Elizabeth Street Gallery

I'd walk by this place almost everyday and wonder about the sign 'La Rosa & Son Bread Co'. I see now that it's Elizabeth Street Gallery. I painted a portrait of the former place in my series of 'Disappearing New York', which you can see on my website, kovalfineart dot com. You can also buy or get reprints.

A plethora of exotic antiques line the walls in this huge manor. An ideal place to scavenge for furniture that could double as art piece or conversation starter. An outdoor showroom/private garden that lies in the middle of a bustling Nolita is my favorite place to get a few moments of peace and quiet. On some days, there are chances of hanging out with the gallery owner's docile dog who trots contently in his vast playground. As of a few months ago, the garden is now open to the public. +++++ for them.

An anachronism in the heart of Soho. Walk through the gates to be transported to another time, another place. Elizabeth Street Garden is like a mini mini version of Highgate Cemetery, which happens to be one of the most hauntingly beautiful places I've ever visited. Given its covert location, not many know of this sanctum of peace, and while half of me wishes to tell it to the world, the other half wishes to keep it secret among a few... Nay, let me whisper it to you: Find it in the middle of Elizabeth Street. Walk in and admire the collection of statues on your left and right. Stroll through the flower gardens, and take in all the colors -- magenta, canary yellow, fresh green. Watch children weave in and out of the flowering blooms. Entertain the idea that maybe, after all, there can be right in the world. Sundays will pass quickly here, whether you come for a stroll, a bite, or a quiet afternoon of reading. Leave through the gates, meeting oncoming traffic and hear again the hustle and bustle of the city. This is what New York is all about.

Its like a graveyard of sculptures. I love the way they display things. They had a few circular mirrors facing outwards the black framed windows and it was like an illusion within an illusion. I feel like I'm wandering in a private graveyard whilst in the middle of Soho. I wish I actually needed sculptures but for the mean time I can enjoy the short walk around the art.

(This review is exclusively about the outdoor garden) Stumbled upon this gem on our way to somewhere else. Felt like I was touring through the island of misfit antiques. The volunteers behind this effort worked extremely hard to preserve this garden from becoming an affordable housing development. They really want members of the community to volunteer and I read that you can talk to the staff about planting things on your own there. Overall very inviting. They are excited about having more community involvement! My friend vibed with one the the trees so we stayed a bit so he could climb it. Stop by if you're in the area!

I really like this place, but it makes me kind of resentful since I don't own a huge manor or a team of men to carry those enviable two foot tall Ionic capital columns to it. Elizabeth Street Gallery is kind of like an upscale salvage yard. They take architectural elements from demolished old buildings in New York (and elsewhere), and restore and sell them. If you've ever in the market for something very esoteric (think "conversation piece") and/or are just a fan of the old and the random, you'll enjoy this shop. They have a really nice outdoor showroom that is presented in a park-like way, so you can walk around and marvel at the treasures they hold (including, but not limited to, a huge set of 19th-century iron gates from Paris), and that can be really fun. I guess you have to have space for a lot of these things (not all of us have room for marble Louis XIV fireplaces), but it's nice just to browse and there is certainly a possibilty that you will find something to covet. Presented in a dignified and ever so slightly upscale way, this gallery is a favorite of mine among all in New York.

This place looks like a gothic graveyard. Had a chance to walk though it today. Some amazing sculptures. Some look right out of a cemetary, horror movie set, or from some old gilded-age mansions. This would look terrific decorated for Halloween with candle lit walk throughs at night. A very different kind of gallery to check out. Even some concrete benches to sit on and enjoy the view. Some cool stuff here.

At first, I honestly thought it was a graveyard placed randomly in Nolita....but at second glance, it seems to be a very unique outdoor gallery with interesting sculptures! Unsure about the pricing because I just passed by it and it very much caught my eye. Would love to stop by during hours and check it out.

Whenever I walk over to SoHo I try to pass through this gem (the Elizabeth Street Garden). Sometimes it's closed to the public but if you're ever wandering by and it's open do stop in as this place is so unique. I'm eager to try the yoga in a few months once this cold weather passes by. Check it out, take some pics, embrace the zen that this garden embodies.

This is on the precious street where I reside, so not many events have occured here that I haven't witnessed with my own two eyes. Usually exclusive, but fun to peek in. There was a hot salsa band playing one night, and my dancing on the street actually gained me a secret entrance inside, shhhh. A strange sculpture garden plopped in the middle of Nolita. You walk by and wonder how it all began....

As a flâneuse (not a buyer), my perspective is very different; I would never want any of these pieces in my home, nor would I ever choose to decorate a garden this way. As a public space, however, it is a pleasure to wander. Appearing unexpectedly among apartment buildings and cute stores, the gallery-garden is a surreal slice of a different world. The elegant wrought iron, scattered benches and antique sculptures transform an otherwise plain garden. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but it's a good way to spend a few leisurely minutes if you're in the area.

My review is more for the garden attached to the side. This place is a tiny gem of rustic-ness. We stumbled upon this place randomly on a sunny Saturday. Some of the piece were very damaged, and still had hefty price tags, strange. Some were just amazing to look at, there was a table built on stone slabs with skulls etched into them. My favorite was a statue of a man with no hands with fish hanging from his belt. Very picturesque in a Gothic way. The actually gallery contains lots of sun dials, and beautifully crafted mirrors that cost more than I make in three years. There was a note on the gate of the garden saying the location was closing soon so go check it out, now!

Elizabeth St Garden has come a long way! Since the community has come together to prevent it from becoming public housing (also important but there are alternative locations around), volunteers have kept the garden open and with programming. I think they now have a website and mailing list for people interested in learning more about the programming--it has been especially beautiful this spring. I am so excited for they'll bring this summer!

I was walking back from dinner at Little Italy and stumbled onto the garden just as it was getting dark. It was absolutely enchanting....like all the beautiful garden statues had gathered for a party! They are scattered about, each with a secret story to tell. I can't wait to go back in the daylight!

Obviously, this place is a gem in an otherwise concrete city. Still, I can't help but a bit peeved at the owner. For years, this place was always closed and very hard to get into. Then, about a year ago, I noticed that the gates *always* seemed to be open. I also noticed that the city was threatening to close the place down. And then it all made sense: Owner doesn't want to lose his garden but doesn't have a loyal fan base because yeah, we were never allowed in. Smart guy decides to open his gates, let guests fall in love with his space in order to gather support. I'm onto you, guy. And while I'm happy you got to keep your garden, I don't appreciate that you only opened your oasis to us peasants after the threat to lose your beloved space was real.

Transporting and really magical space both indoors and out but the garden supported by the community here is worthy of exploring. Truly nothing like it in NYC and I'm shocked if not seen it prior but am fortunate I discovered it and hope others do too.

Elizabeth Street lies dear in my heart...but it is absolutely impossible to get into this place. I've often walked by, amused by the sculptures, but they won't let me in. And for that, I demote you to three stars. I'm sure it is all very nice inside, but I wish they'd open it more to the general public.
