"Fuss-Free Eating at Elias At Elias, a quaint little eatery located next to the National Gallery (another afar.com highlight), you’ll find exciting food at competitive prices. The people at Elias focus on fuss-free food: organic drinks, hand-brewed coffee, Norwegian beers, and solid homemade food – not a latté, Coca Cola or Pepsi in sight! The walls display different works of art throughout the year, and music sessions are often held here. A centrally located foodie destination that you certainly won’t find anywhere else."

Good Norwegian style food in the downtown area. Helpful and friendly service staff. Efficient service. Small/cozy space. Reasonable selection of drinks. They have 3-course menus too. Tusk fish was good, but it tasted average.

I have to admit I give many chances to Norwegian cuisine and this restaurant was very cozy and lovely. From the decor, service and prices and food. The service was excellent the waitress Kim even asked me if I have any allergies or if i dont like any kind of herbs and spices when I asked her to suggest me some dishes. I had the seafood soup and the reindeer pie. Loved the soup it was a big portion for my surprise and full of seafood (unlike other soup I had in other places). The reindeer pie was delicious as well. Definitely will come back

Google
Yummy!! Reindeer stew was delicious! Grilled salmon was somehow even better! Cusk was just okay— cooked well (I think) but the fish is just a little tougher than I would’ve liked. Great service and beautiful interior. Definitely would recommend!

Google
first time trying whale and really liked it! panna cotta was also delicious. the reindeer stew however was enjoyable but fell a little short of expectations considering how much praise it got from other reviews? not as spectacular as we wish it would've been. still a lovely meal overall

Google
I tried smoked whale meat for the first time at this restaurant. Food was delicious. As a main, I had the cod and my friend reindeer stew. The establishment is located conveniently in the center of Oslo. Lots of pubs around to grab a drink at afterward.

Google
One of the best meals I’ve had since coming to Oslo. The minke whale entree was sensationally cooked and presented. The deer stew/casserole was also excellent and the leek soup and Atlantic Cod my colleague ordered was also thoroughly enjoyed. Table service from our waitress was excellent making this a highly recommended restaurant if you want to try some traditional Norwegian cuisine. Would love to return here in future.

Google
I had the oven baked salmon, which was very very tasty, one of the best I’ve had so far. The waiter was very nice, a 5* experience overall

Google
a fantastic experience at this place on the fjord. Kind, attentive, fast and professional service. the salmon is fresh and served in a very elegant way. really good. highly recommended

Yelp
Super delish food. Great portions. Really cute ambiance. The only issue was the mediocre service. They were nice but kinda inattentive. Definitely make a reservation because it is small and seems like it gets busy. At least for dinner.

Yelp
The ambiance is quite nice and the food selection is top tier. So far the best food i e had in Oslo.

Yelp
Elias Mat & Sant is located just around the block from the Hotel Bristol where Gayle and I were staying. We were one of the few lucky walk-ins this past Sunday evening as during our meal, we lost count of the number of folks who were turned away from this nicely appointed and cozy restaurant. Plus our corner table near a window was a perfect semi-private date night spot. The only partial negative about our experience was that the service was sometimes "distracted" which we feel was a "short staffed" situation, exacerbated by a full house and the before mentioned folks who couldn't be seated. This made us appreciated the kindness of the staff person who seated us even more. Elias Mat & Sant has a good online (and reservation friendly presence) which I highly recommend that folks wanting to dine here use. There are of course lots of other dining options in the area, but it was clear by the bustle and the menu that this place is a special choice. I chose the oven baked salmon, which was served with vegetables, celery root puree and small potatoes. Gayle's meal as seafood stew, which included while Gayle went for the seafood stew (crab, prawns, crayfish, mussels, scallops and cod in tomato sauce with fresh herbs, garlic and chilli). Her choice included grilled garlic bread, while the bread for the table was also included as part of our meals. The restaurant menu also offered some wine pairing recommendations of which who chose (and agreed) accordingly. It was a fantastic meal, although Gayle's seafood stew did require a bit of "work". On that note, a shell cracker would have helped. We finished our dinner off by splitting a dessert (thick milk panna cotta served with mullet sauce and hazelnut crokan) and 2 really great cups of locally sourced black coffee. And when we were done, a nice walk around town was in order.

Yelp
Food was great and flavorful. Great service. Beautiful restaurant. The Norwegian entrecôte was very flavorful, tender and the vegetables very fresh. The reindeer stew was delicious. We paired everything with a nice red wine.

Yelp
This was a great find for a taste of traditional Norwegian cuisine. The atmosphere is cozy and our group of 7 had no problem conversing. I never thought I would eat reindeer, but the reindeer stew was hearty and tasty.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food and excellent service in this cozy restaurant. Our server and all of the staff were very friendly. The food portions were appropriate and nicely plated. The salmon was excellent! The lamb ribs and sausage was also very good.

Yelp
Loved of Norwegian meal after a difficult parking situation at our hotel. Decent beer selection and great starters. Smoked whale and the cheese plate went good with local Pilsner and brown ales. Reindeer stew is must try item here no exceptions ! Great meal in Oslo.

Dar Z.

Yelp
Great service and ambiance! We tried the elk carpaccio, pumpkin soup, reindeer stew, whale meat, halibut and the sheep and cabbage. Most were good but weren't amazing. Everything was just a little bland for our taste but the service and ambiance makes up for it and recommend others try out especially since the prices are very reasonable compared to other places

Krista S.

Yelp
This restaurant had excellent Scandinavian food and great service! We enjoyed trying some unique (to Americans) meals here including reindeer stew!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful food -- every course was great and the staff was kind and helpful. We had the reindeer stew amd the baked salmon and fish soup. All top notch. Wish I'd eaten here both nights!

Joanne Z.

Yelp
We wanted to have fresh fish on our last day in Oslo and looked through many reviews to choose this restaurant for the fish of the day- sea bass. Unfortunately, it had a funny smell and taste. That night I felt terrible and felt the symptoms of food poisoning. Compared to the sea bass we had at the restaurant at our neighboring hotel Lysebu, for the same price, this fish dish was below average in quality and presentation... very disappointing experience on our last night. This review is for value and quality of fish of the day.

Yelp
Excellent meal! Dinner with friends and traveling buds. Fish stew, halibut and a shared reindeer stew. All delicious. Portions quite large and shareable. Limited but nice wine selection. Great service. Unpretentious casual place worth revisiting.

Yelp
Great dinner! We started off with some complimentary bread which was so tasty! I had the oven baked salmon with vegetables. It was perfectly cooked and so tasty. I sampled the reindeer stew which was also excellent, the pieces of meat were small and had excellent flavor. Definitely stop here for Norwegian food!

Yelp
Best meal we had during our 11 day Norway stay. The service was excellent and the space while small is cozily chic and authentic. We enjoyed the smoked whale, baked salmon, reindeer stew and chocolate fondae (sp?) -- all were better than good -- they were orgasmic! And the special Ligonberry Gin & Tonic and Elias special drink were tasty too! Highly recommended!!

Tessa B.

Yelp
Small and cozy Norwegian brasserie...loved the sampler board and loved the pickled fish! Seafood stew was amazing and the halibut entree excellent. Desserts were amazing.
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
Enjoyed a couple classic Norwegian dishes. Lovely atmosphere and great service. Food was delicious!

Yelp
A small restaurant in downtown Oslo with less than 50 seats serving exquisite Norwegian food Elk Carpaccio garnished with a ridiculously delicate salad, lingonberries on the side to add an edge of sweetness Mushroom soup Reindeer stew...what else on the side but lingonberries ? Lamb shank (with mashed potatoes + the lingonberries) Cheese plate with their famous bread and some non-lingonberries on the side to add sweetness A bottle of Valpolicella Norway is not cheap, and this meal cost NOK 2,000 inc optional tip which is about $185 at today's exchange rate Compared with NOK 1,600 for 2 simple (but very good) burgers at another place gives you some idea of the sticker shock Americans get in the beautiful capital of Norway Notwithstanding the prices, Elias Mat & Sånt is well worth visiting to taste traditional cuisine in a superb owner-operated restaurant You will not be disappointed

Sushi6268 S.

Yelp
The food and service was great, salmon and the reindeer stew was the best we had. The service was very friendly. You can tell they enjoy making food

Carolyn C.

Yelp
Delicious seafood and cocktails. Friendly staff. Atmosphere was very welcoming. I highly recommend this place for typical Norwegian food with a sophisticated flare.
google avatar

Carie M.

Yelp
This was an amazing meal. We had authentic Norwegian and Sami food with a great ambiance. The service was excellent. We were fortunate to get in without a reservation, but would recommend those visiting to get one. Highly recommended!!

Yelp
This place is incredible, wonderful service, great drinks, and great food. My husband and I both had the barley risotto, mine with mushrooms and his with chicken, and they were both amazing! Plus the fresh home made spinach bread was DEVINE, I could've eaten a criminal amount of it. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
We walked in right as the kitchen closed. He graciously seated us and we opted to let the kitchen choose our meals. We had reindeer shank and organic salmon, both of which were delicious. I highly recommend this lovely place! We'll be back.
google avatar

Athena K.

Yelp
The food was good. There was only one waiter working on the day but his service was fast. All the food was delicious and on the salty side, but seems like that's how it is for most Scandinavian restaurants we've tried so far.

Yelp
On our quest for elk meat, we found this restaurant on yelp with good reviews. There is a little sign on top the restaurant, and the door to the restaurant is to the left and up the stairs after entering the building. We were seated immediately without a reservation. We got the Chef's Recommendation, a set menu consisting of Elk Carpaccio, Reindeer Stew, and Cloudberry Panna Cotta, for 498 NOK, along with the Clipfish Carpaccio (145 NOK) and King of the Forest (Braised Elk, 295 NOK). The Elk Carpaccio was probably my least favorite - it was thinly sliced served with parmesan and lingonberries. The meat was a little too gamey for my liking. The Clipfish Carpaccio was very good, sliced a little thicker than the elk, served with sundried tomatoes and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. The Reindeer Stew was served with vegetables and mashed potatoes. I've had reindeer steak before, which was pretty gamey, but in stew form, the meat was very soft and the taste was much milder. The King of the Forest was four pieces of braised elk, with potatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, lingonberries, and game sauce. The meat was fairly soft and cooked well, and the sauce complemented it nicely. The Panna Cotta was served with cloudberry syrup and almond nougat. The panna cotta itself was very rich and creamy, and the cloudberry syrup, which tastes like baked apples, was just the right amount of sweetness. The almond nougat was a little too bitter for me. Our total came out to about 1200 NOK, including the food and two drinks, which is around $150 USD.

Nicole T.

Yelp
Delicious food and wonderful ambiance. My husband had the reindeer stew and I had the risotto. They were both so good. The service was excellent.

Jim T.

Yelp
I had the reindeer stew. It was the best meal I had had after traveling a month across the UK and Norway. Go out of your way to try this reindeer stew!

Cindy T.

Yelp
Fantastic meal! I highly recommend reindeer stew and the veal. SO SO good! Quiet place and great service. A perfect place to get a real taste of authentic Norwegian food.
google avatar

Sharon B.

Yelp
The salmon is amazing!! The customer service is so good and the restaurant itself is beautiful. Absolutely recommend if you want good Norwegian cuisine!
google avatar

Dan H.

Yelp
Definitely get the "2 Salmon"! The salmon is cured to perfection with great texture and superb flavor. The bread and sauces were a perfect compliment. I also got the Cod - the fish was fresh and well cooked but the meal overall was unremarkable. Somehow I expected the sauce to be creamy/savory, instead it was light and a bit tangy - not the perfect compliment IMHO. The service was pleasant and attentive. The space was rustic and cozy...but not cramped.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful!!!! I truly loved this place!!! First time in Oslo...first night here. Wanted to try something authentic. The waitress was very accommodating and the food was amazing. The elk carpaccio was the major event. The oil and seasoning wasn't too strong and the elk was overly salty. The reindeer stew was unique and different. Loved it all!
google avatar

Tami V.

Yelp
Delicious dinner, fantastic service! Traveling and arrived at around 21:45 thinking that they were open until 23:00. But the kitchen closed at 22:00! Gratefully an order for dinner was placed including the clip fish and reindeer with lingonberries and veggies. ! I had not experienced that before and was so glad I tried it. Not that I needed it but had to order the pear cake too. It was warm and a nice light pear flavor with creamy ice cream. If I was in Oslo again would happily return!
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
Great place for dinner but recommend getting reservations since very busy. We walked in and almost didn't get a table. Fortunately another couple agreed to share their 4 top table with us. They were very charming couple from Switzerland and our meal was better with their company. I had the fish of the day and their specialty drink. Everything was flavorful and good. I would definitely go back. 4 star rating for food, great service and nice room. My only complaint is that the sauce + vegetables on the plate was not warm enough so it seemed like the fish and plate was not synchronized. Some may find this a nitpick but it did detract from the dining experience.

Lauren C.

Yelp
Their Bread is to die for! We actually asked for a second serving of bread and thought we won't be able to eat our meals but their entree we ordered were all really good so we definitely cleaned our plates!
google avatar

Jeanie N.

Yelp
Just a few blocks from the Royal Palace and National Gallery so I was a little skeptical about it being good since it's located in a tourist area, but omg best meal esp. for the price I had in Oslo! Starts with free bread and butter with chives. The bread is very fluffy and light with a razor thin yet crunchy bread. One of the best breads I've ever had. Creamy fish soup - A MUST GET. I've had really good creamy fish stew all over southern Norway, including at pricey $$$ restaurants, but my friends and I agreed that this place wins for best creamy fish stew! Packed with seafood - from mussels to salmon. The soup base is so flavorful without being so heavy and overwhelming. The bread with this stew is to die for The chocolate chip cookie was crisp and packed with chocolate The goat cheese salad was amazing because the baked cheese goes extremely well with the arugula and nuts Reindeer was good (I'm not a fan of how game-y reindeer is) but it came with delicious roasted/mashed veggies! Service was great! We were in a rush to the airport and the server (there was only 1 for the whole place!) was quick, understanding, and delightful Definitely coming back for the fish stew and the friendly service! Next time I'm in Oslo, this will be my first stop!

Yelp
Really pleasant ambiance. I ordered the traditional reindeer stew. It was quite good except i keep on thinking about ikea cafeteria food. The steak must be better than the stew. I like the brown ale though.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Reindeer stew in Norway? Yes please! And the Cloudberry Tjukkmelkpannacotta for dessert is highly recommended.
google avatar

Grace Y.

Yelp
I think everyone in the resturant found the place from trip advisor because they were all tourists speaking English. We had the reindeer stew and the fish. Both were pretty bland, and the fish was overcooked and a bit dry. Wish they used some salt or some pepper or some spice. A bit disappointing considering the raiting here. Given the portion, the dishes and drinks (~10 euro beer) was also on the high side, but then again we are in Norway so I guess I can't complain there.
google avatar

Morris M.

Yelp
I found this place on tripadvisor for reindeer meat. The reindeer meat with mashed potato did not disappoint me. The waitress was very nice and very helpful. The homemade biscuit was very good. Everything was all right. The missing star is because I asked for a norwegian beer (solo) and they served a large one for me. At that time I thought it was the only size they have but I found out that they have a smaller size (regular size). And the beer is 100NOK, more then 10 EURO. Other food on the menu were not so attractive to me.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly. However, the portions were tiny compared to prices. Not in a "super exclusive chef who does tiny dishes in many course meal" type of small. It was more the sort of cozy place that makes you think of lovely homemade food... but rationed

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Believe the reviews, this place is fabulous. Friend and I ordered the 3 course meals (venison and fish). Both were fabulous, though I was a little envious when I tasted the elk carpaccio. Would highly recommend everything we had: fish 3 course (clipfish carpaccio, salmon, pear cake) and venison 3 course (elk carpaccio, reindeer stew, berry pancotta). Great service and decor completes the experience.

Yelp
We stopped by Elias after a morning at the National Gallery where we saw the Scream. I wanted to scream in ecstasy the food was so good. My wife and I shared Clipfish dumplings for an appetizer and they were fantastic. Then we both had the salmon and egg followed by cheesecake for dessert. We liked Elias so much we stopped in later in the week for another go round. I ate the same meal as before while my wife had the fish stew. She is still talking about how good it was. Highly recommend. I would have given five stars, but on the second trip the cook forgot the balsamic for the salmon and egg and it affected the taste.
google avatar

Isadora A.

Yelp
Restaurants is in a nice location. Reservations recommended. Food was plentiful and delicious. The atmosphere is relaxing and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Ordered cured meats and mushroom soup for starters. Lamb shank and bacaleo (fish) entrées, both were excellent.

Dannie W.

Yelp
I like this place because they have unique food to try. They have oven baked organic salmon, reindeer stew, and elk enrecote. Personally I still like beef and lamb better than reindeer and elk. Reindeer is a bit more chewy and that's why it's cooked in stew. It's a bit salty to me but it tastes good with mashed potatoes. Elk has a bit special flavor. The decorations inside is good.
google avatar

KK H.

Yelp
Great meal featuring "Norwegian Natur" or fresh whole food ingredients with a twist on traditional Norwegian dishes. They brought us some really good herbed bread and butter to start. The mushroom soup was amazingly delicious, as was the the halibut and the reindeer stew (which seems to be one of their more popular dishes). All the ingredients were fresh, the flavors were fantastic, and we had a very nice dinner. The also carry some of the Norge beers. If you are looking for a delicious meal in downtown Oslo, this is the place to try.
google avatar

Nara B.

Yelp
From appetizers to main dish courses, this place offers a unique and authentic Norwegian experience. The menu items are rich and flavorful. The ambiance is quiet and intimate, and is filled with different cultures and languages. I'd come again if I were to visit Norway in the future or make a recommendation to a friend. Tusen takk!
google avatar

M. D.

Yelp
The restaurant is operating as usual; it is the overall building that is under renovation. Food was very nice, both the presentation and the taste (we had mussels and fish soup). Good selection of local beer, too! Friendly and efficient service.
google avatar

Chi-Wei W.

Yelp
The hamburger was as tough as a brick. It hurt when chewing... Ran out of spanich bread and couldn't offer appropriate substitute. Overall experience is bad...
google avatar

lisa g.

Yelp
Super delicious food and lovely staff! The decor seems more like an adorable coffee shop than a restaurant, but don't let that fool you - the food is exceptional. They also have a good selection of beer, wine, and spirits.
google avatar

Tony P.

Yelp
Excellent risotto and fish dishes, and reasonably priced for Oslo. Wines...not so good.
