Global Vision Awards 2024

"A roughly 300-acre sanctuary near Chiang Mai that rescues and rehabilitates elephants, rejecting rides and performances in favor of observational visits, volunteer opportunities for feeding and care, and educational experiences that seek to transform guests into ambassadors for elephant welfare." - Travel + Leisure Editors Travel + Leisure Editors Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. Southeast Asia Itineraries: From 2 Weeks to 3 Months

"I found Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai to be a phenomenal elephant sanctuary that rescues abused and injured elephants from around the country; it’s a place that makes clear why you should never ride an elephant, and a one-day visit costs about 2,500–3,500 THB for adults." - Matthew Kepnes

How to Ethically See Elephants in Thailand (Updated 2025)

"Led by Lek Chailert, Elephant Nature Park (ENP) has operated since 1996 as Thailand’s biggest elephant rescue and conservation organization and serves as a retirement home for dozens of elephants and a menagerie of other animals saved from the tourism and logging industries; located outside of Chiang Mai, demand for visits and volunteer placements is so high that you often must reserve months in advance. I visited after booking ahead and saw firsthand the good they do and the heartbreaking stories of elephants with broken backs, legs, and missing feet; ENP has also worked with riding camps to help them give up riding and adopt more animal-friendly practices. Note that you can no longer feed or bathe the elephants there so their natural schedules aren’t disrupted, but you can still watch them eat, bathe, and get up close. Practical details: short visits last about 6–7 hours and cost 2,500 THB (includes a vegan lunch buffet and transportation to/from Chiang Mai), the popular overnight visit (2 days, 1 night) costs 5,800 THB (meals, transport, accommodation included), and a 7-day volunteer experience is around 15,000 THB." - Matthew Kepnes

Absolutely amazing experience. You could tell the elephants were safe and cared for with no tourist or even staff members other than care takers allowed to touch or feed the elephants (this is how it should be!). Our guide was so knowledgeable and had so much to tell us about each elephants history and where they had been rescued from. We got the over night package, well worth the money for the things you get to do. We also got to visit the cat sanctuary, prepare a cake for an elephant and enjoy an evening watching them wander as the sun went down. We met some lovely people there and the food was excellent too. Was a vegetarian buffet but this changed between breakfast and lunch and was some of the tastiest food we’ve had here yet!! All round amazing ethical experience.

Where to even start ? I have spend 1 week as a volunteer in elephant Nature Park and this trip has been an eye opener on so many things. I would recommend anybody for a day trips or better volunteering program to come here and learn about the elephants. This is the biggest and most ethical elephant park in Thailand and the care of the nature park is amazing. We were able to volunteer without interfering with elephants natural habitat. Our guide Su has been the most amazing tour guide and person, very caring and funny and he has a lots of knowledge! I can’t recommend this place enough! I will be back for sure, it truly feels like a surreal experience to be in such a peaceful place.

Loved this experience. I really took my time to find an ethical place to meet some elephants—no touching, feeding, bathing, etc. and despite that, you still get the opportunity to get up close to them. They are living their best life in this park and it was so nice to learn about such an amazing organization. The food was fantastic too.

This is a really special place. After researching ethical elephant sanctuaries we booked here for the full day walking experience. It's truly a place that cares about the elephants, there is no riding or bathing. The day involved being picked up at our hotel and arriving at the sanctuary. We walked through the park and our guide told us all about the elephants and knew each one by name. It was truly magical. We then went to the second part of the sanctuary and had a buffet lunch, this was delicious. We then made up snacks for the elephants before hand feeding them. Finally we walked with the elephants for them to go swimming in the river. It was a really good day out and if you are looking for a truly ethical experience this is the place to book!!

We decided to try this nature park out after doing quite a bit of research on which parks seemed to be the most ethical in Chiang Mai area. We opted for the 2D1N package, including an overnight stay, being picked up + dropped off and all our meals included. The park itself was amazing, and all the volunteers that we met. Especially our first tour guide, Mos. He was so informative and made you feel as if you were really learning about each elephant and how different their lives are now compared to before. Honestly the only downside was the room not having AC, it did have a fan, so for one night it was bearable. I would highly recommend this place as you really feel as if you are just being present with the elephants with nothing feeling forced or them being pressured.

One of my favourite places in the world! You learn about elephants, ethical caretaking and the work of rescuing and rehabilitating them from tourism, logging and breeding. The elephants live amazing lives out here, with no props or chains used to control them - they can roam freely. The park also educates and supports local communities, and houses hundreds of water buffaloes, dogs, cats and cows - many who roam freely with each other. We loved our overnight stay. The lunch buffet was the best food we’ve had in Thailand.

What an amazing experience! We booked onto the ‘Walking with Elephants’ tour, which was a small group and slightly more expensive than the half-day visit. We were able to get very close to the elephants without it feeling too forced or uncomfortable. What was very obvious from our visit was how much the park cares for and looks after the 117 elephants there. They are free to roam wherever they please & clearly have wonderful lives there after being rescued from unethical tourism etc. Our guide Phrom was so much fun, he gave us loads of information on the elephants & the park, showed us how to make their favourite food & made sure we were all comfortable and had a great time. The food provided was also incredible! A huge buffet of vegetarian & vegan food!! So many options - all amazing. If you’re looking for an ethical elephant sanctuary please choose this one, it will not disappoint.

Incredible place, beautifully managed and the elephants genuinely look happy and healthy! Love their mission to protect all elephants. We were able to walk around and see the elephants up close. They keep the even-tempered elephants that all have their own families and groups in the area where they can hang out and play as much as they like. No riding or shows, simply seeing them live their lives and walking amongst them as they do whatever they want to do like eating, playing, running around and wading in the river!
