El Misti Hostel Ipanema

Had a great experience at El Misti. One street away from the beach is hard to beat and there are great food options around. The beds had curtains, lights, and outlets and plenty of locker space. The only downside was there’s one one bathroom per room and no communal showers elsewhere if you’re in a rush but everyone was on different time schedules so it usually wasn’t a big issue and they’re cleaned daily. The communal spaces with the bar on the ground level and the rooftop space were great. This is a very social hostel so there are always great events to join and friends to make. But was really set this place apart was the staff. They are all extremely nice and helpful answering whatever questions you have. Cristal and Jordana went above and beyond from the moment I checked in to when I sadly had to leave. Cristal helped me find activities that I loved and really made my trip special. I would absolutely stay here again.

What I loved most about El Misti is the activities and sense of community that they actively foster! They have so many activities and opportunities to meet and connect with other travelers. I’ve only been here for a day and I’ve already been to a futebol match and a bbq at Ipanema Beach! One of the volunteers, Luan, was so nice and went out of his way to make the whole experience wonderful!

Staying at El Misti Ipanema was one of the best hostel experiences I’ve ever had. If you’re a solo traveler or just looking to meet new people, this is the perfect place. The hostel makes it incredibly easy to connect with other guests through daily activities and a fun, social atmosphere. Every evening there’s something going on—beer pong, flip cup, karaoke, trivia nights—you name it. These games really break the ice and bring everyone together. It feels more like a group of friends hanging out than just random people staying in the same place. What really stood out to me were the free activities they organize during the day. From bike tours and beach hangouts to group nights out at clubs, it always felt like the whole hostel was moving as a family. The staff is super friendly and genuinely involved in making sure everyone feels included and has a great time. If you’re looking for a place that’s more than just a bed to sleep in—somewhere you’ll make memories and meet amazing people—El Misti Ipanema is the spot. Special shout out to Juanp

Perfect location with very friendly and helpful staff. They all spoke very good English which was helpful because our Portuguese was very limited. Eric especially made us feel very welcome and helped us sort out tickets to the football, gave us food recommendations and more. We stayed in an 8 bed dorm and only 1 toilet and shower between everyone was sometimes inconvenient. Otherwise, great stay.

A really good place to stay in Ipanema, which is just a couple of blocks to the beach. It features a nice bar, where you can grab yourself a caiprinha, and plenty of events where you can meet other travellers. They also operate as an agency where you can book tours and events like city tours, hikes, and surfing courses. The staff at the hostel go out of their way to make you feel welcome and will help you with all your needs to ensure your stay is comfortable - I had an unfortunate situation where my phone stopped working due to water damage. One of the staffers, Ana, went above and beyond to help me with helping me by giving me a tub of rice to remove the water from my phone and used her earring to pry open the SIM card tray so that I could transfer it to my spare phone; super helpful as I needed to call an Uber to get to the airport. All in all, I definitely would recommend this hostel for a welcoming and comprehensive experience in Rio!

Had an amazing time at el Misti hostel! The staff is awesome special shoutout to Clara and crystal. They’re very community driven and it makes for a great atmosphere. Prepare to meet many Brazilians if you come!

We stayed at el Misti for a group trip. Rooms were a bit cramped, we had 8 people with one bathroom and it was a bit much, we had our toilet broken after two nights, but they did come to fix it swiftly. But, I will say all of the staff at Misti are very nice and attentive. Joao at the bar is very nice and friendly and makes an awesome caipirinha! Front desk staff also very sweet and helpful.

I have been fortunate enough to stay at 40 hostels around the world, and this is the best one. Effy greeted me from the moment I came in, and she made me feel more comfortable being a single female backpacker. Lena and Sandra had awesome activities lined up.Joao and Lil Tiger were awesome at the bar. This hostel should get a Hoscar. It is in the best location in all of Ipanema. You are literally a block away from Posto 9. If you are on the fence of any places in Ipanema you must stay here.
