The Mayan Tazumal site in El Salvador offers an outstanding museum that’s very well presented, labeled and maintained. We had a guide, bring us through the entire outdoor temple space and on the indoor museum tour. The indoor tour is in Spanish, so it will help if you know how to speak Spanish. The museum site is actually maintained by the French so much of the museum descriptions are in French even on the signs on the outdoor sites.
The entire tour took us about 45 minutes to an hour, and it was well worth it. The history of how these were built is fascinating and it tells a great story about that time period and the current El Salvador people. 🇸🇻
There is even an ancient sports field behind the temple which is believed to be a gameplay much like soccer. ⚽️ The field is actually an optical illusion that appears to be a warped rectangle, but it’s actually perfect in dimensions as a rectangle.
PRO TIP: When you leave, there is a great little restaurant right across the street that serves deep fried yucca and pupusas. This will probably be the best deep fried Yucca in the country. 😋
