Ask a Local: Literary Edinburgh According to Poet Marcas Mac an Tauineir | Condé Nast Traveler

"At the nexus where the Grassmarket elides into Fountainbridge, I count Edinburgh Books among three of the city's best second-hand bookshops — places that feel like an "Aladdin's cave," where you never know what you're going to find." - Charlie Hobbs

An absolute joy of a bookshop with paperbacks and hardbacks front to back and ceiling to floor. There are antique books, classic books, modern books and modern classics ranging in price from highly affordable to prices you'd expect from masterpieces. If you love books this shop is a serious must. Be prepared to spend a very long time checking out the categories and titles. It's a joy.

The old book collection is pretty complete, and the books are still in great shape. The prices are fair, too. The guy who runs the shop (or maybe owns it) is super friendly. Oh, and there’s a 10% discount for students—he said it’s so they can chill out from school, homework, or exams. Really nice of him!

Unique atmosphere and huge selection of books. I occasionally go in search of history hardback first editions or interesting, fusty-smelling old editions and am never disappointed.

I've been to this bookshop twice on my visits to Edinburgh and both times the collection was great, I find it to be the most affordable secondhand bookshop in the city (I went to nearly a dozen) and the owner is super friendly. Would go back every time I'm here. I love the Scottish room and found a novel by now largely forgotten Scottish woman novelist Mary Brunton. Also bought their tote as well which was quite fairly priced.

These kinds of bookshops are my dream - the ones where you can wander around for as long as you like, until your eye falls on a lone copy of a book you've never heard of before but you know you just HAVE to own. I spent a happy half hour in here during a three day visit to Edinburgh and left with three books to add to my frankly ridiculous collection. The staff were wonderful, and visiting was a real highlight of my trip - so glad my friend recommended it.
