El Comal Restaurant

Went to this restaurant yesterday with a couple of friends and was blown away. El Comal knows how to layer their spices, red chili absolutely to die for. It is hot but not in the way of burning your mouth to a point where you can't taste anything for the next week, but rather a nice layered slow heat. The adovada was delicious. Prices are very reasonable, absolutely loved it!!!!

Authentic flavorful and delicious food served in a welcoming and warm atmosphere. El Comal is a must try if you are in Santa Fe. We tried Papas Rancheros with verde and another one with rojas sauce and couldn't decide which one is better. The red sauce (Rojas) is certainly more spicy. They come with Sopapilla which were tasty too. The service was great too and we will definitely go back next time we are here.

Don’t let the humble facade turn you away. The folks inside are unbelievably genuine and kind. The food was authentic and delicious, service was friendly and fast. I don’t like spice but the salsa was worth the burn! The flavors were all phenomenal.

Best place in Santa Fe. The salsa is the most chile forward salsa I've ever had and I love that it is spicy. The stacked cheese enchilada was perfect, especially with both red and green chiles on top. Wonderful sopaipillas that are just just as good for scooping up beans and chiles as they are with honey. I will be back next time I'm in Santa Fe.

We had dinner and everything was very good. Breakfast all day. We had the Bacon Breakfast Burrito, Stuffed Sopapillas with ground beef, a side of menudo (very good menudo and clran) and chicharron. The green chile was tasty, the salsa was pretty warm but good, and the red chili was pretty good too. Tried their Chicken Chalupa, Taco salad with chicken, and a tamale. They were all good.

I am so glad I listened to wise folks on the internets and came by this little mom and pop shop. Food? Stellar. Almost everything we got was perfection. Friend and I both go the Adovada combo. I loved the adovada chalupa so much I got an adovada burrito to go for breakfast tomorrow! The cheese enchilada w/Christmas sauces was so delicious, as was the rice and posole. The only thing I didn't love was the shredded beef taco. Beef was dry, tough, a little flavorless. Maybe because it was the bed of the night? My friend got the regular ground beef taco and said she liked it. On top of all this, the food came out fast, piping hot, and the older man who works there is so sweet, never saw him stop working and he made sure to check on us a few times. The woman working tonight was good too, very professional and good service, just not sweet and warm/fuzzy like the older gentleman was. Additionally, prices were fair for the amount and quality of food, ZERO wait, easy parking, not at all touristy, just very small-town, old school diner type vibe. I will 100% be back when in Santa Fe and highly recommend!

El Comal is outside of downtown Santa Fe and is an old school Mexican restaurant. We noticed what looked like locals only and no tourists dining for breakfast. That's a great sign and why we went. My wife ordered the huevos ranchero with the green and red sauce and I ordered the migas with a side of bacon and green chili sauce. We both chose the fresh made to order sopasillas instead of the tortillas. The chili sauces have a great spice kick and flavor. The dinner menu lioked good too. We would definitely come back.

Like the posting says, unassuming new Mexican eatery. I order a combo plate with green chilies. It was ok, yes, just ok. The good: very friendly staff, food came quickly, tasty The bad: $70 for 2 people The ugly: my friend got fajitas and they come with ONE tortilla And they charge for extra salsa, the kind that comes free with chips. Not sure it was tasty enough for me to return

Great fajitas. The steak was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and really satisfying. The sopapilla was hot, fluffy, and paired well with the meal. The green chili was very good too. I came in just a few minutes before closing, but they were still kind enough to accommodate me without making me feel rushed. A very satisfying experience.

Visiting from CO, stumbled upon this gem with a few friends from the Midwest. No fancy signs, just a diamond hidden amongst other businesses in a strip mall style building. The Veggie enchilada and burrito were extremely tasty. The house made green and red chili was a fantastic exclamation point to compliment all the fixings in these bad boys! The other dish was a chicken burrito that my buddy said was cooked perfectly. Very local and great to eat some delicious food in Santa Fe!

Visiting Santa Fe, picked El Comal for its high ratings and wanting Mexican food. Appears to be a favorite with the locals. Ordered the Triple Enchilada: beef, cheese and chicken with beans and rice, corn tortillas. The enchiladas were covered with a red flaming hot sauce, a distracting heat covering the good food underneath. Scrapped chili sauce off to the side and it was all good. Second order was a Taco salad with beef. Fresh lettuce, good beef and all the fixings. Chips and salsa appeared to in house made, deep fried. Canned sodas for beverages. Service was fast and friendly.

This place is definitely considered a "diamond in the rough". Most amazing food, with very fair pricing here in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Service was absolutely excellent. Food was unbelievable. The place was completely packed, which is always a good sign. I most definitely will be returning when traveling back through town.

Some of the best chile I've had in New Mexico, and that's saying something, I've been all over!

Great service, nice staff. Clean restaurant. Prompt service. Food quality was 5/10, presentation and flavors were a little muted. But I'm used to bold Sonoran flavors and tortillas harina that have lard and are thinner. The red chili is great, the heat on their salsa is good too! gracias , soy rato!

Wasn't too sure about the place when we drove up but happy we went in. Serve was very friendly and efficient. The food was good. Green chili sauce was good. Would we go back? Yeah probably so.

Great local place for food all day. We came for breakfast. The place is in a dumpy looking strip center but the food and service are awesome!! I had papas rancheras which was eggs over tasty potatoes with salad and refried beans. And it came with sopapilla!! yumm. The wife was hungry and had steak and eggs. Very tender ribeye. Huge portions. Took potatoes home and ordered a few flour tortillas to make breakfast tacos tomorrow.

Had Prosole, green chillies just enough to make your lips tingle. Yummy. Tortilla was the best part.. big and Charlie brown

This place, out of the core Santa Fe area, is well worth the visit! We came for breakfast at 9 on a December Sunday morning and there was plenty of room. We had huevos rancheros and the Santa Fe omelette and thoroughly enjoyed then both. Both red and green chili sauces were tasty. Bonus - I had a fresh, warm and fluffy sopapilla with honey to finish... This fits the Yelp model we search for - small, unassuming place with great service and food. Thank you for a wonderful New Mexico breakfast!

We just got in town and we were hungry and looking for authentic local cuisine. The staff at hotel recommended El Comal as it was walking distance and we didn't want to get back in the car and drive. The strip mall is nothing to look at but the food was delicious, the service was great and we would definitely go back there again!! I had the Chili Relleno dinner and it was one of the best I've ever had! Hubby has the Combo Plate which he said was awesome and we both had a margarita! Looking forward to eating here again next time we pass through Santa Fe, NM

Such a horrible experience here. The food was mediocre, and that alone I was going to give 2-3 stars. BUT we had a party of 6 with separate bills, in which each bill was higher than the amount of food we ordered. When questioned, the server told us gratuity was already included for the "clean up". BUT the majority of our group already had paid and added extra gratuity since it was not marked on our bills. It wasn't until after the fact that we did the math and were very upset. I love supporting small businesses and try very hard to be understanding. But the food was VERY mid but the situation afterwards was just ridiculous.

I really only came here because it was within walking distance of my hotel but I was pleasantly surprised. I got the steak, which was delicious. The sopapilla was really good as were the beans. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the red sauce on the enchiladas. Service was friendly and quick. Worth a try if you're in the area.

Last visit to Santa Fe, El Comal was a bright spot amidst our foodie journey. Returning to Santa Fe again, we knew they were a must eat! This visit, I opted for the chili relleno, my husband the huevos rancheros, chicken taco for my daughter, and extra sopapillas for the table- Again, the largest, fluffiest sopapillas- warm, thick, poofy, delicious flavor-one of the more notable sopapillas in my entire NM visit The meal itself made me feel like I was eating an authentic home cooked meal, where everything was cooked with love. They did not skimp on ingredients or quality. Smothered upon smothered with cheese and chili, big pieces of meat in the taco, and delicious crispy chips & salsa irresistible always a must visit!

El Comal fills the bill. Unpretentious, good food, attentive service, reasonable prices. Bottled beer, margaritas, sangria and Michaela for alcohol. Generous servings. My sopapilla was the size of the plate. Family friendly, they can handle me or two parties of six, maybe more. Have to try their breakfasts. Will be back. Kinda hard to find. Look for the Cafe sign. El Comal has faded to almost nothing. Middle of a short strip of shops.

El Comal (flat iron, griddle) is in a very unassuming strip center. Not much to look at from the outside and has a very homey low key decor. The food is authentic New Mexico and it is simply magnificent! We were passing thru Santa Fe and wanted to try New Mexico dishes and chose this spot for its reviews we've read. So glad we did. I had the shredded beef sopapilla with both red and green chili sauce (Santa Fe Christmas style), amazing. If in the area, please stop by and try it yourself!

Absolutely amazing food. So much flavor. Great price! My husband had the chicken taco salad and I can say that it was the freshest ingredients I've ever seen in the chicken taco salad. I had the veggie Sopailla. Great service! The restaurant is in a strip center, and it's not much to write home about, but the food overcomes that!!

I wanted to love this place. The food on the tables looked amazing. We weren't greeted kindly. Told to wait for table, there were several open tables. After 5 minutes of being ignored we left. It's too bad, as I said, the food looked great.

Best REAL New Mexico food I've ever had - breakfast or dinner. It's a locals spot which ranks it even higher in my book.

My first time to El Comal. Great authentic New Mexican food in a simple, clean place. Super friendly staff, too. Don't hesitate to go there. I took my second chili relleno back to Colorado for my wife to enjoy.

While visiting Santa Fe I ate breakfast here every morning and never ate the same thing twice, except the sopapillas (we'll talk about that later). The food was always amazing and the portions generous. Their red chili was on point. Sopapillas were fluffy and crispy and edible either savory or sweet. With my breakfast and red chili, they were the perfect addition to eggs and bacon. After the meal with a little honey drizzled on top, it was the wrap to amazing food. Thank you all so much!!

El Comal had one of the best ground beef burritos I have ever had! Not only was the burrito fire but it was served so fast. I had to beers as well. The waitress was on top of her game always poured us water when our glasses were low. That's what I call service! The vibe was chill and it seemed not to be to fancy of a restaurant but some where to bring the family for a quick and delicious dinner.

Don't be fooled by the look of this restaurant. Top class food of New Mexico style food. We had a combo each and it includes everything we wanted including carne adovada, which is such a delight!!! Margaritas was similar to what you get in Mexico, very good. It's not sour or too sweet, just the right balance. The price for food and drink was very reasonable compared to what you might pay in downtown area. It came with sopapilla. It was god but we were so full that we took some home. Next morning we had it for breakfast but it got so tough even after microwave. We suspect it might.... At least we enjoyed it yesterday. We are very happy to find this hole in a wall restaurant. We highly recommend this eatery!!!

Downtown restaurants too crowded? Take a drive out Cerrillos to El Comal. We had a delicious lunch in a relaxed atmosphere. The food was comparable to any around for authentic New Mexican food. Don't let the sign saying Spanish and American food fool you, it is NM. The plates are huge. I ordered the tamale plate consisting of two tamales Christmas style, rice, refried beans and posole topped off with the biggest sopailla ever. The employees were very pleasant. The ambiance is casual.

I wanted to try El Comal, but my wife wanted to try The Shed. Fortunately, The Shed had a 2 1/2 wait and El Comal got us a table right away. Food was amazing. Chips and salsa were great, green chili had perfect heat, and the steak fajitas were among the best. Honestly, these were the best sopapillas I've ever had. Will come back for sure!

We stopped here instead of waiting at least an hour for some of the more popular restaurants in town and I'm glad we did! The food came out quickly and everything was cooked well. Their specialty chile sauces definitely have a kick to them but they also have some good flavor. The fresh sopaipilla with honey felt like a welcome reward for braving the spice of the chiles lol.

Definitely worth going if you are in the area. The food is flavorful with heat. Feels like a local, inexpensive taqueria, which is exactly what it is. But, somehow is missing some of the energy. Service is adequate. Finding inexpensive food in Santa Fe can be challenging, and this place delivers.

This is a classic looks can be deceiving. The food was fabulous and the service was friendly and efficient. Don't over look this gem.

We're from outta town and wanted to try some good authentic Mexican food. Service was excellent. Waitress was very helpful. We got our meals fast. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and they were delicious. We will be back before we leave town.

While in Santa Fe, New Mexico, my wife and I had dinner at El Comal. It is located in an unassuming and easy to miss space along a strip of businesses. We were quickly seated with chips and salsa. I enjoy some heat in my salsa, but nothing prepared me for this. It burned the end of my tongue pretty good, but I continued to partake of this fiery sauce on corn chips! We ordered combo platters. The star of mine was an adovada chalupa, marinated pork in a corn tortilla cup covered with avacado. Very tasty. My plate also came with a cheese enchilada (greasy), a beef taco, rice, beans, posole and a sopailla (delicious with honey). We asked for the red sauce on the side. Good thing, since it was also very fiery. Prices were reasonable, and the meal was more than filling.

I stopped in and was pleasantly surprised. The food was amazing. I wanted a few minutes, but you have to realize one server for 14 tables. But she was great. I will go back. Oh, the Navajo Taco. Excellent!

Authentic New Mexican food by Meow Woof exhibit. The salsa is so full of flavor that we aren't use to it! Good spice and lotta heat . Go green if you're a weenie but it'll still be hot! We enjoyed the service and the food so much. Great price for the food you get! Ambiance is divey but the food is lit.

So while visiting NM we were looking for some authentic Mexican food and on our search this restaurant popped up on our search bar that was only a couple of minutes away from our stop at the local Walmart. And they did not disappoint. Small hole in the wall ,nothing fancy but the old school diner type feel. Pretty wide selection of options to choose from. Service was good and we felt welcome. Kinda seemed like alot if regulars were coming in and out and some gentleman seemed to be chatting it up amongst each other enjoying thier breakfast and coffee with no one rushing them out. Tortillas? Geez straight out of the kitchen and yes when I asked for more I had to wait a couple of minutes because they were in the process of making more, worth the wait! Anyone that has had fresh homemade Tortillas knows what I'm talking about. Very reasonable and nice portions. Check it out if your looking for small and local and not a chain

Amazing Sopapillas! Great Breakfast all day and yummy Sangria Always a must stop:) Friendly service but limited seating is the only thing, it's small. Love the music they play softly in the background.

In Santa Fe, hungry, want to avoid peak traffic & love Mexican food. Sounds like a perfect reason to stop here. Buried in a non-descript strip mall we found the door and entered. Another bonus it's a hole in the wall. Grabbed a table and our server shows up with menus & chips and salsa. Lots to choose from on the menu. I zero in on the chimichanga, with the carne adovada plate. Our food came out in no time. The Chimi was huge - simple ingredients: meat & tortilla. Red on the side - nicely hot, but lacking that smoky flavor. In additions to the usual staples on the plate there was an excellent pico de gallo. Arguably the best I've had since leaving TX and better than some I've had there. The carne adovada plate had a generous amount of meat immersed in the red sauce. The pork was tender and shredded easily. Not a fan of the flour tortilla that came with it. It was the thick cakey type. The sopapilla that came with mine was huge - light & soft with flaky exterior. Food was reasonably priced for the quantity. Definitely a hole in the wall gem.

The people in El Comal were outstanding and helpful. We ordered an assortment of plates from El Comal and everything was delicious. My three grandkids even clean their plates. I strongly recommend this place. I should know because I am from Las Cruces NM and I love my Mexican food.

Amazing Chilie Rellano Omelet. Very low key and local. Unassuming but fantastic food. Real puffy sopapillas. Parking was adequate during the weekday late morning.

The restaurant was clean. There was indoor and outdoor seating. Parking was right outside the door. Staff were great. Prices were reasonable. The sopapillas were yummy. The chile cheese fries were ok. My hubby usually gets his grub on when it comes to fries but after the first one he tried, he wasn't interested. He got fajitas and said they were ok. Some of the chips were stale. We seem to be in the minority, but this wasn't a fave for us.

I ordered the fried yucca but got half I don't know what! And it took forever! Will never return
