20 Must-See Places to Visit in Colombia (Updated 2025)

"Dominating the landscape near the colorful town of Guatapé, the monolithic Rock of Guatapé (Piedra del Peñol) requires a steep and difficult staircase climb but rewards you with some of the best views in the country; most visitors combine the climb with time wandering Guatapé’s vividly painted plazas and façades." - Matthew Kepnes

14 Things to Do (and 1 Not to Do) in Medellin (Updated 2025)

"A granite monolith near the colorful lakeside pueblo of Guatapé, El Peñol has over 700 concrete stairs carved into its side that you can climb for breathtaking 360-degree views; Guatapé is a popular two-hour (or longer) day trip from Medellín, and tours that include Guatapé, El Peñol, lunch, and a boat cruise typically run around 122,000 COP — I recommend spending at least one night there if you can so you're not rushed." - Matthew Kepnes

Really good option to look at, this is the biggest and nearest attraction if you are staying in Medellin. To go up it costs 30,000COP roughly $8.50 and to get there you have to climb 705 stairs (20 min climb). It’s not recommended if you have heart conditions and you still have to stop 3-4 times to catch your breath. Overall the place is very nice with a lot of food options and drinks.

Lovely town. We did manage to climb the monolith, at first easy but that 500/600 steps we start feeling it in our knees. The town Guatape is a must visit. Recommend to do this with on a day tour.

My third time here and the view never ceases to amaze me. 35.000 COP to climb so they did raise the prices a bit. Also wear sunscreen because the sun is very strong here.

We visited this interesting tourist spot with a day tour. We had quite good weather and we arrived early in the morning (around 10:30AM) when it was not too busy. At the bottom there lots of restaurants, souvenirshops and toilets. There are free toilets next to the ticketbooth so you don’t have to go to one of the restaurants where you have to pay. After you get your tickets you start the climb up. The stairs were quite okay, it took us about 20 minutes to reach the top. Here you have great views of the surroundings and the lake. There are toilets at the top as well. In about 30 minutes you can start your descend again which takes more or less the same amount of time. It was quite impressive to visit this.

Awesome place. The climb is workout with a view for sure. 30k Colombian pesos which is around 8 dollars are totally worth it.

Guatapé Mountain is an unforgettable experience—one of the highlights of visiting Colombia. The climb up the famous rock is a bit of a workout, but the view from the top makes every step worth it. The landscape is breathtaking, with stunning blue lakes, green islands, and colorful scenery stretching as far as you can see. The town of Guatapé itself is charming and full of life, with vibrant painted buildings, friendly locals, and plenty of places to eat, explore, and relax. Whether you go for the hike, the view, or just to soak in the atmosphere, it’s a place that leaves lasting memories. A must-visit day trip from Medellín—beautiful, peaceful, and 100% worth the climb. 🌄🇨🇴✨

El Peñol in Colombia will definitely test your legs — those stairs are no joke! But trust me, the climb is totally worth it once you see the view from the top. Along the way (and especially at the summit), you’ll find little shops selling fresh fruit and snacks — the perfect reward for your hard work. And if you start thinking those steps are pure torture, remember the amazing vendors who climb them every single day with supplies on their backs! So when your legs start trembling, your knees start negotiating, and your lungs feel like they’re on strike — pause, catch your breath, and take in that breathtaking scenery. Snap those photos, because every step (and gasp for air) is worth it!

Mystical and spectacular, the town is beautiful, one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The hotels and restaurants are amazing. Highly recommend a visit
