On the Grid : El Merendero

"Just put one foot inside El Merendero and you'll be traveling to a typical soda fountain of the fifties. Instantly you feel the need to sit down on the bar and ask for a ‘Pedro Infante’ juicy Burger (with lovely artisan bread) that adds a different touch to any burger you've tried before. If you go accompanied with your partner, those blue leather chairs are the perfect framework for sharing a milkshake. If you get the Oreo ice cream, you'll be winning many points. Located on Higuera Street in the heart of Coyoacán, Merendero has burgers for all tastes: chicken, flank steak, beef and tuna. If you want to play it safe, ask for a Tacuache, a favorite of customers thanks to great taste that give the blue cheese and caramelized onions with which it is prepared. But at Merendero there are not just burgers and milkshakes, the menu also includes pancakes, waffles, sandwiches and pizzas; all the names of the dishes characters refer to the decade we breathe inside this place. An Angelica Maria salad, a Johnny Cash hot dog or a Stan Lee sandwich." - Leolab

Very nice place for a really good hamburger!!!! The atmosphere is really cool - classic 60's diner vibe throughout the entire restaurant - great 60's music, classic soda and malt bar, and authentic decor. As for the food, the burger was delicious!!!! Great beef flavor, topped with sautéed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and avacado, served with a side of fries. The chicken tenders were a little disappointing, small and expensive for what they were. The dipping sauces they came with were amazing. The BBQ sauce was very unique, and I'm pretty sure it is made in-house. Service was top-notch, and the waitress was right on top of all my needs - even realizing that I loved the BBQ sauce and brought me more for the fries that were served with my burger.

Great desserts! I would say the ice cream recipes could improve as they taste sort of artificial. Service really friendly

I would never come back here. Amongst the worst restaurant experiences I have had. We ordered a grilled cheese and a smash burger. The “grilled” cheese was basically bread with none of the cheese melted covered in nacho cheese? The smash burger was flavourless and inedible. The fries were decent. Server never checked on us despite empty restaurant. Avoid at all costs.

They’ve really committed to the decore, and it’s so funny to find a 50s diner in Coyoacán. The waitress even spoke good English. Dropped a star because the food took a super long time. Food itself was pretty good, nothing amazing, but it tasted good and met expectations.

Great burgers, brioche buns a delicious surprise. Next time I'll make room for malts or milkshake. They look incredible. Love the diner setting and the music vibes (Cindy Lauper, Madonna).

Great burgers with great taste, great milkshakes too. Pretty cool place with a vintage atmosphere just in the middle of Coyoacán, it seems a little discordant with the neighborhood, but it doesn't matter, the place is really nice with cool music all the time. The staff guys are kind and nice.

Nice place to go with your family or to have a nice chat without noise bothering you. The music goes really well with the theme of the restaurant. The food, prices and service are really good.

Good place to have hamburgers (the order includes French fries 🍟) , they offer good variety of appetizers and their milkshakes are the best part of the menu. And if you have enough space desserts look really tasty too.

Yelp
3.5 stars rounded up to a 4 El Merendero is a cute diner with a 1950's theme. It's colorful with a chic and vintage charm. There's one TV playing a classic film on a loop and there's loud 60's music. It's small and not really a place where you see tourists. The large menu features a variety of milkshakes, hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and many more. I ordered the Rock and Roll wrap, it was good. But I really enjoyed their fried chicken burger. Desserts are fantastic, the brownies are just heavenly. Moreover, service is attentive and polite.

Yelp
This place is really good. It's a 50's themed restaurant, that offers all sorts of hamburger-hot dog-milkshake goodness. The prices are not too steep, the food is delicious (with options for vegetarians), and the place is adorable.
