We spotted the restaurant from a few places down and decided we had to try it since I love Mexican food. The people inside were all great. Smelling the food cooking made me even more hungry. The salsa was yummy, especially with the homemade chips. Definitely a great place to go and support if and when in Juneau Alaska. I will come back and eat if I am ever back here.

It was a great meal. Jack was amazing. He served us a customized vegetarian dish for us. The taste and experience was amazing. Complimentary salsa nachos were delicious.

Google
This was super good! I’m from CA and now live in TX and I would frequent this joint if they were where I live. The cheese enchiladas were probably the best I’ve ever had and the beef taco was super tasty! Def recommend this place!

Google
The resteraunt was good, I guess you don't come to Alaska for the spanish cuisine. I got the 2 cheese enchiladas, was ok. Thought it was interesting the enchilada sauce was made with peanut butter, so if you have a nut allergy you may want to skip this dish. The wait staff was very nice and the atmosphere was pleasant. I would probably go back just not for the enchiladas.

Google
My go to Juneau mexican restaurant. Favorite is the carne asada, but super taco is a big hit, too. Amazing servers and the cook is clearly a pro. I highly recommend it.

Google
Oof, where to begin. Freezing cold inside, and some of the worst food I've ever tasted. The chicken must have come from a can straight to the grill with no seasoning. I cannot recommend in good conscience. The one server there was quite friendly at least.

Google
So I'm from San Diego where we have the best Mex food! Of course I had to try this place in Alaska. I was not disappointed! The best salsa ever! And my chimichunga was delicious!

I came to Juneau during all the covid restrictions so I was so happy this restaurant was open next to my hotel. This Mexican joint has got to be the better Mexican places I’ve been at in Alaska. Waitress recommended the enchiladas sauce. Was so happy❤️

Yelp
I always hate posting bad reviews, but I just genuinely don't like El Sombrero. I've tried it multiple times thinking that I was just something that I ordered. But the food is just never really that great. The service is always super slow and I've had multiple waitresses that are extremely rude. The restaurant is really adorable and my husband loves this place. I just don't... Just can't get behind it.

Yelp
Great location nearby the port, easy walk in and out of town. We stayed in Juneau for over a week so parked a bit on the outskirts and found this to be a quick walk to/from the car. Service was quick and staff was friendly. They don't have high chairs so if you are bringing your little one in be prepared to use the stroller or to seat them in a chair / or at the booth. This wasn't a big deal for us and our daughter was fine using her stroller. Food was very authentic rice was fluffy and flavorful, Chile relleno had melty cheese like it's supposed to and the taco was delicious. Chips and salsa were good. Salsa was hot for my son but I dislike mild salsa and loved it. Price was very fair for the area. Thanks for a delicious meal!

Yelp
This is big, fat, sloppy Tex-Mex food with extremely friendly service in an extremely cozy atmosphere. To top it all off, they have a decent selection of Mexican lagers. What more could you want?

Yelp
Diners beware: They use peanut butter in their enchilada sauce. Food was good, but when they found out about our nut allergy they were very unapologetic about it and simply stated that it was on the menu. Problem here is that it is on the front of the menu and they handed us the menu open to the food items. We didn't see the front cover. It should have said "Peanut Butter" next to each item. In fact, we had ordered a wet burrito. Not an enchilada, so how does that make sense? I'm not one to down grade a review simply on the service if the food was good, but this is a life threatening situation that should be a bit more visible. And I have never encountered peanut butter in Mexican food (maybe mole but nothing else). So even if the food was actually good, all the stress post meal made it so not worth it.

Yelp
I had the chips and cheese and tacitos. I liked it. This restaurant is open year round for the locals.

Yelp
Great restaurant, great host. We were welcomed in and felt right at home. He took such good care of us.

Yelp
Awesome Mexican food in Juneau downtown. Lots of veggie options. Great service. We were very happy to find by accident while walking.

Yelp
We came in on a cruise and wanted something good to eat. Not a tourist trap. Boy were we surprised. People are very nice and so helpful. The plaxe is beautifully decorated. Ambiance is beautiful. The food! OMG the food. TRUE Mexican food. Great taste, great presentation. And piping hot! A true surprise! The beans were creamy, chile verde tasted like real tomatillo. Everything was delicious. The chips are homemade and the salsa has that right kick of spice. Comeingvfrom California and being a native Mexican, this is a great place to find when you are missing home. Especially a home cooked meal. When we come back to Juneau this will be a sure return to place.

Yelp
Worst Mexican food I've ever had...which is pretty hard to do. Chips were alright and it went south from there.

Thomas A.

Yelp
Coming from a Texan, I believe El Sombero has decent Mexican food found in Juneau, Alaska. The proportions were large and very flavorful. The staff is very considerate and attentive. Well done.

Yelp
Just want you come to expect in a Mexican restaurant: good atmosphere and fast, fresh food. I had tamales with green sauce and a glass of wine. Perfect for that rainy afternoon when you are hungry after a day of attending events in Juneau. Service was good, and waiter was friendly. Enjoy!

Yelp
the best mexican food you can get near a glacier. get the enchiladas. they are the best and the service? and the ambiance?! sooooo good

Yelp
Great place! We came here for lunch.. they were busy but the staff were working like crazy to get everyone seated and taken care of. Service was timely and food was great!

Rob K.

Yelp
Terrific surprise!! Very authentic Mexican food and environment. My wife and I are native to Texas and Mexico so we were unsure about Mexican food in Alaska. Wow we were so pleased. Hope you are too!
google avatar

Yelp
Fajitas are really good! Also had the chimichanga it was a good size portion. This place gets busy but the service was pretty quick and waiter/host was great.

Faith B.

Yelp
Didnt know this till i ate their homemade enchilada sauce but turns out there is finely ground almonds/peanuts in the enchilada sauce(i'm nut allergic). i took a few bites of my super burrito and quickly i noticed i was having an allergic reaction. if they had put on the menu that the sauce had nuts this would have been avoided :(

Dorit D.

Yelp
2nd best meal dying my week long stay in Juneau and BEST services. They answered my - I am sure annoying - questions dealing with my vegetarian needs. they were completely cool allowing me craft my order to fit my needs.

Anne C.

Yelp
Delicious, huge servings! My beef burrito was extremely flavorful. The salsa is just the right amount of spicy. The service was great and it was truly delightful to sit, eat, and chat.

Yelp
So good!!! Amazing salsa, enchiladas and atmosphere! I'll definitely be back!! I was looking for a good place for dinner. It's in a great location. It was pretty busy. So I stopped in. I'm staying near this restaurant and I'll definitely be back to try more on the menu. Even though it was busy, the service was great!

Yelp
Very surprised to find good Mexican food in Alaska. Although I only had the tostada, it was tasty. Even better was the hot sauce they had. Cholula! YES! Portion sizes where average. The burrito also ordered was huge and the green sauce a bit thick, but still tasty. Wait staff was super friendly, as were the cooks, as we could see them from our table. I will definitely try it again.

Yelp
i got a chicken quesadilla and it was literally one of the worst mexican food i've ever had. when i mean that the cheese wasn't melted fully, the quesadilla tasted like plain bread that wasn't cooked all the way. and to top it off it's 12$ for a half cooked bad quesadilla. i would not recommend if you want to ruin ur Mexican food palette. chips and salsa were ok which is why i'm giving it a one star.
google avatar

Suraj P.

Yelp
Their tacos were great which comes with the side of rice and beans. I was not super hungry so ordered a mini tostada, which was good but not that tasty. The service was great. I feel like everyone out there was in a hurry because we weren't finished eating but someone got the check for us. We went out and check their closing time is 10 pm on Saturday but we were there until 8:30'ish.

Hannah P.

Yelp
We did not expect to find good Mexican food in Alaska but this place was so yummy we had to go back twice. I got combo #5 both times. The shredded beef was well marinated and wrapped in a crispy taco shell. Their enchilada sauce is deliciously unique and definitely worth a try. Chips and salsa were great. Friendly staff and great service.

Yelp
There are 2 Mexican restaurants in downtown Juneau. Ate lunch at both, neither was anything special, but I live in Southern California where great Mexican food is expected. First basket of chips and salsa was free, then you have to pay. I had the beef enchiladas. Asked for spicy red sauce but it wasn't very spicy, otherwise the enchiladas were not bad.
google avatar

Jalina G.

Yelp
No bueno, it might of been super good when it first opened. After generations it lost its Mexican flavor. We ordered the nachos, correction black bean nachos for like 14$ and some flautas. Their avocado, I mean guacamole was black. The reason was because they cooked the avocado on the food... that's the first time I hear that. To me, their guacamole was old not fresh. It's juneau, I know so don't say it's fresh when it is not.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here to have lunch since it was close to the pier. The service was terrible and could not get a simple bean burrito correct for my kids. Came with chicken, beans, and cheese the first time. Then came with beans and cheese the second time. After the adults finished, the third burrito with just beans finally came out. When we asked to talk with the manager, they said the owner was here but was too busy cooking to talk with us. Would not recommend going to this place if you change anything from the standard menu items.
google avatar

George L.

Yelp
The food is good but they should have more options. You basically get one of three types of meat with beans and rice. That's the entire menu. It's just up to you if you want it all wrapped or just flat. They really need to step up their game and have some authentic items that are different. Maybe do a two month thing where they do a different item for one week only each week and let the public vote so they can add items to the menu people would be happy to pay for. It would make sales go threw the roof.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
We went here for dinner during our time in Juneau. It was pretty standard Mexican food but nothing really stood out about it. I had the chicken fajitas and my family had several other Mexican dishes. I guess being from L.A. gives you a standard for Mexican food that is hard to beat. El Sombrero was decent, not great. Oh and another thing, the first basket of tortilla chips is free. They charge $7 per basket if you want more! WTF?!? I have NEVER seen this before at any Mexican restaurant.
google avatar

Katy H.

Yelp
Average food that comes a little pricey. Exactly what you would expect from a small town restaurant, you could take it or leave it.
google avatar

Trace D.

Yelp
This is a good place to eat. I ordered the super taco. It was awesome. I loved the golden fried flour shell. Didn't care for the salsa. It was thick like tomato purée, similar taste too. The rest of the menu looked good as well. Beware, no liquor license, but they do have a bottled substitute that's pretty good. I'll go back.
google avatar

Linda W.

Yelp
The service was good - very nice staff. The food was not good unfortunately. If you are from So Cal do not eat here - you will be disappointed. Ugh.
google avatar

Yelp
I decided to try this place because of some reviews here on Yelp. Well while it was not the best Mexican food I've had, it wasn't horrible. I got a super burito, and forgot to tell them no enchalada sauce. (My fault) The sauce overpowered everything in the burito. The lettuce on it was foul tasting as where the tomatoes. (Easy enough to scrape off) The guacamole was not guacamole, just mushed Avacado nothing else. Now the only real redeeming thing was what was inside the burito. After some excavation, I found the shredded beef was FANTASTIC, the rice was tasty and I love refried beans to begin with. They also gave me some chips and salsa. The chips where good, they had a cheesy/sour cream like after taste.(strange but not off putting.) The salsa was meh, no real taste to it. I don't think I'll be back, too expensive for the sub parr food.

Yelp
I'm embarrassed to see so many bad reviews from cruise passengers. You make us all look like jerks. We had seen this place before, but it closed just as we were about to go in. This trip we looked for it and almost missed it. They have five tables and minimal staff. They did the best they could. The food was wonderful. The service was great.

Yelp
THE BEST TACOS IVE EVER HAD! No joke. It doesn't even make sense. Could I be any farther from Mexico?? Lol. I'm from Chicago where its practically Mexico. I've had steak tacos all my life. I've had tacos in Mexico. These are just perfect. The tortillas are corn and literally a cross between hard and soft shells. The steak was juicy, cooked perfectly and seasoned. The tacos came with rice and beans. They also have Tecate.. Which.. Duh. Its like a wine pairing for tacos. My group also had the steak fajitas, seafood fajitas, and another order or steak fajitas. In total we also had 3 beers and 1 soda. Everyone agreed how good the food was. We were all surprised.. I mean.. Were in Alaska! ... But notice the 3 stars.. When we walked in we were warmly greeted by our waiter, we sat down, ordered drinks and about 5 minutes later ordered our food. The food took a long time to come and we didn't get our drinks until after the food came. In fact, I had to ask for the drinks after our food came. It was about 10 minutes after that when we got them. I'm not sure what the issue was. He literally had to open 3 bottles of beer. It was crazy! Needless to say we didn't have more because honestly we were done eating before our drinks were finished. So the service brought the 5 star food down to 4 stars. Then the bill came. Let me just say that I've eaten at expensive restaurants all over the world. I enjoy a good meal and im willing to pay for it. But this place is a hole in the wall Mexican joint. If u remember I stated we had 2 orders of fajitas, 2 orders of tacos, 3 beers and a soda. OUR BILL WAS $138!!!!! I don't even think I need to write anymore as your jaw probably just dropped. So ill leave you with that... $138!

Yelp
The food was good and plates were hot which is how you want your mexican food served so Yea for that!! The service was good and friendly and didn't take long for food to arrive, my only disappointment was that they did not have real margaritas, the menu kinda led me to believe they did but, margarita wine drink that comes in a bottle, I've never heard of such a drink! Other than that, if you want mexican food this is a good place to eat!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was a little rocky, waiter was very shy. : ) Salsa is excellent as is their rice! Just like my abuelita's! Beans, meh. Prices are a little high, may be I'm adjusting to the higher food prices in AK. Great atmosphere. Will dine here again!

Yelp
We decided to have lunch here during a break on our Alaska cruise. Service is awful - it's now been an hour and we haven't had our food. What a disappointment while you are on vacation. I do not recommend unless you are willing to wait all afternoon.

Yelp
We came to El Sombrero for lunch during our trip to Juneau , Alaska and we were so pleasantly surprised. Our server Jake was very pleasant, and recommended the Burrito Especial. I don't think I've had a better burrito ever. And the Enchilada sauce was very authentic. A little out-of-the-way from the regular tourist area but so worth it.

Yelp
By far one of the best restaurants in Juneau! Great atmosphere and the food is incredible. Always one of my first stops on a visit to Juneau.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of Juneau. I came up here from Arizona and was surprised to find authentic Mexican food in Alaska. The staff is all amazing, friendly and especially funny. They take your dining experience to another level. Anytime I am there the locals that come in and talk with them like they are long lost best friends. 10/10 would recommend a visit. (Try the chimichanga with steak) kekha2-pezVan-hysbet

Yelp
I just want to start out by saying the food was good. I had the macho nachos, my daughter had a quesadilla, my nephew had tacos and my sister in law had a burrito. The salsa and chips were good. As with a lot of businesses in Juneau at the moment the wait staff was limited. There were three people working and two of them being new employees. It is a small place and it was fairly busy so waiting to be seated and time to order took awhile. We weren't asked our drink orders and they didn't have children's cups. However the staff did try their best and there was a man who I assume was a long time employee or manager that was apologetic and told us thank you for being patient, he also explained being extremely short staffed.
google avatar

Melanya M.

Yelp
This is my all time favorite Mexican restaurant! They have amazing enchilada sauce that is a little bit spicy and its very unique. I love their chips and salsa, always get some extra to take home with me when I'm in town. Their flan is always perfect, every single time. The fajitas are to die for. They have the best ranch dressing, their fries are ridiculously good because they fry them in the same oil they use for the fried tortillas. They are always friendly and fast. It's a family run business that my family has been going to since they opened in the 70's. This is always my first recommendation for food in town.

Dirk M.

Yelp
Our waiter was great and the food was average to good. Have to give them low review for unprofessional way one of there staff acted as we left, he/she followed us out and asked if one of our party was so and so Representative. He said "yes" and he/she said, "I'm not speaking for the Restaurant but you're a terrible person..." I use to go to this place a lot. I won't be going back. I'm afraid of what a person like this would do to my food or the food of any person they disagreed with.
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
Okay this is ridiculous - my waitress was excellent!, but here's the deal. I sat for dinner and ordered CHICKEN and bacon mascarpone macaroni & cheese along with a glass of wine. Appetizer came, and 2 minutes later the main dish (chicken...). Appetizer good, main dish - uh, main ingredient missing! Where's the CHICKEN? Noted the missing main ingredient to the waitress, she's embarrassed and takes the plate back to the kitchen, issue corrected - now I don't complain to get anything free, but I at least expect an apology or come on comp the drink - nothing! I did enjoy my dinner, but this Duh! moment with no mea culpa moment soured me. Can you say Attention to Detail?
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
Extremely friendly people and excellent food. Had the tamales with verde sauce. Can't go wrong. Chips and salsa were great which is a must for me. If you're thinking you can't get good Mexican food in Alaska, think again. Try this place. Oh, by the way, the beans are as good as any I've had anywhere.

Lilly M.

Yelp
The food was salty salty. I got a cheesecake with plastic wrapping on it. That's all I have to say
google avatar

Caitlin P.

Yelp
I found a piece of paper in the bottom of my hot chocolate and my friend ordered cheese beef taquitos and she didn't get the cheese and it tasted like fish.

Charles A.

Yelp
Very good for Alaska Mexican restaurant. Flavors come together quite nice. Salsa is a thicker paste consistency that some may not like. Quick, attentive service. I had the taquitos with rice and beans.
