A Local’s Guide to Nicaragua

"El Ceibo Museum on the island of Ometepe is a must-see, too. There’s a big selection of burial urns and jewelry, plus a selection of ceramic halls with different pottery phases."

MUSEUM UPDATED PRICES AND REVIEW: As of June 2025 it is now $10/person for both the pottery and currency collections or $7/person for only pottery. The price includes a guided tour that lasts about 30-45 minutes. We felt the new price is a bit steep for this museum - the previous reviews from a year ago said it was about $5/person and that seems reasonable. However, they did honor the old price for us since the new price wasn't listed on Google, which was very nice. Our guide was engaging, knowledgeable, and very friendly. The tour provides a look into the history of the island and the region. It's a good thing the guide is present, because you would not have a clue otherwise. The museum and hotel are both located off a dirt road about a 15-20 minute drive from from Moyogalpa. Restrooms are available and small souvenirs for purchase. Enjoy your visit if you choose to go!

The artifacts museum is super inter as well laid out. The money museum is also worth seeing (you’re here, just do it). If the guide starts to give you a sob story about sick kids, expensive medicine, low pay just don’t respond. This is the only time in a month in Nica that someone has tried that s—t and it cost him the tip Id planned to give.

I had such a great time staying at this Hotel. The rooms were so comfy and welcoming. The location is pretty close to the main road. What made my experience even better was David. He helped us find our rooms. He made us laugh and made sure we were happy during our stay. Really recommend this place ! Staff is awesome

The museum is very interesting, if you can speak Spanish you will enjoy of the explanation. Interesting to see objects that are before and after Christ created/used. I advise you to rent a vehicle to be able to get wherever you wanna go in the island. The beds in the rooms are really comfy

Staff were super lovely, despite a slight mix up with the booking.com reservation! We ate dinner here and stayed for 2 nights with breakfast, they have a lovely pool and the place is clean! It is down a dirt track but we were fine on the bikes. WiFi was ok in the main but did drop for a few hours one morning that we were there.

We only visited the museum, which was surprisingly interesting for the number and age of the artifacts that they display. It only takes about half of an hour and because we were in a tour I don't know how much tickets cost, but I would still recommend stopping in for a visit.

Very impressed by this guided tour (English or Spanish) to see what is meant to be the largest collection of ancient artefacts in Nicaragua! Our guide was exceptional, lots of information provided with such enthusiasm. An amazing collection on show, many items dating back 1,000’s or years BC. Great visit to understand more about the history of this unique Island, highly recommended!!

Really impressive archaeological museum. (I don’t know why this is categorized as a hotel…) The collection was far bigger than I expected. Definitely worth a stop to see both museums (the other museum is history of money). Ticket is $7 for one museum or $10 for both, but it came with a personal guided tour, which was very enjoyable. I was the only person at the entire museum when I visited. Hopefully more people will make the stop…
