El Meson Del General

This is local dish called Callos de lobina with chilli, I was recommended this by a local in previous town Creel. They catch the Bass locally in the river, it was delicious. This is uncooked fish 😉 Lovely setting inside the building but easy to miss as it’s inside hotel, staff all friendly & one of the waiters spoke English which was great help.

Service was good but the food was not what I expected. I've lived 9 years in Mexico and know the difference between a shrimp ceviche and a shrimp cocktail. Well, I definitely got a cocktail and it wasn't shrimp. Most of it was fish anyway and it was served in a glass with lots of tomato sauce. When I inquired I was told shrimp cocktail is with cooked shrimps and ceviche is with raw shrimp, which is true, but it doesn't explain the tomato juice (that I really don't like ...). If you're going to make changes to a well known recipe, please inform your customers beforehand so you don't get a bad review. Would not come again. My friends on the other hand were happy with what they ordered: fried fish fillet and shrimp. So the quality is not at stake here, it's just nice to get what you order.

Like most towns that only see tourists for one night, in this case, either at the start or end of El Chepe, repeat business is not on anyone’s mind. Nobody is coming back anyway. I found the same in Pelanque. I ordered a typical camarones in chipotle sauce. Order accepted with a smile. When the waiter arrived he explained that the dish I was getting was a “different sauce but very good” 🤣 It was good but it was more like a Chinese sauce, nothing like what I ordered. I speak very good Spanish so nothing was lost in translation. If I was a school teacher the report card would read “ must try harder”.

Mariscos are the specialty, fresh and hot, I ordered a campechana and it was really fresh and spicy

Nice atmospheric interior and patio with fountain. My friend who was born here recommended it as very good, and I did enjoy my meal. It's mostly mariscos. I'm vegetarian and had the sopa azteca. I was the only customer here (in June, midweek). Friendly attentive service. Oh, and they let me play the piano!

Actually got sick eating here once. Used to be one of my favorite places. Tortuga from the river.. It tasted spoiled.
