14 Essential Mexican Dishes to Try on Your Next Trip - AFAR

"A recommended Tulum spot for tikin xic, the Yucatecan seafood preparation where fish is rubbed with an achiote-based paste (bright red from annatto), seasoned with garlic, chilies, citrus and spices, then steamed in banana leaves for a fragrant, packeted presentation." - Sophie Friedman

El Camello Jr. is a must every time we’re in Tulum. The seafood is always fresh and flavorful, and my wife swears by their fried fish — crispy, perfectly seasoned, and cooked to perfection. It’s a laid-back spot with great prices, generous portions, and fast, friendly service. Easy to find and well worth the visit, this place never disappoints. A true local gem!

We heard El Camello Jr. recommended over and over—especially for the ceviche—and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The fish was super fresh, the portions generous, and the flavor spot on. It’s a place that feels authentic, which is refreshing in a town like Tulum where so much feels overly curated. Great value for money and friendly, efficient service made it one of our favorite stops in Tulum.

We liked the food and the atmosphere, everything was great. Make sure to bring cash as they don't accept any other payment method.

Amazing food experience. Highly recommend the Ceviche, Filet de Pescado en Salsa Camello and the Shrimp in Garlic. So good you don’t want your meal to end. Portions are great and we came back a second time and will likely go again before leaving Tulum! Paid around 250-280 Pesos per meal plus drinks (160 for cocktails).

Came here solely based on the number of reviews this place got. I only tried the guac and the grilled fish tacos. The food itself was very fresh, I think the guac could have had a little more spice, but they did have hot sauce sitting around. The price was reasonable, it could be a little lower for what it is. But overall good experience. If I go back, it will be to try something new.

This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Tulum. The seafoods are so fresh and they give you so much food you would not walk out of here hungry. The prices are so cheap we had literally appetizer + food + desserts + drink for two under 850 pesos. Please try the pasta here if u have not. I be coming back soon :))

Local spot known for some of the freshest seafood in Tulum, with fair prices and a relaxed, authentic vibe. We enjoyed a rich, flavorful fish soup, perfectly grilled prawn skewers, and a crisp, tender whole fried fish—everything fresh and generously portioned. Service was friendly and straightforward. The atmosphere is a bit bare, but it doesn’t take away from the quality of the food or the experience.
