It was a last minute choice for us and we were hungry. I ordered spinach cannelloni he ordered the tamale casserole. We were served a basket of room temp. bread with ice cold butter so it was difficult to spread the butter. The tasted great they need to serve the bread warm and the butter soft. Our meals arrived really fast for Mexico standards. The tamale casserole was awful not really a tamale just masa mess overly sweet red sauce and melted cheese on top. The cannelloni wear way over cooked and had no shape, the sauce was barely thicker than the consistency of milking flavors were weak. We were very hungry and we at it. The meals were like eating a cheap frozen tv dinner. Now the good. Our server was attentive and fast, the bread arrived early and our drinks came almost immediately after ordering. The restaurant is gorgeous and dining on the balcony over looking the Plaza was a treat. I am sorry we didn't like the food.

I was given a great table on the balcony overlooking the zocalo. Superb food served promptly and surprisingly cheap given the high quality. The best dish I had was the garlic soup, closely followed by the stuffed peppers. They give you delicious crusty bread rolls but don’t, like me, eat too many because they’ll spoil your appetite for the delights to come!

Extraordinary, care and flexible service. The best found yet in Oaxaca. Very nice view from the terrace.

Our family visited Oaxaca from the US and had an overwhelmingly great experience….until this restaurant, which we chose because it overlooks the city square (Zocalo). When we put our name on the waitlist we let the host know we wanted a table by the railing so we could people watch, as many of the reviewers also stated was the reason they chose this restaurant. We were told after a short wait that our table was ready so we went upstairs to be seated. The waitress threw an absolute tantrum over us receiving a table by the balcony because another couple had made reservations and were there before us. I completely agree with the couple getting the table. But after we were told that the table was no longer available we asked if we could wait and the host was super polite and allowed us. However, the same waitress proceeded to be loud and talk rudely about us in Spanish, not knowing we were a bilingual family. It was so incredibly awkward that I didn’t feel comfortable eating there and felt very unwelcome. I don’t know if her reaction was because we are American or because I am white but it really doesn’t matter if I can pay my bill. If an individual is selective about whom they serve they may want to consider a different profession rather than giving the organization that they represent a bad reputation, especially in a state that ranks as the second poorest state in the country and is highly dependent on tourism to support their local economy. I am sorry to the staff here that will suffer because of this review, but I serve non-citizens in my line of work in my home country, especially Mexicans, and I am always respectful and professional to everyone. To everyone else in Oaxaca who treated us like honored guests, we appreciate you 🙏🏼.

I went there for a meal with my husband. As in previous reviews the location and view is great. The meal was good, until I started to experience stomach pains a few hours later. All night I was waking up to throw up and continued to experience stomach pains. After a visit to a doctor, receiving a shot and medication did the symptoms finally subside. Be careful regarding the food you choose. This was truly a horrible way to end my vacation considering I was eating local food with no issues throughout my visit.

Google
Location, location, location. This fine restaurant has a commanding view of the zocalo and a tried and true menu. Historical note: founded by a famous jail alai player of the early 20th century with mementos of the sport hanging about. Known locally for its Basque cuisine, but the Mexican food is what you came for and it is good. Although the bleu cheese saladis very good. Pro tip, get a balcony window table to get above the action, a little distance from the marimba band and the sidewalk peddlers. This one may be for the tourists, but there is also an uptown location, so it is a truly Oaxacan restaurant

Google
Wonderful restaurant overlooking the Zócalo Square. Service was exceptional, everyone was so kind and helpful. Pasta bolognese was a bold choice but to my surprise it was delicious. My husband loves the garlic shrimp. Bread & Butter never disappoints but this butter is mixed with cilantro & I’m not a cilantro fan but it was very good.

Best food and service I had in the centro! Waitresses were very attentive and friendly. The food was delicious and the view of el zocalo was perfect.

Yelp
Our most expensive meal in Mexico. Food all tasted great and prepared well but for some reason my husband ended up with a stomach ache. He had the steak and it was cooked almost well done. We both had Caesar Salad and Ham Croquettes and we both had Jamaica. Service was good even though they were busy and we didn't think to get a reservation.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night while the Zocalo was bustling with people. It has a very lively atmosphere, particularly if you sit out in the front patio. I got to sit right next to the band as they were playing music and I liked it a lot. They don't play super loudly, it's like a nice volume and the music they play I enjoyed. As for the food, it was also very good. I ordered a steak and it came with a side of guacamole and beans with some chips. It was a very satisfying meal and I recommend it if you are looking for a place in town to have a good steak. As for the service, the reason I give 4 and not 5 stars is because I asked for my check and it took forever for them to bring it to me. It took so long that another waitress came by and asked me if they had already brought me my check and I said no. I really didn't like that. Other than this, I recommend coming to eat and try the food here if you're in Oaxaca.

Yelp
This is the perfect spot to chill look over the balcony and experience the real Oaxaca.

Yelp
Excellent spanish food. The red wine was nice, we had full course appetizers, entrees, desserts and coffee and they were all spot on. We had smooth mezcal, norteño steak, blue cheese steak, octopus and tasty dessert. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Seating on the balcony with view to the main plaza and enjoyed great music from the performers from the street.

Yelp
Cool place to have a drink or coffee. Marimba music every night. We sat outside by the arches, great spot for peolple watching, listen to live music and see the zocalo and plaza activity. Prices were fair

Yelp
Right on the central Zocolo, this colonial inspired restaurant is a must visit when visiting Oaxaca. Sit outside and enjoy the mariachis in the plaza and watch the Oaxacan world drift by while enjoying the local mezcal, grasshoppers (!?), hearts of palm vinaigrette, Oaxacan flank steak and Aztec soup. Sitting upstairs affords a grand view. What a wonderful festive place for dinner!

Yelp
I came here with a Basque, he said "the best basque restaurant outside the homeland". I tried their mole and it was delicious. It has one of the best views of oaxaca and the service is great! I would recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
Delicious food, super great service and it very clean. You get a variety of delicious bread with some yummy spread before your meal. You got to try the different cheese plate too. There were 8 of us and all of us enjoyed our meal. I recommend the lamb dish, or the grilled arreciera plate.

Yelp
I haven't been here since 1983 but fondly recall their gualjalote con mole oaxaqueno. Located right on the zocalo. Excellent service. Would both repeat and recommend.
