The Best Hotels in Oaxaca, Mexico

"Nestled in the colorful Jalatlaco neighborhood, this contemporary boutique emphasizes organic modern design and handcrafted furnishings made from natural materials. Spacious suites offer generous private outdoor patios and large windows for abundant light, while the communal courtyard provides a garden-like setting with winding paths and casual seating. Attentive service and included breakfast add to the comfortable, relaxed vibe; the hotel sits slightly north of the city center, in a quieter, more suburban pocket that’s still within walking distance of main attractions." - Austa Somvichian-Clausen Austa Somvichian-Clausen Austa Somvichian-Clausen is a travel and lifestyle journalist living in New York City. Hotel El Callejón in Oaxaca it’s hunted! …. was a major disappointment and very hard to recommend, especially considering the stay was in the most expensive room, which made the overall experience feel even worse relative to the price paid. The room itself felt uncomfortable and haunted, making it difficult to relax or rest properly during the stay. On top of that, the pickup transfer from the hotel to the airport, which had been arranged in advance, never arrived, creating unnecessary stress and forcing last‑minute changes to reach the flight on time. Communication with reception was also very poor, even though Spanish was spoken fluently, so the problem was not a language barrier but a lack of attentiveness and follow‑through from the staff. Given the combination of an unsettling room, failed airport transfer, and weak communication, it is hard to recommend staying at this hotel, particularly at higher room categories when there are many other boutique options in Oaxaca with better reputations for service and reliability.

Hotel El Callejón is an absolute gem — stylish, peaceful, and full of authentic Oaxacan charm. Tucked away on a quiet cobblestone street just a short walk from the city center, it feels like a hidden sanctuary. ||The rooms are spacious, immaculate, and thoughtfully designed, with comfortable beds, and luxurious bathrooms. ||The staff were exceptional — welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. They went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed, from arranging tours and taxis to offering local recommendations that made our trip extra special.

This was truly the best stay at a hotel I have ever had. From the gorgeous courtyard, to the huge and beautifully designed room (we had the two bedroom family suite), to the amazingly attentive and lovely staff, we were treated like celebrities staying at a nearly private compound. The location is very nice, very secure, and felt safe at all times. There are restaurants and cafes in the immediate neighborhood, but it's only a short and pleasant walk to the busier (and noisier) parts of the city. The included breakfast was super convenient and very good even for our picky children. The staff thought of everything including small extras like remembering that two of us would be celebrating our birthdays and providing us with food, coffee, and tea for an early trip to the airport at the end of the stay. The entire staff at the hotel from housekeeping to the restaurant and bar were as charming and excellent as anywhere I have been, and they were all focused on ensuring we were having a wonderful time, but I want to specifically thank Romina for all the little extras that made this such a special vacation!

We have had a wonderful 5 night stay at El Callejón Hotel Boutique. The location is great as it is about a 10 minute walk from the main centre. The staff here are so friendly and helpful. Thank you to Romina and Roxana (lovely ladies at reception in the evenings) for helping us with Oaxaca recommendations and taxi bookings. Thank you for Victaliano and Jackmar for organising our room change and for being so kind and attentive! :) The rooms are gorgeous… there are little personal touches that make it feel luxurious and special (welcome cards from the housekeeper and hotel staff, chocolates etc.). We had breakfast included which was delicious every morning. We also had the best margarita cocktails at the hotel bar made by José!! Highly recommended for a Oaxaca stay.

We stayed at El Callejon Hotel last year and it was phenomenal. We invited family and friends this year and wanted to share this experience with them. Unfortunately, it fell short this year. It started with our arrival. We were received with nothing special whereas last year they had copitas de mezcal and mezcal granita or nieve for us. This year not even a map nor orientation of the attractions near by. I expressed my concern and was reassured they would make it right and that this was due to the fact that the chef had an emergency. I understood and know emergencies happen. But, we were there 5 nights and nothing was made right-not even a map. It was all in the details that were missing this year. Another example, they did not provide us with daily bottled water in the room this year. We had to ask the desk personnel daily. They did not help us to the door this year and ensure we had a taxi despite not being busy and just sitting at the desk. We enjoyed our stay in Oaxaca with our family and friends but it wasn’t because of El Callejon Hotel. It was just average.

Recently returned from a trip to Oaxaca and stayed at El Callejon in a 2 bedroom suite. The hotel is a lovely mix of modern and traditional. Our suite was quiet, spacious, clean and well appointed. I would say that the bathroom for a suite this size should have 2 sinks given the size of the rooms but otherwise no complaints.||The staff is attentive and warm. The location is perfect and a close walk to all the sights. ||My only complaint is the coffee at breakfast is awful! This is an easy fix. |Definitely recommend a stay here.

We absolutely loved our stay at El Callejón! The building and grounds are beautiful and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The staff was super helpful both onsite and with recommendations and services offsite. The location was perfect, within walking distance of everything. I highly recommend.
