All of the principle problems aside, the student culture is beyond toxic. With the extreme pressure to conform, the unspoken hierarchy system, and undying racism the school can sometime feel too much to bear. I, on many occasions, have seen and felt the way the students treat the people who "don't conform." They treat them like zoo animals to gauche at, they give them dirty looks and treat them like they aren't even human. Bullying in the school is very much alive and the staff seem to very much not care. I need to make this clear: not every student is terrible, not every teacher is terrible; but there are enough bad eggs to say this batch is spoiled. The students can be absolutely cruel. Personally, people have thrown wet toilet paper and paper towels at me over the stall walls, I've had people antagonize me through stall doors, I've had people spread rumors, and treat me like I wasn't even human, etc.. and those were just a few acts that I have experienced in the span of two years.
The school is so focused on "Eagle nation" and stuff alike that they don't even realize the real problems behind it. "Eagle nation" only really applies to the students that "fit in" and conform. If you do not conform you might as well not even exist in that school. This "conformity" applies to race as well. In the Student hierarchy system there is a very prevalent racism problem. It's just a fact that within the school, according to the school hierarchy, any POC that goes to the school will not "fit in." There have been plenty of racist teachers, I have personally witnessed MANY racist remarks towards POC teachers and students, and much more. (WHICH IS COMPLETELY B***S***! (Pardon my language)) according to the unspoken hierarchy system any POC student won't be seen as "cool" as the white students. They have never been seen at the same "level" as the white students. Let me just mention that when the class of 2020 graduated the 2020 cup sign was up for weeks! And once someone changed it to BLM they took it down within A DAY! EPHS DOES NOT STAND WITH BLM!
The racism, homophobia, classism, and Over all prejudice of the school aside the diversity of teachers and curriculum also seems to be a problem. During my entire school career I have seen maybe 2 or 3 POC teachers. Not only that but the school, in terms of history, only teach one side of the story. From my time at EPHS I remember very few times hearing more that one side if the story. Especially in terms of race related history. I, also, never learned any LGBTQ+ history either. I am well aware that the American school system is MESSED UP, but there should be some serious change.
