Taste Wine Along the San Andreas Fault Line

"Located in the dry, oak‑fringed Cienega Valley near Hollister, this remote estate sits in shattered granite and limestone soils and houses California’s oldest continuously planted vineyard (vines dating back to 1849). Owner Christian Pillsbury offers quiet, contemplative tastings outside the early-20th-century Dickinson House and produces well-regarded Pinots, Chardonnays, and Syrahs (and occasionally a tiny-production, century‑old-vine Zinfandel), with the property’s bright-white roads and profound silence underscoring its dramatic geological origins; ATV tastings are an option for deeper exploration." - Ray Isle

DO NOT BRING YOUR DOGS! Their website states "We love our furry friends but our estate welcomes service dogs only." THIS IS NOT TRUE! They apparently have 2 working dogs on their property and are able to roam freely. We had barely walked past the entrance with our two leashed goldendoodles when one of their dogs attacked both of my dogs. Their dog first grabbed a hold of my 35 lb doodle by the back of his neck and forced him to the ground. Then the dog turned and attacked my 55 lb doodle and attempted to bite her as well. A lady from the winery came around the corner after hearing the commotion and apologized for not seeing us come in. She proceeds to say that they do not allow dogs. When I said that a sign may be helpful, her reply was "we're working on it!" REALLY??? How hard is it to get a pen and paper! Needless to say, we left and will never go back!

An absolutely gorgeous winery nestled in the rolling hills above Hollister. We loved all of their wines but the Pinot Noir and Rose of Pinot Noir were definitely special. Perfectly balanced, full of nuanced flavor, and delectable. The service was wonderful, prompt, and kind. It definitely is a pretty far drive out there but worth it for the blissful wine tasting experience

Couldn’t have been a more perfect afternoon here! Veronica and Alex were SO wonderful to us, essentially treating us like old friends (super appreciated the generous pours btw!) Their stories about the property, the valley, the wines and even wine producing family made for a memorable experience alongside the obvious reason to go, the wine tasting! Im a huge Pinot Noir fan so having the 3 different ones was right up my alley and enjoying the unique Pinot Gris (only terraced PG in the whole state!) and the perfectly balanced Chardonnay beforehand made for a nice sampling. Their dogs too were so sweet and our little boy LOVED playing with them. Really could see future events and celebrations being held here!

Google
A serious spot for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir lovers! Limestone soils, amazing breadth of clones, and artisan wine making are the highlights here! I love it so much I got a part time job here after joining the wine club! Will not disappoint!

What an incredible experience and wine! They staff is so friendly and make you feel so comfortable. We celebrated a birthday and had the 5 wine tastings with the cheese and crackers. I recommend making a reservation and you are allowed to sit anywhere. It was 100 degrees but there was a lovely breeze. The tables have umbrellas and the staff will move things around for you. Im definitely going to come back in the future! 💖

The weather is nice and the vineyards are beautiful! Pinot Noir is my favorite and I will come back again.

This is such a gem of a place. Beautiful surroundings, fun and nice staff, solid pinots and awesome vineyard dogs. Their tasting lawn next to a beautiful old house is joy. A great stop after a day hiking in Pinnacles.

Google
What a hidden treasure! The atmosphere and surroundings were relaxing and welcoming. Veronica was our ‘pourer’ and was so informative and also very sweet! We enjoyed our time tasting their delicious wine!!! On top of that we met their vintner, Cory! Cory and Veronica gave us an education and hospitality that passed our expectations. I feel that we were treated but I realize that they were just being themselves. Refreshing. We plan on making this wonderful place, a habit.

Yelp
Hanna was the perfect hostess. It was a cold day, and we were able to sit inside. It was a lovely, informal wine tasting enjoyed by all four of us. Hanna spoke to us about the wines, and was very attentive. The Lansdale Pinot Noir & Terrace Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc were the favorites of our group. Thank you, Hanna for the wonderful wine tasting.

Yelp
The wine was good, the server was sweet. Blankets were provided for the cold, but still able to enjoy the fall view and vineyards. Unfortunately our experience was dampened when we went back through the same door we were shown through to have the owner talk negatively about us to his guests for us to hear because we went through an "employee only" door to access the restroom. It was the only door we were shown and that is at no fault to the server, as an owner not great etiquette to talk about your patrons in a negative light for them to overhear. No matter which door we went through it still would have "interrupted" you and your guests/time. Left us with a bad taste ending to our nice time.

Yelp
Worth the 20 minute drive from downtown Hollister to this beautiful winery located in the hills south of Hollister. Tressa ( hope I spelled her name right) our hostess was very friendly and knowledgeable about the wines they offer. We tasted several nice wines. The have a nice chard but my favorite of the day was 2020 petite sirah "valiant" a nice rich dark red wine with balanced tannins. I had to bring some home with me.

Yelp
Stopped by here on a Sunday after visiting De Rose just down the street. We had previously been to the De Rose tasting room in San Martin and liked it. We didn't like the winery tasting room as much. We were thinking of going to either Calera or Eden Rift afterwards leaning towards Eden Rift because their website noted a Petite Sirah as well as Pinots while Calera pretty much only had Pinots. The guy at De Rose said to go to Calera and not Eden Rift. Glad we didn't listen to him. It was about 3:20 on a Sunday and the tasting room closes at 4pm. There was a couple in front of us and their host kind of disuaded them from tasting since they would be closing soon and just sold them a couple of glasses of wine I believe. Luckily we were greeted by Sarah and after a brief conversation of what we look for in our wines she said that she could hook us up with a sort of mini flight of some Pinots and the Petite Sirah of course. We tasted 3 Pinots, the Estate, the Terraces, and the Landsdale. Sarah gave us a great little presentation into each wine, where they were grown and what sort of flavors we should find in them. She was extremely friendly and informative. We ended up liking pretty much everything but went home with bottles of the Estate and Landsdale Pinots as well as the Petite Sirah. While looking at the map of the Eden Rift vineyards I noticed that they had plots of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedres. I asked Sarah if E.R. had plans to make a GSM as that tends to be pretty much our favorite type of wine. Sarah said that they did indeed have some in the works but it wouldn't be ready for another year or so. Can't wait to see how that wine turns out. So we ended up having an awesome time with Sarah at Eden Rift. She actually stayed with us until about 4:30pm with no pressure at all for us to leave since they closed at 4pm. Excellent customer service.

Yelp
Even though I've never arrived on the helipad, I love that they have one! Let's get serious, Dre is one of the outstanding reasons why we keep coming back for great wine tasting and perfect service. And, be sure to schedule the ATV Wine Tasting Tour through the vineyards with friends, where you taste the wine grown and harvested at each stop. We were lucky -we were able to ride with Christopher who is the expert visionary behind this exceptional winery who made the tour so fun & memorable. The style of wine is elegant, our favorites include the Estate Pinot and Chardonnay. Beautiful views, the cutest wine dogs and great seating under the big shady trees to relax and unwind. We have ridden our e-bikes to the winery going the back way up Cienega Road from Paicines Ranch where we parked and rode in. Always a delightful time at Eden Rift. Love this special hidden gem...

Yelp
Had a really great time here. Good wine, and really nice scenery to enjoy with the wine! Service was also really great -- all staff and owners were wonderful and explains lots about the wines we tried.

Yelp
We had the pleasure of visiting Eden Rift Vineyards and let me say, this place is a hidden gem!! We had the best time and a wonderful wine tasting experience. Saul and Fabian are passionate about their work and it clearly shows, they are knowledgeable and are so enthusiastic to show off the beautiful grounds. The vineyards right now look rustic and absolutely stunning! Eden Rift also has an excellent selection of pinot noir, rose, zin, and chardonnay...:our group of friends left with an assortment of wine. A shout out to Debra, Cookie, and Mikayla...they were gracious and very friendly and of course Zoe the vineyard dog. We can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I was in Santa Cruz visiting my daughter and we stopped down there to check out the wines. The facility is beautiful and the wines were fantastic, in particular the pinots, chardonnays, and cabs. We loved the wines and joined their wine club, so we can receive them on a regular basis. We are looking forward to returning to Eden Rift next time we are in the area!

Yelp
A hidden gem in Hollister! After visiting many many vineyards throughout the years, something that sets Eden Rift apart is their unique wine tasting experiences. My husband and I recently signed up for the picnic tour and we LOVED it! We walked about 3 miles around the estate, sampled four wines, and enjoyed a bottle of sauvignon blanc and lunch on their picnic tables. We also met the proprietor and staff, and learned more about the winery's rich history. They have several projects in the works and I'm excited to see everything come together! This was our second visit here and we were very impressed. We definitely hope to return for an ATV wine tasting tour. I'd also highly recommend checking out if you're looking for a venue space, helicopter tour, or just some quality wine :)

Yelp
I LOVE Eden Rift! If you live in the Bay Area and want to do some wine tasting, I highly recommend Eden Rift. I first heard of Eden Rift at a Yelp Elite event. I Decided to take another trip down to this winary. This was the second time I came to Eden Rift. I ended up getting signed up for their emails, and I am glad I did. They had a valentines day hike + tasting with lunch, and it was WORTH every penny. I LOVE this event and I hope Eden Rift has more of these throughout the year! We had a great time, even though it was raining on us. The premises is truly beautiful! I highly recommend coming here. Their wines are fantastic as well. I am not a white wine drinker, but I highly recommend their white wine. Service was also phenomenal as always. Very sweet people and great wine! Definitely check out this place!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this particular winery for a few months due to its location and soil type. It was a beautiful property with very knowledgeable staff. I think I've found my new favorite Pinot producer in California! I'm not too into whites but if someone poured me their chardonnay I wouldn't be upset.

Yelp
Priceless, Elevated ATV wine tasting tour at Eden Rift vineyard. As an Elite squad member, I feel fortunate to have Katie as south Bay manager to introduce us to Eden Rift vineyard for the yelp's vino voyage 2022. This is a hidden Gem within your reach! all you have to do is hop in the car drive about 1hour 20mn from North San Jose on the boring drive on highway 101, 25, 156, then you start to wonder if you are in the right path for this ques. Yes you are , keep going, after you left 156 and see: welcome to Hollister Hills the drive is actually pretty nice. Then much later you start to see some vineyard, you have arrived. When you enter the property the open parking space by the vineyard are wide open gives you the beauty of the surrounding, then you walk away toward the store, the lawn where they have the outside tables, umbrellas. From the lawn area it doesn't feel much different compare to the other wineries you have visited, other than its much secluded and quieter and if you look around you will notice that you are surrounded by smaller Hills with small trees. The vineyard is 120 acres in a small valley of 500 acres property they set the vineyard inside the hills included some terraces on the hills around the valley for pinot noir, the terrasses are really nice and wide enough for the ATV, tractors to go through also add some characteristics to the vineyard looking from above. This is one of the winery who have many different range of wine variety for wine tasting I have visited in the near by winery, though their focus is pinot noir and make a couple amazing different pinot noir from different locations in the vineyard and the terraces in the meant time they make an amazing white variety like their amazing, pinot Gris is crisp fresh not sweet and not too dry, fruit forward, easy to drink for a non wine drinker, I think this wine is for everyone to enjoy on a hot summer days, the rose of Pinot is clean easy to drink low sugar content very refreshing, a couple of different chardonnay made differently based on the location and the terroirs in the vineyard. The 2018 estate pinot Noir was smooth and silky in the palette with a note blackberry easy to drink on its own. The Palmtag Pinot noir was amazing light and delicate in the palette, one doesn't have to be a wine expert to appreciate this is one of kind well made pinot Noir. I am a Pinot Noir and Cabernet girl I enjoyed their pinot noir a lot but I also enjoyed the whites especially the pinot Gris was a hit for me for their white. Then the host : For me Christian and Ed went above and beyond anyone's expectations for this event. They took an extra miles to guaranty everyone's expectation for wine and fun, totally elevate my wine tasting experiences. When Christian guided me and my table mate away from the lawn we had no clue where he was taking us but we tag along anyway. Then he took us to the ATV at the front of the store; I looked at my almost empty wine glass and thought, I wish I had more wine in my glass, and off we went on a tours around the vineyard, the second we hopped on that ATV everything was wide open and you can see the hills above the vineyard, we ride and sip our little wine left in our glasses , he showed us everything along the way , explain the different grapes they grow in each area, the wine production area, the wedding venue. Then from distance we see glimpse of wine bottles in a cooler on a table, lots of clean wine glasses, what a surprises for all of us, OMG I was happy, I was ready for a poor. ATV stopped and Christian said " I have the keys" and offer us their best of the best : Estate Chardonnay Reserve 2019 and their special Palmtag Pinot Noir available for Club members only; as we enjoyed our Pinot noir Ed's group arrived on another ATV and we had a big fun chat in this very secluded location, on a private tasting, what a treat ! then we hooped on the ATV again climbed some hills reached the highs point of the vineyard overviewing most of the vineyard, the hills surround us, the terraces in our side and the mountains from a far. This ATV tour was the highlight of the visit for me , this was new experience for me for wine tasting and how easy it was to talk to everyone at vineyard and being able to interact with the owners, the wine maker Cory, everyone here are just so pleasant and easy to talk and make wine tasting exciting and more fun. suggestion: To make most of the long drive try the ATV tasting if you think you like that kind of thing, it was definitely new experiences for me for wine tasting and I will do it again. For conclusion : These are very good and generous people who own and run this vineyard; I will be back with my friends and I will do the ATV tasting again. Thank you Christina, Ed, Cory, and the ladies who poor our wine during our visit. I had the most amazing time at your vineyard. And I am hopping to have the same experiences when I come back with my friends.

Yelp
Amazing winery! I became a member and I have to say their whites are delicious . The wine prices are not bad and the outdoor area was lovely. Dog friendly too!

Yelp
Don't miss an opportunity to visit this gem of a winery! What a great, gorgeous place to pass a perfect afternoon with friends and family. Every one of the five pours were delicious, from the beautifully balanced Pinot Grigio to the surprisingly full bodied Pinot noir. Next visit I hope to try cabs and/or zins! Server DRE was the consummate pro; she knows her wines, she knows the winery's history, and she must enjoy her work because we did keep her a bit late...her fault for being so engaging! Also a SHOUT OUT TO KIM in the office for going above and beyond retrieving my phone, which I managed to leave behind. Now what possibly could have made me so forgetful?

Yelp
Teresa was amazing. Loved the Rose of Pinot and Pinot Nioir. Thank you so much for an amazing tasting experience. Thank you so much!!!

Yelp
Beautiful setting, felt so peaceful. Only thing to make it better: If we could have had our dog!

Yelp
I don't usually write a negative review, but I feel compelled to share a very unpleasant visit to this winery. My husband and I were visiting a neighboring winery and decided that since it was such a lovely day that we would extend it by tasting at the beautiful Eden Rift winery. We had our one-year-old Cocker Spaniel with us who is well behaved and is a lover of people and other dogs. We have visited Eden Rift many times since it was purchased from the previous owner and have enjoyed the selection of wines and beautiful grounds. We have always seen other dogs at the winery and knew that it was "dog friendly." Upon our arrival, we had just started walking up to the house with our dog on his leash and we were met by a large Doberman. The two dogs started to sniff each other in greeting but suddenly the Doberman started barking and attacked our dog much to our horrification. Our dog's nose was injured and drew blood from the attack. A couple of the winery staff came out to address the issue and took the Doberman away. One of the staff told us that the winery "was not dog friendly" after I said that we believed that the winery approved of dogs. This woman said that they used to be but was changed 6 months ago and that it was stated on the website. They didn't seem very upset by the incident nor customer focused on what transpired. We left immediately but were understandably shaken up by the event. Our pup was fine and didn't seem to be distressed but his parents were. Driving home, I looked up Eden Rift's website and could not find any mention about the winery's dog policy (there isn't one). I even Googled the question "is Eden Rift Vineyards pet friendly?" which displayed the answer "Yes, dogs are allowed here". Clearly, we were given the brush off by their staff and suspect that the Doberman was a pet of one of the staff and not their typical winery dog. The aggression that this dog displayed to our dog is not appropriate especially in a public setting like a winery which is visited by adults and children. BTW, I wrote an email to the winery at the time of the event but never received a response. If you plan to visit this winery, please be aware that there may be less than "friendly" dogs there.

Yelp
A beautiful winery that I definitely recommend ANYONE checking out! The scenery here is truly beautiful and the staff who run Eden Rift are extremely kind and welcoming. They have a good variety of wine also which is good. I'm not the biggest wine person but found all of the wines I tried to be pretty tasty. This place is a home run, you should definitely check it out if you are fine with driving a bit into Hollister from wherever you are at!

Yelp
Been meaning to go out here for months and finally did last week! We did the ATV tasting tour and holy cow what a phenomenal experience! Our guide Amy was super friendly and very knowledgeable. She gave us the history of the vineyard. I feel like we all walked away learning something new. The property is stunning! What a hidden gem! Wines were delicious! Definitely a must try!

Yelp
A five star review simply for the beautiful landscape. What a perfect spot to have a glass of wine and share a life or cry. The flight I did not have enough reds in the line up but nonetheless I enjoyed my tastes and scenery.

Yelp
A lovely place for some excellent wine and interesting local wine history. The location is perfect for wine tasting. You're in a natural amphitheater of vineyards in a mountain valley next to a historic house with plenty of room to spread out and two friendly vineyard dogs. Although I can see it getting very hot on certain days, when we visited the temperate was perfect. The standouts on the wine side were the Rose', Chardonnay, and single-block Pinot Noir. Everything was just a bit different from what we're used to in Monterey County--in a good way. The tasting was also conducted at a more relaxed pace than many other wineries that seem more interested in hurrying people through, which was really nice given the beautiful setting. Sarah was fantastic--supremely knowledgeable, willing to share personal tastes, and enthusiastic about the vineyard and wine. The vineyard itself has an interesting history and the whole Cienega Valley seems like a bit of a hidden gem for wines. Definitely worth a detour from the 101 and we'll look forward to a return visit.

Janine M.

Yelp
We spent a lovely afternoon tasting great wine in a beautiful setting. Highly recommend as a sweet spot to sit and enjoy friends and family surrounded by oak trees, Palm trees and vineyards.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't written a review for this winery but I was here with the hubs before the pandemic and had a wonderful tasting experience. The staff are really friendly and we learned a lot about the grapes the wine comes from and how they got their name. I enjoyed everything we tasted and actually went home with a bottle of each. This is one of my favorite wineries, it's beautiful and unpretentious with really great wines. I like the pinot and pinot rose more than anything I've tried in Napa. Which reminds me, I'm running low on my stock of reds so it might be time for a visit. They're opening for outdoor tastings so I highly recommend trying them out.

Charlotte R.

Yelp
Visited the winery today and the service was very impersonal. I felt like the employees had a rehearsed speech they gave when pouring the wine and did not care about making the visitors comfortable. We had three different people pouring our tastings and had to ask twice for our next tasting. The scenery is beautiful and the wine wonderful but the personal interaction was very lacking

N N.

Yelp
This winery is simply entrancing. From the house to the staff to the wine itself, they embody what a winery should look and feel like. Their vineyards dominate the landscape while tasting and their tasting grounds are subtle and inviting. And to finish it off, their Pinots are savory and bountiful. I absolutely loved my entire experience and will most certainly visit again and again. Also, thank you, Theresa, for being an amazing hostess! Jack.

Yelp
I hate leaving less-than-totally-perfect reviews when I'm the first one to yelp about a place unless they suck, and Eden Rift definitely didn't by any means suck... but at the same time, if a winery is charging $15 per a tasting, I'm going to hold that winery to a higher standard. This winery charged $15 for a tasting, and only had 5 wines to try. Of them, I thought the sauvignon blanc was excellent (indeed, thought that enough that I bought a bottle even though it was $25 and even though the tasting fee wasn't waived or discounted at all for having bought it - it was a legitimately excellent sauv blanc), I thought their pinot noir was also excellent but not necessarily $48 excellent, and thought the other three were just "good". I will say the people there were super friendly (even to the extent that when my dad, with whom I was sharing one tasting, bogarted most of that pinot noir and our pourer noticed the look on my face, she poured us another taste of it without even asking if I wanted one - thanks! I did!), and it was a nice chill place to try some wine, just as much as when it was Pietra Santa. And to be fair, I can't really properly compare them to Pietra Santa, since totally by coincidence, the only time I checked out Pietra Santa was when they were literally about to close, so they were practically giving everything away, and of *course* a winery that isn't in the middle of a liquidation sale isn't going to be as awesome as one that is, that's just basic logic. But still. I enjoyed the wine here well enough, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to check it out again if I were in the area, for a $15 tasting fee and bottles that are mostly more than I would want to pay for them.

Yelp
Ended up here totally unplanned. They welcomed us from the very beginning.. starting with the sweetest greeting from the owners dog and cat. Beautiful estate, tasty wine. So many beautiful places to relax while wine tasting. I can't wait to come back!! This is a MUST if you are stopping in the area!!

Kristy L.

Yelp
Wow, I love this place and I can't wait to go back. The wines were amazing and they had a great variety so there's something for everyone. Sarah served us and she was the best! She was knowledgeable and energetic and really made sure each table was having a good time and being accommodated properly. She told us the reasoning behind why their beautiful labels look the way that they do and it just shows how thoughtful the owners and wine makers are! Such a great experience even during COVID times they were safe and kind and following the rules! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
On August 16th Eden rift had a tasting table at the laguna seca raceway for the historic event in Monterey. I gave 5 stars for the excellent service of an employee by the name of Chet. He was incredibly friendly and very fun to talk with. As they were packing up their table he left us almost half a bottle of their wonderful rosè and even purchased my boyfriend an old fashion before he left. Eden rift has a really great employee on their hands and we will absolutely be visiting this winery. Thanks for the great experience Chet!

Megan C.

Yelp
What a great experience. Came on Cino De Mayo so it was pretty empty however the wine was amazing and the service superior. We sat at a table outdoors under an umbrella and truly enjoyed ourselves. You are allowed to in food to enjoy with your tasting.

Yelp
This was the first time I had been to this winery location since it has changed from Pietra Santa to Eden Rift, and let me tell you... WOW! So impressed with the wines, the labels, the grounds, the staff, just wow. Sarah helped us with our tasting and I cannot say enough good things. She was so knowledgeable about the wines and the surrounding area which, surprisingly, is more than what you get from tasting room staff at most wineries. It is so worth the trek from the Bay Area to this "East of Eden" location, I HIGHLY recommend.

Yelp
Omg this place is amazing . No joke we end up here because another winery recommend us . Let me tell you the staff and the pet friendly / animal lovers well love this place

Yelp
We visited Eden rift for a very special occasion in December 2018, and we can't wait to go back. Mike helped plan and host an unforgettable tasting, lunch and tour of this beautiful property. He and the entire team at Eden Rift were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to make our experience unforgettable. This is a wonderful place to visit if you're looking for a great winery experience in the Hollister area.

Jeremy D.

Yelp
Eden Rift is a gorgeous winery with tasty wines that are sure to please any palette. The people who work here are so friendly and you can tell they are passionate about wine. I love Eden Rift!

Chelsea L.

Yelp
Good wine and even better service. This winery is located in a beautiful valley and the tasting is on the front porch of a beautiful home. It is so relaxing and inviting. Members can bring five additional guests to taste for free and I promise the experience was worth it. Thank you Veronica for your hospitality! Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys good wine and sweet dogs.

Yelp
Awesome wines, loved the relaxing atmosphere. Their tasting room is fun, lots of history about Hollister and their winery. It's a beautiful place and everyone was so nice. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our first visit here and we were happy to become a member, easily some of the best Pinot noir we've ever had and the Pinot Gris is also off the charts delicious!
