16 Off the Beaten Path Attractions in Amsterdam (Updated 2025)

"As the world’s first museum dedicated to fluorescent light (open since 1999), Electric Ladyland offers guided, interactive tours where naturally fluorescent minerals and manmade objects light up under black light, and there’s even a participatory art section where visitors can become part of the exhibit — it’s far from a typical gallery and must be booked in advance." - Matthew Kepnes

A really interesting and unique experience. It's sort of a one-room museum very personal to the owner, Nick. He really knows his stuff and creates some of the art displayed with his girlfriend. The pictures don't do it justice. I would recommend getting tickets in advance, sometimes you get lucky (we just arrived and got in with just 3 random other people) but sometimes he doesn't feel like it (which I totally understand) or it might be too full (the group after us had probably 15 people and the room is just too small and hot to accommodate that many). So I imagine your experience will vary. If you're lucky to get in with a small group you'll see a unique perspective and he'll be able to answer any questions you might have.

Cute, but cluttered, little fluorescent art shop, with a little museum in the basement. Recommend booking a time in advance, as not many people can fit. The art, some (much?) of it created by the women running the shop is interesting, and while not exactly my style I know some people who would love the colours and look of the pieces. The museum below is just as big (or small) but less cluttered. The walls and cases are filled with all sorts of things that glow under black light. The guy who gives the tour is more than full of info all about the history, science, background, and all manner of knowledge of fluorescence! Seeing the art upstairs is cool, seeing the objects downstairs is super interesting, but really: you should be coming to listen to him and his stories and information. If you have any interest in this (and I didn't know I did before I went!) it's worth the price of admission to hear all the info. He's right, most people leave before he's done, but they're missing the best part: stories illuminated by black light.

It is amazing place where you can get interesting tour. The entrance fee is only 5 euro, (only cash) it’s cheap for such quality and timing. I like nice lady from India and her husband from US who opened this place. They are kind and have big life experience. They collected these unusual rocks from different countries and now they have huge collection in the basement. I highly recommend you to visit it!

Tours go in around once every 30 minutes I think. It's literally a dude's basement and it's a bit tight but the people there are really worth it. While I waited for the tour to start, I hung out upstairs with a very nice lady Michele, who had a lot of really fascinating facts about the art and the science behind it. Nick, who gave the tour, had infectious passion for the subject and I think I could probably talk with him all day about his work. One of the few museums I've been in where I felt I really learned something more than random facts and figures. If you go in expecting some super polished and professional "museum" I'd say you might be out of place. Go in with an open mind and treat this as a social/cultural experience and you'll have a blast.

If I could give it ten stars I would. This place may be tiny, but it's an absolute Aladdin's Cave full of amazing & unexpected treasures. The main ones being its proprietors, Michele and Nick, from France & the USA - tourists for 38 years, he said. She's charming, & he's hilarious, & full of brilliant stories and wonderful information. It's only €7.50 per person (my son paid €5 because he's a student) & they say you'll spend half an hour to an hour there, but we were there nearly 2 as we were getting on so well. He stayed open late as we were chatting a lot. As for the exhibits, they're so cool and beautiful! Make sure you see everything under both types of UV light! Stuff they've made, stuff they've collected, and so much info about the history of florescent paints etc. I want to go back after some mushrooms! 💓💓💓 We had to wait to enter but didn't mind as there's an excellent café beside it- Jenifer St!

Absolutely fancy Gallery! The owners are really passionate and have a great knowledge about phosphorescence and fluorescence. Be sure to not mistake these! The place is a little bit small and crammed up, though. Still, the experience is totally worth it and there's no reason to complain about the entrance fee since you can count the amount on the fingers of one hand!

What an incredible little museum! The owner is really cool and I loved hearing his stories. The artwork he created was amazing and filled with surprises when you look closer. I wish he could transform a whole house like that! Overall, this was a magical experience and I learned a lot as well. I am an artist and designer and was really impressed with this whole other world that is right under our eyes but remains unseen.

A must-see in Amsterdam. Disclaimer!! It is only open to visit every hour, so make sure to plan ahead. The place is a 2-part art store and gallery where two fluorescence artists share their passion, the origin and use of fluorescence in art. The home made sculpture is also a perfect instagram spot. Though, you should come for the whole museum even if you may found deep explanations boring.
