On the Grid : Hokey Pokey

"You put your right foot in, you take your ice cream out—that’s what it’s all about on a sunny Summer’s day at Stargarder Straße. Berliners take ice cream weather very seriously and this is one of the finest gelato and sorbet establishments in town. Flavours range from daily specials like salted caramel and Moscow mule to usual suspects like rocky road and pistachio. If Hokey Pokey doesn’t have you dancing it’s because you’re going back for scoop two." - Gabby Lord

Google
Wow the blueberry flavor mixed with hazelnut - 😍😍😍 So creamy and rich, and not flatly sweet but really beautiful. And the cones are delicious - a new favorite for sure 👏🏽

Google
Very creamy ice-cream, and there are also some exotic flavors, so people can definitely enjoy themselves. :)

Google
This place in Berlin has some of the best pistachio ice cream, I think. On weekends and evenings, there's a line, but it usually takes no more than 20 minutes. The ice cream is really good quality and the staff is really nice.

Google
As usual the is one of the best ice cream shops series I usually visit, some branches offer more choices than others , mostly the flavour or very good but sometimes i dont know why things they dont taste the best could be a matter of preferences what i like others they might and the opposite i might not like something and others do, anyways, overall its highly recommended.

Simply the best ice cream in the world, with friendly staff

Google
The best french chocolate ice cream ever! Really you should try it out.

Google
The taste? I think still good. The prices? Increasing every year. The portions? Shrinking every year. I don't think this place is worth the hype anymore.

Google
Hokey Pokey is my absolute favorite ice cream shop. I don't have a sweet tooth often, but when I do, I want quality and this is where I go around home. The quality is top-notch, nice balanced – hokey pokey ice cream is better in my memory than ice cream I've had in Verona or Palo Alto. It's worth paying more for pure quality over quantity.

Yelp
I saw a massive queue for this spot and was intrigued. There were so many flavors to choose from and I was grateful I had a long line to make up my mind. I got the peanut butter flavor and liked that it wasn't too sweet. The crunch was also nice. Overall I thought the ice cream was good but not great (maybe I got my hopes up too high because of the line lol). The shop is well situated and I walked around the park while enjoying the ice cream afterwards.

Yelp
Super delicious gelato with variety of flavors. Open later than indicated on Google maps and Yelp. Long line of people for their evening sugar fix

Yelp
I love Hokey Pokey cream. This year I mean to go out of my way to try more different ice cream and gelato shops in Berlin, but no matter what I find this has got to be among the best in the city. Ice cream or sorbet, they are all light and bursting with flavor. The Very Cherry is like eating cold sour cherries. The Apple-Basil-Vanilla (Apfel-Basilikum) is a mix of calming Tahitian Vanilla to contrast with the almost-piquant-but-not-quite, almost-tart-but-not-quite, spark of apple and basil. (I've tried many flavors but those are the two most recent so easiest to describe.) They are also beautiful to look at! There is generally a line down the sidewalk but it looks worse than it is -- the line does keep moving. There are at least two reasons for that. 1) They have three stations at the ice cream counter, so you wait in the main line and then take your spot when a station opens up; 2) they've opened a little shop two doors down just for selling containers of ice cream to take home. If you're getting take-home only, not eat-in or a cone in your hand, head to the to-go shop a little to the west. I have not learned Hokey Pokey's particular procedures for their ice cream, unlike some I know (Woop Woop or VellGoods in Berlin, Blue Ice Gelato in Tucson) but it must be something special for the outcome to be this delightful.

Yelp
The hype is real. Every single flavor is delicious but the star of the show is the hokey pokey ice cream. My boyfriend and I cannot stop getting it!!! There's usually a line but it doesn't take long. Vibe is great, right next to Mauerpark and perfect for taking an ice cream on a stroll through the park. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
WHAT CAN I GET HERE? It's a small spot that offers chocolate and ice cream. NOTE: There is NO frozen yogurt and during winter off season they only sell pre-made ice cream in a cup, so don't expect to get a scoop of ice cream in a cone. REVIEW: As someone from California and Ice cream lover I've had many great ice creams in Italy and everywheree. From Smitten, Salt and Straw and other spots around the world. My expectations were very high and the Hokey Pokey Vanilla Caramel for 3.80€ really met or exceeded my expectations. I'd almost rank it in the top 3 if not the best ice cream I've had. Definetly the best in Berlin as someone who was born and raised in Berlin. The caramel is perfectly sweet and crunchy. The vanilla is perfectly creamy and tasty. Just super thoughtful, taste of quality and ingredients amazing. I am impressed that this type of quality and taste can be served in a pre-made cup I bought in the store. I also didn't feel too heavy and kcal it is completely fine!

Yelp
One of my friends received this place as a recommendation for great ice cream in Berlin. We were headed to dinner and sad to learn the ice cream shop would close before we finished so we decided to do dessert first! Thank goodness because it was exceptional! No wait when we arrived later in the evening on a Sunday. I tried the smallest size and cannot remember what flavors I chose but I believe they mixed in two for me. One of my friends has the blueberry and raves about it - so much so, she came back the next day for more! The regular small is quite a sizable portion so if you want just a scoop, I recommend going with the kids size! Pretty inexpensive, €2.60 for the kids size if I recall correctly!

Yelp
I was essentially looking for a place to pee and I did not succeed in my quest. However, I did manage to find this magical ice cream place called "Hokey Pokey". Why is it called that? Who knows. Maybe because once you devour some of their ice cream you might start doing your own version of a happy dance! The flavors here are simple but with amped up ingredients. They were shockingly not too busy. I got to sample some before making my final decision. Iranian Pistachio was an absolute must. I loooove pistachio and there was literally whole pistachios in this mix. Then the Cafe Noir caught my eye with it's boozy kick! The prices were 1.80 Euro a scoop. Pricey. But to me they use that money for the ingredients. They have become local favorites. When I got to my friend's house she was shocked that they would raise their prices so high. Being from NY and having NW food snobberies, I had absolutely non problem putting my money where my mouth it. Because it's freaking delicious! And my mouth was in for a treat. Decor wise. Damn. This place is looking fancy yet not snobby. I love a modern girly living room for my ice cream consumption. It looks like most people like the front benches to soak up rays and they devour ice cream. I highly recommend this spot when you're in Berlin! You won't be disappointed. If you are, you might need to re watch "Willy Wonka" and learn to enjoy the ice cream eating kid that still lives inside of you!

Yelp
UPDATED: Moved the original review to this correct location, oops! Their ice cream rivals anywhere including the super-premium variety. Try the pistachio flavor if unsure what to get, since pistachio ice cream is good anywhere! The inside has an ordering area with an open layout from the street - no front door - and people can walk right on in. Next to it, what seemed like a different space is a regular ice cream shop layout with tables and chairs. Both sides are connected because a former wall was knocked down? The location is great since the neighborhood is family oriented and there are lots of families walking about. If prefer sitting outside there are small thick plastic chairs and a bench.

Yelp
I stayed in Berlin for 2 weeks... and went here three times, it was that good. It's located in the trendy Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood- filled with trendy shops and restaurants (and a lot of families too)- and this place is almost ALWAYS packed on a warm evening with a queue going out the door. Don't let that scare you, however, because it moves pretty quickly and service is super friendly even if you're an American like me that has super basic German language. But the star of the show: the flavors!! The Hokey Pokey flavor, is, as they say, what's its all about. It's a toffee-like flavor with a super creamy vanilla ish base. So so good. Another flavor I tried was banana peanut butter (gotta try a more unusual one) and it was good too! Very sweet banana ice cream with little bits of peanut butter chunks. (But the Hokey Pokey flavor- it's namesake- is the winner in my book.) Great price, great flavors, great service! Perfect place for a little treat.

Yelp
I. Am. Melting. This is why I don't go to Europe in the summer. Oh, there's Ice cream? OK! :) The name maybe catchy and fun, but this ice cream shop is serious on quality: real ingredients, no fillers and flavorful selections that will entice even the most unexcited person when it comes to ice cream (me!) Get the Hokey Pokey: vanilla with caramelized pecans, nuts, marshmallows and chocolate. To. Die. For.

Yelp
The reputation of this place has preceded itself. I came there the first time when a friend of mine visited me in Berlin. Three of us were wandering around the neighborhood, and this place popped up. Later I went to the place by myself and tried other tastes. Have to say the queue sometimes adds to that mystery.

Yelp
You know what? It was ok. But it was just ok. In our travels across Europe, my wife and I have discovered that no one really does ice cream like we do it in the USA. It's just...not completely there. We were told by the locals in Berlin that we absolutely had to go here and that it is the best ice cream in the whole world. Clearly they had never been to Cold Stone or Ben & Jerry's. But that's not really fair. The ice cream here was ok. The flavors were alright. It just didn't blow me away and the big problem is that they give you the tiniest scoops for not the tiniest prices. For reference, and I'm not kidding here, 1 scoop in the US is easily 3 scoops here. And whatever, it is what it is, I'm not trying to play the national supremacist card here, I just wanted dessert pretty hard and I felt short-changed. The line for this place was out the door and down the block when we went, and I just didn't get the hype.

Yelp
the ice cream here is phenom it is the best ice cream place in Berlin. I enjoyed eatingthe chocoloate.

Yelp
Hokey Pokey has aside his adorable name a creative and high quality selection of ice cream and sorbet. I stood in this crazy line on a sunny day and wondered if it's even worth it. Guess what: it is. The flavours are creative and intense. If you get a scoop of chocolate it's a scoop of chocolate-gasm. If you order a scoop of mango it's a scoop of f***ing mango-gasm! If you... order something it's pretty good... that's what I was trying to say. Aside from the rich flavours you can also order fresh creation such as apple basil, which I did. The fresh sourness of the apple went very well with the aromatic basil. If that's not good enough for you, add sprinkles and marshmellows or chocolate chips on your ice cream to make it even more perfect! So far so good, but why only 4 stars instead of 5? It's the price. I know that quality has its price but since I've been to the Eismanufaktur before I think I can say that they have ice cream with a very similar quality for less money. I will return to Hokey Pokey but I prefer the Eismanufaktur.

Yelp
Certainly one of the better ice creams I've had in Europe. Their lines are long but they move fast thanks to mutiple workers serving customers simultaneously. I got their pistachio (recommended) and Hokey Pokey (most popular, good first few bites, loses its zing quickly afterwards). Definitely get two contrasting flavors to balance out the intensity (ie. Sorbet and gelato). If you're in the area definitely come by. If not still do.

Walter O.

Yelp
The best ice cream in town!! Amazing!! Try passion fruit or chocolate sorbet (made of Valrhona chocolate) and you will become addicted to it! In summer, you will have to wait for a couple of minutes as the queue is often quite long. ENJOY!
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
Wasn't expecting to find good ice cream in Germany... but I was surprisingly mistaken. We ordered the Hokey Pokey and the banana peanut butter ice cream. I was obsessed with the Hokey Pokey ice cream (mostly for nostalgia reasons as it brought me back to Australia) but it actually was very delicious! The Banana peanut butter ice cream was also pretty good, I really liked the banana ice cream based, but they need to do a better job incorporating peanut butter as we had a giant hard blob in our cup that was inedible... Other than that though the ice cream was very good and the decor/workers at this place are very cute. I recommend coming if you're in the area!

Yelp
I don't really understand the fuss over thus place. It's in a really nice, hip area of town and had a substantial queue outside when I went, but it was pricey (2.40 Euros for a small cup with 2 flavours and a thin waffle). Also, the flavours I got (hokey pokey and pistachio) were ones I made sure to get because rave about them - but they were overly sweet (and I have a sweet tooth!) and just not exceptional in taste or texture. I couldn't even finish my cup. A little let down

A B.

Yelp
stellar creative ice cream with high quality ingredients such as Valrhona chocolate, and generous portion sizes make up for the fact that scoops are pricey by German standards (€2,10 at the time of writing)

Yelp
Bestest ice cream in Berlin!! So lucky to live right down the street from Hokey! Lines can be very daunting down the sidewalk most days but totally worth the wait! The house flavor "Hokey Pokey" is my favorite along with the Pistachio. If you don't want to wait in line go to opposite side and buy some pints to split with friends or fill your fridge- you will get a bigger bang for your buck anyway and when you start craving Hokey the next day you will be all set!
google avatar

Quang D.

Yelp
It's a small place just enough to order and eat outside on benches. The ice cream was very good. They had nice chocolate piece in it and a good amount. It didn't taste like other places cheap on nuts and ingredients with all flavors vanilla and streaks of the flavor you really wanted. Great spot staff was a little overwhelmed with the customer line but still friendly. There can be a school time rush.
google avatar

Roksana Z.

Yelp
Everything about this place is amazing. This is the best ice cream place in Berlin. There are so many delicious flavors, you cannot take just one scoop. My favorites are Mississippi Brownie and Butterkarmel with sea salt. The line may be long, but don't waist time just standing and whining. Meet new people, talk to them!

Jane T.

Yelp
A must in berlin! If I can say so THE BEST ICE CREAM in town ( or anywhere ) we go here every year and before they close for the winter time.
google avatar

Jordan B.

Yelp
A taste of home! This is the only place I know of in Berlin where you can get Rocky Road ice cream. It's fantastic! Don't forget to sit outside the Krümel espresso bar next door while you're eating your ice cream. An espresso is the perfect way to wash it all down!

Em E.

Yelp
One of my favorite ice creams in Berlin! Really in love with their natural for nails and flavor choice
google avatar

Katie E.

Yelp
I had banana peanut butter - it was delicious! compared to the USA, all ice cream in Germany is much cheaper, so I didn't mind the price. it was definitely, by far, the busiest ice cream place I ate at in Berlin, but I still didn't wait longer than five minutes. the staff were also extremely friendly and patient with my indecisiveness. my only complaint would be that there isn't a lot of seating for the sheer volume of people they attract, but I did visit during the first warm front of the spring, so that may be why.
google avatar

Gemma S.

Yelp
OMG their ice cream is crafty and tasty! The hazelnut chocolate chip with peanuts is my favorite. Long lines on hot days but plenty of staff and very nice people! Need to try more flavors! I want to take all my friends here!
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Sooo many different flavors! Finally, ice cream for grownups. Although, don't count on being able to get to your ice cream without a wait in any sort of decent weather - even at € 1,60 a scoop, Berliners (mostly English-speaking) line up for this delicious ice cream, and one or two of them even contain a bit of alcohol! A must-stop if you are nearby.
google avatar

Renata S.

Yelp
Very good ice cream in a cool area. I've tried pistachio and hokey pokey flavors and they were amazing. I'm definitely coming back.
google avatar

Eric A.

Yelp
Very good ice cream, with good flavors and althought more than 40 people in the line, the service was excellent!
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
Don't let the long line scare you off. This place is worth the wait. The Karamel was outstanding, as were the other flavours I tried. I dare say that Hokey Pokey served up a better gelato than any I had in Italy (and I had gelato daily during my 11-day trip there recently). The only downside to this establishment is a total lack of seating. But even with no place to sit, the gelato is worth it.

Perola M.

Yelp
Before this place was an absolute MUST in the area. Now it got "gentrified", changing recipes to make cheaper (I guess) ice creams, for example Rocky Road. If you are a recurrent customer as I am, you will notice those changes from one day to another. I feel really sad for moving away from Hokey Pokey, this place was impressive some time ago and hurts to see where it's heading :(
google avatar

Kifah A.

Yelp
This Berliner icecream is becoming a trade mark. No wonder, the staff is friendly and the quality is amazing.
google avatar

Laura Y.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood ice cream shop. The ice cream is great and the prices are cheap. There is always a line when it is warm out. Our favorite is the tiramisu. I once had the banana peanut butter and it was actually too banana-y for me and I love bananas. Otherwise no complaints.
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
Visited this place while on vacation with my husband. Seriously, it's the best ice cream I've ever had. Don't skip it!
google avatar

Annie S.

Yelp
Found my little happy box in form of sorbet in Berlin! We crossed this place on a stroll around the area and I actually wanted to go for a drink however the sun was out and it was asking for an icy refreshment. Loved that they had lots of sorbet options which all are vegan friendly and to top this they offered a gin tonic cucumber sorbet -like win win for me, sorbet and a cheeky afternoon drink combined in one happy cup. As I never can only have one scoop matched it with this zesty lemon sorbet and I was in heaven. My friend agreed that the sorbet combo was absolutely delish while he was enjoying a chocolate pistachio mix. It looked really good and he was happy out with his choice.

Fiona S.

Yelp
Yes, the flavors are very unique and tasty, but at 1,80€ per scoop also ridiculously overpriced. It's places like this that make living in this city difficult, especially with kids. Pity ....
google avatar

Marcus M.

Yelp
Great ice cream, one of the best I have ever eaten! The portions vary, once big, once small
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to going to this place. The ice cream was tasty, but not as great as I expected. Also the scoops were kind of small and with 1.60 Euros a bit pricey. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I can only give this place three stars.
google avatar

Marius S.

Yelp
Great selection and very tasty. Would go there again and loved the chocolate and Rocky Mountain
google avatar

Ben O.

Yelp
Just the best ice place. Worth the experience! The pistache is my favorite with banana peanut butter.

Angela K.

Yelp
One of the best gelato places I've ever had. I had a scoop of the rocky road and their signature Hokey Pokey flavor. Simply scrumptious, and worth the wait.
google avatar

Lefteris K.

Yelp
I just tried the franzoezische schokolade ... divine chocolate ice cream. Definitely recommended
google avatar

Qype User (I_was_…)

Yelp
I really really like icecream, but just yesterday for the first time in my life i had to toss the waffle. Too watery, too little flavour! Otherwise this place is friendly and with a nice interior!

Sarah S.

Yelp
Porbably the best chocolate ice cream I've ever had! It's very creamy and chocolaty with a slight bitter taste to it! I also tried the hokey pokey it's super tasty it has Crunchy caramel chunks inside that's makes it super tasty ! I highly recommend it this shop plus you are never alone, there's always a queue outside which makes the experience more exciting and fun. Cheers !

Ashley H.

Yelp
Berliners eat ice cream no matter the weather. This place is all natural and good quality. Cute airy vibe. Lots of families. I prefer a chunkier more interesting ice cream, but this one has some unique flavors to keep things fresh.
google avatar

Helen T.

Yelp
There's a few things I miss about Berlin, and ice cream from Hokey Pokey is one of them. Now I'm usually not a huge ice cream fan, but this place easily converted me. Even when I'm back in the States, I keep trying to find something that's similar to Hokey Pokey but it's impossible. To be honest, we had a hard time figuring out the flavors because it was all in German, but the people working there were nice enough to try to explain it to us in English. They have a bunch of random, unique flavors that I've never heard of, but no matter what I tried, every flavor was good. The ice cream was so, so creamy and the flavors tasted true to their name. You know what's even better? IT WAS ONLY 1.20 EURO/SCOOP. I don't even know how that's possible. My friends and I came here like 3 times in a one day. And we came here the day after too. It was just too hard to resist delicious ice cream. It's probably good enough to say that it's probably the best ice cream I've had so far. If you're in the area, PLEASE come here, you won't regret it. Their ice cream was just too good!

Qype User (tyckma…)

Yelp
Perhaps the best ice cream in town. With a really nice coffee shop right next to it.
