Appenzell is a small agricultural district of north eastern Switzerland close to Lichtenstein and Austria, and south of Lake Konstanz/Bodensee. The nearest large town is St Gallen. Seeking a campsite for the night after a long drive from Italy we noticed a potential location at Appenzell. The attractive rolling landscape is very different from the dramatic high Alps but has a special charm, and seemed to be less of a tourist honeypot than the lake side. The Landgasthof Eischen is located at the centre of a small hill top camping site where we had intended to put up a tent was quiet and tidy, but as night had closed in and the weather was turning a little damp I thought I would ask if there were rooms free. Good move - there were - and they were spacious, bright, and comfortable to boot. SItting at the cosy bar with a local beer we enquired if they had bar-snacks or food, and this was the unexpected surprise....for there was a very pleasant and spacious dining room (with views) the service was polite and friendly, and we were made to feel very welcome, the stunning food has been prepared by the proprietor Daniel Inaven. We had truly fallen on our feet. Local produce was cooked to perfection and presented with great elegance. A great end to a long day. We were even given complimentary Appenzeller night caps, a herby liquor, as we turned in. The immediate surroundings of a quiet touring camp site might not sound super special and the building seemed modest, but this was an illusion because little did we know that there was a pool and spa here too - tucked away under the old hotel. Breakfast was delicious, with views to the lake in one direction and the higher mountains in the other. I suspect this is a great place to walk and to cycle and I would certainly like to return. Clean, courteous, and comfortable, this family run establishment is worth seeking out. We felt refreshed and ready for the long drive to English Channel. Thank you Daniel and staff.
