Seclusion, Surf, and Shrimp on Oahu's North Shore

"Standing at Ehukai Beach I witnessed the Banzai Pipeline's legendary reef break—famous for huge, barrel-shaped winter waves that host the final event of Vans Triple Crown of Surfing—though outside of winter the spot often becomes a wide, golden beach with tranquil aquamarine seas." - Gina DeCaprio Vercesi Gina DeCaprio Vercesi Gina DeCaprio Vercesi is a New York-based writer with a passion for adventure, history, and conservation. Google
Best beach on the whole North Shore. Very easy to park every single time we passed it. We stopped here 3 separate times during our weeklong trip, so that should say everything. We saw 3 different beaches too. 1st - huge waves, tons of surfers, 2nd - huge waves, one surfer, 3rd at sunset (great views) - incredible atmosphere with medium waves and everyone from birth to death out there on a surfboard. Obviously whole families enjoying the wide beach. If you're driving through, stop by.

Google
Beautiful park to spend time by the ocean with your family. Awesome view, fun in the waves. Showers to wash off.

Don’t miss this place if you are on the North Shore of Oahu from November thru February! If you are lucky you will see the massive waves at this park which is also known as the Bonzai Pipeline. There are lots of surfers riding these big waves. You can check the wave forecast. Some days the waves are bigger than other days. You can sit in the sand and watch the surfers. There are areas with shade too. There are bathrooms and picnic tables. No swimming unless you are an expert surfers. It is too dangerous. But the view is like nothing you have ever seen before. Parking can be a problem. The small parking lot for this Park fills up quickly. In the morning it is easier to find a parking spot. Between 8AM and 10AM. Do not miss this place if you are in the area in the wintertime.

Google
There is plenty of parking mid-morning on weekdays. It is one of the best beaches, in my opinion.

Google
It’s a stunning place, just stunning, we went while pipe was on so watched that really and didn’t get to explore that much. Beautiful water, beautiful sand, just be careful if swimming as you could see that it rips hard!

Google
We haven't visited the North shore in years there are nice beaches with less tourists makes a nice day trip

Beautiful beach with parking. Perfect for surfers and walkers.

I visited here with my family and it was amazing!! The waves were huge and the beach was full of cool shells. Definitely a great spot to watch the sunset, too!!

Yelp
On the North Shore of Oahu are some of the most beautiful beaches. We hiked the Ehukai pillboxes across the street (near the Sunset Elementary school parking lot) and decided to just come across the street to hit the beach. My go to beach in this area is Ke Iki's, but decided to try it out here because of the proximity. We pulled into the parking lot and there were plenty of spots. To relax on the shore, this was not the most ideal beach. You've got a big downward slope to get from the parking lot to the sand, but then the sand slopes all the way up in front of the water. Because of that, from most of the shore, you can't actually see the water, because of the slope of the sand. I'd never seen something like this before and I've grown up in Hawaii! We had to hike up a small hill to layout at the top of the sand to watch the water, but then the waves would hit and flood the area. It might've been the way the tide was at the time, but overall, I'm bummed I didn't stick with Ke Iki's where the shore is a lot more flat leaving plenty of space to just lay out and enjoy. As always, respect the ocean. I saw a lot of tourists coming and turning their backs to the waves. They aren't to be messed with up here! Bathroom by the parking lot with showers to clean off from the sand.

Yelp
Sightseeing in Haleiwa, Oahu... My friends from New Jersey wanted to visit the North Shore. I thought that they meant Haleiwa Town. No. They wanted to see the Big Waves at the beach. Uh... ok... that's not my strong point, but I'll try and find something. Ehukai Beach has some free parking, restrooms, and outdoor shower. It's a nice place to view the waves and surfing action. I wouldn't swim here.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice beach, you could see the big waves, and surfing, so exciting! The view is great, lots of space, not crowded at all!

Yelp
Excellent place to watch the waves and surfers. We stopped here in January so the waves were high and numerous surfers were out. At the time of our visit, they were setting up the area for the Billabong Pro Pipeline surfing tournament. Parking is available at the park, however, it is limited and snug. The parking lot is long, but narrow making it difficult to navigate around cars, people, and chickens. Luckily we found a parking spot and walked the short distance to the beach. The water was too dangerous for us to swim. From shore we enjoyed watching the surfers and waves. The surfers were impressing and the waves are strong and persistent. Overall, we enjoyed our visit and recommend this beach to others!

Yelp
Amazing beach. Must go for sure! North shores are very pretty and the waters and swells with all the surfers are something you don't see everyday! Turtle Bay beach is very pretty as well.
google avatar

Dani S.

Yelp
Pipeline masters! This place boosts some of the pipeline waves for surfing and is home to the annual competition. I had the fortune of watching this spectacular event this year and watched Kelly Slater and the best pro surfers in the world slay this wave! There is a large bathroom in the park and it does flush. Parking is terrible during the surf competition but street parking is available. There are lots of food trucks to choose from. The beach is beautiful. I highly recommend just hanging out here. Maybe you might catch JJ Florence sneaking in a wave.

Yelp
I post this review with this location but I write about Secret Beach which you can find on the IG locations but not here.... I have been to Oaho twice and my first visit was in August 2015. To avoid a birthday celebration like the year before, I decided to take off for a week by myself to my dream destination. I met some locals and that's all you need when you travel as you get the no-tour-costs secret spots. My friend took me to Turtle Bay resort for lunch. After we drove away and we went snorkeling on a beach with TONS of enormous turtles and NO HUMANS around. It's one of my most amazing memories. At one point I was snorkeling surrounded by 4 turtles at least my size. It resulted in some funny go pro footage as I got scared:) I need to look on my external memory drive for more footage of this but this was just amazing, I will always remember this. I didn't go back on my second trip to Oahu in November 2017 as then we went snorkeling looking for dolphins.

Yelp
I was thinking it's pretty dope there's a surf channel . I thought it was cool every day they were filming surfers . Now you have to remember we came during a storm a week before Christmas. It was raining but it wasn't exactly Cold weather. It was the perfect 70 to 85° with some sprinkles. OK maybe there was a Little flash flood here and there but that was in the beginning of the week. I was the first to arrive out of a group of 10 of my friends from Los Angeles. Which was kind of nice because if we all Followed each other in four different cars , parking would've been a nightmare ! I looked around and I saw School across the street and what looked like a regular park. I was excited to notice wild chickens bathrooms and shower . After a couple steps in to the park I realize there was a lifeguard tower. On my way to the lifeguard tower A man walks up to me. Aloha my kids are selling pizza in the parking lot. I made them a pizza oven on a golf cart . The pizza has hemp in it! Where are you from? I'm from LA. Do you know if LA has hemp in their pizza? I'm not sure but I'd love to try it out . Hey do you want to hear a joke? Sure! Man starts talking to God and says what is $1 million to you God? God replied $1 million is like one penny to me. What is 1 million years to you? 1 million years to me is like one minute to me . The man stops and thinks for a minute. God do you think I can have one penny? God replies sure give me a minute. Ha ! Then the pizza father just walked away. That was cool ! Then I continued on towards the lifeguard tower just passed a couple trees there it is paradise!! This is a total local spot. I can put money down that we were the only tourist and that's just because my best friend grew up here. You can tell this is a secret spot. You'll be glad to know that after we sat down a bunch of people started sitting by us because of my 90s hip-hop playlist I worked so hard on ! It totally passed the vibe check ! There is definitely clouds here in there but the surf was good . I could see the towers where they film . I can see two different groups of male and female surfers . Definitely some pros surfing going on here. We spent the day there and we watched the sunset. You think that would mean it's time to leave but the weather was still nice. Until it started to sprinkle and then we finally decided to pack it up but an excellent day at the beach was had . So grateful for all the blessings!

Yelp
Love this beach park in North Shore! The sand is soft on the feet... clear blue green water... not a lot of traffic here! I'd definitely some back here!!
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
Great and not too populated (at least when I went) beach! Sitting under the palm tree with the only shade there really makes me want to buy a big beach Umbrella! So if you have it you should bring it ! There was big waves crashing and a bunch of surfers in the water. Pretty blue and clear water ! Great place to sit back and enjoy. I liked hearing music and watching the surfers do there thing. I did go in and it was slightly cold when I went In but not California cold at least! I got a parking right away but on busier days you may run into trouble since there isn't a parking lot just on the side of the road parking. Will need to bring my husband a long the water is great to get in the waves made it fun maybe next time a boogie board is what I'll start off !
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic place to come and watch the surfers or surf yourself if you're up for it. Pro tip - this wave is not for anyone learning to surf. It's also not a great place to swim unless you are a very strong swimmer.
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
Wow this is a beautiful soft sand beach with Crystal blue waters. Surf when we went was very low and water was great for swimming. Parking is a little hit and miss, but as we came later in the day, we find a spot. There was a lifeguard on duty. One of our favorite beaches!

Yelp
Winter visit January 4, 2016 Howzit! We briefly stopped at this beach located in the North Shore of Oahu and was our first stop on the east end. The beach was closed to the public during winter season except for some surfers braving the big waves. There were warning signs up and the beach area was roped off in red cautioning the public that there are strong currents and one could be swept away from shore and could drown. Also, a sign that says beware of dangerous shore breaks, these are waves that break in shallow water and can seriously injure someone even in small surf. I was mesmerized just by watching the waves that can reach as high as 30+ feet, wow! just fascinating to watch. It is a beautiful beach but during this winter season the beach is a world-famous surfing spot, a surfer's paradise! I understand that it is home to internationally known surfing contests? The beach was crowded of just spectators. No one could be in the water and people were just watching the tall waves and the big-wave surfers in action. Parking was a little difficult to find but we were able to locate a spot and take pictures and videos. Wished I was able to witness the sunset but we still had the rest of our around-the-island tour to finish... would love to come back during the summertime when the waves are calmer and do some snorkeling and witness one of the best sunsets in Hawaii. For now... Aloha! Review #0443

Yelp
Okay. My favorite way to enjoy this beach is first thing in the morning or at the end of the day. When NOBODY is out yet except the surfers that deserve to be. A box of HOT malasadas (donuts) from Penny's malasadas, a coffee from Sunrise Shack, and nobody to bug me...the perfect hour. Truly...the perfect hour. If you sit just right, you see nothing but sea and sky.

Yelp
B-E-A-utiful! Sunset beach is one of my favorite beaches on Oahu. The water is usually nice and clear and the sand is clean and fine. There aren't really any shaded areas on the beach so if you don't like prolonged periods in the sun, this may not be the beach for you. This beach is so gorgeous that sometimes even monk seals will pay visits here. You can find them resting on the sand. This beach is also one of the preferred beaches for professional surf events like the Triple Crown of Surfing. There are also showers and restrooms across the street from the beach. They're pretty clean and well-maintained for beach facilities. The only thing that may be a problem here is the parking, especially when the surf's up. There's a strip of parking stalls along Kamehameha Highway but they fill up pretty quickly. Nonetheless, Sunset Beach is one of my regular stops on the North Shore and will be for many years to come.

Yelp
Perfect beach to take a nap! This was our favorite beach from our May 2012 vacation. We tried to go to Waimea Bay a couple times, but we could never find parking! (in the parking lot or on the street) so we always ended up at Sunset Beach which is only approximately 3 miles away. We found parking easily every time! It's also not very far from all the shrimp trucks. So after a trip to Giovanni's we would come here to relax. I would just lay out in the sun for like 1.5 - 2 hours (remember to reapply sunblock!). The water was pretty calm and my husband did some swimming and even got his snorkel gear out. He said he was able to spot a lot of fish - even the Unicorn fish, some striped ones and fish with a beak. Sometimes the clouds start rolling over and one time it even starting POURING rain then when we just got back to the car it would stop raining and be sunny again. That's Hawaiian weather for you! The last time we were here, it was TOO WINDY. There was a sand storm and the sand actually HURT! Sand was all stuck in my scalp, in my ear, and all over my face. HAHAH. So we just packed up and got some shave ice instead. Overall, depending on weather conditions -Sunset Beach is perfect for... NAPPING, SUNBATHING, SWIMMING, SNORKELING, SURFING

Yelp
This beach is decent for swimming compared to many of the other beaches leading up to the northern most point on Kamehameha. The sand isn't as steep and rocky so you have a fighting chance of surviving the surf. Don't get me wrong, the tide is still very strong but I think if you're not a good swimmer you have a better chance of getting out of the water and/or your kids have less of a chance of getting swept away. There was also a lot of open beach with not a whole bunch of people on it. I guess many of the others stop further down the road and don't venture up this far but honestly I didn't think that any of the beaches on the north shore were crowded by any means. What I also found awesome is that there appeared to be a lot of good parking with a clear unobstructed view of the sunset. I guess that may be where the beach might get it's name but I don't know. My sister and I raced all the way up here to get a good view of the sun setting since the clouds kind of messed that up down by Shark's Cove. There were several families out there with kids build castles and carrying on and such so check this beach out. One thing I will say is that the parking spots are very close to the highway so it can be a real problem trying to back up out onto Kamehameha and get the heck out of Dodge as it can be really busy.

Yelp
Great beach! We spend a lot of time here both in high surf season and low surf season. A little pleasure for us all

Yelp
Ehukai Beach is also known as Pipe Line. The people who come out to the North Shore on any given weekend is Amazing. Too see the masses who turned out for the Billabong Pipe Masters was like Wow! We were lined up and packed out for miles along the coastline. This is really a beautiful beach with magnificent waves. Today was like a no other...food, family, friends, sun and surfing. The rain held out and so did we. See Ya Soon at Pipeline.
google avatar

Alisha R.

Yelp
Beautiful beach but be prepared for a hike! It's no joke and my calves were burning. Down a steep hill into a valley and up another hill to the beach! Thankfully made it back up the sand but the views were gorgeous.
google avatar

Nellie F.

Yelp
It's appropriately named as you can see some breathtaking sunsets from here. The sand is not the best though, it gets EVERYWHERE and is difficult to get off when it's wet. There can also be a lot of debris from nearby trees and such especially after bad weather. If you're not a good swimmer, I'd stay out of the water here as the current and waves can be very strong. I've been swept clear off my feet by the receding water after a wave broke on the shore. I do love sunset to just lay out and enjoy the surroundings. I can't speak on the actual surf as I'm not a surfer, but I do love watching people surf. They're so fearless in the water and it's just so beautiful.
google avatar

Andi T.

Yelp
This beach is awesome! I come here every Sunday for sunset with my friends! The bathroom is just across the street along with additional parking and the water is warm and blue 99% of the time! If you come in winter you can water surfers dominate giant waves! A sight to see for sure!
google avatar

Sherill Y.

Yelp
07/07/14 (last visited) I must say the beach was beautiful and it was not too crowded like Waikiki beach. The water was crystal clear and during the summer the surf is not too rough for kids to swim. There are some trees to get shade but it is not too comfortable so maybe a big beach umbrella would be handy. This beach has a long walk to the water. Additionally, the beach is large. Spacious and underpopulated. When we went there were no waves and it was very relaxing. Sunset Beach's wintertime waves are too intense for amateur surfers. But this is a great place to go if you want to be a spectator. The summer tide is mellow enough for swimming, and there's usually a lifeguard around to better ensure your safety. Scenery is amazing and all local food restaurants are close by! The view from this beach is breathtaking. Most of the parking in on the roadside. You must stop off here even if it's just to take some photos. Located on the North Shore of the island. One of Oahu's finest beaches for swimming and snorkeling during the summer when the water is usually calm. During the winter the beach is a world-famous surfing spot, home to internationally renowned surfing contests. This is when the waves can reach 30+ feet (9m), which makes Sunset Beach a real surfer's paradise.Sunset Beach is at the east end of this 2-mile long sandy shore. To the west are Ehukai Beach and Banzai Pipeline, two other popular surfing beaches. Sunset Beach is also known for its powerful rip current, called the Sunset Rip, that runs on every big swell. But even when the ocean appears calm, you'll notice the strong alongshore current in the nearshore waters. You enter the ocean in one area, but a few minutes later you find yourself a little bit further down the beach. Guessing from its name, Sunset Beach has nice sunset views, especially in the summer months. Sunset Beach Park Overview: * One of Oahu's finest beaches for swimming and snorkeling during the summer * One of world's most popular surfing beaches during the winter -several internationally renowned contests take place here (such as the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing) * Be aware of strong currents * Wonderful sunset views * Facilities (showers, restrooms) located across the street from the beach * Life guard on duty * Sunset * Free parking lot * Picnic bench tables * Food and drink

Yelp
We love this beach. So peaceful relative to other beaches. There's an area by the lifeguards where swimming and everything is okay. If you venture away from that area there are virtually no people on the beach. You almost feel like it's your own private oasis. Water is warm, sunsets there are beautiful, id recommend it to anyone looking for that serene piece of Hawaii!

Yelp
Lol lifeguard had to pull me out when I was pretty young. Beautiful beach. Looks exactly the way I remember it. From sand to the limited parking. Keep country, country! Great memories had and more to be made.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing sunset, hence the name Sunset Beach. Parking in and backing out can be tricky. Luckily we had a good Samaritan stop the oncoming cars so that we could back out. This seems like the go to beach for young drunk people. I'm not sure if drinking is allowed but we saw a few groups drinking. When it says no swimming it really means no swimming. We saw three young men get rescued by the lifeguards/firemen. We also witnessed a guy run out of a van yelling obscenities at his girlfriend for punching him in the mouth (allegedly). Be careful and enjoy the sunset!
google avatar

Esther K.

Yelp
This beach is absolutely GORGEOUS. I think this was my favourite place from our Oahu trip. The water along the entire North Shore is amazing to look at but this beach just enhanced it somehow. This place is also easy to spot along the Kamehameha Hwy and has actual parking spots! You'll know that you're there when you see a ton of cars and tour buses parked along the road ;) There were a lot of people here but I was still able to get pictures with only a few people in the background, yay. The water is beautiful and nice to hang out in, and the sand is also clean and nice to take a nap on (or just enjoy the view). Like others have mentioned, it's pretty close to the shrimp trucks so you can come before or after eating there. While I'm sure seeing the sunset here would be absolutely breathtaking, the beach is more than enjoyable during the day :D

Yelp
Ahhhh, Sunset Beach......be still my heart. If a person could have a crush on a location, my big crush would be Sunset Beach--swoon. What's not to love about this beach? - Beautiful sands - Amazingly gorgeous water with awesome surf - Crazy skilled surfers riding these gi-normous waves We spent the ENTIRE day at Sunset Beach. Me, the bf, my cous, and her hubby packed up the car with a cooler full of beers, bag of snackies, and a newly acquired package of Huli-Huli Chicken---now if that isn't a recipe for perfection, I don't know what is.... http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Xk8qRt4SOZUUjiaP8E_Slg?select=t4GMzwH-BCbZ1-6EiwDAMQ This particular day the surf was just amazing and the BEST thing of the day, we saw a TON of whales flipping around breaching in the horizon. And it may sound like I am exaggerating, but I would venture to say that we saw at least 10 whales surfacing around for over an hour. I was breathless. :) So take my advice, if you're headed to the North Shore, spend a good amount of time at this famed beach--you won't regret it. Don't forget to pack some goodies because you may never leave :) And don't forget to stay for the sunset!!! Note to y'all: This isn't a place for beginning surfers--the waves can get huge and will quickly whisk you away.

Yelp
World famous beach that even tour buses stop here. This is where they have the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the longest running and most prestigious surf series in the world. There wasn't a surfing competition that day but it didn't stop all the tourists in their Hawaiian shirts, birkenstocks, and telescopic dslr's snapping photos of surfers doing their thing on big waves that can get as high as 25 feet. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Xk8qRt4SOZUUjiaP8E_Slg?select=MgECR7hHAwY5dW8lMi338A) More a surfers and sunbathers paradise then for family lounging. They had no swimming signs up and for good reason. As soon as you get in, the water would get deep quick with a surprisingly strong undercurrent. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Xk8qRt4SOZUUjiaP8E_Slg?select=oqdEsZ7oCsA1rVHCtwcHtQ) Beautiful beach, didn't get to watch the sunset but there's definitely a different vibe to this quintessential north shore beach. Yelp
Worth the 1 hour drive away from the bustling tourist ridden Waikiki for the scenic and partially secluded beaches of the North Shore. Albeit rocky, the sands are mostly uninhibited except for a joyous smattering of animated visitors and local surfers out for their nonsensical adrenaline rush. That day happened to be the most gorgeous day with the beautiful golden sun beating furiously down my sweaty brow. The heat emanating from the beige sands warmed my oily slick body while the gentle crashing of the cerulean blue ocean waters soothed my free-spirited soul. If there is such a thing as heaven, I have arrived.
google avatar

Krysten I.

Yelp
What bad things are there to say about North Shore beaches? There is ample parking, plenty of sun, sand, waves and SHELLS. The beach itself is really wide too which makes it so that you don't have to sit so close to other people (like you have to do in waikiki). There are also public restrooms and showers at the beach park. What more can you ask for? I was recently here to watch the North Shore summer swim series. Since it is held so early in the morning (9am), traffic and parking weren't really an issue. It was actually kind of nice being at the beach so early and having the whole rest of the day to relax at the beach and start returning home before lunchtime.

Yelp
CLEAR WATER STRONG WAVES (4 stars) Did not attempt to swim at this beach. The waves were high and crushing. Although you could, just be prepared to get a good workout. Never had the opportunity to explore this side of the island until now. Straight COUNTRY!!! Beach wasn't as crowded but there are several tour buses that roll through and you will see huge groups of no speakies in hawaiian print shirts and cameras and peace sign posing. Don't mind them, just post up about 100 yards east or west from the parking area and you won't be bothered. Bring your own goodies!!! There is a mini fruit/farmers market stand about 1/2 mile down selling tropical fruit in bags for $2, fresh fried banana aka turon, and other goodies. Occasionally, the shave ice truck will appear. They sell chips but a 0.50 bag is charged at $1. Will I be back? Yes. Next time on low tide. Love laying out and watching the professional surfers ride the waves. HOT SURFER GUYS, omg!!!!!!!!!!! Hot!!!!!!!!!! Jaba approved. Until the next review.

Yelp
A beach to hang out and swim with the family. Current is pretty strong so non-swimmers watch out. Even the shallow parts it will pull you out to the deep ends. Otherwise, have fun and enjoy. My sister spoiled my significant other and I by taking us here in our first day. A beach with no rocks! All other beaches on Waikiki had rocks that can mess up your feet. Wear some beach water shoes and you may be ok! :) One of my favorite beach.

Yelp
I love this beach. It's all the way on north shore so there aren't too many tourist there. Classic beautiful beach. Have a picnic, play some football/volleyball, and just enjoy. P.S. It lives up to its name.

Yelp
#400 Got Surf? This IS where it's at. When you are here you are part of something real, organic, special. If you can't feel it....your in serious trouble. What an awesome thing to be able to stay in a house right on the sand of Sunset Beach for 9 days. Wake up in the morning at 6am and right outside your door there's over 20 Surfers in the water.......at sunset.....there's over 20 surfers in the water. When you get to see a couple days when the surf is offering 20' Swells you will feel the energy.....not from only the Sea, also from it's people. They are here and this is what they do. Of course the Sand is beautiful and the Sunsets here are magical.

Yelp
It's pretty beachy. February 2015, when Eddie *almost* went (a week before he did go!), my friends and I decided not to waste a perfectly good beach day just because Eddie failed us. We grabbed some coffee after sunrise and headed out to Sunset to enjoy the waves and maybe catch some surfers having fun. What a great day, lying on the beach watching the waves roll in, a gentle breeze and feeling the morning sun begin to warm the sand. Lucky we live HI, for sure! It's nice that there is a little parking lot but man does it get crowded fast and tough to maneuver with a large vehicle, I'd suggest flipping directions and parking along kam.

Yelp
I pulled off to the left when I saw a bunch of people parking. Funny thing is that since I was unsure which beach I was at, I looked at the view I had and looked down at the picture in my Oahu Revealed book and voila, same exact picture. Funny. I moseyed down and laid out for a good hour. Like Christine E, I ended up at this beach because I didn't want to deal with circling Waimea Bay Beach for parking. But I wanted to see Sunset Beach anyway, so it was a good experience. I like any beach in Hawaii where I can see my car from where I'm laying, and where I can see my stuff from where I'm swimming. This place had both. It wasn't really a lot, just park perpendicular to the road and you're good. Relaxing beach and big enough not to feel crowded. Good place for kids, if you have those, since the water was pretty calm (for September).

Yelp
There is nothing better than pulling your car up close to the sand, walking a few steps, and being right by the water. You don't have to hike across miles of hot sand or leave your car where you won't be able to see it. This beach can get busy- I mean Haleiwa in general gets busy...so go on a week day and if you're not on vacation then play hookie from work one afternoon or take the day off. Winter waves are crazy- just take your book and watch the boys surf. Or my favorite time of the year is during the summer where the nice waves somehow take a vacation and are no where to be found. It's like a completely different beach. The water is flat and calm and perfect for snorkeling.

Yelp
Sunset beach is truly beautiful, and definitely is the epitome of "Surfers Paradise". The waves go as high as 25 feet (300 inches). Since the waves are five times my height, I would have possibly drowned if I attempted to surf there. I am glad I did not do such thing. I prefer the amateur waves instead! I was fortunate to be able to observe the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing competition this past November. It was a memorable experience watching the surfers compete as they ride those crazy killer waves! They were spectacular! If you go to North Shore, Sunset Beach is a must visit!

Yelp
Big, deep, sandy beach in summer. Deep water with a nice sandy entry. Good for swimming; not during winter. Hope to come up during winter to see the huge surf and fearless surfers.

Yelp
Something magical about the sunsets here. Just sitting on the beach admiring mother nature. It's an experience. From the surf to the sand to the sunsets. This beach has it all. I miss it!

Yelp
Been here several times and it never gets old. The sunset is the most beautiful so long as there are no clouds blocking the view. There's always a parking space for this beach especially because there's a parking area right across the street where the shower is. The shower consists of 2 shower heads (one for full body, and the other for feet or kids). It sucks and get's funny/embarrassing -- whichever you want to put it -- when people have to wait for you to clean up, but the line gets to an average of like 3/4 people. Back to the beach. It is so PONO! (righteous). It's pretty much always blue and clear. The shore isn't so long and it does get crowded but we still find a way to swim in peace and fun. It's a good place to chill out and relax. Your priority is the sunset though! It's the kama'ainas favorite part! And you can go to foodland nearby for some poke. Haha

Yelp
This beach is among the most beautiful beaches in Oahu. Waikiki beach can't beat this. There aren't that many people and the sand is like sugar crystals. Next time i visit oahu i'll have to make sure to spend much more than 10 minutes here. We only stopped here with a tour bus and it had led us here to check out this beach. Also, be careful the surf can be a bit rough. Also, the public bathroom here is a bit nasty too. It's public so it doesn't get the care and tended that it should. I would rather pee in the ocean; gross yes.

Yelp
I believe this is my husband and my favorite beach in Oahu. It is not crowded, the sand is soft and fine, and the view at sundown just can't be beat. A good beach for swimming (depending on the waves - it was calm when we were there), and lots of surfing. A really relaxing spot and absolutely gorgeous. If you are in Oahu, get a car and take the trek up to the North Shore to see this piece of paradise. Hint: grab some fresh fruit at one of the nearby fruit stands to bring to enjoy as you watch the sun sink into the horizon.

Yelp
Great sand and sun. This time of year sunset turns into an oasis for beach goers looking for clean, calm waters to frolic in. I spent a few hours this past Sunday relaxed in bliss here. The closest neighbor I had was 20 feet away. If your willing, walk away from the parking areas for the best spots. The farther you go the more private you can find. I am anticipating a return visit already and I just might stay late enough to catch the sunset which I hear is fantastic.

Yelp
Beautiful beach and a nice place to hang out and relax. Drove by right when the sun was setting and had to stop and hang out with the gf. Excellent view and a nice romantic place to hang out and enjoy nature at its best.

Yelp
Great beach for the family when there are no waves in the summer time. Beach front parking on the white sand. The water is very clear when there are no waves. There is a lot with restrooms and showers across the street. People only seem to want to park on the beach side of the two lane "highway" though.

Yelp
I absolutely love Sunset! Came here to dive for shells and found myself lost in a whole new underwater world. I'm sure it's not the best site for shells and not the best site for diving, but it's a perfect spot for a quick dive while your keiki swim. We managed to find some great shells in the few hours we were here. Besides Waimea and Hapuna in Kona, this is my favorite beach. Can't wait to get back in the water!!!

Yelp
Beautiful beach at North Shore. Free parking. Wasn't overly crowded either. Waves kicked my butt tho. I stepped into the water and it literally knocked me off my feet and spun me around - hah.
