*too long didn't read: Walked in as a first time customer with low expectations, walked out $17 poorer, and still hungry..*
Let me please begin this by saying that I have high standards for mexican food, as I moved to Brooklyn from San Diego. So when approaching a new spot i walk in with VERY low expectations.
I usually go to the mexican food truck not fifty yards down the street from this place. The food truck usually comes in the evenings, so this afternoon i walked into this shop. I had never been there before, this was my first time. When initially telling the man at the front that it was my first time here, he gladly helped me through some of the options in the menu. Service was exceptional, he walked me through the menu with great ease and confidence.
I do now think that I was being sold. I asked for a 12" verde fajita DOUBLE carnitas, add Pico De Gilla, add jalapeño burrito
what I received was a flavorless mush in a wet tortilla.
(Most) everything I had asked for was on it, and everything it came with as well (apart from the jalapeño's -and even that isn't a big deal if im being honest-)
i expected maybe... just the meat to have a better flavor/texture than unseasoned unbuttered mashed potatoes? it was particularly unnerving to have the distribution of ingredients be so haphazard. one second I was biting into overcooked Spanish rice, the next, just one mouthful of mush that tasted like porridge in meat form, right after a glob of guac
additionally, I WANT TO STATE FOR THE RECORD I tipped 20% and do not regret it, those workers deserve every penny. I myself am a bartender. which is why I felt so compelled to write this. the food is BLAND BABY. if she was a spice, she would be flour!
B L A N D MUSH and absolutely NOT worth the $17.50 I ended up paying (and then taking home, deconstructing, spicing it up, and heating it all together into some form of edible arrangement.
just go 50 yards away to the boys with the taco truck. at least when you ask them for hot sauce they give you that AND THEN SOME.
ONE last note: I asked for hot sauce on the side when i ordered my food. It wasn't in the bag when I received it (no biggie) they happily gave it to me upon request. However it's due to this that I witnessed, with my own two optic stems, the man on the grill physically pour the sauce for me. when I went home, took that first initial disappointing bite of the "original flavor tapioca pudding" they call meat, i was hoping to save it with some damn hot sauce. that amazing spicy flavorful burst of either green or red sauce to add that extra kick (or any kick tbh) only to taste an even more disappointing bland and flavorless sauce i've ever had before. My wife thought it was marinara sauce.
If you're into quick food, and overpriced flavorless protein by all means hit this place up, ther can get you a soggy sad burrito in less time than the disappointing wrap you'd get from the bodega on the corner nearby. If you wanna spend less and get more flavor hit up the taco truck (in the evenings) just down the block. tonight however, i'm eating ramen..
