El Albergue Ollantaytambo

This really is a very nice and special special place, in the old railway building right on the platform of the trains to Machu Picchu. Outside of the high season, the hotel will make a point of not putting guests in the rooms next to the trains. The garden rooms are absolutely lovely and finished to a high standard. Most are little bungalows with one ground floor and one top floor. We were there in November, low season. The reception is also Vernice, especially Luis at the front desk. Good breakfast too. The restaurant is not really so super, especially compared to other restaurants we ate at in Peru. They also offer a “Pacha Mama” meal in the garden, which is sort of a BBQ with hot stones underground. Nice enough, but quite expensive for what it is. It also includes a visit to the very small coffee roasting and distillery operations, which is of little interest. Neither was operational at the time although staff said they were but when I came back the next morning to check there was no sign of activity. There is a great garden in the back, and school for local kids. Owner Wendy has created a very special place here, hopefully her kids will maintain the tradition.

We had an incredible stay at El Albergue. Wonderful location, and the sustainable farm to table aspect of their property was a real treat. Maria at the front desk was an absolutely wonderful person to start us off on our adventure. She gave us service with a smile and made us feel so important!! She is such a special person. Try the panchamanca lunch, that is definitely one of the highlights of our adventure so far !!

Staying at the El Albergue in Ollantaytambo was an amazing experience! We felt so lucky to find this gem. It is such a charming property with an ideal location (attached to the train station, along the tracks, very unique and special)! Close enough to town for an easy walk, but at the same time separate enough to feel like you are in your own oasis that El Albergue exudes. It offers excellent food, an attentive and friendly staff, and an absolutely beautiful environment. The rooms are set around an exquisite garden, beautifully appointed, including some original artwork created by the owner. Plus, the property owns their own organic farm, coffee roasting facilities and distillery, adjacent to the hotel. All of which supply provisions to their restaurants; including the main dining room, the cafe which opens to the train platform, and the amazing Pachamanca feast offered near the farm if you are able to participate in during your time there. We had an absolutely wonderful time staying here, and if we find ourselves lucky enough to travel back to Peru, this will be on the top of our list to visit again.

The best thing of this place is the location to the train to Machu Picchu, its like in your backyard, you step out of the hotel, there you are on the platform of the train. The room has 3 twin side beds however we just two person. It looks antique, there however was a big fly landed on the post of the bed, I was not able to catch it with the notes book there. however it did not make more sound during the night. while its so close to the train, it can bother you as well, since the train made sound well into midnight. We had dinner in the restaurant of the hotel, it was not good, the fish is dry, the meat was not good either, we were just too tired to go out. We missed breakfast since we need to catch the earlier train, the front dest said we with get sandwitch and coffee, but there was not coffee at all. I wish people do what they said.

Stay here before your Inca Trail trek or visit to Machu Picchu. They kindly held our luggage for the trek and the restaurant was great. The Casita was perfect for three of us. You need time here to visit the town (historic Inca streets well preserved - go to ALQA museum/restaurant) and the fortress ruins - nice walk from the hotel through the farm directly to the ruins.

You wake at 5am with first train (as hotel is on platform) but unlike most other hotels in Sacred Valley and Cusco they don't offer an early breakfast. It starts at 6am which is ridiculous. Most people are up before then for hikes and trips etc. Annoyingly they did provide a counter on train platform for non-guests to buy food and drink so it's not like they're not already up and about. Otherwise the hotel was clean and comfortable but we didn't have hot water on evening for shower.

Location location location! This hotel is inside the Ollantaytambo station and unexpectedly drop dead quiet for such a location. Sparkling clean room. Breakfast in their restaurant was sumptuous, fresh and delicious too. Four stars only because room was too warm for our liking and the hotel didn’t even have a portable fan. Lady at the reception suggested I keep the window open instead (which would have been difficult given train services)

Right within the station itself, this hotel is a unique, relaxing experience with natural and organic produce. Highly recommended for a pit stop to or from aquas calientes.
