The 7 Best Hostels in Edinburgh (Updated 2025)

"Set in a series of historic buildings near both the Old Town and the train station, Edinburgh Backpackers is centrally located, homey, and quiet with a lived‑in, no‑frills vibe (dated décor and old wooden floors). It isn’t particularly social, but everything is clean and comfortable; rooms are simple and sometimes small, there’s no elevator due to the historic building, and beds have decent mattresses even though there are no curtains (lockers are provided). There’s a big kitchen and a variety of room types including single private rooms, female‑only dorms, and a cozy penthouse suite, making it a cheap, quiet option in a great location." - Matthew Kepnes

Absolutely great experience. Great fellow backpackers, very friendly staff, prime location, clean rooms and bedding. Overall I highly recommend staying here if you are planning to visit Edinburgh. Love this city and its people. My experience has been great. That wouldn’t have been possible without the peace of mind from having my accommodation taken care of. I’ll be back here again.

Stayed one night in mixed dorm, luckily , assigned with most female travellers. Bunk Beds are too low , not fit even for sitting in the lower bed. Could use kitchen , but kitchen is small, almost always full of people , mostly staffs, staff was a bit rude , in trying to get us disciplined using kitchen . ( we are welll aware of the kitchen rules and in the process to strictly follow ) Otherwise, perfect location , good heating system , clean toilets .

One of the cleanest and safest hostels I've stayed at and I've stayed at a lot of hostels. Kind and helpful staff. Great laundry service. Excellent showers. The best part is the location, just off the High Street in the old town, within easy walking distance of many major sites. All in all a great place to stay. Thank you!

I’m staying at a three person private room, really great location (except for a lot of stairs coming up from the train station) and no lift inside, but the room is huge, the toilets are clean and decor is nice. Very comfy, could stay a few more days. Highly recommend.

I stayed in the 8-bed mixed dorm as a female traveler. Pros 1. Great location, just next to the Royal Mile. 2. Room was fairly clean, and every bed had its own power socket. Cons 1. My room was on the 4th floor, but there were no toilets or showers for women on that floor. I had to go down to the 3rd floor every time, which was very inconvenient. 2. The luggage storage policy is messy and unreasonable. Luggage storage was free at check-in, but charged after check-out, which I could accept since it was mentioned on the website. However, the actual charges were inconsistent. The website clearly says £3, but the staff at reception told me it was £3 cash or £3.50 by card. I didn’t have cash, so I had no choice but to pay more. Then she added that it was “per item.” I had two small bags and was charged £7, while another guest with a much larger 20L+ backpack was charged as just one item. Completely unfair. When I asked for a refund so I could use the lockers outside instead, the staff member rudely refused. For comparison, small lockers at the train station cost only £5 for six hours — cheaper and more reasonable. Avoid storing your luggage here. Overall: The only good thing about this hostel is the location. Everything else was disappointing, especially the rude attitude of the female staff member in the morning.

We had a great stay at Edinburgh Backpackers Hostel and honestly can’t understand the negative reviews – perhaps it’s because we were in one of the other buildings. We stayed in a private double room with a shared bathroom and kitchen, and it was surprisingly spacious, very clean, and above all, quiet – perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring the city. The shared spaces were also clean and well-equipped – we didn’t miss a thing. We arrived late at night and were greeted very warmly. The staff was friendly and helpful throughout our stay. One big plus: after checking out, we still had some time before our train, and storing our luggage was no problem at all. The location is absolutely fantastic – I couldn’t have imagined a better place to stay during our time in Edinburgh. All in all, everything was great and I can only recommend it!

Great hostel. Everyone was friendly (the staff and all the other guests). The beds and showers were nice and clean and the room comfortable to be in. The hostel is located right where you'd want to be, near the train station and the old town. This means, coming back during the day to grab a jacket or drop some souvenirs is nice and easy

We stayed in a private room, but it was extremely cramped. The bathroom was the worst I’ve ever seen; the doors didn’t close properly, it felt incredibly claustrophobic, the flush tank took an eternity to fill and didn’t work properly, and the sink was placed in such an awkward corner that you couldn’t even fill a water bottle. All I can say is that we just survived.
