This Caribbean Destination Has Bioluminescent Waters and Gorgeous, Uninhabited Islands — and It's a Short Flight From NYC

"El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system. The park lives up to the distinction with nearly 29,000 acres of dense rainforest inhabited by geckos, mongoose, bats, and 97 bird species. Perhaps most spectacularly, there are more hiking trails than roads in El Yunque, making the park a hiker's paradise — with 24 miles of trail leading to clear mountain rivers, waterfalls, and even a high-altitude elfin forest." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Amazing views, great experience, make sure you wear comfortable, breathable clothing and hiking shoes if you plan to walk the trails.

The rainforest and scenery were beautiful. The roads can be quite narrow and some of the drivers can be erratic. I went on a guided tour and was thankful they knew how to drive and navigate the area.

Went here walking from Luquillo with some friends, not the first time, and we ate at te peak watching the sunset. I 100% recommend it

We visited El Yunke with an excursion and it was worth it. The hike is not too long and there is plenty of shade. Take lots of snacks and water and must wear water shoes. There is a lot of mud and rocks.

Absolutely beautiful and amazing. Easily one of my favorite places in the world.

Absolutely breathtaking! The random rain showers were so refreshing while walking up a trail. Only reason why I’m giving it four stars is because the parking is very limited towards the main attractions. Also, police were constantly giving out tickets to anyone who was parked in a no parking zone.

Just beautiful…. You can drive up the mountain. birds singing and view is breathtaking. Just go early in the morning to find parking spots. Cover your whole body and soak yourself in mosquito repellent. Otherwise you will be eaten alive and bits are itchy beyond imagination.

Incredible experience. We did Juan Diego Falls (turn right for the Upper Falls; it was worth the short hike). We also did the iconic Mt Britton (easy hike, but many steps so be careful if you have health conditions). Lastly, we went to Angelito Trail which was such a relaxing way to depart from El Yunque. The water was refreshing and there weren’t many people there at all. As of January 2025, reservations are not needed for El Yunque nor is there a cost. I do recommend getting there early though because parking can be annoying to find later in the day. Tip: the visitor center has a refill station with a clean bathroom and interactive exhibits (there is an $8 fee).
