18 Weird, Wondrous Places for Wine-Lovers Around the Globe

"The key to drinking and diving is to make sure the diving comes first. It’s an order of operations that Edivo Vina has perfected. They’re Croatia’s first and only underwater winery, and if you want your very own hand-selected, barnacle-encrusted, underwater-aged bottle of vino, you’re going to have to dive for it. The alternative winery located in Croatia’s Peljesac peninsula is the brainchild of Edi Bajurin, who—it may not surprise you—combined his two favorite hobbies to create one unexpected venture. He speculated that aging wines at 20 meters (72 feet) underwater would keep them at a more constant temperature than on land and that the silence on the sea floor would impart his wines with a measurably smoother taste.  Years of experimentation incurring no shortage of salty wine and perhaps a few drunken fish taught Bajurin that ordinary corks couldn’t keep the wine from the sea and vice versa. He began coating his corks in two layers of wax and aging the bottles in clay amphorae, which he submerges upside-down in custom-built cages that prevent thirsty divers from pilfering his product. As such, each bottle of Edivo Vina’s “Navis Mysterium” (from the red plavac mali grape that grows along the Dalmatian coast) emerges from its 18-to-24-month aging stint with a distinct pinewood aroma and the amphorae uniquely coated in seashells and barnacles. While claims of sea-floor quietude translating into smoother wine lack scientific backing, Navis Mysterium consistently emerges with particularly fruity and spicy notes.  If diving’s not for you, cozy up at the wine bar, on land. Let your friends get wet. It’s still the same wine." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Exceptional experience and a privilage to taste the "underwater aged wine in amphoras". The cozy bar-restaurant is attracttive as well as the cellar which is also a small wine museum. The story about aging wines is very gives the drink another dimension with a touch of mistery. The tasting providedy by Željka was very professional, atentive, interesting. All of the wines are really good, top quality from the peninsula. The same goes for the pairing food - prosuto, cheese, sardins, shrimps, olives.... Recomanded weather for tasting or just admireing cozy restaurant and video spot about unique wines. Great oportunity for an awesome souvenir as well....

Edvino Wine Bar: A Hidden Gem for Wine Lovers Near Dubrovnik If you're exploring southern Croatia and wondering where to enjoy a refined glass of wine near Dubrovnik, Edvino Wine Bar is an outstanding choice. Located just about an hour from Dubrovnik, this wine bar offers one of the most authentic and carefully curated wine experiences in the region. From the moment you arrive, the welcoming atmosphere and elegant interior make it easy to relax. The staff is genuinely passionate about wine and happy to guide you through their excellent selection of Croatian and international labels. I discovered some remarkable local wines that I had never tried before, each served at the perfect temperature and beautifully presented. The quality of the wine was complemented by thoughtfully prepared appetizers, enhancing the experience without overshadowing the wine itself. Whether you're a wine connoisseur or simply looking for a quiet and charming place to enjoy a drink, Edvino Wine Bar is absolutely worth a visit. A must-stop destination for anyone searching for top wine bars near Dubrovnik or best places to drink wine in Croatia.

Good winery to try if you are driving by it. Great for a wine tasting, but I’m not sold on that the underwater aging actually makes the wine taste better. It’s neat to age the wines underwater like they do, but the wines are priced for that not on the actual quality. Im glad I went, don’t get me wrong, but I would not go out of my way to buy the wine, much less the amphora that is stored underwater. The staff was great though, and knowledgeable of the wine. They were great representatives of the winery.

I’ve had this experience on my bucket list for 10 years and it did not disappoint. My fiancé became dive certified so we could dive on our honeymoon. My now husband and I shared this experience on Day 3 of our marriage and it was just amazing. The staff during the dive and the wine tasting were so friendly and knowledgeable and shared fun stories of their trials and experiments of making this experience a reality. 100000/10 recommend.

Went there on a tour. Very interesting. The store their wines under water and some in a ceramic vase. Very cool. Really wanted the ceramic wine but they don't ship to Virginia in the US. Oysters were good as well.

A lovely unexpected stop. I loved the wine and my husband enjoyed the way the wine is made…under the sea! Divers down deliciousness. If you get the chance do the tasting that includes the clay vessels. Best wine I have ever had in my mouth.

Amazing experience! If you are scuba certified you need to do this! I booked this for my husband and I and we hadn’t been diving for a few years. Anto was great and very understanding. He made it low stress. It was a private dive with just the 3 of us and then a private wine tasting. Everyone was so nice and Nevena made sure we didn’t get our tasting interrupted by the 50 person tour which was so nice! 100/10 would recommend to everyone!

Nevena provided the most incredible experience. The wines were amazing. If you are scuba certified, do the wine tour underwater.
