10 Best Resorts in Costa Rica for Your Next Trip - AFAR

"A secluded cloud-forest reserve of roughly 500 acres on the slopes of an active volcano, featuring 16 spacious suites and villas with gas fireplaces, a gurgling creek, and views toward the volcano. The on-site spa offers open-air treatment bungalows, a yoga deck, and a signature Conical Room, with treatments that incorporate local ingredients such as chocolate massages, volcanic clay wraps, and fruit facials. Outdoor offerings include a private trail system to three waterfalls, horseback riding, mountain biking, an adventure park for ziplining and rappelling, and immersive cultural experiences—cooking and mixology classes, bird- and night-walking tours, coffee and wine tastings, tree planting, and traditional oxcart painting—while the restaurant and bar use produce from a large organic greenhouse, free-range eggs, and on-site trout ponds where guests can even catch their meal." - Devorah Lev-Tov

El Silencio Lodge & Spa | Condé Nast Traveler

"This eco-resort in "the thickest tropical cloud forest you can imagine" spreads across 500 acres. The nearest town has the odd distinction of being renowned for ox-cart making. "Rustic Zen cottage suites" are arranged in tiers, and each has bamboo ceiling tiles, raw-wood lamps, energy-efficient lighting, and a private deck with rocking chairs. The rate includes free breakfast, and "the food is organic and delicious." All of the tropical-fusion dishes at Las Ventanas feature regional ingredients, with most of the herbs, vegetables, and fruit from the resort’s 4,000-square-foot greenhouse. Try mountain biking, or exercise body and soul on the creekside yoga deck."

"The scenic drive to Poás National Park alone makes a stay at El Silencio Lodge worth it, but you don’t need to leave the grounds to see the country’s largest active volcano. The 16 Zen cottages enjoy serene views of the steaming mass from private decks and also have gas fireplaces, outdoor whirlpool tubs, king beds, and an earth-hued color scheme that evokes the tropical setting in streamlined luxury. Fruits and vegetables from a 5,000-square-foot organic greenhouse on site are used to make continental fare (osso buco risotto, parmesan-crusted chicken) and Costa Rican favorites (cassava croquettes, tamarind pork), which are served in two elegant glass-walled restaurants. An open-air yoga studio invites you to reflect on the beauty of your surroundings, while locally sourced treatments at the spa incorporate healing ingredients like Costa Rican clay and chocolate. Those who prefer more active leisure can join the designated eco-concierge for guided hikes along the property’s private cloud forest trails, spotting waterfalls, hummingbirds, and seasonal quetzals along the way."

El Silencio Lodge & Spa, Bajos del Toro, Costa Rica - Explore & Book

"Along a winding road, deep in a cloudforest reserve, El Silencio is a very special place indeed. Step into your Suite or Villa, poised high on jungled hillside, and find chic design and elegant comfort. Out here, you're completely immersed in nature - stepping onto your balcony or lying back in your private hot tub, it's just you and the wide sky, lush forest and birds calling. The genius of El Silencio is in combining sophistication and wilderness, in harmony. Everything has been carefully considered: from the fine organic food, to the warm, personalised attention from the charming staff. The spa is one of Costa Rica’s finest, with its conical treatment room and beautiful yoga space open to the jungle - exemplifying El Silencio's attitude that nothing here should detract from the natural world. Sustainability is the guiding principle. Use El Silencio as a base for the nearby wonders of the Poás Volcano and Arenal volcanoes and Tabacón hot springs, then return to peace and pampering. Highs Magnificent valley setting with dramatic views; lie in bed and look out onto cloud forest A serious alternative to the famous Monteverde cloudforest - you'll have this forest to yourselves, see many of the same wildlife species, and it's just 90 minutes' drive from San Jose Suites and Villas are impeccably elegant and sophisticated, but the guiding design principle is contact with nature You're welcomed by locals, trained to the highest standards, combining natural Costa Rican warmth with professionalism Luxuries abound: expect private hot tubs on the balconies and luxury toiletries, plus top-notch spa treatments Imaginative cuisine created from home-grown organic ingredients Lows It's a secluded location, so if you’re looking for nightlife – El Silencio isn’t for you There are cheaper ways to experience the cloudforest, but for total immersion in nature, this stay can't be beat" - Christabelle Dilks

El Silencio Lodge & Spa (Bajos del Toro, Costa Rica) 2 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Costa Rica was doing ecotourism before anyone else was, so it’s no surprise that this most socially-minded of tropical paradises would be among the first to update the industry to fit the very current trend of green-luxury fusion. El Silencio Lodge, deep in the country’s mountainous jungle region, is luxury travel for the “Inconvenient Truth” generation." - Tablet Hotels

This is a beautiful property but you must know that it is raining, wet and overcast most of the time. The hikes to the waterfalls were tough in the mud and rain but worth the trip. My issue with this resort is for the cost, they didn't offer what I expected. The cabins were not properly vented with dehumidifiers and fans so everything from towels, shoes, sheets, clothes, vitamins were always damp. My sinuses were literally plugged the entire time. Between the food and excursions you will be spending $1,000+ a day to vacation in dark and damp cabins. We traveled to the cloud forest in Ecuador and had a much better experience. The resort there offered rubber boots, jackets, and most importantly "dry rooms" to dry out all the wet clothes and the resort was properly ventilated to keep it dry and mold free so when our hikes were done, we were comfortable. They also offered a lot more to do with gondola rides, butterfly compounds, self feeding hummingbird refuge, guided tours to the waterfalls, snacks and meals included. El Silencio has a beautiful wellness center for fitness but offers 1 complimentary yoga class a day. The rest of the time this facility just sits there. Food was expensive but very fresh and tasty. Staff was very nice and helpful but for the cost, you can definitely get a better experience elsewhere.

We had an amazing stay at El Silencio! The staff consistently went above and beyond. We traveled with our six month old and the restaurant staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating. They brought her cucumber spears (her favorite) and had a table ready for us with extra room for her stroller. The property grounds are absolutely gorgeous with several hikes and multiple waterfalls. We enjoyed the spaciousness and comfortability in the room, especially the private hot tub. I think my only “complaint” is there could have been more places to hang towels in the bathroom to reuse them, but they were replaced in the morning and at turn down service. Overall we had a wonderful trip and highly recommend staying here!

Best trip ever! I highly recommend a stay at this cloud forest retreat. My suite #16 was centrally located to everything on the property with a private jacuzzi to view the clouds moving over the mountains everyday. The lodge staff, guides, chefs, hostees, mixiologist/bartender, servers, drivers, etc. were all so attentive, friendly, and professional. Do try a volcano clay massage at the spa with Lina. She is fabulous! The food & cocktails experience is not to be missed. Cooking lessons with Chef Brendan was fantastic! The private location overlooking the river was perfect as he educated me on making local food like tortillas, stuffed cassava rolls, cilantro chicken & potatoes, and dessert sweet treats. Loved it! Horseback riding and canopy ziplining were my favorite adventure experiences. Finally,|I planted a tree by the Hummingbird Garden which I dedicated to my husband. Amazing and touching experience for me. I will always remember it, so sweet.

Our stay at El Silencio Lodge & Spa was simply unforgettable. From the moment we arrived in Costa Rica, the warmth of the staff and the beauty of the cloud forest surrounded us in the best possible way.||We were greeted at the airport by Bryam, our friendly driver, who welcomed us with a smile and took us to a fantastic local restaurant when he heard we were hungry the perfect start to our journey. When we arrived at the lodge, the front desk greeted us with genuine smiles and a refreshing drink called “agua de sapo” a cold local tea that immediately made us feel at home.||The El Silencio team made our stay feel like a dream:| • Julio & Vladimir, our bellmen, went well beyond our expectations — always gracious, proactive, and truly kind. Every arrival and departure felt seamless and cared for.| • Robert (Executive Chef) and Manuel (Sous Chef) created gourmet dishes every day at Las Ventanas.| • Manuel also led our private cooking experience and took it to the next level of culinary artistry he brought the flavors of Peru and the sea into the jungle, a tall order that he pulled off magistrally!| • Ronald, our tour guide, brought the natural surroundings to life with passion and insight.| • Nicolas at the front desk was always helpful and attentive.| • Johnny at the stables gave us an enjoyable and memorable horseback ride.| • Kenneth and Adres made us feel safe and relaxed during the zipline — professional and reassuring the entire time.| • Estefano at the bakery was an absolute sweetheart — warm, friendly, and attentive to every detail.| • Fabian should officially be recognized as the Best Host Ever — his level of care, grace, and hospitality truly made our stay unforgettable.| • Special thanks to Victoria, our El Silencio planner, who helped organize every detail with ease and care.||🏡 Our Villa: Comfort, Cleanliness & Thoughtful Touches||Our three-bedroom villa was absolutely amazing. It was always spotless, the beds were extremely comfortable, and the outdoor heated jacuzzi was kept pristine they even changed the water every single day, which was a detail we truly appreciated.||Every time we returned to the villa, a small treat awaited us like rich chocolates or freshly baked banana bread. Honestly, it felt like they were watching for us to leave so they could sneak in and surprise us! That level of attentiveness made us feel incredibly cared for.||Housekeeping was flawless, and anything we needed was brought quickly and with a smile.||💆‍♀️ Spa & Wellness||The spa was a highlight Savanah gave a deeply relaxing and professional treatment in one of the most tranquil settings we’ve ever experienced. Yoga with Karla was equally peaceful she was patient, clear, and helped us follow along with ease. It was the perfect way to connect with the surroundings and start the day.||🍽️ Dining & Atmosphere||Meals at Las Ventanas were exquisite fresh, locally inspired, and beautifully presented. The setting was elegant yet cozy, and every meal felt like a curated experience.||🌲 Nature & Adventure||We explored waterfalls, enjoyed scenic horseback rides, and took in adrenaline-filled ziplines all surrounded by breathtaking cloud forest scenery. Even quiet evenings by the fire pit with a glass of wine felt magical and grounding.||Final Thoughts:|El Silencio Lodge & Spa isn’t just a resort it’s a sanctuary. A place where peace, nature, and hospitality meet in the most beautiful way. We left feeling refreshed, cared for, and already dreaming about when we can return. One of the best travel experiences we’ve ever had highly, highly recommended!

This is a very special place. Luxury meets nature in the most soothing setting. I just returned for my 2nd visit - the first in 2021, and now with two of my friends in 2025. The addition of a new tree house style yoga studio and a new reception building with a coffee shop was a delightful surprise. The villas are amazing - I stayed in a 2 bedroom villa and the attention to detail and luxury are on point. The staff is excellent and all are extremely friendly, we were sad to say goodby to so many wonderful people we met! We did several of the experiences including the cultural experience, the coffee tasting, cooking class, yoga classes and numerous trips to their spa (the services are outstanding!). The property itself is gorgeous, there are 3 waterfalls on the grounds that you can hike to and the dense cloud forest made for a beautiful and relaxing backdrop. The cuisine and wine selection are excellent! I really only have amazing things to say about the property, staff and experience staying in this special place. If you have the opportunity to visit you will not be disappointed!

El Silencio was spectacular! The drive from San Jose is a bit cumbersome, but definitely doable. It’s such a tranquil resort with every amenity you can imagine. We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa that had a wood burning stove and hot tub in the unit. There are activities to do on site or they can book an excursion. We chose to go on the waterfall tour which was AMAZING! This resort is a hidden gem.

We stayed at El Silencio for the last couple nights of our honeymoon. If you’re looking for relaxation, this is a great place. The property is absolutely stunning and the rooms were cozy and clean. I loved that there were multiple hikes you could take on the property and they have 3 waterfalls on site. There was so much wildlife to see on the property as well! Hummingbirds everywhere. The staff here was very welcoming and helpful! My only note would be for the restaurant on property. The prices for the drinks and food is outrageous and we didn’t find the food to be that exceptional. Since the restaurant is really the only place to eat for dinner there, it would be nice if they included some more affordable and casual options for nights you don’t feel like having a “fancier” meal. I do recommend hiring a transfer service if you’re driving in from SJO. We drove up ourselves in a rental car and the road going up to the resort was a challenging drives with many steep winding roads and potholes. Overall, we loved our stay here and would come back again!

El Silencio was the highlight of our family vacation. I was traveling with my son, daughter in law, and 4 year old twins. The staff were ALL so wonderful, especially Julio who drove our cart to take us for dining and sight seeing. The landscaping was beautiful, the food beyond delicious, and the afternoon hot chocolate to die for. |Liv, the girl twin, wanted Anyale, the dining room hostess, to come home with us!
