Where to Taste Mezcal in Mexico City

"El Palenquito, recommended by Tosba Mezcal’s Elisandro Gonzalez, is a mezcaleria that features small brands discovered by the owner, who sources mezcal throughout Oaxaca. The menu, written in Spanish, offers extensive details about the production methods for each spirit. Patrons can order tastings by the ounce or small pitcher and compare agave varieties, production methods, and terroir across regions. The space is dark and moody, complementing the tasting experience with snacks like chapulines." - Lauren Mowery

If you like Mezcal and a smaller venue this is the place to go. Food was average. Lacked TLC. The cocktails were ok, could have been better. But overall a pleasant experience. Cosy and with a relaxed ambiance. No parking in the area so best to walk there. On a sunny day, a great venue to start the evening. Worth a visit and enjoy the Mezcals. Price as expected in this type of venue. By the way, great DJ.

The cocktails were good, not quite as great as we had anticipated. But the star of the show was the chorizo guacamole, it was delicious.

The mezcal is always beautiful and the space is cosy. We always make a point to come here for the mezcal and service and the snacks are always tasty. The papalome is a winner 🥇

Google
Great little Mezcal bar. Offers a variety of different Mezcal’s for tasting (you can do shots but it’s more of sipping and enjoying). If you’ve never had Mezcal or love it they have something to offer. We tried a variety of really well balanced cocktails over a couple of nights. We bought a bottle of Mezcal after trying a couple of tastings recommended by the waiter who remembered us each time we visited. Both the bartender and waiter were very knowledgeable and friendly. The space has a fantastic feel with “mud” like wall tiles. Nicely dark and lit with candles. Can be an intimate space for two or small groups. Inside and outside seating. Great music, heard a mix of 60’s -90’s.

Google
Great venue for artisanal Mezcal with a cozy ambiance and friendly and informative staff. A great place to start or end an evening with amigos.

Great little spot to enjoy really good mezcal and watch the streetlife go by.

I ordered grasshoppers and the vibes here are great and the area is great. We also got the pumpkin flowers in queso

Yelp
Really awesome experience at this little bar. The vibe was very intimate but lively at the same time we got here about 10:30-11pm. We ordered the mezcal and tequila flights, and the server explained all the notes of the different tequila/mezcal being offered. We each also tried a variety of cocktails which were all tasty. The avocado cocktail was a special surprise, a little thicker than your typical cocktail but the flavors was next level.

Yelp
An amazing Mezcaleria that happens to serve food and beer too. Though there was a bowl of guacamole at our table, I passed on trying to get around the grasshoppers. I find their taste way too earthy for me. Anyway... I was here to experience the mezcal, and it was a wonderfully small place to be comfortable doing that. Going through a flight of tastes and finding a favorite I was happy to also be able to buy a bottle of it to take home. Nope, this is not something I am going to find home in the US, not even at Duty Free, heck, not even in a store here. This is small batch goodness that I would need to come back here for more and even then it would be different.

Yelp
We stopped at El Palenquito for some drinks and snacks after a long day of exploring Mexico City last week, and I had a great time! I had two (or maybe three?) Hoja Santas (one of their mezcal cocktails with kiwi, mint leaves, chayote, and pineapple juice) - it was absolutely delicious! And we shared an order with guacamole en molcajete con chapulines, which was really delicious. The service was good, and the bar is cool - great vibes, a place you could hang out for hours. Definitely a great Roma bar if you want some great cocktails and snacks!

Yelp
My friends and I were walking around Mexico City, being typical tourists and finding places to eat and drink. We luckily found this place after entering an extremely packed and humid bar nearby. Thank goodness too. We were trying to find a chill place to drink. This place is the epitome of chill. It was nice being able to sit in a candlelit bar with some of my closest friends and just talk over some drinks and some light food. I was suffering from stomach issues because of course, so I opted out of drinking alcohol for the sake of my health. The drinks were great, even my nonalcoholic one. Surprised but also not surprised to see and hear other foreigners at this bar. Meaning, it was very telling that we heard people speaking English here. And I guess it was telling that we were also speaking English (and that this review is in English).

Yelp
We came here because the wait to licorería Limantour (across the street) was way too long. We were disappointed that their cocktail list of drinks were only 4 drink options. My husband ordered a beer and asked if he could have salt and lime with his beer. They says they didn't have any limes. How do you not have any limes at a bar? When we were done drinking we told our waiter we were ready to pay and our waiter took forever to give us our bill. Service was terrible.

Yelp
Excelent. The mezcal was very good, extensive selection. Food was good and very well presented Good music. The manager was passionate telling the story of the different mezclas and the roof tiles, the ground rock even the floor tiles has their own story.

Yelp
Buyers beware! I bought a bottle of mezcal and they did not fill the bottle all the way. It was also overpriced (over 700 pesos for less than 3/4). They gave me the bottle in a brown paper bag, and I didn't notice until I got home. I paid cash and they didn't give me a receipt.

Yelp
This is a small mezcal bar that also sells beer. The space is very small with only a few tables and stools. There was one server and one bartender when I came in. They play top 40 music which is what I didn't enjoy. I'm in Mexico City and didn't want to feel like I was at another bar in LA. The mezcal list was short but great. It included mezcals that ranged from 40-55% proof.

Yelp
This place is a good find if you like mezcal. They created individual tasting flights for us (anywhere from 3-5 options) and served with the traditional orange slices and spicy salt. They're all from the same distillery so you can taste the fairly extensive collection. Highlights - the strong and smoky selection was quite good, the dry was meh, and the lights were all quite good. The guacamole was a standout snack and served with chicharones and blue corn tortilla crisps (the whole rounds vs. chips). Lowlights - Skip the Oaxaca cheese which comes cut up and you eat it with toothpicks, and also the regular crisps. Also, we wanted to try a cocktail but they only had the ingredients to make two on the menu so if you're looking for a good cocktail go elsewhere.

Yelp
This is a fun little bar to go to if you want to talk to your friends in a relaxing environment. The music was pleasant complement to the rustic palenque (mezcal distillery) interior. We easily found a table for 6 at about 8pm on a Sunday, and if you don't want mezcal or beer, my favourite cocktail was the Aguacate. A refreshing, slightly sweet mix of mezcal and avocado. With regards to mezcal they have a variety of strengths and agave plants that make this a great place to come and experience mezcal.

Yelp
Amazing drinks. Almost everything off of their cocktail menu was great. They even gave us free shots of some local distillates to try and were helpful at explaining the different varieties. It has a cozy nice little atmosphere, not too upscale, but cozy.

Yelp
I've never had mezcal before my trip to Mexico City, but now I'm a fan. The menu is simple but with a large selection and good cocktails. For a large group it might be too small but for the two of us it was very chill and comfortable. Good service as well.

Yelp
This mezcaleria was recommended to us by one of the bartenders at La Clandestina(another excellent mezcaleria in the neighborhood). Great space and it is decorated by materials relating to the mezcal production process. Really great service from Rafa, there was a great selection of mezcals and he was excited to provide us with a rare mezcal that we were told that they had and even provided us with a free taste of another rare one at the end of our night when he saw how into it we were.

Yelp
This mezcaleria is run by true, unpretentious mezcal connoisseurs. I took a solo biz trip and decided to grab a mezcal at Palenquito. I sat at the bar and Rafa and Beto, who were running it, did not hesitate to educate me on all things mezcal! The place has a chill, cozy vibe and the mezcal was great. Try the guacamole con chapulines...really unique and delicious! Totally recommend this Roma spot!

Yelp
I love this place. It is a short walk from my apartment, and I've gone there often with friends in the evening. There's a beautiful list of mezcals. The decor is really subtle and artistic, with lots of attention to the quality of the light. Excellent staff--attentive and courteous. It's been a very happy place to explore exquisite mezcal in the company of some dear friends.
