We visited the Edmonton Zoo on Easter Sunday and, unfortunately, had a very disappointing experience. The zoo closed at 4 PM, but we arrived shortly after 2 PM and were not informed that there was only 1.5 hours left to explore. With kids, this made it nearly impossible to see everything.
What was most upsetting is that there were barely any animals to see. One elephant, a lonely and sad-looking monkey, a few goats, one pig, a couple of zebras, and maybe—if you’re lucky—one lynx and a house cat. Most of the enclosures were empty, and inside the buildings, there was often only one small animal per large cage, if any at all. Compared to our visit five years ago, it’s clear things have really gone downhill.
The overall condition of the zoo was also disappointing. Dirty glass on the sea animal enclosures made it hard to see anything, and leftover gravel from the snow created slipping hazards for the kids. The entire space felt neglected and uninspired.
It’s heartbreaking to see so little care being put into a place meant to inspire love for animals. I truly hope the city finds someone passionate to invest in improving the zoo—not only by bringing in more animals, but also by creating better, more natural environments where animals can thrive and even reproduce.
Compared to the Calgary Zoo, which always delivers a “wow” experience with its variety, thoughtful design, and visible care for the animals, Edmonton’s zoo falls sadly short.
Would not recommend visiting in its current state. Save your money and your time.
